After 7 years since we saw them in Despicable Me 3, the adult version of Gru is back with his family and his legion of Minions in Despicable Me 4. In this review, we’ll see if Gru can pass the ultimate test that few movie franchises are able to pass, and that is to still be strong after its trilogy. Even if Despicable Me 4 is getting the help of Maxime Le Mal and the Mega Minions to spice up the adventure, will that be enough to avoid a bad review and not have people develop franchise fatigue?

Well, to be straightforward we already saw it before you reviewed it. But still, overall I'm glad you enjoyed it. but I hesitate that this will be the end of Gru's antics. I never doubted the franchise even if this is their 6th feature, everyone had a great time and it's possibly the greatest comedy I've seen all year. Who knows how long they'll keep it up, at this point, I say it's now more of a series than a franchise—a TV show for theaters. That my only logic for it!

I’ll admit that as someone who does enjoy the Despicable Me movies, although I did find the Minions movies to just be ok, I was a bit unsure about having a 4th Despicable Me movie, because I didn’t wanna see it go down the same route as Ice Age, however I was honestly pleasantly surprised and I thought it was actually pretty decent, it’s not a great movie and it definitely has problems, but compared to other franchises that had a fourth movie, it could’ve been much worse. I will agree that the the story is a little bit messy with all the different subplots in the film, but it does make up for it with its humor, which is still pretty solid, the animation still looks nice, although I will agree that that it doesn’t really try anything new with it, and both the new and old characters are as good as always, although I will admit that not all the characters are really handled the best in the film, on top of the new villain actually being a nice addition. Overall, I would still say this is the weakest of the mainline Despicable Me movies, but it’s still pretty decent and again compared to other franchises that had a fourth movie that overstayed their welcome, it could’ve been much worse, and honestly I do hope that Illumination will end the franchise here it does provide a decent conclusion and I don’t want to see this franchise be run into the ground like something like Ice Age.

I laughed so hard at the part where you said that Gru did something! Thank you so much for the laugh!

I’m sorry but I’m gonna have to disagree almost everything that man said because Despicable Me 4 sucks and really needs to let this goddamn franchise die. Look I don’t hate everything from the franchise, I like the first two movies as they are best ones of the franchise but ever since the Minions movie came out, the franchise was getting worse with each new movie like the third main film was weaker than the first two films, and while Rise of Gru did improve than the 2015 film, it still not that good overall. Then this fourth main installment of the franchise aka movie number six came out and it sucked. All I can say positive that the animation is fine, voice acting is decent, and some action scenes were alright, but everything else looked like a total mess. The story was thin, the writing was weak as it has too many subplots and rehashes of what been done before in the third film, the characters aren’t even that charming anymore I didn’t like any of the new characters like Jack Jack rip off who reminds me of that baby from Son of a Mask of him tormenting his dad, Poppy was annoying, and the new villain sucked played by Will Ferrell as his motivation and his backstory was generic and by the weakest villain of the franchise, the humor wasn’t even especially it had some dated jokes like the “Boomer” joke or pop culture references like Terminator for example, it lacked any of the heart, and it pretty much lost it charm that this franchise once has. This is not mention of blaming on the direction especially that the director of this film and Illumination’s head, Chris Meledandri, said that have no interest in growing these up or give any character development especially the girls and treats it like The Simpsons of keeping them ageless forever which is a terrible idea if this the route they’re gonna go with. I’m sorry but this is worst film to come out the franchise since the 2015 Minions movie and one of Illumination’s worst films and they should’ve just let the franchise go right now if I were Illumination. I don’t care if it’ll make a billion again, but I’m getting sick of it right now of I’m giving me the same thing of what been done before and I’m just done. It been already in the Ice Age territory a long time ago that I argue for those that are saying that fourth film is at the boiling point. I don’t care Mat wants to defend or argue against my opinion but I don’t care, just put Despicable Me and the Minions franchise to rest and focus on other things like Mario 2 for example because I’m done with it overall.

I have to disagree that it been already run into the ground like with Ice Age a long time ago as the reviews response just keep getting worse.

Yes. I can hardly believe films like Frozen and The Lego Movie are now 10 years old and I still remember when they were new.

Well, I’m surprised this didn’t turn out so negative as I apprehended it’d be. I almost thought this was going to be another Ice Age: Collision Course-style review and this would end up with the AniMat Seal of Garbage. I wouldn’t have even been surprised if you did end up giving the SOG if your reaction was more negative. But I’ll admit even if your review didn’t turn out like I thought it would, it’s nice to hear you still ended up having a good time with the film and didn’t feel franchise fatigue from it.
