[UPDATE July 22, 2021: I've revised these chapters by moving Yassi's scene from Chapter 10 to Chapter 12, to better coordinate with the main timeline. There's a slight change in what she sees and says, to match the new timeframe.]

The next release for Book 4 is ready, which covers chapters 10 to 12.  With this, we transition from Act 1 to Act 2 of the book. Act 1 has been a little long and slow, but things will pick up from here on out.

I hope you enjoy, and please let me know if you notice any typos or have any feedback.

Nice chapter! Is there a glossary somewhere?

RMN

Well done. I liked how you handled the travel sequences. We got the flavor of the journey without having to spend much of the trip with them.

ivyveritas

There's the list of important characters here on Patreon--scroll down or check the "resources" tag. It includes major characters and places up through the end of Book 2. I've considered doing an actual glossary of terms, but haven't put one together yet.

Raman BNV

Nice work! I'm going out on a limb here, but it occurred to me that Corec could, at some point, kill the dragon and take over the old keep...

Raman BNV

or also that Zachal would turn out to be Corec's ancestor, and that is why Corec has some powers...

Aspiring Sage

The Dragon Keep is definitely a Chertov's gun in the story. It's location is also perfect in regards to what the characters have said they want.

Aspiring Sage

Hmmm... I don't think so. Because then Treya might be Corec's sister or half-sister!! Arodisis was Zachel's lover back before he died during the burning and also Treya's (Godess) mother.

Aspiring Sage

Ivy, thank you for another great chapter. It was more boring than most, but it advanced the story well. I am still a bit confused by the deal the team gave to Hildra. Can you explain that on here a bit more? Also, Treya's mystic friend who is on that quest to find a stolen item, isn't that the item that Renzi said she stole in her 'big job' with the other daemonborn from Tyrsall? Or am I mixing up two different things?

Aspiring Sage

Also, I have a bad feeling about that mystic going up to Hightower at the same time that King Rasul is looking for new mages to add to his team. She wouldn't count as a mage though right?

ivyveritas

Hildra paid one thousand gold pieces for sole rights to use shaping magic (metal-shaping and stone-shaping) within the continent of Cordaea. Ellerie kept the book, but she and Hildra copied the spells and formulas out for Hildra to keep (that copying happened off screen and isn't detailed). Ellerie's going to offer 500 to keep the rights in northwest Aravor for herself, and offer the remaining worldwide rights to Senshall for just 1000 gold in exchange for giving her more time before announcing the location of Tir Yadar. Shana's job isn't related to Razai's. Shana was recovering some jewels that were stolen in Chondor recently, while the heist job you're thinking of that Razai participated in was years ago, in Valara (which happens to be on the other side of the continent, though I haven't released that part of the map yet). The chapters were a bit slow, but we had to get through nearly three months of time, and I didn't feel like we could skip over it entirely.

ivyveritas

Most people wouldn't consider mystics to be mages.

jw

We shouldn't forget who Corec's mother is ... or his grandmother. That could explain things pretty well on its own.

Aspiring Sage

Thank you for the reply. Follow on queation. Since the book was part of the expedition find, wouldn't the money gained from it also have to be split? Regarding the jewel heist, thanks for the clarification. Can you tell us if we are missing a connection? I feel like Shanas off-screen story arc has been mentioned half a dozen times, but I can't seem to pin point the purpose of those mentions. What am I missing based on what has already been told. I admit, part of the issue is reading chapters months apart. O may have to go back and Re read the whole thing from the start again.

Aspiring Sage

Got it. Should we take that to definitively mean Wardens cannot bondmate them?

Aspiring Sage

Regarding the time-lapse travel. I think you are handling that VERY well. Both to move the story forward, and also by showing that the characters developed off screen just as they travelled off screen. It's very well done.

ivyveritas

Regarding the book of shaping magic: Yes, any proceeds must be split. So if they decide the knowledge in the book is worth 2500 gold, that amount is split across 18.75 shares. But if they then sell a big chunk of that to themselves, it has to come out of the shares of the people who are buying it. As an example, if you combine all the earnings and projected earnings, each share comes out to about 300 gold. Ellerie has two shares, worth 600 gold total. But out of her share, she's already purchasing the spellmail, she's helping Corec's group out with purchasing the armory and other supplies, and paying for guardsmen, and she's giving some money to the people with partial shares to make up for the fact that she's selling the remaining shaping rights to Senshall for less than what it's worth. That means that although she's offering 500 gold for shaping rights in northwest Aravor, she didn't have 500 left on her own, so she had to partner with Boktar and Bobo.

ivyveritas

Regarding Shana: Some parts of Shana's storyline may be connected to the main story. Other parts are simply to highlight that there's an entire world out there that continues to run regardless of what our main characters do. Similar to Hildra mentioning the things she learned in Ewori and Vestath, even though the story has never visited those continents. In Shana's case, it also serves as a reminder to the readers about her role as a roving troubleshooter, since it's been a while since she was mentioned.

Aspiring Sage

Sooooo... I know it's barely been two weeks Ivy. But do you think the next release will be around July 20 or earlier? Looking forward to the story's progression now that they are back in Tyrsall. And how they will treat the news of King Rasul. I am also surprised the First has not updated the rest of the Wardens about the death of Leonis. After all, that will affect everyone's numbers. They will need new business cards and everything lol.

ivyveritas

On the planned timeline, I'd be hoping for the next release to come out on or before July 16th, but I'm having a bit of trouble with this batch so it may be later. Some of the scenes I'd originally planned for Tyrsall just feel like filler, and I don't want to include filler scenes. They're tedious to write and they don't advance the story. I need to do a re-think on which scenes to include and how far to advance the plot in these chapters. As for the First, he won't know Leonis is dead until the next time he tries to talk to him, which could take a while.

Aspiring Sage

Hmmm.. but shouldn't 'The Lady's spell trigger to create a new eighth warden? That would in turn inform the First right? But now that I think on it, I guess it took 3 years between Rasul and Corec, so the spell might not trigger yet.

Aspiring Sage

Oh, and thank you for the update. Are you considering any updates on what is going on in Sinavar? I am guessing Leena is making regular visits and would get updates on the interrogation and the search for the snake men. I am also curious how Bobo is internally handling being a priest of Fox. Even if no one else knows, he does right? He would surely talk to others beyond Treya. At least Corec whom he seems to respect and trust. Another idea to consider for inclusion is to let us in on Corec's thoughts on how he would go about recruiting fighters and running 'background checks' on them or the equivelant. Also how he thinks, the logistics would work to arm, train, and organize them. This would also be an opportunity for world building and Corec should have the relevant knowledge from his knight training and plenty of appropriate contacts for fruitful conversations based on his caravan contacts. Would be awesome if Rezai somehow falls into the role of being his bodyguard or captain of guards or something.

Aspiring Sage

Also, I am sure you will include plenty of conversations with Yelena. But I would love to see some real curiosity and depth in those conversations. Yelena being a scholar means she would jump at the chance to talk to a closer and should be screwed and informed enough to make some major conceptual breakthroughs about the old Wardens and new God's and catch the characters up to what the readers should or could know by this point in the story. I am sure Yelena would also be very interested in the Snake storyline as well. Not to mention she will be most impressed and interested in knowing about Hildra! I am very much looking forward to these conversations taking up a whole long chapter as it's a great opportunity for an in-story info-dump that won't break up your rhythm or seem forced. Please consider this a constructive comment: I generally love that you are leaving it up to readers to fit in pieces of the puzzle, but this deep into book 4, I think the readers need a bit more of a payoff from canon (directly from the author) rather than just hoping the hints and clues are enough. Just my two cents!

Aspiring Sage

* Should be "talk to a Chosar" not 'talk to a closer'. And *shrewd not 'screwed'

ivyveritas

Some of your suggestions are already in the outline; it's just a matter of figuring out where to place them. But I wanted to reply to your comment about The Lady's spell to create a new warden. She's commented a few times that the threads she was weaving are now split in two--still out there, but unanchored to anything. However, the spell had very, very specific criteria. I don't want to comment anymore and give away spoilers, but you shouldn't expect to see a quick resolution to that particular storyline. As The Lady said, "That’s a problem for the future."

ivyveritas

I don't think I'll get the next batch of chapters out by the 16th, which was my original target, but I think I've mostly figured out the part I was struggling with, and now I just need to bring it all together. Let's say sometime between the 20th and the 22nd?

Aspiring Sage

Hey Ivy, how close are we getting to the next release?

ivyveritas

Either the 21st or 22nd, Pacific time.

Dracon

New member ivy. So I’m seeing you average one batch a month rite? Seems pretty good.

ivyveritas

I'm currently aiming for one batch every four weeks, but I don't always make it. Occasionally, there might be two batches in a month (at the very beginning and the very end), but that's pretty rare these days.

Aspiring Sage

But in the end, consistency counts for a lot for us readers Ivy. So we salute your production. I honestly wish you had far more readers.
