####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

I mean.. holy heck, guys... WHAT an ending!!

This was yet again a great episode, almost felt fractured by how it would jump from one scenario to another (NOT a bad thing), with a completely bizarre villain!

I'm maybe going out on a limb here, but that scene near the end was one of the most powerful we have seen so far in Buffy (IMO). The way they teased the red herring only for it to be 'kind of' the situation I was hoping for... and yet I am left feeling really sad. :(

I can't wait to see where this storyline goes, I pressume this MUST be our main for the season!

Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Yes, season 5 is excellent 😁 Regarding THAT episode, the one you’ve seen before, there will actually be a bit of setup. It won’t come upon you without warning. And when you get there, please take care of yourself, including taking a break from Buffy before and/or after if you need to. 💕

Jake M

Buffy is short because of her genes! XD Just kidding. It's short for Elizabeth.

VeggieGamer

Ooh, it's a play on 'Beth'? Very interesting!

RavenLord

For me, this is one of the best reveal episodes in the Buffyverse. I love that the writers gave us four full episodes of wondering and speculating before the payoff of the reveal of Dawn. Now you can hearken back to the finale of Season 4 "Restless" where dream-Tara told Buffy, "Be back before Dawn." (And finally we can capitalize the "dawn" part of that phrase for you.) Also, do you recall the dream/vision where Faith said, "little sis is coming" while Buffy and Faith were making a bed? Another foreshadowing was Faith saying to Buffy, "Look at you, all dressed up in big sister's clothes." At the time, we just took it as Faith verbally jabbing at Buffy, but now we see the foreshadowing. All other questions, about the abomination/beast, the Dagon sphere, Spike's new obsession, the security guard's madness....will be revealed in time. This season is a slow burn of questions, revelations, and answers, and there is a very good reason it ranks as one of the favorites, if not THE favorite, of the majority of Buffyverse fans. I can recall only a single clunker episode (clunker for me, anyway), and I still don't skip it because it *also* has important information to convey.

Flufux

Ah yes, finally, my favourite villain in the whole series!

Raven Dark

For me, this season also only has one "clunker". Love that description, btw. Do we have the same one? I wonder if there's a way of finding out without spoiling for Veggie? LOL Yes, I'm nosy.

L F

This is probably one of my favourite overall Buffy episodes. The little bit with Willows terrible wrapping skills and Anya's response makes me laugh every time as I hate gift wrapping anything it's a personal pet hate. I always liked Dawn at the time this aired i was supporting young people her age in the community and felt protective of the character and Michelle Trachtenberg plays her so well.

RavenLord

There is a way! I will simply say it is episode number nine. 😆

Raven Dark

OMG. I'm dumb. Duh. LMAO And nope, mine is 11. There are parts I like, but I usually skip it when I rewatch on my own. Interesting.

Audra Foxgrove

I really appreciated the way you were so emotionally perceptive with the characters and story in this episode in particular. As someone who has watched quite a number of reactors watch this show, it’s really refreshing and validating to see someone emotionally resonate with things that I do as well, especially characters and moments that I often see brushed off or unappreciated. 💜

Ashley Evers

Hm, I’m sure that there are many characters who have some devastating fact about themselves hidden from them for a while, but the first one I thought of was Harry Potter.

Thom Purdy

DROP EVERYTHING AT ONCE AND GO AND WATCH "THE WIZARD OF OZ"!

Thom Purdy

If it was filmed today, the Big bald vamp Buffy stakes could be played by Luke Gallows!

VeggieGamer

Haha, so true! He has had so many other gimmicks at this point! XD

VeggieGamer

I really appreciate this, Audra! I have to admit, even hours after watching this episode, it is lingering in my mind! Such good character building

Raven Dark

Number two for me, but that's setting an extremely high bar.

Raven Dark

I love this reaction so much, Veggie. I knew this one would be great. Willow's line is wonderful: I just have all this involuntary empathy for Dawn. Get it? In a way, it IS involuntary, because the memories of her are fabricated. So, now you know. Now you know why, in the episode you saw later, Buffy had a sister, but then she didn't in earlier episodes. And so begins the greatest journey in the Buffyverse.

Raven Dark

I just wanted to add, I feel like even the most die-hard fan of season 5 has one episode for them that lands with a thud, but I wonder if most people who rate the season highly end up picking those same two. I like episode 9, but I absolutely get why some don't.

Raven Dark

Is it?? I didn't know that. Funny how you can watch this show dozens of times and still learn something new.

RavenLord

LOL, and I rather like #11! Yes, you're likely quite right, there's going to be at least 1 "meh" episode for someone. That's one of the wonderful things about this enduring, beloved series; there's something for everyone. We can like/hate different characters, different episodes, different seasons, and still have an undying love for the entire show.

RavenLord

For non-standalone villains -- and setting aside the complicated Spike -- she's my #2 villain, and I agree with my fellow Raven, it's an extremely high bar. I love this season!

Temujin

I love this episode and Dawn. A lot of fans hate Dawn and I get upset whenever I read criticisms of her. I had 2 teenage daughters when this was airing and I've always felt very protective and parental towards Dawn.

Jordan McLaren

This is a great episode to kickstart the main plot of the season. I always appreciated that the show made the audience wait this many episodes into the season before giving an explanation about Dawn's sudden appearance, which has the added benefit of getting us used to her. The performance of The Beast/Abomination/Red Dress Lady is so fantastic, she's immediately captivating from the second she appears. I don't want to jump the gun, but she's up there as one of my favourite villains. It's an interesting question about how a person's family situation relates to how they feel about Dawn. I'm the oldest of my siblings and I've always loved and felt very protective of Dawn, so it bothers me that some people come down do hard on her. Excellent episode next time too! Season 5 (mostly) doesn't miss :)

Mo

I feel like the odd one out here saying I can't stand Dawn, but alas, that is the case. I'm the oldest with two younger siblings. I don't like retcon-ing in general, and now everything we've seen didn't happen in the show's reality anymore, which invalidates the investment. Her little slip with Riley is also an example--how different would Buffy and Riley's relationship be right now without Dawn inadvertently tattling Buffy's concerns? Despite all that, I still think season 5 is fantastic. And I'm glad she wasn't revealed as a bad guy in this, that would've been predictable, and this is a far more complex narrative. As you say, it's tragic for her that she doesn't know. And despite the memories being fabricated and Buffy now knowing it, she still feels like Dawn is her sister. Those feelings are real, despite how they were fostered.

Jake M

I don't know if Buffy's name is legally Elizabeth, but IRL that's what it's pet for.

Vicky N

At this point all the sympathy and sadness regarding Dawn is unjustified and premature. She doesn’t know anything about her situation. She has no idea. Why would you feel sad for her. The one that deserves our sympathy is Buffy. She is the one who’s situation is sad and tragic.

Sam-I-Am

I don't hate Dawn, but as an older sister I can definitely relate to Buffy being annoyed by her and seeing her as bratty (to be fair, what teenager isn't lol). Her little slip about how Buffy really feels about Riley is one example of that. Even if she was being honest, it definitely wasn't cool and probably further cemented Riley's existing insecurities. I think at this point I empathize a bit more for/with Buffy. She's already been through so much and her life has already been negatively affected by being the slayer, but this is on a whole other level. I mean she and all of her loved ones have been given years of fake memories without their consent. Not only does she have to deal with and process that, she has to push all her anger away (after all it's not really Dawn's fault) and protect Dawn

J

I just love season 5 so much and I’m so excited to see you watch it!

Alicia P

The thing that seemed to most bother everyone at the time that Dawn was first introduced / explained was that now all the characters have different memories and live in a different reality than the audience. I think they also have Dawn sometimes behaving in ways that are more like a 10 year old than a 14 year old? I mean, she can't be left at home alone? I was left at home without parents & sometimes in charge of younger kids from like age 11. Usually by the time someone is 14 they have their own friends, too, and aren't trying to be in their older sibling's business as much. I love the Dawn storyline and season 5 overall, but sometimes the actual character of Dawn can grate especially in these early eps.

Alexis

So I am the oldest on both my mom and dad's really close to my my youngest brother and was closer to younger sister growing up. I person always liked dawn, but I like all the characters in the the buffy verse. Not necessarily I would hang out with all of them but they characters are well written and portrayed. My friend is big on Supernatural and she mention how Jack get a lot of dawn like reviews, and there is another character from later in this series that is similar the common trait is they all "grew up" with extenuating circumstances that ultimately makes them look older than the actual age in our terms. I think it a hard connection between the behaviors acting a younger kid then their physical appearance. Another words they feel they are immature for the age they appear. If that makes sense.

Delia P

I feel sorry for Buffy, her life’s kind of been hijacked at a bad time with her mum being ill and now she’s got to share her with an intruder, that’s not Dawn’s fault but it’s still not fair to Buffy. But of course she will do the right thing. I like this villain, I love it when villains are insane it makes them so interesting, it’s why I liked Drusilla. They’re always fun. I am both a younger sister and an older sister, I was never like Dawn. I was mature at a young age so I don’t really care for her immaturity, I think that’s the main reason I don’t like her most of the time. I can’t excuse her behaviour as being young because while other kids my age acted like that sometimes, I would think it was stupid and never found age as an excuse for being intrusive, and telling things you weren’t supposed to or even supposed to know, it’s just a horrible thing to do. She acts like she doesn’t know what privacy is, which we know she does cause of the diary and the false entries to cover up her real thoughts in case it’s read, but she constantly tramples over Buffy’s privacy as if she shouldn’t get to have any just cause Dawn wants to know.

Thomas Hansen

I always liked Dawn a lot, and that final Buffy/Dawn scene in this episode is one of my favorite scenes in the entire run of the show.

Eric Hunter

Buffy is usually a diminutive of Elizabeth, but in this case, Hank and Joyce named her Buffy.

Eric Hunter

Dawn can be annoying, as any younger sibling can be. Part of the problem is that when the writers were developing the stories for the season, Dawn was conceived as being 9 or 10, so there are times when she seems overly immature. In the Buffyverse, I attribute it to the fact that Dawn was created by a group of celibate monks with little to no experience with teenaged younger sisters, so they built her personality with some inconsistencies.

Shiby23

I almost choked on my food laughing at the harry potter giles scene!!!!! Imagine him as Dumbldore :D you gotta photoshop a beard on that for the thumbnail on youtube when it gets that far

x_Rhi_x

I feel it's a bit odd you telling him who should and shouldn't feel sympathy for. maybe it's just the way I'm perceiving your comment but it seems quite rude to me?

x_Rhi_x

she was originally written to be younger, but then Michelle was recommended by SMG and smashed the role

Frederique Gillespie

I'm both the eldest and a middle child of sorts. Biologically, I'm the eldest. After my parents divorced and my dad immediately moved in with his girlfriend, I became a middle since her two kids were older. It's been so long that I don't remember when Dawn stopped annoying me and I started caring about her. She annoyed me because she was taking screentime away from my usual Scoobies, so presumably it wasn't that long before I started liking her. I wish I could remember though. I like this episode, though. I thought the Abomination was awesome. Great reaction as always.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Oh wow, you should definitely watch wizard of oz. It’s such a classic!

Diego Zenhäusern

Yay, I'm so happy Dawn isn't the villain after all, because I really like her!🙂 Though I have to admit that her comment about Buffy's thoughts on Riley really made her loose quite a few sympathy points this episode😕. That's not something you say out loud and she really should be intelligent enough to understand that...
