Hi, folks. Here is a combined package of the previous two releases, Chapters 16 to 21, all in one file. Ariadne's new scene has now been inserted into Chapter 18 where it belongs. And just to even out the chapter lengths a bit, I bumped Melithar's scene up to Chapter 19.

Also, an update on the next batch of chapters: I'm working on them, but they will most likely take longer than average. Things are getting complicated, and I want to make sure to get it right.

Ivy, given that Corec and his bondmates are still at "Beginner" or "Amateur" status in practicing magic, and that Rusol and his team are slightly better off, (since they were older, have more blessings and have access to spell books), and that the new Gods have had thousands of years to hone their magic... would you foresee an extended period of time before Corec becomes ready to challenge his rivals? I know you've planned for Book 5, but this is looking like going into Book 6 and Book 7 Territory.... Am i wrong?

ivyveritas

I still haven't figured out if I'll need five or six books, but I don't anticipate needing to go beyond six. That should be enough for the story I wanted to tell. Of course, that's just one story in a very large world. I'm trying to sprinkle in hints that while Corec's story is important, it's not the only thing happening.

Brian Woods

Yeah, I’m actually on Raman’s side here, which is to say…who is Corec’s big bad? While I like a good twisting plot line as much as anyone, it doesn’t feel like we know who he’s supposed to actually fight once it’s all said and done. Is it Rusol, so as to kick him from the Larsonian throne and drive him into the wilderness to plot revenge against all the Wardens? Is it Pallisur, and to fulfill Hera’s destiny to stop the new ritual from occurring? Is it Snake, so as to protect Leena and her brother and ensure the Wardens continue on? I at least feel your first section finale isn’t very clearly defined, at least not enough to round out in 30 or 60 chapters without a timeskip to power up with. But then again, if it’s just to set up world building and arrange the table for future installments, this would make much more sense. A nice teaser before tunneling down into a specific storyline in-universe…can’t wait ;).

Norbert Borer

Hello Ivy, I agree that too many books get old and a good story ends before it gets boring. However, I expected that at least Pallisur is stopped merging the 4 types of magic before the storyline ends. It will be quite challenging to put this in the next 2½ books avoiding that we readers get the feeling that the end is forced, which would leave most of us very unsatisfied and frustrated. The alternative is you end it somewhere else but then we readers are left with a lot of open questions and unsolved issues which is also disappointing. I am looking forward seeing how you will solve this problem. By the way, I fully agree that the universe you created has a lot of room for further stories with different characters.

ivyveritas

Hi, Brian and Borer. I do plan for what I hope you'll find to be a satisfying conclusion to The Eighth Warden in itself, and not just as a setup for something else. I don't want to give anything away, but I'll say this: I've deliberately avoided including any bad guys who are evil for the sake of evil (that type of antagonist has always annoyed me). Rusol's misdeeds are very human in nature--we see ourselves in him in one scene, then we're reminded why we hate him in the next. Pallisur, Snake, Vatarxis ... their motives are harder to understand, but that doesn't mean they don't have reasons for what they do. Of course, it also doesn't mean that those motives will be acceptable to the rest of the world. It's like the snow beasts and the dragon, who are simply following their own natural instincts--except Pallisur, Snake, and Vatarxis are thinking beings. (Well, so are the snow beasts technically; they're just not too bright.) Anyway, some things will be obvious, some things might come as a surprise, some things might hint at a broader world to explore. I hope you'll enjoy it!

More questions.... 1) What did Snake do that caused him to not be welcome in Tir Yadar? 2) How come all the old gods are male? 3) Its clear that Rusol is the main pawn in the game, but is Corec going to be a wildcard? 4) Is the armor gifted by Shara to her son, Rusol also a mirrorsteel armor? Since the only other mirrorsteel armors are the ones that Thedan and Ephrenia had, and they were Pallisur's bondmates, is it possible that Rusol is a pawn of Herasis, Vatarxis and Pallisur? 5) Is the ending going to be something like Corec getting control of all the magics and deciding that magic has caused enough trouble and withdrawing all the magics from the world? 6) Travel to the seaborn homeland is a given; but will Corec travel to Cetos and the other continents? 7) How about the sunborn? How would they be connected? Can't wait for all the answers, Ivy....

ivyveritas

4. Just to note, only Thedan was bonded to Pallis. Ephrenia was someone else's bondmate. 6. Some things are beyond the bounds of this story, and are included either to flesh out the world or because certain little details may be helpful later on.

Hello Ivy, inspired by the previous posts from Raman I wrote down my own set of questions. Perhaps one or two can be answered without spoilers in case I missed something. 1) What is Treya’s stigma of a god born which she bears so openly (book 2, ch. 5)? 2) Why was Corec not harmed by the magic beam (book 3, first ambush by snake followers)? The only harm was done by secondary effects like the melting armor and the force of the impact. I am also surprised that none of his companions addressed this later because it cannot be explained with pure luck. 3) What’s the purpose of the enhanced jade bracelet stolen by Leena? So far, I understood she could travel to the ‘totem realm’, but how would she be able to navigate there? 4) Does Ariadne have infrared sight or maybe an elder magic spell to detect body heat in the darkness (addition to book 4, ch. 18)? 5) Why feels Ariadne that her elder magic skills improved even though not being bonded by Corec (addition to book 4, ch. 18)? 6) When does Corec show the first signs of divine and/or elder magic because he is the grandson of the Lady? I know the Lady thinks he did not inherit her capabilities but there is still hope as the warden bond increases his potential and makes it easier to achieve that potential. 7) Leena can transport about 50 pounds for several months now. Should she not already be able to transport people like her fellow travelers. 8) Is it possible that Treya could heal Ellerie’s mother and/or destroy the black magic book? You informed us that it takes longer to finalize the next batch of chapters. Do you have any update about an anticipated release date? Thanks for the great story, I am looking forward to the next chapters.

ivyveritas

Hmm, lots of spoilers in this batch, so I can't really say much, but let's give it a shot: 1. This hasn't been explicitly stated, but it's the fact that Treya is extremely attractive, with startlingly blue eyes. 2. Spoiler. His companions didn't say much because they, and he, assume he learned a new defensive spell. 3. Spoiler. 4. The Chosar have two-step night vision. There's basic low-light vision, and then there's heat vision. 5. She feels her skill with elder magic is improving because she was able to cast two infusions more easily than she used to do a single one. She doesn't know why, though--maybe she just needed to practice more. 6. The warden bond improves the potential of a warden's existing magical source(s), but doesn't add new ones. Moira was supposed to provide her child with arcane and divine magic, not elder magic (up to this point, no one's ever been born with more than two sources of magic). Marten was supposed to provide the child with elder and demonic magic. Combined, the child would have had all four, but thanks to Fox's interference, Marten and Moira never met. The threads of fate are still out there, but when Corec was born with only arcane magic, it delayed The Lady's plan even more. 7. She can transport 50 pounds because that's how much she can carry (she's not physically strong). She could maybe go a bit higher than 50 by carrying something in her arms and something in a backpack, but that's two different things rather than one heavier thing. Transporting a person is a different skill entirely. 8. Spoiler. I will say that no other healer has had any luck.

Next release: I don't have a target date yet, but it should be before the end of the month. I'm about halfway through the first draft, and I'm finally making good progress. It took some time to get the ideas to all fit together well. There are still a couple scenes I haven't quite worked out, but I'm getting closer.

Aspiring Sage

Hello Ivy, Just went back and Re-read books 3 and 4 and more than ever, I feel your writings are criminally under-rated. I feel this series must inevitably break out at some point, and those of us here will be proud to say we were among the first few hundred readers. Meanwhile, can you share your current thoughts on how many more chapters will be included in book 4 and what you estimate the release schedule will be the next 3-4 months?

ivyveritas

There should be two more releases in Book 4. One by the end of this month, and one hopefully by the end of December. It's possible it could go up to three releases, but it'll depend on how many scenes I need to finish out the current story arc. Once Book 4 is done, there'll probably be a short break before I post the first entry for Book 5.

Norbert Borer

Thanks for the comprehensive answers which covered more than I expected. I highly appreciate it.

Spiderfox

With regard to number 6. Isn't his ability to automatically know someone is right for him as a bondmate Devine Magic. It is mentioned that this was the one "blessing" the Lady gave him. Making him an Arcane and very very very minor Devine magic user?

ivyveritas

Regarding Corec's blessing for finding the right bondmates, The Lady mentions that it's not the type of blessing that grants access to divine magic. I haven't really delved into it too much because the mortal characters don't know anything about it, but the gods can grant certain types of blessings (counterparts to demonic curses) that are separate from the blessings of divine magic. Really, they're different things, but they use the word "blessing" for both.

Brian Woods

Yeah, I wouldn’t necessarily call his ‘feelings’ towards finding bondmates Divine Magic usage either, if only because he has no conscience ability to utilize or not utilize the power. Most blessings we’ve seen have an on/off switch, like healing or protection spells, whereas his sixth sense is always active without his control. He just needs to tap into it to see what it says. By the by, the ‘totemic realm’ is also guided by strength of will and thought, so perhaps one wouldn’t need to know ‘where’ to go moreso than ‘who’ to go to, like Hera or Snake. To end, I suspect the answer to your question on WHY Corec survived the beam spell will be answered when he faces the dragon head on ;)! P.S.: I also think your question regarding Warden potential may have less to do with Corec learning elder magic, and more to do with perhaps finding out the true limits of his accidental arcane gifts, though whether Ivy shares that by the end of Book 4 or the beginning of Book 5 will be interesting to watch.

Brian Woods

Also, just a quick question Ivy: given that priests can basically stop demons in their tracks, I would suppose they possess similar spells to inhibit Demonic Magic on the whole. Given that, can a priest or Divine Magic user interfere with a Druid’s ability to communicate with nature, like plants and trees and animals? I might think so, if only because getting nature to do your dirty work might be thought of as unnatural, so to speak. Is it possible?

ivyveritas

No. Divine magic has a sort of natural opposition to demonic magic or necromancy, but not to elder magic or other types of arcane magic. Divine magic can use protection spells against certain types of elder or arcane spells, but it doesn't have the same sort of built-in opposition to their existence.

Brian Woods

Cool, so less a ‘corruption of the natural order’ and more of an opposing elements situation. I just had an odd idea that, given our knowledge of Snake wanting to destroy something and take something from Tir Yadar, he might attempt to send his priest controlled army into Terillia for a chance at commandeering the Staff of Life and his followers would need a way to hamper the tree bond of the druids to win. Perhaps they may have access to poisoning spells to wither away at living things, but this presupposes he would attack in the first place.

Aspiring Sage

Ivy, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving (assuming you are US based). Wanted to check in to see if you have a release update for us.

ivyveritas

Hey, BT--check out my status update post from yesterday for current news.

Aspiring Sage

Hmmmm... it's not showing up for me. The latest post I see is this one from Oct22. Is it on this tab on this site? Maybe it will load for me tomorrow.

ivyveritas

There's a post for Oct 30, and one for Nov 29. You didn't get the e-mail alerts about them? Is your account up-to-date? (Though those two posts are open to the public, so even if your account is out-of-date, you should still be able to see them.)

Aspiring Sage

Thanks. I figured it out. I was in the 'patron only' thread somehow. Which means I couldn't see your public announcement. Resolved now. Thank you for the update and looking forward to the next release.
