A new graphic for The Eighth Warden, presented without any description, context, or explanation.

Feel free to speculate below.

I'm curious whether anyone will figure it out before the end of Book 4.

Interesting... the three parallel lines could be alluding to the lines mentioned in Ellerie's memory when she put on the jade bracelet... this has got to be something to do with the collision. Badru's dream world could also be referenced here Also, the 8 lines could be the eight wardens? or the 8 Totems?

Here is my take at the moment. The eight lines obviously represent the wardens. I think the large gap between the groups of lines indicates the time gap. 1st and 2nd are much older than the rest, 3rd is much older than 4-8th, but not remotely close to the age of 1st and 2nd. At first I thought the Warden line going through another one would be the killing of Warden 5 by 7, but Leonis is 4th, perhaps Warden 5 and 7 will work together? The single vertical line is Corec, the eight. Unlike the rest of the wardens, he is an outlier. As mentioned by The Lady and the rest, the eight Warden was chosen too soon. Perhaps the downwards trajectory of the horizontal lines indicate their descent into madness? The First has been mentioned quite frequently to be mentally unstable, hence the downwards trajectory for the 1st line. The second seems stable. Third was, from her own commentary, quite power hungry and forced her will on others, but now she is more calm and collected, hence the upwards sloop. The same can be said for 7, though Rusol is a bit more weird. 4th, 5th and 6th are all mentally stable due to their relative young age compared to other Wardens. 2nd is surprisingly stable as well according to this thought process.

Intriguing. My first thought was the next bonding mark. But it seems too complex for that. Eight lines in total four of them horizontal one vertical and three askew. I'm sure that means something.

Spiderfox

I like some of this, but I believe the vertical line belonged to Leonis

Jesse

It is in Yellow. Corec's runes/Sigils are in Blue. Even the Rune he placed on the enchanted Hammer was blue.

Jesse

Hildra's are Purple. Yelena's are Red. Badru's are White. I know Rusol's are mentioned when he bonded Yassi but I haven't yet located where that is to re-read it. I also need to re-read the section where Leonis was killed to see if the color of his bonds are mentioned since he still has Bondmates alive.

ivyveritas

Rusol's are yellow, but he uses little stylized animal figures that he sketches out beforehand.

Yes, I discounted it on complexity but didn't think about the color good point.

My guess: The lines represent the 8 Totems. The 3 horizontal lines at the bottom show Snake, Fox and Wolf which are conscious (again). The top horizontal line symbolizes Raven who is obviously also restoring his consciousness; after fully healed the line will be above the 3rd bottom line. The vertical line belongs to Owl which is death, it has to be determined whether a Totem is able to rise from “death” (why not?). The two almost horizontal lines belong to Bear (top) and Stag (bottom) which are currently both more animal than an intelligent entity, but they are on the way to recovery. The diagonal line could represent Hawk who according to Raven is death, it could symbolize that Hawk is somewhere between live and death, because Raven in its current state of mind is not a trustful source of information. I assume when all Totems are completely recovered, there will be eight even spaced horizontal lines. In addition, the lines could also represent “levels or regions” on the totem realm, where each “level” belongs to one Totem to which a mage can travel with the help of the jade bracelet. The vertical line would symbolize that the “level” belonging to owl is not accessible. The only point which does not fit in this theory is the fact that the new gods are living in the totem realm and can obviously move between the totem realm and Corec’s world. Perhaps, the new gods had only access to Snakes and Fox’s “level”. Anyway, this is a far-fetched theory as good or bad as any other and please excuse my weak English it’s not my native language.

Spiderfox

Because he's dead now. I also like the Totem theory below.

There are honestly a lot of things functioning off the number eight. Likely too many to logically eliminate most of them. The new gods/"old Wardens", the Totems, the new Wardens, each Warden's potential bondmates. Setting aside the various groups of bondmates, the remaining three groups have a particular symmetry. The Old Wardens have one dead (Zachal), The Totems have one dead (Owl), and the New Wardens have one dead (Leonis), I think they are represented by the single vertical line. The is one Antagonist per group Pallis (Old Wardens), Snake (Totems), and Rusol (New Wardens). They are the top line. There is a trio of Old wardens opposing Pallis, which would be Hera, Arodi, and Demea, three Totems with a plan (Fox, Bear, and Raven), and three New Wardens forming friendships (Corec, Yelena, and Hildra). They are the three bottom horizontal lines. The Line intersecting the three of the Bottom is a friendly getting involved in the plan to oppose Pallis. Boreas (based on the visions the Seer had to assist Sarette in becoming a Bondmate), Wolf (awakening and starting to oppose Snake), and I am guessing Badru watching things from his Dream realm since he was suspicious that someone was messing with the warden Spell. The last two lines are Allos and Iris (Old Wardens), Shayleigh and Kono (New Wardens), and Eagle and Deer (Totems). As to how they fit in I don't know since out of that group I am guessing only Deer has put in an appearance, the scene where Shavala saw the Deer who hadn't shed his antlers at the old shrine before Bear arrived.

Brian Woods

I think…Eagle is supposed to be dead, too, out of the Totems, at least by Raven’s reckoning such that it is, and since we haven’t seen him at all save for flashbacks it has more weight. Having said that, the 45 degree line could be an mostly dead Totem, but the stretch seems a bit much.

Jesse

That is quite possible, but Raven told Wolf that Deer was dead as well. That Scene with Shavala at the abandoned shrine may not have been Deer but I thought it was. Shavala has been crossing paths with more than just Wolf. I have been under the assumption that the Totems were mostly regressed with the exception of Owl since it was stated one of the Old Wardens murdered him.

Raman BNV

Wasn't it Hera who killed Owl? That is another question to be answered...

Brian Woods

Yes, Raman, both Wolf after he woke up and Hera during one of her interludes said that she killed Wisdom, though when that happened is up for debate. Presumably, it was either before the ritual when Owl attempted to stop them, hard to imagine of course since he was a deity to Hera’s simple Warden powers, during the ritual while he tried to change what they were doing to prevent another Collision, while the magic was going haywire, or after the ritual when he attempted to reverse whatever they had done and he didn’t know how powerful she had become.

Brian Woods

So, about a week ago I posited a theory that the lines were three separate images rather than one singular picture. However, I deleted it to work the idea more, try and find more story info to support the idea, which gave me time to rethink things and notice others. The number 8 being prevalent, as well as the vertical line being opposite other parallel lines gave me a new branch to pursue. Thusly, I have developed two theories of varying strength to describe the picture, one regarding the Totems and the other related to the new Wardens. First, the less cogent theory about the Totems: using the Totem walk in Tir Yadar as a guide, the lines represent Bear and Stag on top crossing each other, likely due to proximity and Stag’s downward descent towards possible death, Eagle is 3 to the left tilting slightly upwards though I cannot yet determine why, Fox is 4 at the bottom crossing line 7 indicating a convergence to be described later and the same upward tilt as 3, Owl is the vertical line 5 describing his death, 6 is Raven, 7 is Wolf who will probably be meeting with Fox of line 4 at the end of Book Four due to the probability searches he’s currently engaged in, and Snake is line 8 at the bottom. The strength of the theory is based on the Totems lining up numerically using the Walk as a guide, and the fact that Ivy mentioned that they wanted to see if we could guess the concept before the current book’s end. The weakness is…what ties together Bear, Raven, Wolf and Snake in such a way that they are all horizontal parallel lines, and what the upward tilt to Fox and Eagle’s lines mean for the story; I can’t seem to think of anything to define either point. I’ll post my other ‘stronger’ theory later.

Raman BNV

I can't help thinking that the graphic has something to do with the Collision. The totems' role in protecting the collision and in safeguarding the mortal realm comes to mind. I also think the lines represent realms, rather than totems or wardens. Alternatively, the lines could also be the different peoples encountered. Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Chosar, Lizardfolk, Giants, etc?

Brian Woods

So, my second theory…has almost nothing to do with the current storyline regarding Pallisur, Snake, and all the other issues surrounding the main plot. It involves the new Wardens and their purpose for existing, the reason they were chosen and the job of their lives. The four parallel lines, from top to bottom, are Badru, Yelena, Rusol and Corec, and signify them adhering to the true meaning of being a Warden. Though Badru is mad as the March Hare and not all there, by his own statements and Vatarxis’s musings he is defending HIS people, likely other Celestial children, from the demon lords very well. Though Yelena changes cities the way others change hairstyles, her warding magic allows her to, in a similar fashion to Badru, protect the people she identifies with at the moment from both conventional enemies and demons in true Warden fashion. Although Rusol is damaged, slightly deranged, and supremely misguided, his killing of Leonis and general actions against the other Wardens has been self-stated as a way to defend his people, both the world and the kingdom of Larso, from all foes. And Corec, despite not really having a nation to protect, defends each of his bondmates as if they are HIS people, which is the point of the story I suppose ;). The lines on the left are Hildra and Leonis, both off center and tilted upwards. This is an indication that, instead of staying true to the purpose of the Wardens, they have become selfish and insular in their behavior, but in a positive way. Take Hildra for example: she had lived a life as an emperor of sorts, and lived quite like Kono ruling with an iron fist but beneficial to her people. However, eventually she recognized that she was not acting in their interests and destroyed her empire, preferring to advise and not interfere much in the going’s on of the world, thus choosing exile over protection. Leonis, on the other hand, believes is his crazy cause so much he stays well off the path, and yet the upward slope of his line suggests he is still providing a positive impact on the Blue Vale he called home. Quite interesting… Finally, the second downward line intersecting with Badru’s is Kono, indicating a mostly selfish line with negative connotations while still maintaining his main purpose of protecting the Seaborn of his empire. One might argue that he is caught between his delusions of grandeur and his duties to the people, and that is why he is not yet off center like Hildra and Leonis. And line 5, off to the side, is good old Shayliel? I believe her name is, and the vertical nature shows her pure unadulterated selfishness in not adhering to any structure at all. I suspect it even indicates she doesn’t much care for her bondmate’s desires, either, only what they might help provide her with to sail the seven seas. There aren’t really any spoilers associated with this theory, except two that may show up sometime in the future: Badru and Kono’s lines crossing show that they might have interacted at some point in the past, which led to Kono’s current behavior, and Shayliel not really caring about anyone but herself which might be a future story to pursue.

Jesse

You could be on to something with the whole ruling thing. Hera's flashback to Ariadne's ceremonial induction to the Mage Knights showed that none of the Wardens in that time ruled but a mortal king that wasn't even a mage.

Jesse

Okay, I have a new idea. The cover to book five has both Leena and Ariadne on it. The forehead runes/sigils have been displayed on the covers so in theory we should have an idea if Ariadne or Bobo will be the eigth bondmate by the end of the book or when the fifth one begins. This symbol is from Hera bonding either Ariadne or Bobo. Corec's blessing has revealed both as candidates for the last spot he has so a choice has to be made. It won't be Corec's to make but Hera's. She will either claim Ariadne as a bondmate as she considered thousands of years ago or she will take Bobo as a means of watching Corec and Fox.
