Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for all of your feedback about what you need help with. Dom is going to collate all of your questions and suggestions for me so I can use them to inform the tutorials I make moving forward.

In this tutorial we'll paint a Tiger head and we'll be using different paint consistencies. With the orange and white areas of fur I use paint that has been thinned with water but for the black areas I mix some creamy, sticky pigment that sits in place on the wet paper.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here for you to download. The reference photo I used for this painting is my own.

Watch it all the way through first before you attempt to paint it. If it doesn't work out the first time, reflect on your errors and then flip your paper over, tape it down and try a second time.

I hope you enjoy painting it.

My tutorials are designed to help you on your creative journey. Any painting you create from a tutorial where I use my own reference photo is for personal use only. They can't be sold or entered into an art competition. I write on the Supplies Lists where the photos come from.

Permission is not given to paint any of my earlier paintings that are not tutorials because some of them are licensed. Also, a few of my earlier paintings were painted from photographs where I sought the permission of the photographer. The photographer gave me permission to use it, not others.

If I do a tutorial where I use another photographer's photo (eg from Pixabay or Unsplash) that is available for anyone throughout the world to download (copyright free) and use I’m happy for you to sell the paintings you create from the tutorial. I know art supplies are expensive, so it's good to be able to recoup the costs of supplies.

If I do a tutorial and I use a photo that I have paid for and downloaded from the website Wildlife Reference Photos in order for you to sell the painting you create from the tutorial you need to purchase and download the photograph yourself. This is in accordance with the Terms and Services of the Wildlife Reference Photowebsite.

If you share a finished painting on social media I would really appreciate it if you could link back to my account (be it on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram) and mention that you painted it in one of my tutorials. @louisedemasi

Thank you!

I am just a new new beginner with watercolour. I have done a couple of tutorials but nothing more than that at this point - I can't wait to seriously begin my journey with you Louise because you paint more along the lines of what I really want to do. I am look forward to learning from you.

Louise De Masi

It’s a beautiful tiger. I love it, excellent painting!

Negative painting, laying in a background, should your background go in before you start painting or after - also how do you decide which is best. How to preserve light , or restore it when you’ve lost it…. how do you decide which is the right brush for the job? These are a few things I struggle with …. Also I suck at painting leaves and mixing greens. Thanks Louise for all your hard work, it shows in the quality of your videos. Robyn

I have been waiting for this one since you mentioned it months ago. A family member has been -begging- for me to paint one of the big cats, and my attempt on my own just turned out so badly. Thank you so much!!

Thanks very much Louise for a great tutorial. XX

This is a stunner! Thanks Louise. I did have a problem - I used the black mix & it turned green on the tiger! Had to switch to lunar black & burnt umber instead 😳. Too much yellow in the fur?

Casey Clay

I know this question was a while back, but I thought a reply may still help future readers?

Casey Clay

What brand of paint are you using? If it is a student-grade pan paint without pigment numbers available, I'm willing to bet that their "burnt sienna" had yellow/orange in it. W&N's burnt sienna is a PR101 as opposed to a traditional PBr7, but it still gives a good gray/black mix. One time I had a similar experience... I was running quite low on burnt sienna so I decided to substitute it for DS Quin Burnt Orange, which I had plenty of. W&N b. Sienna and DS Q. Burnt Orange look very very similar on paper side by side. However, when I mixed the Qburnt orange with my French Ult., I got green. So, long story long, double-check your pigment numbers if you can. Just because it Looks like burnt sienna, doesn't mean it will mix like burnt sienna lol.

Casey Clay

Me again... (I keep hitting enter by mistake.) I was just going to add that usually, a burnt umber will work very well mixed with F. ult as well. If in doubt, try that... Perhaps:)

Louise, I just wanted to tell you how amazed I am at how easy it is to turn out something marvelous by following your tutorials. One day, I hope I can pick up enough to do it myself, but for now, it's enough to look at my tiger and be wonderfully encouraged.

Yvonne Walton

Louise could you use white ink for the whiskers instead of the white paint you have used? Which is better?

Louise De Masi

Yes for sure. I don't think it makes much difference to the painting. It depends on what you are more comfortable using. Goauche can be a bit more difficult to use because you need to thin it with water so that the paint flows off the brush but if you thin it too much the pigment becomes too light and you can't see it when it dries. Ink on the other hand can be used straight out of the bottle.

I'm finally getting a chance to do this Tiger and I'm so excited! I enjoyed painting the Chetah and hangs proudly in my room. This Tiger will fit perfectly next to him. hank you so much Louise! LOVE LOVE

Louise De Masi

Thank you Corrine. I hope you enjoy painting the tiger too.

Watercolor

I just tried the Tiger tutorial and am very pleased. Thank you for your excellent guidance. Question: why did you use your #1 brush for the whiskers instead of a rigger brush? I had trouble with the #1 or #0, but the #1 rigger worked beautifully

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Diane. That's great, I'm glad you are pleased. There's no particular reason why I used the #1 brush. Always use whatever brush you are comfortable using.

Hazel Dalton

I’m about to give this tiger a go….I just wanted to thank you for keeping the colors to a minimum….u make everything so pleasurable.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Hazel. I hope you have success with it. ❤️

Diana Moreland

I plan on doing the tiger. He looks beautiful. I was wondering if you had ever thought of doing the zodiac animals.

amanda boers

Hi Louise, not sure if you are still checking this post but I am about to start the tiger and don’t have transparent yellow. I have W&N lemon or Quinacrodone gold, which would you suggest I use as substitute please?

Chickenmaster

This is an amazing painting. I tried it myself, but then had to go back to soften up my edges. What I enjoyed most was watching the black contrast with the orange, making the tiger more vibrant when I painted it on. Thank you for the inspiration. Your paintings are wonderful.
