Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Rose with Pink Edges tutorial.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/81008817

In this tutorial I begin with a short demonstration about how I use Photoshop to help choose colours. If you want to skip over this part and get straight to the painting demonstration - it starts at around 9:46.

For this painting I narrowed my colour choices down to just four. I used Fabriano Artistico soft press paper but you don't need to use that particular paper. It could be painted on either hot press or cold press, whatever your favourite is.

All the files for the painting are attached below my message here. There are ten progress photos! Hopefully they will be useful as you paint. Click on the files to download them.

I hope you enjoy painting/watching it.

Louise

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

Hi ,I am new here.I have a question about downloading the project to paint. If you could give me a clueI would appreciate it.

Debra wallace

My printer has the birds or flowers so big usually to fit the paper, how can i make the bird smaller, thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Debra. Are you asking about this rose or another drawing of a bird? I’m not sure what printer you have but there should be print settings that allow you to reduce the size on the print to fit your paper. You should select your paper size, e.g. A4 and the Scale i.e. 100% and reduce the scale until it fits on the page in the preview window. Some printers have a "fit to page" setting as well. If all else fails there are free websites like "rapid resizer" where you can upload the file to make it any size you want.

Hi Debra, underneath my message to everyone (above) you'll see all the files related to the painting in red font. You click on those and they should download to your device.

Nikki Bailey

Hi Louise. I realize the ref photo for this tutorial is your own, but are we able to download it to get a better understanding of tonal values etc?

Ashley B

Yay!!! I’m so excited to get this started! I have the paper all stretched and ready!

Louise De Masi

Hi Nikki, yes of course. I'm sorry I forgot to upload it yesterday. It's there now. Thank you for letting me know.

The beginning of the video was an excellent, detailed explanation on how you choose and mix your colors for the particular project on hand. It’s so helpful and reinforces what I have been learning on my own. Thank you! 👏🏻😊

Caroline

This was a tricky one . Mine ended up being too yellow, and since I sketched it by hand I got confused about where to shade! I think I need some better paper as mine didn't really create a lovely diffused background....

Louise, you’ve introduced me to a whole new world with mixing watercolours, it’s given me so much more scope for variety and life in the work. You’re an incredible teacher and artist! 🤗

Louise De Masi

Thanks Terri. I'm so pleased it was helpful to you.
