Robert

goddamn good chapter but the cliffhanger

L Pedersen

Bro. I'm not one to cry cliff but come on! ;P

Doodlyboy15

Whelp, someones having a bad day. Thanks as always!

crusaderstar

At first I was like whatever it's level 43, been reading too many other litrpgs lol. Can't wait for the next!

Not a huge fan of this one and it’s not just because of the cliff. I noticed there seems to be an uptick in chapters that start with a random ascension member POV. Would much prefer sticking with a known character where you don’t have to waste space providing any backstory detail. Lyn as narrator for that whole section would’ve been fine. Chapter also seemed…not rushed but…idk felt off. Ok we need to show how the ship is getting overrun and set the stage I get that for the cohesive narrative. But was there anything here that was better than just STARTING the chapter at the last paragraph “off the stern…” or even just starting at Rains section? Yeah don’t really know what to say this just felt bad. Hope next chapter is good.

Kef

Oh noes

Conor McGroarty

Well a whale is still silver. A Leviathan though would be bad as they come with an entire ecosystem of entities loving the essence they give off that increases the local area rank.

Deegles

What is Rain and Tallheart's current cap?

Aezy Ken

SS is pretty good. I didn't even have that reaction, I was immediately like oh shit. Even though most litrpg lv43 would be chumps.

Bzzt

TH cap of 37, Rain cap of 30. If you’re curious about other awakened ascension members, chapter 173 has a helpful table

Bombastus

Is it "Nimet" or "Nemet?" The name kept changing.

Tomer Yud

Showing us how the unawakened are handling the situation is interesting in my opinion

Tomer Yud

They will probably get something worthwhile from the endeavour. at minimum crafting materials.

Octaeon

Nimit was used once, but I think it was Nemet. But yeah, bug.

Jack Trowell

Whale, whale whale 🐋, I wonder what they will do next ...

Itsdice

Aren’t awakened stronger faster and tougher even without the use of their skills? Doesn’t make sense to me why the awakened wouldn’t be there to help.

Gopard

There is one thing I don't quite understand, the "awakened" just have stronger bodies by default right? So, how is it measured that "this action attracts more monsters?" theoretically any "all-physical-fighter" should be able to do battle without using skills or Mana and if they kill those weak monsters with "mundane attacks" how would that be different from just existing on the ship, that doesn't seem to attract any real attention after all!

SenescentSoul

Summarized answer from Discord: Lyn and the other melee Ascension have stats too, not just skills. The sailors say it's bad from their experience, but nobody on the entire ship knows just how bad. The stealth cores make it uncharted territory. People consider these items from most to least dangerous: Magic skill use > Physical skill use > Any awakened fighting > blood being spilled > any awakened being present > any life in general being present Take Strength as an example. Every time you move your arm, if you have more Strength, it's "louder". And if you've got a lot of stamina, and you use it just to run and jump and punch things, that's also "loud."

Monomatopoeia

Uuuuhhhh... 2 weeks?!? 2 weeks!!! I suppose it'll take 2 weeks to do the next chapter justice, but it hurts so much...

Andrei

And this, children, is the story of how everyone on Temerity gets a new lvl43 cap and how Ascension becomes one of the most powerful forces on the continent!

Kyle

Wow what a solid chapter, thanks SS! Yeah the cliff is an epic one, probably one of the biggest and best in at least a year, but somehow it's one that feels good! Even with the 2 week break. Not sure how you did that, but great job! Thanks for all your writing and continued dedication to the story and us readers!

Daniel Powell

Lots of people seem to be confused about why awakened can’t fight, it might be worth adding a line about how stats coming into effect is “loud” in a way that attacks whales. It also might be useful to understand why a level 43 non-blue is a threat to Ascension if they’re using all of their skills; can whales swim through ice and/or steam?

Tomisgoofy

The link is broken for me, just thought I'd mention. Have a good break!

Nnelg

The health bar is stretching "off the screen", I think that's a clue.

Chymor

Nice setup, looking forward to the boss battle. Who can contribute meaningfully? Rain, Ameliah, Velika, Halgrave, Bakal (Barge King), do we have anyone else? Tallheart is keeping the ship together and Bluewash seems to have the wrong mindset and/or is lacking tools. Also not sure if the guild silver plate from three cliffs is around, but he probably cannot contribute meaningfully.

Tycho Green

Nimit was from Eastspar. - Nemet

Tycho Green

Velika can’t contribute at the moment. She requires some more time to recover if I’m not mistaken.

Zarik0

Well time to try the last measure, throwing (prepared?) decoyS Ancord "far away" and spamming with it magic Aura to make it very Loud, trying to lure the whale on it instead of the "little" signature of the ship and of the people magic on it :)

Justin

As a last ditch gamble they could try to attract another whale to fight the first whale. Then try to escape during the chaos.

Cirvante

It's a Whale! Quickly, someone offer it some micro-transactions. It'll open it's wallet and make them rich.

Planet Earth resident

All Rain has to do is blast his "reverse purify" and contaminate the whole ship - pretty sure no sane creature is going to approach anywhere near them. On the other hand it will be pure hell for all the people onboard :\

Stormlock

Halgrave is borderline gold, he can probably give the whale a run for it's money with Rain backing him up. But I'm assuming that would attract even more whales. I'm predicting either a secret weapon reveal like Rain's version of limit spikers, Rain picking a previously unmentioned skill, or some deus ex machina interference from a third party.

Cirvante

By the way, I really enjoyed Tallheart flexing in front of Bluewash this chapter. Him pulling the fish monster through the hole and ripping it's brain out, followed by taking control of the entire ship with Soul of Metal, is sufficiently badass.

ZCochraine!%

Their monsters, they probably don’t care. Maybe ‘attacking’ them with inverted purify and etheric aura could get all the ones in the water.

Elaborate

My idea to fix this situation: Aura Anchors. Put in an iron cage, or if in a hurry a weighed-down sack: *a Purify Anchor, *a Refrigerate Anchor *an Immolate Anchor. *optionally a Detection Anchor. Have Tallheart or somebody yeet it away. Assuming the Anchors don't break from each-other's auras: Wait until the cage has sunk a few hundred meters, and the whale is past it, then start blasting Purify through the Anchor to draw attention. Hopefully the emission from the Anchor will be way more noticeable than that of Rain, since he is in a metal armour in a metal room in a metal boat in a stealth field. After a few minutes, stop blasting Purify, start Refrigerate. Now the cage is in an iceball heading to the surface at serious speed, bloodying monsters on the way up. (ChatGPT guesses 20 m/s, counting drag, in which case it will fly 200 meters up in the air.) While in the air, blast a few pulses of Purify, to attract even more attention. Stop Refrigerate, start Immolate, at 1m radius for 10 secs or so. The Cage melts free from the ice ball, sinks downwards. Optionally, use inverted Detection to make monsters ignore Aura Anchors. Wait a few minutes, start over again with Purify. You now have a very distracting yo-yo - until it gets eaten by a whale.
