Hi everyone,

Here is the Cows in Paddock tutorial.

In this tutorial we'll use a large brush to paint the shrubs behind the cows as well as the grass that lies in front of them, creating a loose and expressive effect.

The detailed work is on the cows themselves.

All the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. Click on them to download them.

I hope you enjoy painting this.

Lovely painting - in progress! I haven't painted since end of March when I heard about my grandchild to be - have been knitting and sewing instead - however I am now aching to paint again, so I shall pick up a brush over the weekend! It's good to hear your calm and informative voice again - and watch how you paint, nobody better ;-)

Baby due 14 September Louise - but we all know they have their own agenda! Gender unknown - but my money is on a girl!

Louise De Masi

Not long now! I'm excited for you. Please send me a message when he/she arrives. 🥰

Myrrhine Grossi

Merci beaucoup Louise. I'm really happy to learn with you, mixing, merging, blending, softening greens in the foreground an the background. The cows are so beautiful! thank you very much

This was helpful in several ways. First of all, the fact that it took you SIX tries and you worked through it... rethinking the painting and realizing it was a vignette you needed to do. I was in a similar situation with a commission and last night I decided to tell the client I didn't feel I could make a good painting, but then I watched your video and immediately realized a vignette would be a good solution for me too. And secondly, I have a dog portrait I've wanted to do where the dog is laying in tall grass and his body is mostly obscured. Your demonstration with the cows gave me the tools I need to give it a go. Thank you so much!!

Louise De Masi

I'm so glad it's helpful to you Christine. Good luck with the dog portrait.

Ong Meng Kwan

What can I substitute naple yellow with?

Louise De Masi

Hi Ong, I don't know what yellows you have. Do you have any cool yellows?

Ong Meng Kwan

Do I tell whether a colour is cool by its pigments? I have yellows as below:

Ong Meng Kwan

Winsor yellow, Winsor lemon, Winsor transparent yellow, Winsor raw sienna, Winsor yellow orche, Winsor Indian yellow

Nancy Guenther

Whew! This was difficult! I should have another try. But instead I need a little lie down. Thank you, Louise! I fiddled too much with the grass. But if I squint, it looks okay. Ha! I learned a lot. Ready for the cow in the pond when it comes out.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Nancy. Lol....this was my fifth attempt so you are doing well! 😅

Louise De Masi

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner Ong. I've just read your message now when I answered Nancy below. I don't know why I didn't get an email when you sent it....so sorry! Try either Winsor Yellow or Winsor Lemon. An easy way to work out the tenperature of a colour is to go online and look at the paint charts that the manufacturers put out. I have a video explaining how to do it: https://www.patreon.com/posts/84697265

Meri

Just a quick question and sorry if it's bothersome, but can we expect the tutorial of the cow that's in your banner any time soon? I really want to learn the ripple and reflection effect.

Louise De Masi

Hi Meri, Not long to wait now. I've got the lioness just about ready and the cow in the water I plan to post next month.

Meri

Thank you!

Bonnie Chronister

I absolutely loved painting this peaceful pasture.

Kay Wolfs

Hi Louise...Winsor and Newton say that Winsor Yellow is a warm yellow not a cool yellow? Im still learning about warm and cool colours as I have not had any formal training in painting.

Louise De Masi

Hi Kay, Hmmm.....🤔 I'm not sure but I think it is cool. It's listed on the colour swatch chart with the cool yellows 🤷🏼‍♀️. Winsor Yellow Deep is warm.
