Hi everyone,

This is Part 1 of the 'Fishies' tutorial.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/94024847

In this tutorial you will paint a simple background splash of colour behind the fish on wet paper and your wet on wet skills will get a work out. You will paint beautiful washes of colour on the bodies of the fish and you will make the fins look transparent. Lots of fun stuff!

I tried to simplify the fish as much as I could so I hope this tutorial will help you learn to not paint everything you see.

I used Schmincke paints for this painting. Winsor & Newton substitution colours are included on the Supplies List. There are 10 progress photos of my painting included to help you when you paint yours. The files are attached below my message here.

I hope you enjoy it.

Maksym Kulikovskyi

For some reason part 1 is in 480 resolution for me on Youtube

Louise De Masi

Hi Maksym, let me look into it. I'll see if I can fix it. Thanks for letting me know.

Louise De Masi

Thank you! I'm re-exporting it and I'll upload a new version and swap it. I'll let you know when I've fixed it.

Maksym Kulikovskyi

Fantastic, been waiting for these fishies since you said you'd be making a tutorial

Louise De Masi

Hi Maksym- it should be fixed now. Refresh your page if you still have this opened. Thank you again for letting me know. Something happened when I exported it the first time. All good now.

Elaine

Absolutely lovely, thank you Louise 😍👏🏻

Janet

This looks like fun! I think your adorable grandson might like these fishies in his room.

Kate

I was looking forward to these so much! I painted the beta fish already and I loved it so much. Thank you Louise!

Louise De Masi

You're very welcome Kate. Thank you. I hope you enjoy painting the fish in this tutorial too.

Jess Knowles

Beautiful...by the way those eyebrows are technically nostrils. Goldfish have an acute sense of smell. The painting of the dark fish and still keeping those fins like veils was particularly useful. Thanks

Louise De Masi

Thank you and thanks also for that information Jess! ❤️

Magnifique çest très beau bravo ♥️♥️♥️

Naginder Manhas

Just finished the first fish and this was so much fun seeing it come together with so much character. Thank you

Just getting my paints ready. I love the backgrounds that drip. Helps this perfectionist here! My favorite from Louise, “accept what it gives you”

Louise De Masi

Thank you Lynn! Lol- It's taken me a long time to accept what it gives me.

Lynn Sloan

Louise, I'm interested in purchasing Da Vinci Maestro round brush series 35, Sizes, #0, #5 that you use. This is what I'm finding here in the US: Da Vinci Series 35 Maestro Kolinsky Brush - Long Tapered Round - 5. It is a red sable. Is yours also?

Mleong

Hi Louise. I really enjoyed this tutorial. The black fish was to die for! I rate myself on 1 to 10 scale on each painting I do. Normally my self satisfaction level for my results fall at 2-3 level ( I'm a tough self critic). But my satisfaction level with the outcome was a "5" on this one after two attempts. That's a big improvement for me. Thanks for sharing and for your patience in explaining your technique and instructing us.

Louise De Masi

Hi Mleong, Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the tutorial and that you're seeing improvement in your work. A "5" is fantastic progress! Keep up the great work and don't hesitate to reach out if you need help.
