Hi everyone,

This is Part 1 of the Guinea Fowl tutorial.

Part 2 of this tutorial is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/85547796

I know, I know, it's ugly- but to me, it's so ugly - it's beautiful.

I was drawn to the colour, the texture, the spiky neck feathers and that gorgeous eye.

In this tutorial we will use the following techniques:

wet on wet

wet on dry

dry brushing

charging

and we'll use confident brush strokes to paint those spiky neck feathers.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. Click on them to download them.

There are lots of progress photos included to help you.

I hope you enjoy it.

Louise

Yayyy! Thank you, Louise 😊. I have been waiting for this one 💕

Sherry Be

Cannot wait to paint. Thank you Louise.

Lindsey Jewell

Louise, I don't know what you did differently when you uploaded this video, but please continue to do it that way! I started the video on here (patreon) and was able to resume this tutorial on my TV. It was in my history on YouTube. I am able to see the details so much better on my TV compared to my tablet. Whatever you did, it's working!!

Louise De Masi

Hi Lindsey. I didn't do anything different to what I normally do. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lindsey Jewell

Oh how weird!! All of your other videos on here, I'm only able to watch through here. This is the only one video that will go into my history videos on YouTube and I can resume it that way through my tv. Very wild!

Dianne O'Neill

Thank you!! I love these quirky little guys! (Used to breed them)

Joy Wright

I got the option as well to either enlarge the screen or mirror it to my TV - maybe a Youtube improvement?

Rebecca

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder… and this little guy is outstandingly gorgeous!! Seriously- I’m so excited to paint this one. Thank you for making a video. I love all of the details and colors! 😍

Ariane

Stunning, really love the look of this bird, from when you first shared an image of it

Cindy Kasprzak

Hi, Louise is there a comparable brush to use instead of the Borciani Bonazzi?

Louise De Masi

Lucky you Dianne! I was at Taronga Zoo in Sydney and there was a family of them (little chicks) wandering around. They were free to walk among all the visitors. This was one of the parents. ❤️

I did a quick Google search: 'long thick rigger brush for watercolour' painting. I found this one: https://shorturl.at/bgDRU. I was also thinking a sword or dagger brush would be useful for painting those spiky black feathers. You could push down on it for thicker parts and come up on the tip of the brush for the points of the feathers. Otherwise, use a large pointed round brush if you have one.

Lydia Frazier Bosley

I may put this one on the "back burner", but as always, it will be a worthwhile subject to tackle - Thanks, Louise! 💜💛💚

Bonnie Williams

I can’t wait to try this one —I’ve loved this painting since I first saw it and so excited you did a tutorial. Thank you Louise for all your hard work ❤️

Maria Eadie

love it! love the colors Louise.

Mari Pieterse

Thanks, Louise. I enjoyed painting this cuty. Is it possible to make it bigger - want to paint one for my daughter on an A3. Other wise, I will go to the printers and ask them to resize it for me...

Louise De Masi

Hi Mari, Sorry- I'm just getting around to this now. I have attached an enlarged version of the line drawing. Thanks!

Mari Pieterse

Thank you so much, Louise. You are the best!!!

Robert Edwards

Thank you, Louise. I think that one of the things I am learning from your Tutorials is that every part of the painting is important. Details in the eye. Shadows on the wattle. wonderful!

jk.art.studio

I love your color choices for this piece! The Cobalt Turquoise Blue is one of my favorites as well as the Burnt Sienna! I don’t think this Guinea Fowl is really ugly. He’s kind of cute in his own way 💕 😂

Louise De Masi

Thank you Jeannie. He has a face only a mother would love. 😅

Maëva Martel

Hi Louise! Thank you for this tutorial. Your style can turn anything into a beautiful model! I was wondering about what you say at the beginning of every video: when you say you « transfer » your line drawing, what do you mean exactly? Do you simply reproduce your line work from photoshop to your paper freehandedly or do you have another technique I haven’t found in your other videos yet? Thank you so much for your time and work

Louise De Masi

Hi Maeva, Thanks so much! I have written a post about transferring a line drawing to watercolour paper here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/37395099 Copy and paste that link into your browser. It's also listed on the word index. It should answer your question. I usually use saral transfer paper or graphite scribble.

Maëva Martel

Perfect! I had a feeling you would already have answered that question since you seem so well organized, sorry I couldn’t find it by myself. Have a beautiful day
