The little shot of baby Duane holding baby Mikaila was very fun to do. And then at the end, in case it's not clear, that's the line that Sette cut long ago, knotted whole again. Kinda creepy, I think! No escape.

the fetus botanical gardens is hands down the most abhorrent thing I've seen in fiction. legitimately disgusting. 100% captured how putrid they are in real life but the umbilical cords take it all the way... that's how meaty and thicc they are, and they're being pulled taut.... so nasty (that last panel is definitely readable. hit me in the gut)

Okay... So these souls are being kept from returning. Waiting for the Gods or Ssael to return? Are they all human? Are they being held out of rebirth for some other purpose? Oh the world is rotten and poor Sessine cannot have her own children. So she hoards however many she can in the Khert and keeps the wars flowing until there aren't any more spiderpaws. And when the Second World goes up in smoke and she and Ssael remake it new, they'll let all the wee babes go to get a fresh start. Or maybe not.

I'm thinking along the lines of plats... their lifespan is shortened, they have a closer connection to the Khert, and we've never learned how exactly the whole thing works and only in one very specific geographic region. Methinks there are some messed-up shenanigans in play, since the shortened lifespan seems to be wonky (i.e., only applicable to those born in the borders of a certain nation). These fetuses could be how that is done--the plats are trapped in the khert somehow for what would be the duration of their natural lives, and those years are added to someone else. Is this how the longer-lived groups store up their long lives?
