Her Majesty is a smart lady and too old to be surprised by much anymore, but I think she had some hope she'd meet this man Toma spoke so promisingly of, and he'd be another Roger Foi-Hellick. But no. Not even another Quigley.

Not another Roger, no, but I doubt she's had anything near this honest of a conversation since her sister died.

Madison

Her expression in panel 9 reminds me of Siya- “You’d be so common, then.”

corvicore

aha, we serve rooibos tea at my cafe. still no idea how to pronounce it

Ashley

Same vibe :/ Such a disappointment.

Ashley

It's her Majesty's favourite.

Fitzy

I mean... he's being honest. He straight-up admits it's good that he's pinned down, here

Rainwalker

I have nothing to say except that I am very much enjoying Duane’s tea time with Sonorie :3

jaaama

Jivi looking at Duane like >:<

Fitzy

Also appreciate the exchange of "Would you like tea?" "IDK you got something harder?"

Natalie

love Jivi's expression. come on Duane, not in front of the QUEEN, you're embarrassing him. he has to associate with you and you've managed to disappoint the Queen of Cresce in the space of two panels.

Sloof

It's pronounced 'Roy Boss'. It's Afrikaans for 'red bush'.

Suppy

Fucks sake Duane, show some class, in the company of ladies and pink Bastion it'd be more fitting to ask for something fruitier, like a pina colada, or at LEAST a screwdriver. How uncouth.

Josh

Yeah, my impression is that he said that thing about biting throats as a bit of self-recrimination or contempt for his nighttime state, which she's interpreting as a threat... when it was more an honest assessment. Though perhaps a twinge of nationalistic hostility made him phrase it in such a way.

Kathleen Smith

Does he mean he would specifically attack her, the Queen, or would he attack anyone if he were free? Is this a hunger thing or a weird patriotism thing, since he knows now that she was not involved in his death?

Josh

Well, sorry Queen, but *no one's* gonna be a new Roger Foi-Hellick, poor Mallory had to wait centuries for a man that idealistic, brave and charismatic to come along. The thought of "you ain't even Quigley" is interesting to me because it reminds me of when a supervisor observed of me "you aren’t flashy, so you're not good at interviews, but anyone who actually works with you for a while realizes you're really solid" (very frustrating, but I digress.) Similar thing: Toma had to fight alongside Duane for some time and they had to open up a bit before they started to understand, trust and like each other. Too-pure-for-this-wicked-world Roger and fully-justified-mega-cynic Quigley had things the Queen could use, and while unfortunately for her Duane is too opposed to Crescian ideals to work together, if they could somehow talk honestly or fall into the Khert together they might at least see that they have a lot in common in being fundamentally decent people pressured to act against their nature by the shape of the institutions they found themselves in. It's a right tragedy, really.

Josh

I think it's more "my zombo self would attack anyone" but he phrased it aggressively as sort of a warning-shot rejecting the friendliness of offering tea.

Lulululu

I think that now, having been tormented and imprisoned and surrounded by people who openly consider Alds to not be human, he would absolutely kill her if he had the chance. Nothing fires people up about their worst beliefs like being hemmed in and attacked by their enemies.

Reed Copperstrand

I think he really means specifically the Queen. He still hates her - not personally, but for what she represents. Even if she was not involved in his death specifically, she is the head of Cresce and he would feel obligated to attack her. He can control the hunger at daytime.

fdsddfsa

I kinda hate that I can't stop loving her tbh; if one was forced to choose a monarch, her personality, ethics, and morals would be very acceptable. If this was a novel I'd be begging for a Sonorie POV chapter. I appreciate her so much for her...empathy, understanding, understanding? The obvious realization that nationalism normally obscures: he is a terribly desperate man in a religious crisis who wanted so badly to save *a* daughter, who found companionship in Toma. I know she's a whole lot more than that but, well; I'd vote for her, for whatever that's worth. Two semicolons and a colon in five sentences is a dire omen!

Mr. Pak E. Derm

Sette... is that you watching from the darkness? Stop being so creepy o_o

McCord Hall

"her...empathy, understanding, understanding?" I'm guessing you didn't mean to write understanding here twice in a row, and curious what you actually meant to say

McCord Hall

Good eye! I swear I never notice these things until someone points them out, hungry as I am for the dialogue

McCord Hall

Last panel, just behind Pink Bastion

Ashley

Duane hated Cresce and its Queen long before he was killed in an alley. So he'll never treat this woman with any particular warmth. Now his ire is tinged with cannibalistic bloodlust and he'll gladly tell her all about that.

SET

Cool i lost my comment cause im phone posting GREAT. Truncated rant: miki is a heretic Duane needs to be less npc i remain measuredly optimistic

Khyrberos

she's just really understanding. ; )

Spider

I think perhaps she's caught him at a bit of a bad time. He might've been more amenable to her prior to the untold weeks of torture (both physical and psychological) inflicted on him in her name. Or maybe he'd fall into the same jingoism trap as always!
