Hi everyone,

I have been asked a few times about how I resize line drawings to suit the size of the paper I want to paint on so I made a quick video about how I do it.

I don't have a projector but it's something I'd like to invest in.

I use Photoshop but a few patrons have told me that they use this website here to do the same sort of thing: https://www.rapidresizer.com

Please list any other image resizing websites that you know are effective and easy to use in the comments below.

Thanks,

Louise

Resizing Line Drawings in Photoshop

Comments

Michele Honquest

I clip the image on my laptop and paste it onto a word document and can drag the corner of the image to reduce or enlarge the image.

Joyce A Stevens

Michele, what do you mean when you say you "clip" the image? Thank you.

Yvonne Walton

I just resize it on the photocopy

Laurel

I import the image (picture) into excel and then drag the corners to the size I want. Biggest challenge is knowing what size 😅

Andree Heroux

I do the same than Michele… it is easier.

Rebecca Johnson

Rapid Resizer is great! It makes it so easy to upload your image or line drawing and print according to paper size. It is definitely worth the $40 a year!

Linda Lark

Microsoft Word or Publisher both came with my PC. Clicking on your image and resizing by dragging corners is cheaper and badger. Be sure to resize by corners only.

This is super helpful! What HP printer do u have? I desperately need a new printer and I’m totally lost, shopping for one…

Lynn Muster

I resize in Illustrator. I’m also able to remove objects and set the image in very light grayscale and then print directly onto my watercolor paper. I use Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 Wireless Color Wide-Format Printer. This will print card stock up to 19” wide. Makes a huge difference for me not having to trace, as I have arthritis in my thumbs. LOVE this printer!!

Karla Sanford

Thank you so much Louise! This was very helpful. I appreciate you so much!

Maria Thieme

Lynn, may I ask what brand and gsm watercolor paper you use with this printer? I have erosive arthritis in both hands. Thank you.

Jana Bailey

Thank you! This is very helpful. I will refer back to this video.

Lynn Muster

I mainly use Arches 140lb / 300g 9 x 12, 12 x 12 and 10 x 14. I also have New York Central in the same weight. I use this as well. Arthritis sucks, especially for tedious tracing work. This will be a game changer for you!

Linda

Thanks, Louise👍🏻.

ANNICK HARRINGTON

Hi Louise, it's very much appreciated the enlarged two piece drawings! I print them off as my printer only prints A4, then stick together, then stick to window and place my Arches watercolour paper over the top and trace off from that, it works well, though can make your arms ache if the drawing is very detailed!. Loving the tutorials, keep up the amazing work

I have a free version of excel that came with my computer (I never use it). Can you give me an idea how to load an image into excel to resize? thanks.

Wendy Scarlet

Is the ink waterproof? Do you have to do something special to avoid smearing?

Susan Kalzer

My Epson printer goes all the way up to Tabloid size (11'x17') so I usually resize on it. the other way I use is to drag my line drawing into Pages which is the word processor that came with my computer and resize to fit the paper size I like.

Laurel

Open a new excel page and you’ll see on the top too, bar the option to import photo. Click on the cell where you want to start (usually A1) and paste the picture to this spot. You can then drag the bottom right corner to enlarge the image to the size you’d like to print. When you print choose select entire workbook so it prints over multiple pages. Hope this is clear 😁

Lynn Muster

Yes, the ink is waterproof. No smearing at all. Just know that you can’t erase anything either. So go as light as you can. I just haven’t found that to be an issue.

Theresa

yes, I got it to import into Excel. However, as I look at the image, it looks fine, but sent to the printer, I get 4 sheets without a whole lot on them. Nothing that I can fit together to make one drawing. So I just printed out a 8.5x11 then scanned and enlarged to what I wanted. Also, in the upper right corner where the user can put in the print size one wants, as I changed one (width) the height automatically changed, which I didn't want. thanks for the excel suggestion.

Nancy Guenther

I use a simple free app called Image Size to resize. I save the file as a photo, then import it and resize. I make things larger or smaller on this app. Then I print directly from the app.

Every computer I've had included a basic photo program to open jpg and other photo files. When you open a photo (or the line drawing) in it, you can print it out. When printing, just remember to tell it what final size you want (such as 4x6) and it will shrink the photo accordingly so you have the size you want. Nothing else is needed to resize the line drawings.

You can use adobe reader to enlarge an image to any size. When printing, select the poster option and adjust the percentage of increase to whatever size fits your paper dimensions. This will tile the image printing the image on multiple sheets. Just trim off the borders and piece your image together with tape. Now you have an enlarged image to trace.

Vicki

Does anyone know of any available software to give a line drawing of a photo?

Faye Fenk

Louise Using a projector is a great way to get photo or whatever on to your paper. Just make sure do research to make sure you can do as close as possible otherwise all you will get is huge lines. I had to send a couple back until i got mine. I love it because I can take photos off of my phone. but I have a tendency to put too many lines and I get myself confused. how much of a drawing should you use? Or how do I determine which lines are important?

As I am a beginner…I am not interested in painting an A3 size just yet! I use the copy and paste method in Word and just resize to fit A4 or A5 paper ! Lucky I have a printer that will print A3 when I need it! I paint small as I am still having problems with the water ratio on paper, paint and my brush…
