Hi everyone,

A landscape painter I am not but I'm willing to learn, so the past few days I've been painting clouds. I painted the same group of clouds a few times trying different techniques until I found one I'm comfortable with. Something I wasn't expecting when I started painting them - skies are actually fun to paint and not that difficult.

I also painted a fairly simple seascape which I'll be sharing with you (unless I can do a better one). I struggled a little with the foreground on the seascape but it's not too bad. It's a learning experience anyway. I'll have another play around this afternoon and see if I can improve on the painting pictured here.

I painted all the clouds on the back of some of my failed paintings so don't ever throw your failures away. They are useful to try out different techniques.

Always learning!

I can’t wait to learn from you Louise. I have been trying some landscapes lately and having limited success. I too enjoy painting clouds, but am struggling with foliage and hillsides, especially with regards to color. Janis

Shelly Solle

Woooooo hooooooo. I need help with these.

Anita Repya

What I can see of them I love. Can't wait to watch your tutorial on this subject 😍

Hotflash Vickie

Yay!! I’ve had a thing for clouds lately and been hoping you would give them a try! Don’t expect you’ll give the dark, stormy shelf clouds I love a go, but no matter; I always need Louise help in All Things Watercolor, so I look forward to seeing all your pretty fluffy clouds!

Traci Baxendell

You're leading us in courage! Bravo! So excited to see you venture into new territory!

Diane Hansen

Delighted that you are willing to chance landscapes. I am a graphite landscape artist, so landscapes, flowers, and birds are my first love. I live by the ocean, so seascapes are in my wheelhouse.

Monalisa Mackey

I would love to see a landscape painting by you! I love landscapes. Maybe you’ll include a couple of people on the seashore as well? 😊

Sharon E Toombs

Kool Beans! I'm also looking forward to it!

Joyce A Stevens

What you are showing on your table looks lovely. Would love to try the seascape.

SUSSI Rodriguez

What I see on your desk, looks like you have been doing landscape’s for yrs.

Simi

This is so awesome. Another new thing to learn from you. I hope to learn to paint light also from you, as in a lamp at dusk time.

Lindy Hawthorne

Looks beautiful. Wonder if the clouds involve using a tissue ????? I will wait to see.... LOL

Sheridan

I practice painting clouds to warm up, when I have painter's block, or when I just want to paint something but don't have much time. I look forward to leaning from and with you!

Kathy Wilden

Looking forward to paint a landscape…thanks Louise for inspiring us to try new things

So happy to hear this, Louise, as I’ve attempted a skyscraper and have not been pleased at all, so I’m really looking forward to having your kind, skilled guidance with this interest.

Theresa

Oh my, your work, of what I see, is a tease!! Can’t wait!

Karen Lorenz

All your work is so excellent I have no doubt even your new efforts at landscapes will be stunning! Landscapes are my favorite thing so I'm really looking forward to this! Thank you!

Penny Albright

I’m really looking forward to this. I need it badly!

These cloud painting attempts are lovely. Looking forward to trying them out.

Tim Helton

Would love to see you do a northern lights painting.

Paul Clark based in England has some great cloud & landscape tutorials on YouTube, among other subjects. His simple brush strokes produce seemingly "easy" masterpieces. (But are actually quite tricky to master, at least for me.) He is a must watch. Rick Surowicz, based in the states, also makes very good and comprehensive beginner watercolor tutorials, including landscapes. I highly recommend giving their channel a watch. (But am also looking forward to learning from Louise!) Hope you guys find them as enjoyable as I do!

Danielle Gagnon

Excellente idée! J'ai très hâte de voir ce tutoriel, Louise!

Cathy Bowden

Looks pretty good so far, I really do struggle with landscapes.

Yvonne Walton

Hi Louise I know you a busy lady but I was wondering if you are still going to release the rose you did on inkTober? I’m so looking forward to it coming out.

Louise De Masi

Hi Yvonne, yes- it's on the schedule for this month.

Joaquin Romero

Very much looking forward to seeing this video.!

Sharon Silvester

Louise, I notice that you hold your brush very close to the ferrule. Is there a particular reason, or is it just your personal preference as opposed to holding the brush further up the handle? I love, love, love your tutorials .

Louise De Masi

Thanks Sharon. I hold it close when I'm painting in detail and want more control but when I am painting loosely I hold it further back towards the end of the handle.

TeresaLaLana

Louise, thank you so much for your efforts. it is not easy to go out of "our comfort zone" & I appreciate you going out for us. I love your tutorials, you make it that it seems achievable & I really enjoy the process! Your landscape looks beautiful & I am looking forward to try it

Speaking of "failed" paintings. I reach a point in almost every painting, where I feel like it is only fit for the waste can. It's like a glitch in the process, I question my skills, and wonder why I ever thought I could paint anything. Then I get up, and go fetch a cup of tea and a bite to eat, maybe a quick walk outside. When I go back, I tell myself it's just a practice piece to work out the difficult bits, then I'll toss it. No one else will ever see it, so it doesn't matter if it's terrible. Once I get back into it, I forget all about the self doubt, and 9 times out of 10, I end up with a painting I can live with. Do you ever have that "glitch" moment when you're painting?

Lise Bowles

I sure do and as a matter of fact at this very moment I have walked away from my painting with all those same feelings. I grabbed a cup of coffee and supposed to be doing paperwork, lol, but instead I came to Louises website to obsess a bit more about what I am doing wrong. You just described my feelings completely so I guess Im not alone.

Lise Bowles

Oddly enough though, I think I go through this with every painting I do, and Ive been painting watercolor since 2018. So I now just try to plow through it, even if I think it's destined for the scrap bin, because sometimes I actually end up liking them.

Louise De Masi

I can't tell you how many paintings I have abandoned. Others I have fought to the end and then I can see how much I overworked them. Sometimes it gets me down but I try to learn from them and when I'm ready, I start again and have another go. Nearly all paintings go through a really ugly stage but I have discovered if I am not struggling with the paint and I keep going, it will most likely work out ok. As I mentioned above, I keep the failed paintings because I use the back of them to do studies and try out different things.

I look forward to more landscape paintings of yours, which I am very interested in improving on as well as cloud techniques. Thank you!
