The anime look was actually the original concept for the show, but they figured it was difficult to animate and would have a less wider appeal or something.

😥 Well, there are charms to the current style that are unique (Frankly, at it's high points the show clearly has some top tier 3D animators working on it, making full use of what is apparently a puny budget) I can't really imagine Hawk Moth's presence having the same feel in 2D without changing his design, which you could do obviously, but it's not ideal. I would definitely prefer the style seen in this episode, obviously.
