Here we go, the next three chapters for Book 5.

I hope you enjoy. Please let me know if you have any feedback.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, this release is longer than normal because it includes Kevik's scene, which you already received in an earlier release. This was one of the scenes that got moved around when I fixed the timeline.

Aspiring Sage

Thanks Ivy, so excited to read these chapters!

Aspiring Sage

Ooooh such a cliff hanger with Shavala. That was mean ivy! And no updates from Rezai! I am getting antsy. Things coming together quickly, I can see a solid time skip coming up.

Jesse

A very good set of chapters. I like the moving of Kevik's trial as it adds more menace with the added villagers arriving before the trial and Sir Barat's warning. I remember Rusol's inner thoughts that Barat would be sent to kill Corec. Be interesting to see who Rusol sends after the Fortress: The Knights, the regular army, or his mercenaries. The Scene with Oracle Galina and Ariadne was really good. I was pleased that she didn't try to BS the Oracle. I also like Sarette giving a formal retelling of the battle with the Dragon. I can see a story about Sarette forming just like the Stormborn Wizard from another Warden that had inspired Sarette. I also like Priest Conley going to the Fortress and continuing to work with the people and with Corec. I think getting a different view of what a Priest of Pallisur could be outside of Larso's church will do him some good. I see Shavala is starting to figure out the Treebond stuff the Staff was showing her but Socks and the Mule showing up to where the Dragon is worrying. But if I am guessing right the Dragon is only the size of a large dog right now correct? I still hope to either see Corec's family's reaction to his defeating the Dragon even if it is just via letters.

ivyveritas

"Large dog" sounds about right for the dragon's current size, yes.

…I do wonder, though, whether Rusol actually CAN send anyone to invade or destroy the Fort. Consider these points: first, if he sent the knight order he might have a mutiny on his hands due to the unfair treatment of Kevin and George going with him and a lack of faith in the monarchy thanks to the Unblessed priests that instigated the situation. Second, if he sends the army he weakens his borders to a possible Blue Vale invasion by Leonis’s remaining army and damages the knights faith in the monarchy over their elite status. Third, if he sends the mercs he again damages the knights faith in his rule and sends relatively undisciplined troops against a Warden holding a fortified position, not unlike the fight in the ruins but with better preparation on Corec’s side. Any way you slice it…Rusol seems boned both logistically and politically.

Nathaniel Wolf

I have to say I'm really enjoying Young Nedley's side story.

Hans Eriksson

Maybe it has been asked before but why not provide .epub format as well? Much easier to read on whatever device.

Jesse

I think Rusol can send any of the three options (if not more) mainly because he is surrounded by magically compelled Yes Men. He doesn't have the temperament or the experience that his Father had to realize he has no good options once he declined to handle the Dragon directly. Rusol has really squandered a lot of his potential regarding his position as Crown Prince/King and as a Warden (Seriously subpar Bondmate choices). I am not sure if he realizes what a time bomb the magically compelled Fort Northwatch is given there are priests of Pallisur in Blue Vale that want him dead and who might have the blessings needed to undo his compulsions. There are times when I want to seriously question what Hera and/or Vartarxis see in Rusol but I have to remind myself that neither of those two cares about Larso or the people living there. The entire kingdom of Larso is just a pawn in their massive multiplayer chess game.

There are a couple reasons. First, every format that I want to maintain requires additional work, and PDF and HTML readers come pre-installed on practically every device. Second, I would prefer that the official ebooks be the only files I distribute in an ebook format, so I don't cause any confusion about what the files are. You are welcome to convert the files to epub for your own personal use (so just don't distribute them to anyone else). I hope that helps!

Brian Woods

Well, I agree with you on Rusol’s supposedly squandered potential, but I would also add he was sort of doomed from the jump: he lacks the constitution necessary for extended physical combat/exertion and possessed the unstable emotions of a demonborn, not good for a ruler who needs to command respect. His education was also lacking in cunning and strategy, both traits required thanks to his alarming weaknesses. He SHOULD be at least as savvy as Martin was for all his magic power, but his brother’s death stunted his growth by clouding Martin’s judgement. Thus, a somewhat irrational ruler consumed by his wife’s disappearance will be unable to cope with the rapidly changing political environment, even with the possible advisement of his ministry. Plus, his forces also have to find his family before they escape the country, further limiting his options. Bad juju there…

Jesse

Yeah he was kinda doomed from the get go. I have to keep reminding myself that the emotional impact of Rickard's death is why Martin and Rusol took the "wardens did it" seriously. I mean killing his brother as a warning to Rusol that puts him in line for the throne and the armies that come with it is kinda of a stupid move, especially for centuries old Mages. Razai looking in from the outside had thought Rusol had done it cause there was no sign of infiltration in the Palace (aside from Razai herself). She just guessed the wrong royal family member as the culprit.

At this point, Snake, Vatarxis, Pallisur and Herasis seem to be vying for influence and control over King Rusol's decision making, army and magical power. He has been seen to have control over 3 magics, so far, that is, Divine (From Snake), Demonic (from his genes) and Elder (from his genes, again). This gives him a unique power (even if he does not realise it yet) over every other warden and even the New Gods. If he were to ascend (in some manner) and get Arcane Magic as well, he may not need any bondmates, army or Larso. Do not forget his magical armor that his mother procured for him. It could be equal to, or better than Corec's Armor. It could take all the other wardens, Old Gods and New Gods together to be able to contain him. He is the pawn in the chess game that every player seems to want. The meeting between the Empress, Yelena and Yassi looks to becoming pivotal for an alliance forming against Rusol.

Jesse

I believe Rusol's armor is a Mirrorsteel suit from the Mage Knights of Tir Yadar, specifically Thedan's. Maybe Ephrenia sent him her suit through an agent at Pallisur's behest but I doubt it. Pallisur really hasn't given Larso the time of day and could have easily disposed of both Martin and Rusol with a few visions to his Blessed Priests exposing the Demonborn in the royal family and robbing Hera of her agent. Pallisur has chosen to turn a blind eye to "his chosen land" (to quote the Sanvari Empress) to focus on his new ritual. Also Gaiana could have made her husband a mirrorsteel armor suit. She had the knowledge of how to do it and was by all accounts an extremely talented Wizard. She chose instead to fashion it out a newer material that only she had access to and only did so twice (that is known of) and both times was for her husband. This was a wife fashioning something to protect her love (before the passion cooled) and I wouldn't want to test it. The Dragon seemed to regret doing so. While it does seem that Vatarxis is somewhat watching over him, Hera is watching, and Snake intervened to save him from Leonis, I don't think any of them actually care about his army, his mercenaries, or the Knights of Pallisur. They all seem to want him to do something about the ritual (or just kill Wardens in Snake's case). I would also point out he doesn't have anyone actively working against him aside from Ephrenia, although you could make a case for his own mother working against him. Well kicking the support structures out from under him. until her death. Almost all of his problems are self made. Even Corec wouldn't be giving him the time of day if he wasn't constantly trying to kill Corec. But his situation is still worse off than when he started the novels.

Brian Woods

So…this begs an interesting question about Rusol’s armor: if we presuppose that it is in fact Mage Knight armor, would we also have to presume it to have a similar binding spell like Corec’s weapons and armor, in that it can only be removed by an accomplished magic user or death of the bearer? If so, then the fact it adjusted to Rusol means Thedan is either dead or removed the binding himself, but also that someone might have purposely sent the things into Rusol’s hands. After all, a magically resistant armor capable of adjusting to the bearer would be a rare and valuable find, enough that even a royal family shouldn’t be able to afford it. Which might mean the merchant Sharra? got it from had no idea of it’s true worth. Food for thought…

Jesse

Ariadne got Hera's armor and sword without Hera dying. We saw that in the book 4 prologue. However, Hildra showed us that it is possible to reset such enchantments later in Book 4. So maybe Hera's armor and sword were reset for Ariadne. Just spent some time looking through the PDFs to find where Sharra gave Rusol the armor. Page 87 in Book 2. Sharra mentions the Armor resizing itself and says the man she bought it from "showed her how it works". Also doesn't seem like Sharra was keeping people from touching it like Hildra did with Corec's new armor. She had it laid out for Rusol to see as opposed to him opening bags or packages for it. The only detail to the armor aside from size/weight was it shone like a mirror.

Raman BNV

I think Ivy has already mentioned somewhere to one of my questions that Rusol's Armor is neither Thedan's nor Ephrania's Armor. But it definitely looks like mirror steel Armor, so maybe the mage knights were not the only people to have mirrorsteel armors. Maybe somebody in the high guard who survived?

ivyveritas

No, I've never said it wasn't Thedan's or Ephrenia's armor ;-)

Jesse

Now you have me wondering if Thedan and sold his suit at the behest of someone (most likely Hera at that point) then set out to Tir Yadar to retrieve a replacement set from one of his fallen former compatriots just to find Corec and company already there.

Aspiring Sage

Hey Ivy. Hope all the life matters are going well. As usual, I wanted to ask how progress is going for the next set of chapters.

ivyveritas

It's going well. I'm hoping to get the next release out before the end of the month. I'll have something else for you to read in a few minutes, though--I rewrote Ariadne's scene from back in Chapter 4, and I'm going to repackage all the existing Book 5 chapters so you can get all the updated content in a single file.
