It's hard to explain, but I do feel that Buffy hugging Spike would have been far more intimate than the peck of gratitude she gave him. There was no passion to that kiss, and I don't think it gave him the wrong idea, though I agree there was certainly the risk of that. As for this episode, the minions were only spying on the gang to make sure they were otherwise occupied so Glory could go after Tara uninterrupted, but the scene outside the Summers house was misleading, and you're not the only one who assumed they could hear Buffy and Dawn's conversation clearly through the window. Also, Willow and Buffy knew where Glory's apartment was because they rescued Spike from there in the previous episode And yes, it was already established that Glory and Ben do not share a mind or memories.
