Hi everyone,

Here's a tutorial for newbies.

It's good for beginners and teaches an efficient painting method using only two complementary colours to mix the necessary browns.

You'll practice various techniques such as wetting the paper, working with wet on wet, and charging colours into one another. As well as that, you'll do a bit of wet on dry painting, learn how to remove highlights from dry paper, and experiment with different paint consistencies, which is a crucial skill to master.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button. Colour substitutions are listed on the Supplies List.

Thanks,

Louise

This is wonderful! Can you please share more fruit and vegetables tutorials? A fruit basket or more food dishes would be so exciting to paint.

Anne Watman

I love these tutorials, Louise! Even though I’m working more and more on your intermediate and even advanced tutorials, these are always great refreshers. It gives me a chance to practice without so much pressure (my own, not yours)! Thank you!!

Joyce Wicks

Excellent! Agree this is perfect for beginners and a great refresher for more experienced painters. I remember some of my very first watercolors were an apple and an orange. Think there was an onion too. Thanks. Now back to the pretty lilies.

Thank you, Louise, this is just what I needed, I keep trying to run before I can walk... then failing, leading to a lot of discontentment on my part, this tutorial has helped my confidence like you wouldn't believe. It's simple but a nice subject to paint too, it looks like I know what I'm doing... well just a little!! ;)

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful Paula. I'm so glad it helped you. 💕

Robin

Paula you sound exactly like me. Love painting but keep getting discouraged.

Paula von Bestenbostel

Hi Robin, hmm, yes, its all because I want to paint things I'm clearly not capable if doing just yet! So I went back to the beginning and after doing the feather again, not very well either, I suddenly found myself wanting to paint the Tiger... I don't think there is any helping me tbh! All because I don't want to paint the Cactus! 😭😂 back to sqaure one again I think! 🤦‍♀️

Pam

Thank you for thinking of us noobs, Louise. The subject is perfect in its simplicity, and required time commitment. I have a small request – could you please provide an alternative option for specific colors, like the violet here? As a newbie with only 20 paint tubes, guidance on mixing colors to achieve a missing color or another color option would be incredibly helpful. I appreciate your thoughtful teachings as I navigate this learning journey in watercolor, trying to stay inspired despite life's demands. 😉

Louise De Masi

Hi Pam, Thank you! On the supplies list you'll see I've listed some colour substitutions in Schmincke and Daniel Smith brands. Alternatively, if you don't have a violet of any kind mix a cool red with a warm blue.

Pam

I didn't think of looking there, duh! Should have known you had this covered, Louise! Incidentally, and forgive me if this is covered somewhere, how do you tell a warm blue vs a cool blue and a warm red vs a cool red? Is it all relative? Are there guidelines? Looking at my tubes, I'm not entirely sure...Thank you!

Sally Ruth

HI Louise! How long do you leave your underpainting to dry? To the touch (say minutes) or completely, i.e. paper-and-all (say, several hours?)

Louise De Masi

Hi Sally, I let it dry to the touch and then I use the hair dryer on it usually for a minute or so to make sure it's completely dry.

Sally Ruth

Ok, great - thank you!!

I did the bunny which is marked for beginners and I found it more difficult than the chicken or rooster, which are intermediate advanced I believe. There are important beginner messages in the banana and bunny tutorials, but the point is try whatever you want.

Snow S

I did the banana tutorial but I used lemon yellow for transparent yellow because i didn't have transparent yellow. I think it turned out OK but I have no clue if it would have turned out better with transparent yellow. 🤔 I layered the lemon yellow a 2nd time after it dried because it didn't look yellow enough.

Louise De Masi

I'm glad it turned out ok. I don't think Transparent Yellow would have made it turn out better.

Snow S

Thanks Louise, I enjoyed the banana tutorial 🍌.😊

Vicky

Hi Louise, I don't have transparent yellow for my banana. I only have a lemon yellow hue and a cadmium yellow hue in Cotman Winsor & Newton. Which one should I choose? Thank you.

Louise De Masi

Hi Vicky - I think go for the Lemon Yellow Hue- but I don't think it will matter too much which one you use.

Vicky

Thank you Louise. I will go for the lemon yellow hue :).

Thank you for so many great tutorials and thoughtful explanations on everything. I am wondering why you don't bring the water all the way to the pencil line, could you explain this for me?

Louise De Masi

Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy you're enjoying the tutorials. When I work wet on wet, I sometimes leave a small margin of dry paper - a brush width or so - around the edge of the area I'm painting. This helps prevent water from pushing the paint all the way to the pencil line, where it can accumulate and create a dark, unsightly edge. For subsequent layers, I often wet all the way to the edge of the shape. This ensures the water covers the entire painted surface evenly, avoiding visible marks or tidelines caused by uneven drying of the water itself.

Thanks so much as always Louise… you are so lovely

Tiffany

Unfortunately I didn’t have the violet, the painting is in the bin 😂. From your Schmicke set what colours could I mix to make that violet? Thank you so much Louise. I will try again once I can figure out my violet 💜🍌

Tiffany

Thank you so much this is so helpful. I’ll study it now. Best Tiffany

Nad

This is another great tutorial. I do have a question: Why did you allow the paint to dry after the first yellow layer - before wetting the drawing again and adding the darker yellow? In the Apple tutorial the darker green was added on a wet layer of paint.

Louise De Masi

Thanks Nad, because beginners are doing this tutorial I worry that they won't be able to keep up so (just in case) I let layers dry. It could definitely be added before the first layer dries.

Hello, I am new to your Patreon and would like to say "Thank you!" for this superb tutorial. I enjoyed painting along with you and very much appreciated your explanations. I learned so much just from this one paint sitting. Thank you!

Tracy LaMarca

I loved this one! I can see it across the room from me and it looks real! I've tried other banana tutorials, but they just didn't come out "right!" Your use of the violet with the yellow did the trick! Thanks!
