Here we go, chapters 22 through 24!

Apologies for the delay, but there are a lot of things happening here, and a lot of storylines coming together, so it was hard to write. As a bonus, this release is about 2400 words longer than a typical release.

Let me know if you have any feedback.

Spiderfox

Dude/ette, don't apologize. Make sure the story is to your standards before releasing. It is most definitely worth waiting for.

Jesse

No Worries on the delay. I had a feeling Rusol would try to bond Razai. Thankfully her Father forced Corec to follow through in High Cove. I wonder if her Father had foreseen this? I wonder if Rusol will learn to curb his impulses before Larso burns?

Aspiring Sage

Ivy, thank you for another fantastic installment. I love how you weave in new characters, even at this late stage, without it seeming forced. It helps that you that you introduced them to us as rumors previously. And so much tension. Will Shavala make it to the crew before the dragon shows up? Will the ambassador be killed by the little princess in rage? How will Rezai kidnapp Yassi and bring her to Corec? ... oops, that's just my fanfic storyline, sorry, carry on...

Raman BNV

Ivy, great set of chapters! As usual, you leave us eagerly waiting for the next set! Shayliel with the memory wiping and mind control magic is indeed very intriguing.. Razai is going to be pursued very hard by Rusol, it looks like...

Raman BNV

Ivy, is the mind control thing that Shayliel and Zora use the same as the Compulsion spells used by Rusol? Is Zora a demon born? The way she comes out of the shadows seems to be something that Razai can do as well... Or is Zora using an arcane spell like a wizard?

Raman BNV

Also, the spell book used by Queen Revana and Princess Vilisa is very interesting.. is it, in fact, the Chosar King's Consort - Gaiana's Spell book, the one that was missing when Corec discovered the Royal Chambers? If that is so, then would the Chosar be able to cast spells from the spell book without being corrupted? And would Ariadne be the perfect user of the spell book, then? The meeting between Corec and Shayliel would be very interesting...

ivyveritas

That's certainly a question, all right. I wonder what the answer will be. Maybe we'll find out ... maybe not :-)

ivyveritas

This one I'll answer: No, it's not Gaiana's spell book. She had more spell books than just the two that Ellerie found, but the others were in Fortress West when it was destroyed. (She worked out of Fortress West along with the other enchanters, shaper wizards, and magical researchers.)

Brian Woods

Raman, I would postulate Zora’s spell casting is closer to Katrin’s magic than Razai’s, therefore more Arcane than Demonic. Consider the following: as a bard, Katrin can instill images into a person’s mind, making them see the picture she wants them to related to the music she sings, while Razai produces illusions that fool the 5 physical senses like sight and sound without an intrusive presence in another’s head. If Zora is a similar bard-like mage, ‘she’ is altering how people around her think they see her (as a shadow in a corner) and how they collate their thoughts (Melithar’s concentration problems). She could even be silencing her singing so no one thinks they hear her, perhaps.

Raman BNV

Great to know, Ivy.. looks like we need to wait a little more time for more secrets to be revealed.. especially about dark magic and the spell book's intended users..

Raman BNV

Good point.. but i was comparing the mind control more with Rusol's compulsion magic... but i get your viewpoint also

Brian Woods

Sooooo…based on the loads of info you dropped in these chapters, my curious mind has three burning questions to pose to you, Ivy. First, given how the dorvasta are original elves gifted with the tree bond from the totems, the nilvasta are elves with some human blood, and the Chosar are human-elf hybrids, is the other half/quarter of the yanvasta one of the known races of the world or one yet to be introduced? Second, now that we know that Razai’s whispers are several in number, separate and distinct from herself and each other, and in possession of magic and knowledge of magic, can we conclude they are spirits of the dead communing with Razai and are probably the reason Vatarxis both spawned her and saved her life as a child? Finally…should we expect the last set of chapters in the middle of January or at the beginning of February ;P? Inquiring minds want to know!

ivyveritas

1. Just to make sure I'm understanding the question correctly, are you asking about the yanvasta bloodline? If so, I'll just say that circumstance may play as big a role as genetics. 2. And regarding the second question, some mysteries may not be explained in full detail ;-) 3. Mid-January is unlikely, but I'd really like to get the next batch out before the end of January. Can't promise that, though.

Brian Woods

Yeah, in a roundabout way I was asking who they did their breeding with to become black haired elves alone on an island. A most curious way to answer the question, regarding circumstance and genetics. That would suggest a big event combined with interspecies relations transformed their people…which perhaps if they live near Pado or Paraido the seaborn island might tell us what happened to them. Curious…

A question regarding the 4 magics, Ivy. Divine magic can be got by being God born (Treya) or by receiving blessings (Bobo), am i right? Demonic magic can only be got by being a Demon Born, is that right? Can someone ascend to the demonic realm like they could ascend to the totemic realm? Elder Magic can or cannot come by genetics. It is more prevalent in Elves, but there are humans also who can practice elder magic, possibly because of intermingling of humans and elves at some point the person's ancestry. So Elder magic is also to some extent, genetic in nature. Arcane magic is more prevalent in humans, but there are elves also who are arcane mages (Ellerie). Arcane magic is said to be native to the mortal realm. Ariadne says at some point that only the Chosar could wield both Arcane and Elder Magic, since they were born out of both humans and elves. Since demons and Gods both started having children with humans (and i suppose, with elves, as well), theoretically, a person could be born with all 4 magics. Is that possible? Or is it necessary to ascend to the totemic realm to wield all four magics? The mortal realm seems to be a laboratory for the gods and the demons to experiment on. At this point, humans (and to some extent, elves) seem to be no more than guinea pigs / puppets.

ivyveritas

Divine magic: Yes, it can be passed down genetically or given as blessings. Demonic magic: Passed down genetically. Note that the old wardens' ritual was intended to grant their people access to all four magics, but it 1) didn't work right (or, at least, it didn't work in the way the people had been told it would work), and 2) something happened that caused the wardens to only receive divine magic, and not any of the others they were missing. Related to that last question, note that the "ascension" wasn't specific to the divine realm, but since it was divine magic they received, they have more power over the divine realm due to its nature. Elder magic: Wolf called elder magic "the magic of the Collision itself". It wasn't known in the mortal realm until he granted its use to the elves via the Staff of Life. Thereafter, it was passed down genetically through the elves. Beyond that, we don't know if it has other mechanisms for appearing in the mortal realm. Arcane magic is native to the mortal realm, and was first mastered by the humans. It can take many forms (as evidenced by Leena and Corec), but the early mages invented wizardry to control it, and that's now the most common usage of it. Humans and elves have been intermingling for a very long time. There's no such thing as a half-elf. One is born as either human or elf (or Chosar, at one time), most commonly matching the mother's side, but those hybrids do take some elements from their other half. That's where the nilvasta come from, and it's why some elves can use arcane magic and why some humans can use elder magic. Ariadne says that some Chosar could wield both arcane and elder magic, but she doesn't know why. She's not aware of the origins of her people. She believes the Chosar came first, or at least were the first to achieve civilization. She has no idea there was an entire empire of humans and elves allied together before her people were created. We don't know what magics the old gods have mastered, but of those born from the mortal realm, Hera was the first to have three magics. She was born with both arcane and elder magic (both are required to become a Mage Knight), and then she received divine magic from the ritual. Rusol is the second we're aware of (and perhaps the second ever), having demonic, elder, and now divine magic. The difference between the two is that Hera is ascended, and can thus combine multiple magics together into the same spell. No one has ever been born with three magics naturally, much less with four ... but the purpose of Hera's plan was to create someone she called the "Master of Four Magics" because she believes that if there's a mortal born with the four magics, it will close off the route Palllisur intends to use to continue his ascension. Of course, Fox ruined her plan, leaving it split in two, with Rusol (born with two of the gifts) and Corec (born with just one, plus the potential in his bloodline of the other). So, she's making the best of her circumstances, trying to cut down on the number of wardens, to slow down Pallisur's ritual until she can get her plan up and running again. She's not so much setting Rusol against them as she is taking advantage of the potential futures she saw for him (and for the Master of Four Magics, if that child had been born). That is, she's not directly interfering by *causing* the conflict between Rusol and the wardens, but she bided her time to create the right child at the right time, and even though that child was never born, those threads of fate are still out there--and are more closely linked to Rusol than to Corec, just because Rusol was the one born in the right time and place.

Brian Woods

I’m not sure I agree with the idea of the mortal realm being a petri dish for higher beings, necessarily. Both Fox and Wolf have suggested that they actually like/love the place because their original realm was devoid of inspiration and stimulating material, just a grey and foggy featureless void. People are interesting, and they wanted to protect them and provide for their sustainable future. Now, maybe the demons and Snake want nothing more than destruction and devastation, but for the most part every celestial being wants the world to keep spinning on.

Brian Woods

Wait…Ivy, are you actually saying Hera is okay with Vatarxis influencing Rusol and Razai to possibly kill Corec so as to prevent Pallis from getting 8 Wardens together to complete his ritual? That…seems a little cold blooded for her grandson through Moira.

ivyveritas

As Vatarxis says, "I doubt Corec is on The Lady's list." Vatarxis is okay with Corec dying if it protects Rusol, since Rusol is the one critical to the plan, but he doubts The Lady wants Corec to die even though he knows she wants to thin the herd a bit. We've seen The Lady attempt to keep Corec out of the whole mess by making him seem unimportant, so it seems like she's trying to protect him, but by keeping quiet about him, she hasn't made her intentions clear to Vatarxis. Vatarxis was actually hoping to make use of Corec himself (he doesn't say how), which is why he sounded ambivalent when he suggested Razai might need to kill him. He'd assumed Corec would be safe from The Lady's machinations, but now he isn't sure because Rusol is the priority if they intend to stick to the plan.

Raman BNV

@ivy Whew! Thanks for the detailed explanation. While there are people with two magics, and Rusol is the only one with 3 magics, it is necessary to ascend to be able to combine the magics. Did not understand this before. Also, i thought that an arcane mage = wizard. Now, i realize that wizardry is only one of the ways of channeling arcane magic. Leena and Corec being Arcane mages, but not wizards makes a whole lot of sense now. We know that Fox can Travel. Travelling is an arcane magic. Wolf has granted Elder Magic through the staff of life to the elves. So The totems are more than just divine magic holders. They can wield at least one other magic, other than divine magic. The totems (minus Snake) + the New Gods + Wardens (Minus Rusol) Vs. Demons + Snake + Rusol... One possibility for the final battle

Raman BNV

Hello Ivy, I was just wondering about the ability of the totems and the new gods to see potential futures... is this a magical ability or is it a consequence of ascending? Even Wolf is mentioned as seeing potential futures and seeing the elves getting destroyed once humans master Arcane magic. So, Wolf creates the staff of life in order to give the Elves Elder Magic.. Humans in the mortal realm have arcane magic (native to the mortal realm). Divine beings in the divine realm have divine magic and Demons in the demonic realm have demonic magic. Is there a separate Elf realm that we are yet to see. Or have elves been transplanted from some other place? Given that elder magic is the magic of the collision itself and not a magic native to any realm, one must think that elves come from some other place and are sharing the mortal realm with humans.

ivyveritas

Seeing potential futures is a divine magic ability ... that may or may not require ascension. Since I'm not sure it'll come up during the story itself, I'll go ahead and answer the elf question. Humans and elves are a case of divergent evolution, similar to how homo sapiens and neanderthals coexisted for a time. Their last common ancestor existed during a heavy ice age when there was a land bridge between Vestath and Cordaea. When the ice melted and the land bridge disappeared, the two groups were isolated from each other. The Cordaean line evolved into elves, while the Vestathi line evolved into humans. If you go further back, snow beasts diverged from a much earlier common ancestor, and then ogres diverged from snow beasts. One of the elven mutations was a very long life, so each individual could learn much over time, but that also meant they had fewer generations, which meant fewer new ideas over time, so they didn't advance quite as fast as humans. That's why it was humans who built the first cross-oceanic ships. As for arcane magic, humans evolved a proficiency for it more so than the other beings of the mortal realm. There are no (recorded) instances of snow beasts or ogres using any sort of magic, and none of our point-of-view characters know whether lizardfolk can use magic. Humans and elves were closely related, and Wolf had a soft spot for the elves, so he didn't want them to be at a disadvantage when faced with humans' greater numbers, (slightly) more advanced tech, and arcane magic. So he gave the elves elder magic, to help balance out the power disparity.

Pat White

Hey Ivy. I have read everything up to Book 4 chapters 16. I love this story. And just joined your membership. Could you make to where I can catch up to the rest. Thank you. And have a Merry Christmas

ivyveritas

Hi, Pat. I think your request might be missing a few words, so I'm not entirely sure what it's asking, but if you're looking for the chapters you haven't read yet, you'll find them in this post (for chapters 22 to 24), and in the post titled "Previous Six Chapters, Revised" from October 22nd (for chapters 16 through 21). Combined, these two posts should get you caught up. And then when Book 4 is complete (which should be "soon"), the $2 patrons will get a compilation with the entire second half of Book 4 (there's no additional content there; just an easier way to collect the files). I hope this helps.

Raman BNV

Thanks Ivy! That explains quite a lot!

Jesse

So someone mentioned Bobo. Now I have been wondering where he is cause I can't remember seeing or hearing from him since the Leatherworker leaving the area mentioned the Dragon. Very Sneaky. Is he still with the group? Or did he go off on an errand like Razai and Shivala and I just missed it/forgot?

ivyveritas

Bobo's with the main group. What's he doing? I guess we'll have to wait and see ;-)
