When getting to know your partner to much goes really wrong. Sette just got monkey pawed really hard just now. Amulet is backfiring baaaad. I'm going to guess that the amulet works on him in the Khert. I can't see Duane saying all that's crazy shit right now to Sette without some influence from it. Also panel 3 into 4 transition is cool as fuck. Creepy but cool.

Basically everything since at least chapter 15 has been in the span of a day, and this is pretty much the first time Duane's gotten to "sleep" on these revelations. This unpacking being an ugly wreck should probably not be a surprise. Sadly his audience for this is a scared kid :(

I really like when the ugly side of self-sacrifice is explored in fiction. You get this from the True Believers who aren't in the cause just to make themselves look good, and boy does Duane qualify. Makes him easy to love in some situations AND THEN THERE'S THIS

Damn if Duane and Sette don't get to me as they tear into each others truths. He's an undead zombie man and she's a questionably immortal lionesque human child and at a glance they're profoundly incompatible in every possible way, but he loves her to an extent I think shocks him and she needs him so desperately there's not really language for it. It's so stupidly brokenly *human* of them.

I'm reminded of Lemuel at the end of the Chapter 16 flashback. Lemuel then and Sette now holding out hope that Duane really is The Person They Need Him to Be, only to be terribly disappointed to learn that he isn't. Hopefully Sette will come through the other side of this revelation in a better state than Lemuel did.

I don't really have much sympathy for the Queen here because hey, you signed up for this. You don't get to complain when you feel bad after seeing the sausage get made in person. How many other schemes that grind people up have the Queen and Alderode done that have their own stories we didn't see? It's just that as always, innocent and good people are in the way and Duane has his own perspective on the trolley problem that HE sees.
