Betailed newborn Sette is pretty squishable in that ugly infant way, no lie.

"only eyes for the dead thing" oh shit 👀 well I guess this was at least mostly an act of kindness. Especially compared to that.

Damn. Nary really looked at this baby and felt like he couldn't not care for her, whatever that meant for a fucked up criminal like him. He killed the woman he loved for this child. I... Damn. Damn.

Winters King

wow, that... that explains a lot about just why sette is so loyal to her dad. He was the only one who would have her. Of course then there is the complication of the whole selling her off as a sex slave to a pedo, and using it as a test. It's very hard to like the old man, but he is an intriguing figure, and like all family relationship in this story, his relationship with his kind is very complicated.

So, Tittybird has something to do with reincarnation... At least in this case. Unless she made Sette and her brother out of khert-stuff whole-cloth... Would also explain (maybe) the trippy fetus forest in the Khert-romp chapter... Not sure exactly how to process this new information yet. Been a lot of Tittybird/Tirna Sette/Ssael thoughts in my head I gotta keep letting percolate. Duane says Sette is human. Maybe a soul inserted ill-fitting into a fetus... Is that anything? I dunno.

Is this the first time we learn Sette had a brother? I can't recall if I should know that lol.

Kids, before we go about romanticizing the feelings of abusers, I'd like to point out that Sette's mother forced a choice between Sette or herself. Most abusive parents regard their children as their possessions, so when presented with that choice, Nary went with the option that was as close as he could get to choosing "Nary," to whit: Sette Is An Extension of Nary (to his mind). This is not remotely the same as choosing Sette.

Maybe I missed it, and I can't find the page but I'm p sure we have (possibly) seen this twin before- when we saw a baby sette in Lady I's nest there's a dead lion cub in there with her. That'd be the beast narys referring to right? Edit: found it! ch13 pg 118

Flyfly

Okay odd curiosity: How much did the fandom discussion of Sette origin influenced the decision to just straight up include her on the operating table between her mother's legs?

With how you love to string fated encounters into your story I can't tell if the brother is going to come back as a more important piece in this puzzle. Or maybe he's just dead

How interesting, twin beasts, we’ve seen that exact wording before, bolded in the book in Duane’s conscious trip in the khert in chapter 15 I think. “Twin beasts flank your road to me, hungry chaperones. the burdened, the dull, the desirous will have their life stripped from their bones” sounds a little like setts’s ability to strip memories. My pet theory might just be coming true!
