Hi everyone,

Here is Part 1 of the Lily Tutorial.

Part 2 is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/97857647

Paint some beautiful Arum Lilies. I also share with you my colour selection process.

This tutorial is suitable for experienced painters. It’s divided into two parts. I’ve used a limited palette of just four colours.

You'll be working both wet on wet and wet on dry and I also share with you my colour selection process for this painting.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I hope you enjoy painting it.

Louise

PS: I am putting the finishing touches on a simple tutorial for beginners. I'll post it this month.

I can't wait to do this one! This is exactly what I have been hoping for since Dom mentioned you were painting a bunch of lilies lately. :)

Laura Etchemaite-Walborn

Thank you Louise! I have been waiting for this one since you did it on water board.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Laura. It's a different composition to the Aquabord painting. I didn't want to paint the same thing twice. I hope you enjoy it.

Samia Pasha

Thank you Louise! I’ve been desperately counting days for you to post this tutorial!😄

Annette Senko

I have really enjoyed your Patreon tutorials and have learned so much since joining. You are an excellent teacher and amazing artist! I was so excited to received this tutorial in particular but unfortunately, I am unable to access the documents in the new zip file format on my iPad Pro. I have never had any issues opening the individual files posted previously. Can you please let me know if it is possible to post the individual files again or is this no longer feasible. Many thanks!

Louise De Masi

Hi Annette, Thank you very much! I'm so pleased. I've attached all of the files now. 🥰

Annette Senko

Oh wow, thank you so much Louise, it was so kind of you to take the time! I am so excited to try this one for my daughter’s partner as they both love Lillies. Thanks again for going above and beyond!!!

Louise De Masi

No problem at all Annette. I'll make sure I keep posting all of the files as well as the zip file in future. I hope you enjoy the painting.

Annette Senko

Thank you, I really appreciate that! By the way, I am currently working on the guinea fowl painting and it’s turning out great so far, thanks to your detailed, step by step instructions. Not sure if I’ll make it all the way through without messing up somewhere but I am bound and bent to finish a decent one eventually. 🙂

Beverly Amato

Thanks, Louise for this flower tutorial. I’ve been looking forward to joining you in another beautiful Patreon project. I have the line drawing done and will begin painting soon.

Vee

Thank you so much for these beauties! This will be my first painting for 2024 - can't wait! 💜

A little off topic. I’m getting ready to try this one, and I’ve been admiring your mixing palette. It’s on sale at Jackson’s now, but I’m having trouble purchasing it. Hopefully, I’ll get that straightened out. You keep talking about limiting your palette colors, and I’m sure that depends on what you are painting. I notice that you have more colors in your palette than you necessarily use. I read your article on color substitutes for your most frequently used colors, but there are more on your palette here. How do I decide on additional reds/magentas, blues and yellows? I know I want warm and cool colors. I feel as though I have dabs of paint everywhere, in all different palettes. it would be nice to have one large one with a decent mixing area, and the one you’re using looks good to me.

Louise De Masi

When I ordered the paints for my Schmincke palette I bought a selection of cool and warm reds, yellows and blues and some earthy colours. I tried to choose single pigment colours as much as I could and I had a preference for transparent or semi transparent pigments over opaque or semi opaque pigments. I also tried to choose pigments that had a good lightfast rating. I made a few mistakes. There are a few colours that I won't order again.

Anne Watman

Thanks Louise. I watched your YouTube video today, and then I found your list of Schmincke paints with pigment codes. That took me to Hand Print, which is something I never understood, but is now fascinating.

Cheryl Doran

I really appreciate the substitute/alternate paint colors that you've listed! Can't wait to try this!

Nilanjana Bagchi

Hi Louise, greetings! I have Naples Yellow, Indian Yellow, New Gamboge, Lemon Yellow..Can I use any of these?

Nilanjana Bagchi

Thanks so much Louise for the super fast advice!

Samia Pasha

Hi Louise, I’ve been trying to send you a message via Patreon messaging box at the top but I’m unable to open it.

Samia Pasha

Hi Louise, can I have your email address please?

Samia Pasha

I’m unable to use Patron’s message box at the top of the page. Thank you

Jane Talbot

Is this your own reference photo Louise?

Louise De Masi

Hi Jane. Yes it is. I mentioned on the supplies list that it's mine.

Elizabeth Wolfram

what can I sub for pure yellow? I have lemon yellow hue, and cadmium yellow hue. And can I sub Phthalo Blue for Prussian blue?

Louise De Masi

Hi Elizabeth. Yes, you can make substitutions with the colours you already have. For Pure Yellow, I would use your Cadmium Yellow Hue rather than the Lemon Yellow Hue. You can also substitute Phthalo Blue for Prussian Blue. Just keep in mind that Phthalo Blue is much stronger and more intense, so you’ll only need a very small amount. It will give slightly brighter mixes, whereas Prussian Blue is more muted and softer. Thank you!

Lee Anne

I cannot find part 2 of Lilies. Where do I look, please?

Louise De Masi

Hi Lee Anne. You'll find a link to Part 2 in the description below the Part 1 video. For tutorials with multiple parts, I always include links to the other videos (in the descriptions). There's also a link back to Part 1 in the description below the Part 2 video
