Duane and her Majesty's conversation juxtaposes nicely against what's happening in Durlyne, right down to the wide-eyed idealist who let too much of her good sense fall out today.

What do you reckon the new development is in the Queen's scheme? Nora is certainly referencing their work with Foi-Hellick in the first panel, put on hold since his soul got swallowed up. Maybe Cresce has restored its relationship with what remains of the Black Tongues? She and Ruck sure didn't last part on great terms though...

As terrifying as Ruck is on an individual level, one Senet beast, against the resources of a mechanized, industrialized empire is not much. I doubt it's the case, but it also would not surprise me to find out that our man Duane is not the only beast open on a slab, at the pleasure of Queen Sonorie.

Makes sense. It's the reason there's always been such a focus on fighting against Cresce and it also explains why the Soud weren't just driven out of the country or killed off a long time ago.

Perhaps, but we know from the last book that Sonorie doesn't wanna "clean house." Not a fan of genocide or mass slaughter up north. The ogres may have another purpose.

do we really think the Crescian state is taking down the names of each prisoner of war they're taking to torture ? seems unlikely.

I think the ogres are more about sneaking rebel Alds around Alderode, safely shielded from the dammakhert and the state wizards. They also have an arm spike, which might be for injecting code into khert hubs.

Aww Sonorie! Your work with her is very impressive, she has quite a subtle arc really but you've made it very clear. I think something's happened with/at/because of the Grenzlan khert hub that needs attention. What they did had an effect, whether or not it was the one they intended. Or they might have some Secret Keeper code to interpret.

Unlikely theory: Bastion was so bothered by the Etalarche curse's effect on his self preservation skills that he's handed over the map of the soul to Cresce. Even less likely: Baskest Paulalils has Bastion's soul map knowledge and Darkest's desire to hand it to the Queen.

Is Duane’s remark (“Eyes can be so wide”) about the queen, or her loyalists/supporters? (‘Everything slips out of them’ initially made me think he meant secrets, but I guess it can also mean ‘good sense’ or ‘general intelligence’.)

He's agreeing with her Majesty's statement that idealists forget what are, in her mind, important truths about human nature. But he's surely also thinking about his own past naivete. As readers with a wider view, you can of course also think of what Mikaila just attempted, or Roger's rebellion, or even Vienne's efforts with Uaid. We've seen a lot of wide-eyed idealists get trounced in this world.

Also the Lion nearest Duane's head in panel 6 has me researching professional wrestling throws. I think that move would classify broadly as a facebuster, but I don't know which kind. It's surprisingly hard to take the Wikipedia descriptions and visualize them in my head!
