And that is the end of the first part of Unsounded! Our heroes will be okay. The wind may blow, but it's not taking them anywhere if they hang on to each other and keep moving forward. And yes, the Crescians misspelled poor Quigley's wholeass name and lied about his death. Propagandized in life, propagandized beyond. Duane is livid.

Thank you for all your support, patrons. I can't stress enough how much this story belongs to you. It would never have gotten to this point without your patronage. I would never have been able to make this my job and see it through to the end. I know sometimes we can feel like we're throwing our money at real landfill bullshit: merchandise, plastic Hollywood movies, whatever product is streaming this week. But you didn't. For whatever it's worth, you put some money directly into getting a story made. You paid for a few Sette smiles and more than a few dramatic drops of blood. Whatever else might be going on, I want you to feel good about this thing you helped make.

And it doesn't have to end if you're up for a sequel! "The Red Cost" launches January 5th of next year - a bright spot to ease the blow of heading back to school or work after the holidays.

I want to launch with a big drop of a prologue that'll pull you right back into the world. "The Red Cost" is weirder; squirmier. It dives headfirst into concepts that were a bit on the periphery of "Unsounded." Plods. The intricacies of the religions. The mechanics of Alderode. The learning of pymary. It's the story of a shitty little gang called the Tanners, the last days of the Adeliers, a great big revolution, a lion-tailed rogue's search for her destiny, a man's search for his ending, and a lot of people trying to survive a slow collapse they never asked to be a part of.

But while I'm working on it over the next few months I also want to have fun here. So stick around if you want to see concept art, previews of pages, and request doodles and naughty stuff. I ain't going anywhere :)

Monday I'll post info on the next fanworks contest. You'll have a long time to work on this one!

The Kickstarter is heading ever onward. Boy will I bet glad when this is wrapped up and you guys can get your books! Still closing in on the cover upgrade! I think next week I'll also preview some of the bonus comics! I remain so bad at marketing :D

And that's that.. for now. Oof, Matty.

Getting dirt right in her itchy, scritchy hand meat.

Omnithea

Let's fucking GOOOOOOO

Stretch Andrews

Congratulations Ashley, absolutely wild to have been part of this ride for so long. What a story!

Alight

Wait- don’t the spikes in Jivi's mom's braids hurt her? Do they never catch her arms or face? I understand the combative, defensive intent but am curious if they're enchanted at all to prevent incidental injury.

T Bourke

Wow congratulations on seeing book 1 Unsound out to the end! What an accomplishment, it is truely something special. It has been such a part of my routine all these years. I’ve come to love these characters so much. Excited for the Red Cost!

Jeremy Ball

RIP Keegley. FREE DUANE! It must feel weird reaching the end of book one. Amazing feeling getting to the end of such a massive pile of quality, but also weird that... it's done and you don't have to put a page out monday. Congratulations Ashley. Can't wait for book two. By which I mean, of course I can wait. I ain't goin' nowhere. <3

Kay

Nah Ashley, thank you! Your dedication to your craft is a rare and special thing and I'm honored to have been a piece of your patron.

GracieV

What an accomplishment. Thank you for being there with such consistency and meaning throughout a significant portion of my life. Thank you. A toast to you and your artistry!!!!!

metrocube

Ashley, congratulations, and thank you. Can't wait for the Red Cost.

Allie V. Movement

Wow congratulations on a truly epic feat of creation! Your work ethic and dedication to your craft is unmatched! Watching your art evolve has been such a treat. Thank you for sticking with your story and with us audience nerds for so long. I hope patreon long continues to keep you comfy.

Jacob Grayson

Let me just be the first to say how much we love you, Ashley! I've not personally been a Patron for long but it's a donation I make gladly! I started reading back when we were still at the Deadly Nevergreen and I've relished every moment of waiting between pages and the discussion and analysis while we waited. I'm excited to get me some paper books and so so ready for The Red Cost!

viisitingfan

I am ALWAYS down for some naughty stuff, as it helps me cope with all the Darkness. Very excited for the sequel!!! I'm incredibly interested in the mechanics of Alderode.

jaaama

You did it! You finished a whole ass book! A webcomic story finished!! Thats so amazing! Congratulations and congratulations again! I know I joined patreon late, but I have lurked for so long I don't even remember when I started to read, and I'll stick along for the next story, as long as this crumbling body and economy and society lets me.

Simon

Thank you and congratulations Ashley! A new page of Unsounded has so often been the highlight of a day for me. Incredibly excited for The Red Cost next year but enjoy some time off too!

forlornfoe

Awesome story for these times of entertainment's decline, thank you for the epic journey. While watching what atrocities have recently befallen the Witcher, Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings and many other great stories - The Unsounded has been one of the rare bright embers amongst the ashes.

Rifter

Thank you so much for the gift you have given over these many years, Ashley. It's been an amazing adventure to follow since my sister introduced it to me nearly 15 years ago! So freakin excited for the continuation!

Quinton

Wow it's been quite a ride! Excited to see where things go next. Looking forward to doing a reread of the entirety of part one between now and then.

astine

So many complicated feelings. Unsounded is probably my favorite thing on the internet so I'm not sad and gratified to see it wrap up. Excited to see the next chapter though

Mister Scarecrow

It's been a pleasure and an honor to have spent the last 12 years following this masterpiece. Can't wait til January!

CD

Man! What a journey. My obligatory reminiscence is I think I started reading... around the time Sette was infiltrating Ulestry? And it's been my favourite story to keep in my back pocket ever since. With so much story still to go this feels more of a breather at the top of the coaster than getting off the ride, and I'm so excited for everything to come! My only regret is not noticing the Patreon sooner. It's been delightful to get all these extra insights (plus you deserve the dosh). For now, so long and thanks for all the fish - I mean, squish ❤️

Capsandnumbers

Bravo! Such a cool ending, "I'm too busy" is my favourite Setteism

Renee

Take all the time you need, and thanks so much for your dedication to this story. Been following it for a long time now, it’s surreal to see it finished

SET

put me in the screencap

Beth Yahne

God those kids, I love them. What a nice lil ending; I'm glad Matty's got his friends

Jerry C

What an absolute triumph. Congratulations and thank you for the ride! I'm very excited for THE RED COST and can't wait to see what weirdness is in store!

D. Alfonso

I have reread this story countless times; there’s so much depth and detail that there’s always something new to be loved. Thank you so much Ashley, I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of work and time that went into this story. And I can’t wait to own the fully printed version. 🙏

Duke BG

A webcomic, completed! You don't get that often. Well done. I hope you let yourself have an actual vacation before the new one, though.

jumanji-mongie

I’ve followed Unsounded through my college studies, marriage and births of my children. My sincerest thanks and congratulations for your incredible story and accomplishment. Can’t wait to see what comes next! (That art for the Red Cost looks awesome! I especially love how Sette and Mikaila turned out.)

The Clag

Thank You, for sharing your strange, silly, wacky heart with us these 12 years Ashley. My 5 years on this patreon have been worth every moment and I only wish I started sooner. Enjoy a very well deserved break, we'll be here chomping at the bit for whatever comes next. Looking forward to the sequel of your favorite story is a rare luxury now days, I have no doubts The Red Cost will be another masterpiece.

Plucky Pariah

I may not have been here at the beginning, but I feel so blessed to be here at the end! Thank you Ashley! Now off to drink myself into hibernation till January~

acloudwithfeet

Been reading since my Middle School days (2012), which is insane to think about. Here's to many more years.

Wambling Wombat

Best combination of world building, story telling, and compelling characters. Bravo and encore! Encore!

Rob N

And just like that, it's done! Wow - congratulations for finishing this beast of a comic! I have been reading along for more than ten years and I'm proud of having been able to contribute a little bit to this getting finished. Enjoy the break (and take an actual break too!) and we'll all be waiting on Jan. 5th for the first update of The Red Cost to drop as punctually as always ;) Until then I'll have so many questions to roll around in my head (all of them spoiler-ish, so not sure if you can answer them): Looks like Nora "Erm" Pris will be the first villain that Sette's gang will have to confront, because she seems to be the one keeping Duane captive? Wasn't expecting that, I wonder if they can do it on their own or if they need help (but from who? Bastion?)? When will Jivi's mom finally make a (non-dream) appearance? And who in all the gods' name is that red guy (seems to be a guy) in the preview picture? You mentioned a lady whatsername, leader of the resistance, but that doesn't look like a lady to me (then again, what do I know about Copper fashion?).

Flyfly

Don't get to see webcomics end too often! An impressive achievement. T'was a good ride! Nothing like it. I will have to do a proper re-read now, to truly collect my thoughts. I can tell you at the very least that Unsounded is a work worthy of critique. I was actually suspecting getting a glimpse of Duane as a final zinger or something. Out of curiosity, what motivated you making epilogue free of him? One of the two main leads, after all.

Spider

Book one has been a wild ride! Thank you for your consistency and dedication to seeing your vision through til the end, Ashley! Time again again for hiatus.

Walker

It's insane to think that I started reading this a decade ago, back in high school. One of the only stories I've been determined to keep up with, and if it takes another decade to write the sequel then I'll be here for that whole decade through! Your work is truly incredible, hands down my favorite comic I've ever read. Thank you for all your hard work, Ashley!

Bastermuilder

Thank you so much for your work, Ashley! Over the past twelve years, reading the new page thrice a week has become a deeply engrained routine, and I'm glad that it isn't going to stop (only pausing). Enjoy the break! We'll wait for you return o7 Regarding the Update: Is Quigley actually pronounced Keeg-ley, or Quick-ley?

Canaureus

What an incredible first book, I've been following this since I was in school and I'm so excited to see what's coming in January. Unsounded has become one of my favorite pieces of media and I appreciate you and your work!

Reed Copperstrand

Thank you, Ashley! I have been with Unsounded since chapter 2 and there was no comic nor fandom in general I followed so consistently for such a long time. I enjoyed the journey very much. You never disappointed. I feel proud that, via cameo, I shaped the story a tiny little bit. <3 Fortunately, it doesn't feel like an end really, just a longer break. I'm hyped for the sequel!

Malik M.L. Williams

Ashley, nothing I can say will be profound enough to adequately reflect my feelings about the stellar quality of your work and the nigh-unparalleled accomplishment of seeing this through. I am so glad to have jumped on this ride so long ago, I don’t even remember how I found it. Unsounded is forever in my head, and I thank you for that. Kudos. And get some rest!

Cherenkov

Congratulations Ashley! A satisfying end to an amazing work. I don’t think I could name another comic creator who equals you in combined skill at writing and illustration, and I’m deeply grateful that you’ve shared this amazing work with the world for free - not even running ads on the comic pages! It has been my pleasure and privilege to support you as a patron, and I’m looking forward to The Red Cost! But I certainly hope you take at least a little time off to celebrate your accomplishment.

Cherenkov

That teaser page for The Red Cost would make a cool poster! I’ve seen some folks on the Discord saying the same thing. Have you considered selling a print-ready version (CMYK, print resolution, with bleed region) of it as a PDF through GumRoad or similar? Shipping is just getting unreasonable these days.

Benjamin

I started reading Unsounded exactly a decade ago, around the same time I first moved away from home to study. In the years that followed, this comic would come to be a treasured source of enjoyment and escapism. I want to thank you Ashley, for all of the hard work and dedication that undoubtedly went into making it hoppen. Reading Unsounded has not only been a joy, it has also helped introduce me to a lot of very nice and funny people on the internet, and has given me many opportunities to discuss subjects and interests I don’t often get to talk about in real life. All of that truly means a lot. I can’t help but find it sort of profound, that as the first part of this story comes to a close, so am I myself closing the door on a rollercoaster of a decade. As I’m wiriting this, I am packing my things to move to a new city and start a new chapter of my own life. I’m looking forward to go, just like I’m looking forward to be accompanied by all of your wonderful characters once again.

Cherenkov

I’ve really appreciated seeing everyone’s comments on this update. It’s good to see how much Unsounded has affected people, and I think it’s lovely to commemorate this moment.

Khyrberos

Thank you for a fantastic story, Ms. Cope. Endings put one in mind of beginnings, and I reflect on the fact that I started reading about ~2014, during my gov't internship, when I was 24 & newly-married (probably should've spent less time on Unsounded & more on the internship, tbh... 😅 ). Pretty sure it was mid-Ch10, right as the Nevergreen Nonsense was about to pop. Over a decade of hanging about this webcomic (& I thought I was a late-comer! lol) I was already an adult when I started, but I went from having one kid to having two, ages 9 & 10, been through 2 jobs, have been married for ~13 years, am now 35... Whatta ride. What an incredible ride. It's kinda uncanny that it's over (at least this Book). But thank you for making it happen.

steven kiland

Glad I was able to come along for the journey, what a ride. I discovered Unsounded ten years ago and jumped on the patreon train soon after and so glad I did. I thought Unsounded would be done for good, but i'm hyped as hell for it to continue. Here's to another ten years!

Deorwine

Thanks for the ride, Ashely. :)

Ellie

Congratulations! Excited to see the sequel will be starting so soon.

AlisterTX

Holy shit HOLY SHIT it's really true?! It's finished?!?! I picked up from the Kickstarter campaign that it was in the home stretch but didn't realize the story was that close to completetion. Omfg well congrats first of all, second of all I have been absolutely FIENDING for this moment. I found Unsounded when it was on chapter four. I decided after chapter eleven that I was going to wait for the story to be finished before reading. I've managed to abstain from probably 95% of spoilers by refusing temptation to look at the Patreon emails for years, until this one. The time has fucking come.

Stillpoint

I liked some of these jpg's you put on the internet.

Nikaleles

Man... fifteen years. You really for real did it, Cope. I know you often profess to being a huge hack whose work sucks but nothing could be further from the truth. I really just don't know of another fiction lately that has been quite this well-thought-out and compelling, which so effortlessly balances humour and horror. It seems there are so few stories in media today which are as obviously loved by their creator, so few characters that feel as alive. How many times I have watched or read something and just felt like "well, it's no Unsounded." I despise a kiss-ass so I don't say any of this lightly: Your work is a diamond among the landfill bullshit and I'll die bloody and screaming on that hill. It is my single topmost fiction and nothing else comes close for me. Unsounded has been a constant in my life since my stumbling across it in 2011 and it's gotten me through some real tough shit lately. When I didn't really have anything else good to hang on to, I had to get through it anyway because I NEEDED to know what the hell was up with Sette and Sessine and the khert and all that. Watching the story grow for a decade and a half is definitely up there in the fulfilling parts of my life. Makes me emotional to see it all wrapped up. I'm also very glad to hear that the sequel will be "weirder" because honest to god my greatest fear was that TRC was going to be normal. Anyway I'm going to go get started on my massive celebratory painting and thank god it's going to be multiple months break. Also need to prepare for the Great Reread. And please rest a bit ffs you deserve some vacation 💙 P.S. if you ever sell Unsounded posters oh lord

Libby Goldberg

I’ve been reading Unsounded since 2012. I’m so glad to be here reading the end now and I look forward to the sequel! Love the three kids so much. I’m glad they have each other to lean on ❤️

Romv

Congratulations, Ashley! Finishing an entire webcomic is an amazing and rare feat, especially for one person. And what a comic it is! Amazing art (often not constrained by the traditional comic page), the most realistically flawed characters I think I've ever read, and a fascinating, well planned plot with plenty of mysteries (and actual answers!) make it the best webcomic on the internet. There are scenes and dialogue in Unsounded that linger in my thoughts years after you drew them. I started reading when Sette first fell into the Khert, I don't even remember how many years ago that was. Since then checking the newest page has been basically the first thing I do on update days. So thank you for those years worth of fascinating art. I'm glad to be able to contribute as a patron, and I hope at least some of that contribution has gone to delicious pie. I'll be eagerly (but patiently) anticipating The Red Cost.

MsRumpole

Absolute masterpiece. Can't wait for the sequel.

Viol

The end of an era, and the beginning of a new one. Congrats on an amazing feat! Now I can tell my binge-read only friends it's over so they can finally catch up and I can gush about the ending to them : D

Dr.S.Shenanigans

Well that feels like a good wrap as I've seen in many a book. It was more or less what you promised, many stories are done, and there still seems much left unresolved--but something one can put off to a metaphorical tomorrow. Wish I could see what's happening to Duane, but it feels like it would work well as an introduction to him in the next book. Love the art for the squeal, but am a bit unsure about the name. Something about 'The Red Cost' seems a little too generic for the world you have built. I see a bit of the symbolism, but care to expand more on what went into the name?

Sara McCardle-Blunk

I won't say how long I've been reading Unsounded because probably neither of us wants to acknowledge that much time has passed, but since I started this has been the comic I've always looked forward to the most, the one I really missed during hiatuses, the one that really hit me in the feels so, so many times. I was genuinely despondent when Sette was definitely, 100% dead, and overjoyed when she came back. I lover her and Duane and their weird friendship. Seeing the success of the Kickstarter, I am so pleased with myself that I've been here for so long. Supporting this comic has been a treat. I am absolutely looking forward to more once the sequel begins, and don't worry, I am patient and you should take all the time you need to make sure it's ready to go.

Sara McCardle-Blunk

ALSO I am pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I gotta ask for peace of mind-- Chitz is completely deactivated and Matty can't get any input from it now, right? It's not hanging out in a grave sending info to Matty, right??? I really don't think so but I'd like to be sure.

The Masked Wallaby

What a journey. Thank you for taking us along for the ride, Ashley. Your ability to produce so much content in so little time is astounding, and the fact that you do this for a living is inspiring for us art hobbyists.

Fitzy

Congrats on the book, yo. I've been reading Unsounded for almost a decade at this point and it's wild to see it wrap up. 1st book was a wild ride and I'm so looking forward to the second!

HandsomePenguin

I do not know what to say. I've been following Unsounded for as long as I can remember, and I am just awash in many different emotions right now. What a wonderful ride. And I am happy to see that it wont be long until the next ride starts. Now, to finally re read the ENTIRE series front to back. I am very much looking forward to what is in store.

Stephanie Aldrich

I've loved every second of this ride, and I'm beyond stoked for the next book!

Rainwalker

Wow! Feels like the end of an era. I'll join in the chorus- thank you so much for guiding us along the highs and lows of this incredible story! I've been following for just about a decade now; it's been a constant bright spot in my weeks as I finished my schooling, got different jobs, and moved to different places. I love "We're too busy" as a final line, Sette's grown so much <3 I'll try to keep busy too. And the first thing to keep myself busy with... a reread!

Gally

"d a lot of people trying to survive a slow collapse they never asked to be a part of." Well. they say write what you know...! What a great ending, IMO you pulled it off, if this was the end end i'd be content. BUT I LOVE THAT WE WILL HAVE MORE!!!

Cassie

[walks in three days late with Starbucks] Man, my weekend was so busy that I didn't have the time nor the mental fortitude to properly read the update and absorb that this is It. What a journey this has been. Never did I think that way back in May of 2013, when my friend slid the first panel of Lem in Chapter 7 under my nose, that this comic would have such a profound impact on my life. Not only have the characters become amongst my most beloved ever, but the narrative and the stories and struggles of these characters became something that I structured my weeks around. I so loved the story you were telling us, loved the characters you were depicting, that Sunday night, Tuesday night, and Thursday night became "Update days," and I would eagerly await that 11:30 - midnight timeframe. I've also met the most amazing people through this comic and made such wonderful friends. That in itself is something I never expected to come of this journey. Unsounded has been my favorite piece of media for thirteen years now, and will remain so as The Red Cost sneaks in there to join it in that top spot (it's Alderode time, baby!!!!!) Thank you so much for Unsounded, Ashley. Thank you for sharing it with us and for putting up with my nonsense specifically. You're a real one. No one's doing it like you these days ❤️ Anyway, I gotta try to shake some words out of my brain for the fanworks contest now. Here's hoping I remember how writing works. P.S.: GOD THAT PROMO ART!!! LOOK AT MY STEP-DAUGHTER!!!! SHE LOOKS POSITIVELY SAVAGE!!!!!!!

redink

i was away from the internet for a while for work.. only to find unsounded has "ended". oh man.. where to start.. its kind of hard to put into words. this comic captured my heart when i first read it. the writing was amazing, the setting was cool, and the characters were outstanding. Sette and the gang always put a smile on my face with their shenanigans and made me fear in horror when they had to deal with dark dark themes. it was just a blast to read it inspired me to start my own gang of characters which made me pick up the pencil and draw again. Ashley, you made one hell of a comic and thank you soo much for this. and i can't wait to see more of unsounded! :'))))) its funny.. all those years ago.. back on DA.. i think it was mid 2000s, i saw your stuff on a daily-deviations.. sette on a chair.. LOL never thought i would enjoy her comic so much

Alight

.. Does Sette’s hair flow into blondie over there? [Narrows eyes.]

Wow, it is finished. And it's so easy to tell that you've had the plot from the beginning - all the pieces clicking together at the end is very satisfying. You know, this is why I kept being a patron even though I didn't read the comic for years; I knew I wanted to come back, and I trusted that you would keep working and do it well. This is a great story, with beautiful art, and you should be very proud of the all the work you've put in. Weeeeell, now I really should go right back to the beginning and read it all again. Because there are a ton if things that are re-framed by the latter chapters. And I probably will do just that, but first I must get up to the current page! Actually, first I must go to bed. I stayed up reading the end of ch 18 and the epilogue because I just couldn't stop! :) Thanks
