yessss i can watch this while working 🤭🤣💙

Katherine Strohm

I remember it taking a few episodes to really start enjoying it as well, the first couple I thought were dumb but cute and fun, I eventually just started to turn my brain off trying to understand the fake dating/tutor/situationship rules it made no sense to me!

Pooja

the show definitely gets better after a few episodes but i don’t think the lore is actually sloppy at all! they emphasize a bunch of times that garrett doesn’t “do girlfriends” so no one would believe they were suddenly exclusive. plus they don’t want justin to think she’s completely off the market. they just want people to think they met because of tutoring and are now hooking up/ dating but casually since that’s more on brand for him and it’s early / leaves her available to flirt with justin

Sophie

Yess! exactly what i wanted to say to yall. You have to remember that they are actually being nuanced and convincing in that they are hooking up but not actually boyfriend/girlfriend because that wouldnt be believable to garretts friends

Ngl I agree with Rizzo that they haven't sold her obsession with that guy. For all the effort she's going to, I would expect it to be writing 'Mrs _whatever_his_name_is_' in her diary and constant Internet stalking (like she would already know he's going to that party and what frat he's in). Think how Ruby is so gone on Gilbert that she forced all her friends to help her make him a pie just so she could go to his house; all of her stories are about a '___bert'; she got all her friends to ostracise Anne on the first day for just talking to Gilbert 😂😂. It would make more sense, to me, if he was also paying her so she could drop one - or all - of her campus jobs, but I get it would make their developing relationship kinda icky. Also, YES that guy is seeming more like a red flag the more he shows interest in her.

Yeah the J-Lo’s dress is historically iconic, it’s the reason why google added the image tab for searches bc the day after she wore the dress she was the most searched topic on google

Exactly this! I was getting so frustrated every time they brought up them being fake GF/BF, like that is NOT what they are doing! They just want people to think they are hooking up. It's stated sooooo many times that Garrett doesn't do relationships. I honestly don't know what more the show could have done to make it clearer.

Lara

We're only here for the romance...meanwhile Rizzo is obsessed with : Are they not supposed to convince everyone they're dating? or what was the point of this? HAHAHA who cares Rizzo, Garrett is hot

Rie

Idk, Hannah has trauma (what specifically hadn't been stated at that point in the show but it's easy to guess) and her friend even said that she doesn't really get crushes very often. Hannah going all in on the first guy she's felt an interest in is pretty normal for someone dealing with healing from the kind of trauma she likely suffered so it never bothered me that she's kind of obsessed with him. Then the whole dating- but-not thing with Garrett makes sense bc she has to be attached enough to make the guy interested but not so attached that he thinks she's a lost cause PLUS the added complication of needing to convince his friends without making it seem fake. Lol it's a lot but they did a pretty good job of making it believable 20yo messy while still keeping everyone likeable. I definitely do like the show much better once they get past this part and start delving deeper. But I'm definitely like Benji, I was rooting for Logan for Hannah! Plus, his actor sings in musicals and I wanted a duet 🥰🤣

Jane

Personally I never thought very hard about whether the fake dating plot makes sense because we're not supposed to care about Justin and aren't rooting for the plan to work.

Kimberley

I would say after ep 4 it gets really good

Anchor

totally agree with rizzo the crush on justin felt non believable i thought maybe was just because he doesn't feel like a real person

Emmi

So over half way through the series 💀

that's illogical to me. The entire plot from two new viewers is a fake-relationship-turned-real relationship and I neither A: Buy that she's desperate enough for Justin to go through with this random guy she doesn't like and B: I don't buy that they're convincing ANYONE she likes the random guy she didn't like.

I've gotta say, as first-time viewers - it's not a particularly engaging premise (to us) to start off on. Mainly because it a little too nuanced and also simultaneously rushed. New shows are built on premises to hook in audiences and for us, watching this for the first time, not having ANY idea where it's going - the whole-pretend-to-date/hook-up/convince-temu-gossip-Julie is pretty half baked and I'm convinced everyone who's read the book is just filling in those plot holes with outside information. There's this half-drama of Justin being semi-interested in her now that Garret is semi-dating her and I'm supposed to care even though I only feel as if she semi-likes Justin. Again, we're having SO MUCH FUN watching this - but I don't believe we're absurd in articulating how it's coming across as first time watchers! :)

What the show COULD have done to make it clearer is exactly what we talk about in the reactions: For one, they could have made Hannah actually obsessed with Justin beyond mere glances here and there - THAT WAY, we would have bought into this shy girl going through this whole "scheme" just to get his attention. THEN - I would have Garret and Hannah actually ACT like they're sexually attracted to each other in front of everyone and stop discussing their fake-plan in front of the same people they're trying to convince.... but... those are only options that would work for US. We acknowledge this show works for it's intended audience :)

Okay wild thought but what if Aussie dude likes Garrett and not Hannah 😅. I think it’d be too chaotic or obvious for Garrett, John aka Blake Michael lookalike, and Justin to all like her. She’s gorgeous but the way the story is going, it feels like there’s gonna be a plot twist. I liked the way TATBILB did it so I wouldn’t mind seeing it on this 👀.

Pooja

I was also a first time viewer and haven’t read the books so I had no info! I guess their fake hooking up plot line didn’t confuse or bother me but I do agree that they could have done more to build up that Hannah had a huge crush on Justin. I guess part of what makes that part work to me is that she’s supposed to like the IDEA of him, not him because they don’t actually know each other but that can be hard to convey without an excellent script/ director/ acting. The show is cute and fun but I don’t think anyone thinks it’s winning any emmys lol

Yue

The dialogue is so forced sometimes, it kills me lol. The chemistry isn’t bad though between the actors! I love watching this with you guys, it makes it so much more enjoyable 💕

kittyspiece

Not me thinking anatomy when Benji said chemistry

Liv

Honestly, the most unrealistic part of this episode was the fact that it was a Dynamic Duo themed party and there wasn't a single Batman & Robin in sight.

Noemi Gonzalez

I'm with you Rizzo, the continuity in the story line is a little off putting in the beginning. I just decided to let it go after a few episodes,

I know I'm a little late, but the kissing scene also reminded me of Some Kind of Wonderful, when Watts and Keith practice kissing before he goes on his "DATE" with Amanda Jones. The background music triggered this memory for me.
