Hi everyone,

I am often asked about how to sign paintings so I have a new blog post on my website addressing this question: https://www.louisedemasi.com/insights/2024/1/31/finding-the-perfect-artist-signature-for-your-paintings

For artists, a signature is more than just a name on a canvas – it's a personal touch, a final flourish that says, "This is my creation."

The Significance of Your Signature

Your signature is a testament to your journey as an artist. It's not just a method of identification; it's a stamp of authenticity, a mark of pride and accomplishment. It reflects the dedication and emotion poured into each piece.

Adding a personal touch your signature should be as unique as your art. It's a reflection of your style, your artistic voice. Whether it's bold or subtle, each stroke of your signature adds a personal narrative to your artwork.

How I sign my paintings

In my watercolor artworks, I've often used an archival fine point black ink pen for signatures, preferring the bottom right or left corner for subtlety. I avoid using paint as it can be challenging to keep the signature small and unobtrusive.

With acrylics, however, I used paint and a fine brush, choosing colours that blend well with the painting.

These days, for watercolours, I tend to use a fine mechanical pencil, signing in my usual style, ensuring it's on the front. Every artist has their preference; some use their brush and paint for this final, personal touch.

Best Practices for Your Signature Consistency is Key

Aim for a signature that’s consistent across your artworks. This helps in building your identity as an artist.

Harmony with Your Art

Ensure your signature complements your artwork. It should be noticeable without overpowering the piece.

Experimentation: Don't hesitate to try different styles or placements until you find what feels right for you. Your signature can evolve just as your art does. Your artistic journey is uniquely yours, and so is your signature. Embrace it as a proud statement of your creativity. Don't be afraid to let your signature evolve over time, just as you grow as an artist. Remember, each piece you create is a part of your story, and your signature is the beautiful underline that says, "I made this."

Not signing your work doesn't lessen its value or authenticity. Whether you choose to sign your artwork or not, what matters most is the passion and creativity that you pour into each piece. Your art speaks for itself, with or without a signature. Keep exploring and expressing yourself through your art and signature.

The points you make here are important to keep in mind. I never have it much thought until reading this but see that it can be an important expression of me.

Thank you. Being a newbie I’m nervous about signing my work, it feels pretentious. But I’m signing from now on!

Really need this! A while back I did days of research about signatures - was very unhappy about mine and made some mistakes that compromised my paintings...oh well. Your article was very helpful - thanks!

Louise De Masi

Definitely Susan. It's your work and you put so much of yourself into it. ❤️

Dear Louise, I just watched your painting of the 2 pigeons and I love it. Is there a place where I can get the outline and a list of supplies? Also I read all your advise on signing our painting❤️ Thanking you in advance. My email is pat1fay@hotmail.com. I love your work.

Thank you! I've created a small sign with my initials in a swirl, mostly with year (and month) and thinking of it.. it does represent me. Placing also, anywhere it feels good 😊

Louise De Masi

Great idea! Something that is uniquely you. Thanks Natascha.

Someone in my art group told me that I should sign my watercolor art in pencil. I've always used a Micron archival pen. Is there some rule about this? (in case I ever want to enter a show)

Louise De Masi

I've never come across a rule where it needs to be signed in pencil.

Thank you Louise for this important lesson for me ❤️
