Hello everyone! It has been over a year (!!) since I've updated the majority of my subclass compendiums, so I think it is time to start revisiting these - starting with the Barbarians' Compendium of Primal Paths.

I've learned a lot as a designer (both game design and graphic design) since I last worked on my subclass compendiums, so I'm very excited to give them a fresh coat of paint over the next couple of months!

PRIMAL PATHS!

Included here are 12 Primal Paths, 2 Alternate Primal Paths, and 2 Patreon Exclusive Primal Paths for a total of 16 Barbarian Subclasses - PHEW!!!!

Most of them have only had slight updates to bring them in line with the versions I created for my Alternate Barbarian Class. However, there are a few new things:

Path of the Champion (NEW). Have you ever noticed how well the Champion Archetype for the Fighter fits on the Barbarian? I have! With some small tweaks, you've now go the perfect subclass to play as an Olympian Hero.

Path of the Favored (NEW). Touched by Fate, play as a wondrous hero of legend who has a way of succeeding when all others fail. Ever wanted to play Heracles, Ajax, Achilles, or Beowulf? Try out this Primal Path!

Path of the Packleader (NEW). It has been fun adding a "pet" subclass to the other classes, so I thought I'd give it a shot with the Barbarian. I recommend flavoring your Savage Companion as a Giant Boar.

Path of the Reaver (Update). Instead of (awkwardly) straddling the designs of my Alternate Fighter and the PHB Battle Master, this Primal Path now gains access to a curated list of Maneuvers from the PHB Battle Master. Check out the version for my Alternate Barbarian if you want a Barbarian with Alt Fighter Exploits.

Path of the Wyrmblood (NEW). Another subclass that Fizban forgot; the dragon Barbarian! This subclass was pretty low-hanging fruit, and won't win any awards for being the most unique subclass I've designed, but I think it would be a classic archetype that would be great fun to play.

Path of Beauty (Patreon Exclusive). Please don't use this to play as a Magical Girl Barbarian, that would be a terrible idea and you definitely shouldn't do it.

Path of the Wilder (Patreon Exclusive). What if you had psionic powers that you never learned to control and they only came out while you were Raging?! Based on my take on the Psion class.

Barbarian Primal Paths by laserllama

At 3rd level, a Barbarian gains the Primal Path feature. The following options are available to a Barbarian, in addition to those in the Player's Handbook and other official options: The Brute The Inferno The Reaver The Champion The Lycan The Titan The Deep The Mutant The Warden The Favored The Packleader The Wyrmblood While most barbarians hail from the wild places of the world, brutes discovered their Rage in the underbelly of civilization.

I love the paths of champions honestly I don’t know why but the idea of champion subclass fits better as a Barbarian to me.

laserllama

100% agreed! If I had to guess, Maneuvers were a base part of the Fighter until the last few weeks of the playtest. People really didn't like them so they got reduced to one subclass (Battle Master). "Hey, we only have one Fighter subclass and the PHB goes to the printer in 48 hours, what should we do?" "Just take one from the Barbarian, nobody will notice."

Andrew Downs

Love these new Paths!!!! Finally, we have a companion subclass and a new raging dragon path! Wahoo!!

Francesco Valvo

I like the new subclasses, but I don't like the new format. I think that having one subclass per page was better.

Francesco Valvo

While I understand that the Wilder is based on your take on the Psion class, I would love to see psionic subclasses based on the Psionic Energy dice feature.

laserllama

I thought that feature was interesting, but I currently don't have any plans to make anything that uses that feature.

laserllama

Thanks for your honesty! I try to keep my content as close to official content as I can, and that includes formatting this way. (At least I don't have abilities split over multiple pages).

Francesco Valvo

First of all, sorry if my comment sounded too rude, but English is not my first language, so it is not always easy to find the right words to use. I know that the official content is formatted this way, but I was so happy seeing you using a different (and better, IMHO) one! But I do appreciate that abilities aren't split over multiple pages!

You say "magical girl" Barbarian, I say "chosen of Slaanesh" Barbarian 😈

Francesco Valvo

I think the Path of the Inferno should be named Path of the Abyss instead, as Inferno means Hell. For the same reason, I think the 3rd level feature Hellish Presence should be named Abyssal Presence or Fiendish Presence...

laserllama

It’s kind of a blend between Demon/Devil stuff and intended to be used for either.

Francesco Valvo

The features always mention the power of the Abyss, and with Hellish Presence you even learn to speak Abyssal, so I thought it's a path for "cultists and worshipers of Archdemons" only.
