Yesterday, the Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the Episcopal Bishop of Washington, gave a remarkable speech at the Inaugural Prayer Service. She gave it right to Felon 47's face. She gave it right to the Ohio Shillbilly's face.

I tried here to basically lyricize it, without reinterpreting it. No added or excluded meaning; no sarcasm or snark. I really tried to serve both the words and the spirit, and not my own ego. Please let me know how I did. The music will be original, a gentle gospel.

Mr. President, let me make one final plea.

You said you’ve felt a loving God, in his name, show mercy.

There are so many people living scared

Whose only crime is life for which they never had prepared.

Gay, lesbian, transgender, and their families,

Democrat, Republican, Independent -- please.

Mr. President, they're fearing for their lives,

They only want to be here, sons and daughters, husbands, wives,

They pick our crops, in offices they clerk,

In hospitals and poultry farms, they make the country work.

They wash our dishes, take our trash, gave up some self-esteem,

They may not have the proper papers, but they have the Dream.

Mr President, show mercy for your part.

They are NOT mostly criminals, they're neighbors of good heart,

They pay taxes, and join our community

In churches, mosques, and synagogues, their faith is there to see.

To be taken from their kids or parents is their greatest fear,

Help those fleeing war and persecution find compassion here.

God tells us “to the stranger lend a hand;

Be merciful, for we were all once strangers in this land.”

God grant the strength and courage from above,

To honor other's dignity, to speak the truth in love.

Mr. President, please answer the call,

Walk humbly with us for the good of all.

(Gentle but rising choral “Amen”)
