Hi, folks. I don't know how many of you will be interested in this, but a few people have asked, so here's a breakdown of how the Tir Yadar treasure and income was distributed.

This is basically a cleaned-up copy of my own notes, but everything's preliminary until I do another pass on Book 3 and finalize the timeline and the distances involved.

You don't need this file to understand the story, though it does cover a few minor details that we skip over in the books themselves.

Let me know if you notice any problems.

That's quite an accounting, Ivy! I hope the dragon quest will yield Team Corec a lot more coin...

Norbert Borer

Very detailed account which leaves no questions open. Thank you very much for sharing.

Spiderfox

Very nice information to have about the payouts and the background stuff that you explain.

Aspiring Sage

This is super helpful Ivy. I highly recommend you include a version of this as an appendix to the final book!

Happy New Year Ivy!!! May 2022 bring you continued success and exponential growth in readership!!!

Happy New Year 2022 Ivy! Wishing everyone a wonderful 2022!

Hello Ivy, I wanted to reread the beginning chapters when The Lady teaches Corec about forming a mage light.. so i came across the section where the Lady makes Corec forget about her.. especially reminded me of Zora and her forgetfulness ability... So is it like mind manipulation is also a divine magic ability?

ivyveritas

Some things can be done in multiple ways, and we know The Lady has access to three sources of magic.

Brian Woods

Speculation Time! What do you all think the extra enchantments are on Argyros’s armor and maul? Are they strictly defensive, or half and half with offense? Me, I think his armor is purely a defensive piece all the way. And, if they are enchantments that Hildra didn’t recognize, perhaps they are damage absorption related as opposed to mitigation or prevention focused. For sure, I believe the armor will resist magic to a degree, which I think will protect Corec from dragon fire. What say you all?

Brian Woods

Also, having also done a re-read of the story thus far, I am reminded of the crown/tiara that can see everything in a quarter-mile circle around the user and have to ask: if the artifact can see through solid material to provide a topographical map of the area surrounding the user, can it be used to peer into the damaged parts of Tir Yadar like the caved-in Armory or the R&D division beyond the shaped stone? And the more important question: will it be used for such in a future story?

ivyveritas

It should be able to peer into areas that aren't warded against scrying, but it can't really display anything that's covered up. So it might be able to see beyond a cave-in to the next open area, but it would have trouble displaying much useful detail in the spot that's actually caved in, because it only shows the top layer.

Raman BNV

There is a comment somewhere that the enchantments done by Gaiana on the armor had not been tried anywhere else. So I'm thinking that those enchantments are pretty special as Gaiana was a gifted Enchantress. In addition, since Argyros was not a magic user, I am thinking that some of the enchantments would be to protect against magic (like a divine shield)

Aspiring Sage

HeyIvy, with 2022 getting underway, I wanted to ask how you are coming along with the next set of chapters. Do you feel like we'll get a release in January or is that unlikely?

ivyveritas

I think I can get the next batch out by the end of January, but I can't promise it. I've got a consulting gig starting up this month and I'm not sure how much time I'll need for that.

Raman BNV

Hello Ivy, I'm trying to track the lineage of Corec and his bondmates... and since the genes play such an important role on magical ability, would it be fair to say that all of his bondmates will be descended from a God / Demon Lord? 1) Corec -> Grandson of The Lady 2) Katrin -> Unknown (Possibly Demesis?) 3) Shavala -> Unknown (Possibly Irisis?) 4) Treya -> Daughter of Arodisis 5) Ellerie -> Unknown (Possibly Allosur?) 6) Razai -> Daughter of Vatarxis 7) Sarette -> Unknown (Possibly Borrisur?) 8) Leena -> Unknown (Possibly Pallisur?)

Aspiring Sage

Raman, why would you assume all are descended from Gods? Arcane magic came to humans way before the first demon war and prior to the Chosar nevermind these specific new Gods. And the totems gave the original elves elder magic from the Collision itself. I don't think any of the New Gods can even give any mortal magic except for devine magic. I guess you could make the case that Borrisur passed on his elder magic to the stormrunners only through having lots of children after he created the stormborn. Curious what Ivy will say.

ivyveritas

No, they're not all descended from gods. Remember, the new gods' own (original) magics came from their mortal lives, before they became gods. The ascension ritual only granted divine magic.

Brian Woods

That does beg a small question, Ivy, in regards to the ritual itself: you mention it as an ascension ritual, and it makes me wonder if the ritual itself was supposed to be for ascending and Pallis misinterpreted the design, or if the ritual failed at it’s intended task and a result of that failure was them achieving totemic status? Edit: to make things clearer, if the current crop of Wardens decided to perform the same ritual as before, would they too become Totems or not?

Raman BNV

Also, are Elder Druids better / different than Elder Witches? Ellerie once said to Boktar that Shavala is a druid, and that means something, even in Terevas...

ivyveritas

Druids, elder witches, stormrunners, and Mage Knights all use elder magic, but there are variations within elder magic just like there are variations within the other magics. I don't know that I'd say that any one is "better" than another; they just work in different ways. When Ellerie said that being dorvasta and a druid means something even in Terevas, that's because, in the eyes of the nilvasta, the dorvasta represent the elven ideal--calm, contemplative, and still linked to the tree bond. And the druids represent traditional elven strength, so a dorvasta druid is the pinnacle of the ideal. The nilvasta yearn for what they once were, even as they reject the old ways. They're torn between being true to what they are now vs. wishing they were something else. Hope that helps!

Raman BNV

and because the druids are the pinnacle of the ideal, they are the only ones who can handle the staff of life safely? (as per Irisis)

ivyveritas

Not really, no. Druids can use the Staff of Life because the staff created the druids, so it's most closely aligned to them. As other elder mages diverged from that origin, they would have lost the ability to use the staff safely. Despite what Iris said, Demea would have had better luck than most (given her mastery of plants), but she's not a true druid, so it would have still been very risky.

ivyveritas

Brian, re: your comment from yesterday ... There are some questions I can't answer without spoilers.

Brian Woods

So…somewhat of a random question, and I don’t know if it has been asked before, but how many demon lords exist in their realm? We know of at least 2, and I suspect there are either seven, eight or nine of them, but is it a spoiler to get an answer? And, as a follow up, is Vatarxis the demon lord of Pride or Lies? Both make sense, with Razai’s illusion magic suggesting one and Vatarxis’s attitude towards both Hera and Razai supporting the other.

Aspiring Sage

Hello Ivy, just wanted to check in to see if you have an updated estimated release date for us. This would be the last release for book 4 right?

ivyveritas

I'm still hoping to get these chapters out by the end of the month. There'll be one more release after this one for Book 4. Not sure if it will be a full release on its own, or if I'll have to add the Book 5 prologue to get it large enough to be a release.

Aspiring Sage

For what it's worth, my opinion is to release the remaining book 4 material, even if it's shorter than your usual amount. Then release book 5 material together. Maybe a larger than normal batch if you really want to even out the scales for the smaller last batch for book 4.

ivyveritas

The logic makes sense, but ... I promise 12k words per release (and I aim for a bit above that), so I don't want to put out a release smaller than 12k. The prologue of Book 5 is a flashback, disconnected from the main storyline, so it won't hurt if it's released prior to Chapter 1. But I'm probably worrying over nothing. I always underestimate the number of scenes I'll need to finish off a book. There's a good chance Book 4 will need two full releases to reach the end, but I won't know for sure until I get there.

Raman BNV

Eagerly waiting for the next set of chapters, Ivy.. I can't but speculate on what's next for Team Corec... The Standard Expectation: 1) Defeat / Kill the Dragon 2) Huge Treasure Chest in the Old Keep 3) Team Corec settles down in the Old Keep and use Shaped Stone to fortify everything 4) A lot of people knock on their door and ask Team Corec to keep them safe. 5) Ariadne proceeds west along with Ellerie and Boktar. The rest settle down in the old keep as it keeps growing with people who want Team Corec's protection 6) All the Dukes and King send tribute / Gold to Team Corec for getting rid of the dragon. The Exotic Expectation: 1) Corec Bonds the Dragon and it becomes a powerful eighth member of his team. or 2) The dragon imparts magical knowledge to Team Corec or 3) Shayliel ends up joining Corec as he battles the dragon or 4) Ariadne becomes the new 8th Warden and finds purpose or 5) Corec ends up bonding Ariadne / Bobo or 6) The Old Keep is infested with Snake Worshippers and is a major shrine to Snake. They have found a way to drive the dragon away / Protect themselves from it or 7) Shavala's Staff of Life recognizes dragons as an enemy and generates huge magic to kill it. or 8) Corec's Armor reveals its secret enchantments and protects Corec from a direct fire blast. His hammer provides the death blow to the Dragon or 9) Sarette is able to subdue the dragon with huge blasts of lightning from her new Spear. or 10) Ariadne is able to microport and attack the dragon with her mirrorsteel blade. or 11) Bobo is able to talk to the dragon using Fox's new blessings or 12) Corec kills the dragon and goes west to meet Shayliel and Emperor Kono.

Aspiring Sage

Love your ideas. Some more outlandish than others but very fun speculation!! I am almost looking forward to what happens AFTER they defeat the dragon, but with Ivy's great reputation on writing battle scenes, I am very hopeful for a big treat! So Ivy, can you give us a countdown as to when we might expect the new release?
