Hi everyone,

This video is all about different ways of creating visual texture on your watercolour paintings. I recently posted it on my YouTube channel and a few people have asked me to post it here on Patreon as well (without the ads). I'll put it on the indexes as well so you can find it if ever you need it.

In this video I demonstrate various techniques you can use to create texture and then I put some of the techniques to use on the castle door painting.

This is not a full length tutorial because I didn't film it all. I have skipped over a lot of the painting but I'm sure many of you will be able to try painting it yourself nonetheless. I have included a line drawing, supplies list and a copy of my finished painting that you can download. There are no progress photos.

The reference photo came from Pixabay here: https://pixabay.com/photos/arch-architecture-building-castle-2764/

Have fun!

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Natalia Kalliton (Kjustenough)

Hi Louise, this is a beautiful painting and I'd love to have a go at it. However can't find a doc with the supplies list you usually provide with your tutorials. Perhaps it isn't necessary this time as the video might suffice. 🎨💕

Louise De Masi

Thanks for letting me know Natalia. It's there now.

Kate

Dear Louise, I have been having a rough time in general and didn't paint at all. After seeing this wonderful tutorial, I readied my brushes, paper and paint and gave it a go, as it seemed calming, easy enough and not very complicated. What can I say - due to your guidance and teachings I was able to complete the first painting in months! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do, teach and inspire. You truly are a gift for many.

Jean Gursoy

Louise, this is so beautiful, so picturesque. Thanks for sharing❤️❤️❤️

Nancy Guenther

Thank you so much for posting this to your Patreon, Louise. After watching it on You Tube, I wanted to try it. I love painting doors and stone work. After things calm down at my house, will get back to painting soon.

Hotflash Vickie

Aww, thanks! I hope this doesn't turn into more trouble than it was worth. I do appreciate it! It does look like a fun one and reminds me of some nightmares I had as a girl of my grandmother's old place, LOL.

Hotflash Vickie

(p.s., I meant more trouble for YOU to do all this work for US, not trouble for us, your students. Never trouble for us, of course; we enjoy all of it. Our spouses suffer significantly during the entire process of everything we do in the world of watercolor, no doubt, and in fact should set up a network support group, but actually I don't have time for that and it's their problem, isn't it? HaHaHaHa)

Louise De Masi

That makes me very happy to know Kate. I hope things improve for you. Huge hugs. 💖🌸

Louise De Masi

Thanks Vickie- no problem at all. Lol- funny you should mention that....Dom has told me he wants to start a watercolour painter partner's support group....ha ha ha.....and he's serious. 😂

Hotflash Vickie

He did seem a little stressed when he was "suggesting" pronunciation tips in the castle door video. Perhaps he hasn't fully recovered from that fall? Can't imagine why anyone would think our behavior is the least bit odd, can you? Hmmm. Perhaps an insect or reptile bite (you do have some wild critters in Oz); I recommend keeping a close eye out on the fella for a bit. just as a precaution :)

Tonna McGuinn

I love love LOVE this! More distressed architecture please!

Anita Repya

Just in time I've been looking at something with hardscapes

Elizabeth R Gambaccini

Louise, How do you choose which kind of DaVinci round brush to use? (Maestro vs Casaneo vs Colineo). Which are you using in castle door painting? Thank you!

Elizabeth R Gambaccini

I so appreciate your technique instruction! And I really am thankful to be able to see your palette when you are loading your brush into the paint. ( I’m not describing this very well! Your demo of your brush into the paint puddles helps me understand the water/paint ratio.)

Louise De Masi

Hi Elizabeth, I'd like to move away from sable brushes if I can so I'm trying out different brushes until I find some that I like. There's a supplies list you can download for the castle door. The brushes I used are listed on there.

Basia

Lovely Louise, I am so looking forward to trying this study out, not done much architecture painting myself...Many thanks!

Cheri Lee Altemoos

I wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed this tutorial I wasn't going to watch it I had no desire to draw a door but I absolutely love all the techniques but my question is can I use any type of Indian ink to get that spidery vein look I absolutely love that

Louise De Masi

Thank you! I think so Cheri as long as it archival ink I think it should do the same thing.

A little over a year ago, I receive a set of paints for the winter holidays: Schminke Super Granulating "Galaxy". I don't often like using granulating paints, but this gives me a perfect opportunity to try them and let everyone know my opinion, in case they are considering purchasing. Starting this painting today. :)

Caroline

There is something fascinating about doors. I have tons of pics saved, that at some point I want to turn into a series of some kind.

David Molloy

Thanks very much Louise, I loved watching you incorporate different techniques to create the whole. Take care, David. XX
