I imagine part of the controversy is the whole not being able to access your work memories thing. They could tell your work persona your job is to ritually sacrifice puppies and your out of work self would not be able to do anything about it. Even if things are mostly okay, I think most people wouldn't like not knowing what they're doing with the other half of their life. And even if the work-life balance is now great for your out of work self, your work self has absolutely none. And each of your selves slowly become different people since the split. OR "better" idea, what if both selves are working and each is told the other has a life. (I know the show's already disproved this one, but the characters don't know that). The reason people are awake for brain operations is because the brain itself can't actually feel pain and its important to immediately notice if anything has gone wrong. I hadn't even considered that quitting would mean the work persona wouldn't exist anymore, not from their perspective at least. I wonder how Carol D. felt when she learnt her outie had (presumably) quit the job and now she was going to stop existing. (I hope Helly is able to figure out that if she uses the staircase, her outie is instantly there and can read the note even if alarms go off. Though also I don't blame her if she just can't find it, this place is a maze.) Also I think there's one bit you misunderstood. Lumon seems to be the entire company, but the severance bit is only on one floor. And we saw in the orientation most those offices are empty. So even if half the town works at Lumon, there's very few who have the brain thing. Likewise with the old guy mentioning the old days, I think he was just referring to a previous job. ... Petey has been reintergrated for two weeks? As in, not split anymore? But it's been pretty clear about the timeline. Helly's second day was a Monday, so today is Tuesday, Petey was gone on the previous Friday and was in but sniffling on Thursday. I am curious if the job is actually related to child brain surgery or something. The protestors talking about children's brain health, when as far as we've seen it's adults having jobs? I think there's more to it we just don't know about. Maybe the numbers are tumours and if you accidentally select a number that isn't scary you remove an important part of brain.
