We’ve all seen tier lists where people do their ranking of movies from one animation studio, but what if we rank the animation studios themselves in one big tier list for a ranking video that will put them to the test to see which ones will go from S to F.

I gotta say this was a very solid tier list video, and I definitely agree with a lot of the choices, although I think one I will disagree with is Blue Sky, personally I would put ten in B tier, while I do think they have their fair share of duds especially with the later Ice Age sequels, I personally do enjoy a good amount of their movies.

This is an interesting ranking of where you rank the animation studio in your opinion. From the looks of it, I would agree most of your ranking. I can see GKIDS, Cartoon Saloon, and Studio Ghibli be on top more so than Disney Animation and Pixar given the reputation of Disney and Pixar have going through up and down. I can also see Lionsgate and especially The Weinstein Company go directly to the bottom as they usually put out some of the worst animated films they done. For the Sony Pictures Animation situation, this is the most interesting one as we’re dealing with two sides of Sony. For me, when it comes pre Spiderverse Sony, I would say that only Surf’s Up, Arthur’s Christmas, and yes I’m putting the first Cloudy film to be only ones that are considered good given those are the movies that critics and audiences do like those movies the most. The rest I find it either mid like Cloudy 2 and the first two couple of Hotel Transylvania films and while the rest like The Smurf movies in live action and especially The Emoji Movie that I do consider one of Sony’s lowest points. Then with the post Spiderverse Sony, they really do some amazing top tier movies like Spiderverse films and The Mitchells Vs The Machine as they are on par with Disney and Pixar where they lean more experimental and risky projects that usually come out awesome. I wouldn’t be surprised if Genndy Tartakovsky’s Fixed, their first 2D animated R rated movie would turn out to be great too if it lives up to that promise later on in maybe 2024 or so. The rest of the ranking for other studios like DreamWorks, Warner Bros, Illumination, and BlueSky for example, I don’t mind since that is what they currently are at this point. It a good interesting ranking picks though.

Wow! I wasn’t expecting the next tier list to be a ranking of the mainstream (and 2 defunct) animation studios. I was almost expecting a similar tier list to your first one with “Which Muppet Character Is Most Likely to Drop the F-bomb” where you would rank other animated characters based on which one would drop the F-bomb, but this is a good tier list and I think most of the your choices are pretty accurate to how they’d rank right now with Studio Ghibli, Cartoon Saloon and G Kids in the S tier rank, Pixar, Aardman and Disney in the A Tier rank, Dreamworks in the B tier rank, Blue Sky Animation Studios and Illumination in the C tier rank and especially Lionsgate and the Weinstein Company in the F tier rank. It’s interesting how you also split Sony into 2 for the rank based on their pre and after Spiderverse release. I’d think you’d put whole studio if you didn’t divide it in the B tier. But still glad to see this.

Fun Fact: On the back of Richard Williams’s “Animator’s Survival Kit” are acknowledgments from industry veterans who attended some of his masterclass seminars. Chris Wedge is the first person listed.

I thought of asking this at one point for your Super Secret Q & A, I am glad that you thought about this. And with the list itself, I would agree on all of them. Although I would have put Laika on B tier, but after thinking about it I do understand A tier as I do think that they can make great stuff but then again they only made 5 movies so I would give that a pass. As for stuff like WB Animation (not the Feature division), I did call that as I said that that division needs to slow down and stop manufacturing these movies as it isn't healthy anymore (which I will agree that they are on the same level as Disney Toon Studios). Trust me, after I saw their last movie Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, I fell asleep and my friends who got this movie regretted getting it. As for Illumination I am in the same camp to put it in C tier, but I did enjoy their latest movie, The Super Mario. Movie, as I had a good time with it. But after talking with my friend and learning from him that I found out that, "we were robbed" after learning that there was a score for the Donkey Kong segment before being taken out for Take on Me. But other than that, I do think this list would be identical to how I would place it (although I was surprised you included Studio Ghibli [I guess this might be the only exception], speaking of which going to go see "The Boy and the Heron" later this year Mat?)

Easily my favorite animation studio is Pixar. I think they have made some of the greatest animated movies out there. I especially grew up watching Finding Nemo which is my all time favorite.

One omission that somewhat caught me by surprise was Universal Animation because on one hand, their track record - especially with the onslaught of “Land Before Time” sequels - would definitely place them in a similar spot as DisneyToon and Warner Bros. Animation. Then again, it’s easy to forget how the “Curious George” franchise has debatably been as much a staple of Universal as “The Land Before Time” and “An American Tail” have.

This is great. As always Animat, you and I agree for the most part. Mind you, some of the distributors I have not heard of, so I can't say one way or another, but for the major MAKERS, you and I are on the came course. You rock, my fellow Canadian! Keep going!
