Five pages today. I've uploaded the typical highres print versions for ya but I much prefer the layout on the website. The long sink into blackness as Duane resigns himself to Hell. Update starts here - https://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch16/ch16_89.html

I promise things start looking up after this. Duane needed a foothold at the very bottom of his soul from which to kick himself back towards the light.

Stretch Andrews

This is some heavy stuff Ashley. Terrible, not quite cathartic, not yet, but Duane finally realizing what he's done, and the Good Man he has let fall by the wayside on his quest to Matter. I very much look forward to where he goes next.

The façade of righteousness has crumbled away

Fitzy

Hey. Hey Glass. Your comic is super good

Velasco

Jon as well, and Cara. Duane walking across the bodies of all he thinks he failed. This was such a powerful scene.

BizzAnon

You know, more than once during the Litriya arc I wondered how you were going to pull off a cathartic moment with Duane after making him so utterly godawful for the duration, and I have to say, bravo. This is character work threaded perfectly through a needle's eye.

Humming-fly

Oof that last panel hits hardest despite being sweet, there's such a bitter finality to it that somehow hurts harder the longer I look at it. Also it looks like there's a slight echo on the typing of the word "Conclude" on the first text box of the last panel of page 4, but I take it that's just from the slight dialogue change for the web page - always fun to see the minor text edits! Your prose is always so poignant it's fun to see it develop sometimes

Dylan

Okay, I'm crying... The "We've won" line really got me! Also seeing the ghosts he leaves behind. I'm really looking forward to Duane's continued character development after this.

Jeremy Ball

That bloody owl must have tasted awful to break into his deepest torment like that.

The Apprentice

Well wow. Is Duane viewing himself as hollow as the shrine twins him grappling with the best thing for him to do is to die? And it looks like "Feel we should clean up" swaddy from 16_30 wasn't the survivor...

T

I feel this lesson could very well be of use to some people of our world.

Reed Copperstrand

This was really powerful. And yes, the long decent on the webpage is fantastic. But it's also really interesting to see the same panels arranged in the conventional format. It gives quite a different impression - the darkness and emptiness is missing - but it's still good.

Noxae

Incredible set of pages! Duane's descent into darkness is both very grim and very satisfying. Also I love the fact that Duane's pymary was blue when looking around at all the corpses and destruction, and then the blue ghost of Mikaila appeared.

Colin Suess

Bless you for that last frame, I needed it so badly by the time I got there. I agree that the web layout has a much better impact.

Winters King

Yeah Duane has really fucked up lately. Rather than preach the sermons of Ssael, and try and win the shrines twins with words and good meaning, he used threats and spat on them rather than give them the pity they deserved for their fate. With Sette, once they had come to an accord, Duane decided that he couldn't really play the role of a father figure, and so settled into just being Sette's friend... Which would be fine, except for the fact that Sette is a child, whose actual dad is a terrible crime boss who literarily sold her. As this page notes, the girl needs real, unconditional familial love in her life. She's starving for it in fact, as is pretty easy to see every time she talks to the man. Duane was in a position to give her that... But again, as this page notes, She wasnt "his" so he didnt give her that. He failed as a Battle commander, by making several MASSIVE critical error in judgement due to his hatred of Cresce. He let the Teenagers run off with the scroll withouth even bothering to learn what it was, he let the raiding team inside because they were his country men and didnt want to accept that they were here to loot and rape and so he let them pass after a scolding rather than giving them a beatdown. I could go on, but this page really sums it all up, alongside the fact that he still isnt able to accept that his little baby brother has grown up to be as big a monster as the rest of the invaders.

Chase

Amazing pages, this entire chapter has been heartbreaking in all the most impressive ways

redink

you spoil us with all these pages! even these pages have been flaying my heart.

I just want to call out that the expression on the mask has been pitch perfect since it showed up. I love it in general, but you nailed it so well. I don’t think you’ve been changing it at all. How did you design the mask? Also, him coming in with the lions remains one of my favorite panels in Unsounded.

Malik M.L. Williams

Truly stunning. Even more so on the website version. I consume a lot of graphic storytelling online. A lot. You do realize that even the people who do what you do can’t do what you do, right?

callonpatreon

I agree with you on preferring the website version. Perhaps you could try making the last panel of page 3 here just its own page? That would replicate the sinking blackness effect somewhat, at least in that specific instance.

Sharpeslass

I got caught up on the website, but wanted to comment on this section. Such a long awaited reevaluation for Duane, and lovely writing. "God is unattainable by transaction ... and are richer for it." If you started a religion with this as its only tenet, I think I'd sign up. You made me cry. Again.
