Also why they mentioned aging up their lyrics in the documentary just because that would be the natural progression as they’ve grown themselves

They are fascinated by the emotion of love itself, so sometimes their lyrics are very broad than it being specifically about romantic relationships, if that makes sense. Personally, Fake Love was sooo exciting because it brought a lot back from previous music videos and their storyline (Jimin with water, Suga with fire, even Jhope with the candy) and watching it was like finding little easter eggs. Their storyline is most obvious in the I NEED U and RUN music videos (i miss the hyyh era 😔) and then their solo music videos from the wings era. I really appreciate that you guys watch the MV first and then read the lyrics after because with BTS, both matter a lot. The lyrics are obviously huge, but the MVs usually aren’t just flashy visuals or choreo either, there’s often a lot of symbolism and storyline details layered in. Like in Fake Love, the MV visually shows the idea of losing yourself for love: RM’s mirror scene connects to confusion/identity, J-Hope lying on a pile of candy relates to confronting deep fears of abandonment, V’s phone turning to dust can represent broken communication, and Jungkook letting sand slip through his fingers gives that feeling of everything falling apart. That’s why when you eventually get to Spring Day, I really recommend watching an explanation with the MV, because it adds so much emotional meaning to the song and how you interpret it. It’s also a song very dear to many ARMYs’ hearts 💜

yeah tbh you can understand “Fake Love” just from the lyrics alone, it already makes sense emotionally, just a small extra info… it’s part of the Bangtan Universe (BU), which is basically this connected storyline BTS made across a lot of their older MVs where everything feels like one big world instead of separate videos, and it has a bit of a fantasy vibe too 😭 like symbolic stuff, dreamlike scenes, walls, doors, mirrors, alternate timelines and things that don’t feel fully real but are used to tell the story, and if you watch more than one MV in order you’ll start noticing the links like same characters, repeating visuals, and scenes that connect like a puzzle, back then ARMY were super deep into theories trying to piece everything together and understand what’s happening in that universe version of BTS, and also there was extra side content outside the MVs like notes and other releases that helped connect and understand the story more, but not now it’s more like an old era thing 😂 anyway you don’t need to follow any of it at all, you can just enjoy the song normally and it still hits, I just wanted to share a bit of BTS history and how things used to be back then with their MVs and songs

Yeah DNA and IDOL are definitely BTS’s two most colourful MVs haha. Around that 2017–2018 era, super bright/vibrant k-pop MVs were pretty common. Like with TWICE, Red Velvet, BLACKPINK, GOT7, etc. After and before this era, their MV visuals become a lot more varied, so each comeback ends up having a really different vibe.

While writing this I realized I’d gone on for quite a while, so I apologize for that. 😭💜 21:02 Close! But It’s actually the opposite. BTS has album trilogies and both "DNA" and "Fake Love" are part of the Love Yourself series, which explores different stages of falling in love. In order the albums are: - Love Yourself: Her This represents falling in love in a very innocent and pure way, similar to a first love. - Love Yourself: Tear When you face a heartbreak, especially the most painful parts, like being in a toxic relationship. - Love Yourself: Answer Is about healing and learning to love yourself. I think that now with this context you can understand the lyrics of each song more clearly. -"DNA" is the title track of Love Yourself: Her. In its lyrics, you can see how they talk about an overwhelming and idealized love for someone else. -"Fake Love" is the title track of Love Yourself: Tear, and it’s essentially the complete opposite. That seemingly perfect love shown in "DNA" turns out to be fake (love) and harmful. -"IDOL" is the title track of Love Yourself: Answer, you guys already reacted to that one and if you remember the lyrics you can see how they’ve reached self-love. ✨👏🥳 That said, there are videos that explain all of this with way more detail since it’s a bit more complex and honestly, it’s best experienced through the music and lyrics of the other songs as well. ✨💜

Thanks for the reaction, guys!! Fake Love really is one of their strongest title tracks. It makes sense why it’s such a fan favorite (mine included ;) I love how practical the MV set is! Also, I’d like to make a suggestion for when you get to The Most Beautiful Moment in Life songs! A lot of the MVs from that era are connected through a storyline, so it can get confusing if you watch them separately. I’d recommend this order: I Need U (Original Ver.) > Prologue: On Stage > Run > Young Forever. The original version of I Need U is longer and makes the story easier to follow, and the Prologue is basically a concept trailer that’s really important for understanding the narrative (and it teases a few tracks of the album too!). Really appreciate that you guys took time to read the lyrics. In my opinion, the lyrics are the core of BTS. Most new fans would think that the reason BTS is so popular is because of their looks and dances. That might be true for some people. Yes, their outfits and dances are fire, but if you try to understand the meaning of each of their songs you’ll come to appreciate their artistic creativity more. It’s actually perfect that you guys reacted to these 2 songs and IDOL. They’re the title songs for the “Love Yourself” albums trilogy, starting from DNA, Fake Love, and IDOL. Each song represents each state of the journey for one to learn to appreciate and love themselves truly. For me, DNA tells the perspective of a person in love. You’d think of your lover as a soulmate. You’re destined to be together. Some people are so in love that they’d change who they are just to please their lover, thus Fake Love. It tells a story about the suffering of one person in a relationship where they have to sacrifice themselves for the sake of love. The relationship that requires you to sacrifice who you are just to maintain the love of the other is not healthy anymore, so in IDOL they just gonna put themselves first. The lyrics in IDOL, “You can’t stop me loving myself”, tell you exactly that. I really recommend you watching the Rise of Bangtan series. You’ll get to know them and their songs from the start and see how much they grew. Also, you’ll see the evolution of their music too. Please give it a thought.

I'm loving the interpretations of the lyrics btw. BTS has so many songs where their lyrics have double or even triple meanings, and without knowledge about Korean word-plays or culture, it can be hard to grasp the full meaning of what they're trying to say. Every song about "love" can be interpreted not just for romantic love, like you guys said, but the one that the boys touch on the most frequently and promote the most aka "self love". They delve into very deep topics that at the time, and perhaps even now, most kpop groups didn't, like depression (I Need U), loss of youth (RUN), temptation (Blood, Sweat and Tears), loving oneself (their entire Love Yourself album trilogy!), and even societal failures and pressures (Baepsae). Honestly, there's so much that is so relatable, and it's what pushed them to become so popular among the fans and general public.

The 'I'm Fine/Save Me' ambigram was a concept used by organizations for mental health campaigns. Around 2015, the ambigram got even more attention when a student named Bekah Miles, who suffered from depression, posted a tattoo of the ambigram online. On 2016 under HYYH album, BTS have a song called Save Me. Watching these two together was a great coincidental choice because they’re actually part of the ‘Love Yourself’ trilogy of bts albums, where the first album of the trilogy is about the idealised image we can have about love and how we experience it (DNA is the title track), then the second album is about the disillusion and loss of identity we can experience through that process (FAKE LOVE as title track) and lastly the final album of that trilogy is called Love Yourself: Answer, it is about self-love and self-acceptance as the final step of this journey (with IDOL as the title track)

In Fake Love, the fake love and the lie is coming from themselves. They wrote this during a particularly difficult time for them, during their 2017-2018 rise to global dominance. They were really struggling under the weight of it and even considered disbanding. Several songs came out of the struggle of that time, including Fake Love. Fake Love is addressed to ARMY, as they are usually so honest and open with us but during this time they were in a lot of pain and confusion and were hiding it behind a smiling mask and that lie felt like a deep betrayal to them and they hated it. But how do you tell the people who brought you overwhelming global success that you are drowning in that same success without sounding ungrateful? They eventually told us all of this. The song is also a treatise on the nature of fame overall, and that is behind the theme of the puppets/marionettes, on which the choreography is based: a fake person/doll/puppet pulled on strings by outside forces of the industry. There are also See/Hear/Speak No Evil moves in the choreography which is about lying as well. The artwork with the hands is in the proper scale to them to be the hands of a puppeteer, as they fan out in puppet poses in front of it, but also is a stylized representation of the See/Hear/Speak No Evil moves again. Fake Love and DNA are from the same album series, the Love Yourself Series, exploring all types of love (not just romantic.) That is why they seem two sides of a coin on the same subject. DNA is from the 'Love Yourself: Her' album, about fate and destiny. Fake Love if from the 'Love Yourself: Tear' album, both tear as in crying and tear and in tearing apart, which is about when love goes wrong. The other albums in the series are 'Love Yourself: Answer' and 'Face Yourself' the Japanese release in the series.

DNA is also about each other, you are right. They believe it was fate that they met. I don't even know if you read these comments, but I can break down Fake Love for you too: Fake Love is not about other people showing fake love towards them. The fake love is coming from themselves. It's about not being honest with themselves, and about themselves and therefore not being honest with their loved ones, and so their love also cannot be honest. It's actually one of my favorite songs for the layers and nuance of the storytelling. There are multiple layers of story being told here. Story Level 1) Toxic Romance A surface level story about toxic romance, except the fake love is coming from themselves because they are not being honest with their loved one. Story Level 2) Bangtan Universe Storyline. This song lyrically and especially the MV visually is deeply connected to their supernatural BU storyline in which all the guys play fictional characters with the same names as themselves, but who are dealing with some really serious life challenges. The BU arcs across their whole discography, and the story is unfolded in clues given in multi-media, including - lyrics, MVs, album notes, books, web toons, short films, their mobile app game BTS World and more. The story is still ongoing and also has a KDrama inspired by it called "Begins ≠ Youth." In the BU storyline context, this song is speaking to each other about things they are hiding from one another and others in their lives, and how it leads to them lying to themselves and not really knowing themselves. There are a ton of connections to the BU visually like the water, the fire, the flower and petals, the cell phone, the candy, the sets, and on and on. Story Level 3) Fame This song is a general treatise on the nature of fame, and how one hides parts of oneself or is manipulated by outside forces in order to please others, and that this can lead to a level of disingenuousness and even identity crisis. Story Level 4) The real story The story that is deeply personal to BTS is that this is a song communicating directly from themselves to ARMY. At this time, they were in the midst of their global rise to fame (2017-2018) and they were really struggling with how to deal with it all. Several songs came out of this struggle, including this one, Outro: Tear, and possibly also Let Go, The Truth Untold and 134340. They were considering disbanding during this era because the pressure and the burnout were so intense that they were collapsing under them. Because BTS are always so honest and open with ARMY, not sharing this struggle with us, smiling and acting like everything was fine, felt to them like a deep betrayal. So rather than a general treatise on fame, it is specific to their own story. But how do you tell the people who love and support you that you are drowning in your own success which they helped achieve for you? They did come clean eventually, starting with their sob fest of an Artist of the Year acceptance speech at the 2018 MAMAs. Their later song Make It Right was also born of this struggle, as it was them saying they were sorry to ARMY for ever thinking of disbanding when we were with them every step of the way, shielding and supporting them even when they thought they were facing their struggles alone. The remix for Make It Right with Lauv has an animated MV that illustrates this. Story Level 5) Dance This choreography, like all their choreographies, is part of the storytelling. In the dance there are masking moves and See/Hear/Speak No Evil moves and choking moves, which are all related to lying. In the extended version of the MV they actually put on masks. The final scene with the masked character is part of the extended MV. There is a move where j-hope is scolding himself, saying "Who are you?" in "a mirror" as JK mirrors his moves. This also mirrors the part in the lyrics and MV where RM is looking in a mirror at an unfamiliar self and also asking "Who are you?" The heart of the choreography, however, is marionette based, a puppet/doll/fake person, being pulled on strings by forces outside of themselves. Many of the moves are puppet based such as the way the drop and rise, the way they judder and pop, the way they throw their arms out and make their limbs loose, the way Jimin stands in the center and waves his arm and the others move along, and so on. If you look at the art with the giant hands, they are in scale to BTS to be the hands of a puppeteer, as BTS fan out in silhouette in front of them in puppet poses. The hands are also stylized in the positions of See/Hear/Speak No Evil positions. This is my favorite version of the live choreography with a dance break in the middle that really emphasizes the puppet theme. In this song, every transition has a rise or crash sound in the production, building a tension and release, tension and release feeling, like a puppet being jerked around by strings. It creates a feeling of suspension, building up pressure and tension overall in the song. The flow of jumping back and forth through the whole song between rap and singing in almost every line, and the layering or stacking of vocals with rap underneath, and rap with vocals underneath, adds to the feeling of building tension even though the overall feel of the song is melancholy, so sadness within tension, in other words = struggle.
