Hi everyone,

The glazing technique is a valuable skill for beginner watercolour artists to learn so in this video we have a closer look at it.

We'll look at:

What it is

How to do it

What to use it for

If you want more information, here is a blog post I have written about the glazing technique: https://www.louisedemasi.com/tips/2023/6/28/how-to-do-the-watercolour-glazing-technique

Don't forget to have a look at the other technique tutorials that I have here on Patreon.

Very nice. Thank you for your detailed breakdown.

This is very helpful! I esp like the examples you showed us of how to use it.

Nancy Guenther

Very helpful, Louise. I especially loved the examples at the end with the various paintings.

Linda

Thank you, Louise. 🥰

Sheryl Hill

Very helpful! Thank you.

Hi louise, have you heard of colour previewers by Maria Kellard, i think she is an australian artist. They look like coloured plastic pieces that you lay over your work to see what is the best colour to glaze over your work. The problem for me is that you can only get them from australia and the cost is a lot for postage to England.

Louise De Masi

Hi June, No I've not heard of them before. I'll look them up- sounds interesting.

Andrea Paulis

The first tutorial of yours that I attempted was of a couple of dragonflies. I was introduced to glazing with that tutorial have used what I learned from that over and over again ever since. A continuing learning experience!

Mary

Hi Louise! Your koi painting was wonderful and I think you used glazing quite a bit there? Was wondering if you are planning on doing maybe a smaller version of that painting for Patreon? Thanks so much again for sharing your knowledge with us!

judy griffin

Thank you for this information. ❤️

Monalisa Mackey

Thank you so much, Louise. This video is so helpful!😊. One thing I really like is that you introduce us to other artists who excel in certain techniques. I am planning to buy some of the books you recommended such as the ones by Tony Couch and David Bellamy. I particularly love David Bellamy’s art. Please continue to share book recommendations with us when doing future Tips and techniques videos. I will have a scroll through John Lovitt’s Instagram page to see more of his work🙂. I do have two books that are very good art reference books: (i) Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor by William B. Lawrence , and (ii) Art of the Limited Palette by Hazel Soan. Dylan Scott Pierce is also an excellent artist who is a master at capturing light in his paintings. I think he is on Instagram.

Cynthia Keith

I appreciated your tutorial Louise… simple following your instructions but so effective. Thank you…

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Monalisa and thank you. I certainly will. I have a few of Hazel's books. I love how she explains things simply so everyone can understand. John Lovett is an amazing artist. I've admired his work for years. His father was also a great painter.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Mary. I have quite a few photos I can look through so yes perhaps I could paint a simpler and smaller one. Thanks for the suggestion.

Monalisa Mackey

Yes, She really does explain things simply and if you have ever seen her in an interview/demo you can clearly see that she is so passionate about watercolour and capturing the essence of her subject in the moment when painting and keeping the painting fresh 😀

Merrillyn

I love the palette you are using. Where can it be purchased?

Janet Knappier

Thank you for this! It was so helpful. What is your preference for maximum number of layers on a painting? Or does the paper start to erode at a certain point or lose its effectiveness?

Louise De Masi

Hi Janet, My pleasure. I'm glad it was helpful. If you use good quality paper you shouldn't have a problem with it eroding. With watercolour it's best not to layer too much because it loses its freshness. My method of painting in the past, required a lot of layering and as a result some of my paintings tended to look overworked. I'm mindful these days of trying to reduce the amount of layering I do.

Judy williams

Hello, is charging the same as glazing but when used wet?

Basia

GoodG explanation.......Always interesting to hear which artists inspire you and why...will look upJohns work and his glazing technique.....Hazel Soan......wonderful enthusiast And great artist!

Louise De Masi

Thank you Basia. Hazel and John are so talented and that have a wealth of knowledge that they share. ❤️

Gerda snyers

how do I know if a color is transparent?

Lisbeth

You put so much additional information into the topics. Thank you! I learn so much here 😊

Louise De Masi

Yes, glazing can work on Aquabord, but it behaves a bit differently than traditional watercolour paper. Because Aquabord is less absorbent, each glaze can lift or move the layer underneath if you’re not careful. The key is to let each layer dry completely and use a light touch. I have a recent reel on my Instagram page where I paint some fruit on a spoon. You can briefly see me using the glazing technique on the inside part of a raspberry.

Tillie Fowler

Thank you! I’m painting the Olive branch now and practicing the glazing technique.

Swagata Banerjee

Hi, Louise, I have a much better understanding of glazing after watching this video and also painting the apple tutorial. If I want to continue experimenting with the glazing technique, which videos would you recommend as a next ones?

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful Swagata. I use the glazing technique throughout many of the tutorials. None of the tutorials focus specifically on glazing. Sometimes it might just be a yellow wash over a leaf to brighten it. One tutorial that springs to mind where I use this technique is the geranium tutorial. I do a bit of glazing on the petals - https://www.patreon.com/posts/84071795
