The script called for a full frontal shot in the eighth panel - I really wanted to rub the reader's face in it - but I'm always worried about getting in trouble with Paypal and Patreon, so I couldn't do it.

Little things to notice: The tree with the ropes and bloody gashes. Mikaila's carefully averted gaze (rather like Ufal's carefully averted gaze in the last scene). The lack of eyes on the soldiers at the end. Mikaila knows she isn't safe here, and she should have kept up with Mason.

I noticed the lack of eyes. Lack of safety and a lack of humanity- it's hard to see these people as anything but rather monstrous. Look at that guy leering in the last panel, eesh... Also, I would argue that panel 8 is a lot more horrifying with that implication with the bloody semen. Also noticed that tree... Gosh. This page is a tough one.

This is a rough one. It's accurate. It's ugly. It's going to make a lot of people unhappy. I specifically remember the issues raised about the shrine scene. So I'm going to take my chance here to voice the opinions I had reading the reactions to that "controversy." This is a serious topic handled in a serious way. It is upsetting and shocking and it should be. There will be people who disagree with any portrayal of rape as and label it as gratuitous, unnecessary or both. Certain people will even incorrectly or disingenuously conflate any realistic portrayal of rape as fetishization. I solidly disagree with the former and the latter is not applicable here by any charitable metric. This is rape as it should be portrayed if it is to be portrayed at all. It isn't sexual. It isn't a scene designed to titillate or allow the audience to put themselves into the place of any party involved other than the quiet disquietude of Mikaila as she interfaces with one of the most horrifying and patina'd over elements of military occupation and war throughout history. A crime which is disproportionately conducted against people like her. This scene does well what you intended it to do, Ash. It is distressingly real and while I am uncomfortable (as anyone should be) during scenes like this, it has both artistic merit and narrative value. ESPECIALLY as it revolves around Mikaila as a young woman in the military, performing in a capacity that is typically very strictly denied to her gender by the mores of the culture she exists within and how that culture's deep disregard for and at times seemingly pathological hatred of her gender defines those mores.

Pigs. This page makes me sick. Great work.

Judith Bradford

Damn, Glass, but you have a gift for packing lots of different kinds of human horror into a single scene...

It seems that it's kind of confirmed here that casting colour is a thing that is recognisable. So when Duane saw her casting and realised it was Mikie, she did indeed also have her childhood memory tickled seeing Duane cast, even if she couldn't nail the memory down. "Who is that wright, Sir" indeed.

This page is horrible in the most literal and appropriate way.

The Clag

I'm sorry Ashley, I can imagine how screwed the website comments are, if you actually had to add a warning to the page update. This page is a perfect example of why your work is so excellent and also difficult to recommend. Something stuck in my mind now is the implications of rape as a propagation of the Aldish people, not just the culture but those effected by the dammakurt. Once the coppers have done there work on the hub I'm assuming all those born within will be casted like whoever their fathers are, but what happens to the children? Are they taken back to the gaers and effectively raised as war orphans? Do they go to the households and families of these soldiers or are they wards of the state? Are these woman kept around once the conquering is done or are they murdered like the rest of the population? Every horrible answer brings up another more horrifying question. Anyone preaching the benefits of either of these cultures is deluding themselves.

Deuswyvern

Well done page, even if whats happening on it is really ugly. I think we need to see this stuff to understand where Mikaila is as a person right now.

Dylan

Bone chilling stuff as usual. Love it. I always wondered about the colours pymary unto each individual. Now we know they mean... Something.... God's favour... Very interesting

Sharpeslass

Ugh. The horrors of war and the evil that men do. Very upsetting. Duane would be beside himself if he knew where his little Wright had landed. And shame on Lem... for so many reasons!!
