Hey guys!

I managed to [clumsily] film a bit of the process of mounting the last of the acoustic panels in the studio! A couple of you had asked how it works, so I hope this can show you. :)

I ran the sound analysis test again and the reverb in the room did go down a bit more! Wooo! Here's the image I had shared in the previous video (the Finally in the Studio one):

And here's where we're at now after these extra panels on the side walls. As you can see, we are now in the .300 - .400 millisecond range, spending more time in the .300's rather than the .400's which is great!

For now, I will keep the room at this reverb level. I'm concerned that if I add too much treatment, then it will sound "dead" and uninspiring. To me, it feels awkward to sing and play guitar when the sound doesn't carry and can't bounce back to you. When I used to sing in my old bedroom at my parents house, which was carpeted, I used to sit and sing in front of a full length mirror, just to be able to get a reflection of the sound. hahaha! I guess I've always been obsessed with reverb, huh?

I do have a plan for if I'm ever required to submit a completely dry recording for a project. I'll be doing some tests for this and sharing them over the weekend. It involves a slightly strange product that I'm hoping will surprise us and not be a gimmick. Hehehe!

Thank you for watching! And welcome to all of you who have recently joined. I hope you enjoy the extra bits and clips!

Big hug,

Malu

That looks great! Another PhD added to your growing list! :)

Big hug back, Tianhong! :D

Hehehe! Malukah Acoustics PhD! :D Thanks for watching! <3

Nice one. If you get some velcro chess pieces, we could play online chess on the checkerboard part of the wall. Chocolate Labrador to queen's bishop five...

malukah

Hahahahahahaha! :D Imagine if Thor turns out to be a chess genius????? hahaha! :D

Great job Malukah! :D The studio looks great!

I'm curious, what do the different panels do? As in, what's the difference between the squares and the rectangles? And I totally understand trying to get the panels perfectly aligned. Whenever I build or fix anything, all I see are the mistakes, every time. I'm happy to see that the studio is even better, and I look forward to hearing what you can do in it.

0_0 I have heard of that guy somewhere before ..... ;? Looking good there Malu. I am happy to see the basically flat reflection above 500Hz. The 125Hz hump is interesting but may well be the result of Primary Driver Resonance. I am assuming the final graph was done after the lower panels. But yea, other than finishing the glass door proccess and such I would agree with trying the room as is. Don't want to kill the room but that slight feeling of muting when entering is what you want. Gratefully some other issues I was concerned with after studing the room seem to have worked out which saves me A LOT of typing and re-graphing to show certain patterns and you A LOT of redoing pains..... So we will be grateful for the gift lol. If you have a bit of time however, I would be very interested in seeing the graphs measured in other points of the focus area. But from what I am seeing I think you are probably set . :) Sorry to take so long in posting here but has been a long day and am only now getting home again.

Looks amazing... enjoy your new toy! From your response charts it looks like the Broadway Panels handled the low end quite well. I will have to look into those!

malukah

Thanks, Brenden! They did help! I also put some leftover acoustic foam I had behind the ones on the wall behind me. That added another small improvement. :D

malukah

Hey John! :D No worries about taking a while to respond. It's understandable! And yes! I will take some measurements from other points and send over the results! (The night I finished I was so tired I just took one). I also continue thinking about that 125Hz issue... I'm wondering if replacing a couple of the lower Broadway bass traps with actual, true bass traps would work... I've seen in the absorption charts the bass traps do have a much higher absorption... I'm super happy overall, but all of this just made me more curious to learn and to figure out how to improve it. hahahaha!

malukah

Hehehe! Yeah, that little gap, I'm so glad it's gone. hahaha! The biggest panels, the "Broadway Panels" are meant to absorb frequencies to they don't reflect as much. The "Control Columns" (the longer ones) have a similar purpose. The small, squared panels are meant to provide soft diffusion, so when sound hits the back wall, for example, they will absorb a little, but reflect the rest in different directions. This disperses the sound around the room and doesn't encourage frequencies to bounce back and forth in one same direction. I'm not sure I am explaining myself. hehehe!

malukah

Definitely soooo much science. I knew this stuff existed and that it made a difference, but it's only now that I'm getting to see it and hear it myself in action that I am in shock! :D So much to learn, too!

WildestHydra904

Don't worry, I understand perfectly. This whole thing is pretty interesting, all the different sound waves and how they interact with objects sounds really cool. (Pun intended) I like learning about something I'm totally clueless about. Thank you for the info.
