YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!one

I LOVED that ending!!

REALLY happy to get a Tera episode, and it was an EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER!!

I am SO glad Buffy told JUST Giles! It was weirdly what I said I thought she should do last time, but clearly, it is going to make things very odd with her being 'overly protective' of Dawn infront of other members of the gang!

Haha, I love the scene near the end! Spike making it very clear he isn't going to fight for Tara, but is also the one to completely free her (all be it by popping her in the nose XD).

I KNOW I may be bias... but this has got to be one of my favourite 'Buffy' (as a character) moments! I would fully understand her wanting Tara goes (not so much with 'that lot', but away from her and Dawn) but she stood up for her instead!! Never has Tara felt like so much one of the gang!!

And that last scene was... wonderful! :)

Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

Excited to watch this later! Tara is my favorite character, and this episode is in my top 5 of the whole show.

If I want to know what is being said just put subtitles on ,no one will mind , Buffy had said earlier “ stay away from MY MOTHER!” so when Dawn says “ I wasn’t bothering her “ you can hear the tone of her voice it hurt her feelings

Raven Dark

The scene you're thinking of is the previous episode of Buffy. Toward the start of the episode, Joyce asks Buffy, "Isn't this Giles's big opening day?" She then says for Buffy to buy her a flying broomstick, and Dawn says, "Those never really work." Now that you've seen the whole of this episode, and you see what kind of person Tara's brother is, go back and watch the scene that introduces him again. He isn't being nice at all, Veggie. Even before Tara shows up, he's being very patronizing and covertly making fun of everyone there. I don't point this out to be an ass or come off as a " that guy." I'm pointing it out because the scene is so well written. It's more noticeable on rewatches, but the fact that it's so subtle that it's hard for some people to even see it for what it is, is proof of that. I hate Tara's family, but the acting from them is incredible. And Amber Benson (Tara) does a phenomenal job of pulling off her nervousness and fear of them. There is a very well done use of magic as analogy for Tara's sexuality as well, much in the same way as the end of season 2 in the conversation between Buffy and Joyce, when Buffy "comes out" as the slayer. Rewatch the scene in Tara's room between her and her father in particular. Imagine that Tara's father is talking about Tara being gay, and, with the exception of when he mentions magic or her mother "having it", every line of dialogue is a line someone would say when discussing being LGBTQ. Tara's line, "It doesn't feel evil," fits that perfectly. Even when he asks if her friends know, you can imagine a parent who doesn't approve asking someone if their friends know what they are. I love how that's done. I've been excited for you to see this episode since Tara was introduced in season 4, and you delivered spectacularly. This reaction was everything I wanted and more. This season is a favorite for so many, me included. Between the last episode and this one, I think now you've begun to see why.

One of my favorites of this season, and finally the payoff for that strange scene back in Season 4 when Tara deliberately messed up the spell to locate demonic energy. NOW we know why. There is so much that can be said about this episode, and Raven Dark said much of it already and quite well. When you look at the heart of it, it is so twisted and horrible, especially with her cousin lashing out even though the extreme gaslighting was revealed to her as well in that scene; she is truly brainwashed. It mirrors real-life, things that are still happening today, particularly in America by ultra-religious and ultra-conservatives (not talking about all, of course, but the extremists, hence the "ultra"). I won't go further in that, as this isn't the place for the clusterfuck that is American politics, LOL, simply recognizing that this sort of thing can and does happen even two decades into the 21st century. Usually minus the witchcraft analogy, but alas, but not always without it, as some will claim "it's demonic" or that witchcraft and/or devilry is at work. Anything to keep "thems uppity wimmensfolk" in line, or anyone with sexual or gender fluidity. Did you recognize Sandy/Sandi (however it's spelled)? She was the woman that Vampire Willow bit in The Bronze during Dopplegangland! Guess she turned her after all. I love that callback, and it took me several watches before I realized it.

You said something in this reaction that I gave a massive thumbs up to and grinned, but I can't say what it is without being a spoiler...needless to say, I really do think you have potential as a psychic XD The "Previously on Buffy..." for this episode on Disney+ actually features the scene where Terror sabotaged the spell, which is arguably a spoiler in itself, telling you it's relevant to this episode even though it happened ages ago. On the otther hand...finally, an explanation!

RavenLord

Regarding your comment on charity, where I live in Alaska, we have a non-profit charity called Food Bank, and they will hang a bag on doorknobs. People fill the bags with non-perishable food, and the Food Bank comes to collect the bags. The food is freely given then to anyone who goes into their place needing food. It's been around for many years, and they are a fantastic organization. The legal office where I worked prior to retirement always adopted Food Bank as their annual charity drive, and we would collect literally pallets of food for them.

This episode always makes me so happy. :)

Gary Marshall

This is one of my favourite character based episodes and the scene in the Magic Box is such a great example of the Scooby family sticking up for one another. I love the fact that from the point that Buffy says "You can take her...", WIllow doesn't say a word and just stands with folded arms and a smile on her face whilst one by one her friends (and Spike) go to bat for the woman she loves. And Tara/Amber's smile when Beth asks her if she's happy is wonderful. Great reaction to a great episode.

Flufux

Fun fact: the vampire girl Riley met at the bar is the exact same woman Vampire Willow bit during 'Doppelgangland'.

Thom Purdy

The Vampire, Sandy, who propositions Riley, was sired in the 3rd season episode "Dopplegangland" by Vampire Willow in the Btonze.

Frederique Gillespie

Hiya Veggie, You know Buffy is my favourite character. I told you back in Season 1 when you asked us to name our series overall favourite character. Mine was always Buffy. So her reaction at the end was no less than I expected from her. And I've had a long time to think about what she meant when she told Tara's dad that they're family. I think it's in Buffy's DNA to stand up for what's right. And Tara is part of her group now, even if she doesn't know what to buy her for her birthday. And Mr Maclay was being very evil in essentially kidnapping Tara away from her life. So Buffy did what comes naturally to her. She closed ranks around her people. Which definitely includes Tara. Tara mentioned her mother when she first really talked to Willow, back in Hush. She used the past tense to discuss her mother, so I think her mother passed away, though we don't know when or how. Loved your reaction, as always. Love to Woozle, Freddie

This episode is a like/hate one for me. I like a lot about it. It's great to get more information on Tara and to see the group stand up for her. However, I hate the heavy handed trope of the evil conservative (we all know who they're supposed to be) family who just wants to keep the women down. It's just so not creative, and akin to the Scourge in my book. As a Buffy hater, her saying no was probably the best part, Anya asking about the demon the second best, and Spike punching her the third.

Delia P

Great of Buffy, Anya and Spike’s defence of Tara but that’s also what I expect from all of them. It was Dawn that said it about the brooms. Riley is so high maintenance when it comes to slayer stuff and his idea of their perceived emotional distance, he’s gotten so annoying. I can understand Buffy’s overprotectiveness but she’s going too far, not letting Dawn even cross the street, if she keeps that up the others will notice something’s up. Tara was an idiot doing that spell, she should’ve ensured it was specific to only her not every demon, she could have got them all killed.

Michael

You probably didn’t notice cousin Beth was played by Amy Adams

Vicky N

Yes, this episode is quintessential Buffy the show and the character. Written and directed by Joss Whedon. You laugh, cry, get emotional, angry, frustrated, scared, disgusted, desperate and hopeful, sad and happy all during one single episode. As you said the payoff to both what happened in season 4 when Tara sabotaged the spell to reveal demon location and within this episode when Buffy and Xander started by acknowledging their lack of familiarity with her is just fantastic. The moment at the magic box when Buffy says “we’re family” and the camera pans out to include the whole group, including Spike, by the way despite his protests, is beautiful. I get emotional every time, just as I get emotional at the prom scene you mentioned. You’re right, similar feels. It is also a continuation of last episode for the inclusion of Dawn by Buffy firmly in the family dynamics, both the genetic one and the chosen one. Notice who is missing at that particular pivotal moment? Great episode, great season, great show, great reaction. I can’t wait for the next episode.

tvshrine

I know that Tara is a favorite of a lot of people but honestly I don't get it. It's not that I dislike her, like she is way better than Dawn but she is just not interesting to me, like in comparison with Anya or Cordilia or even Harmony. I do still like the episode and it is a great reveal at the end, thank you Spike.

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah I really don't like those "previosly on..." beginnings in any show and I always try to skip them as fast as possible, because they always "spoil" things by telling you what in the past was important 😕

Diego Zenhäusern

Really loved this episode and I might have cried a bit at hend😭. Buffy was really great in the Magic Box scene, though I didn't expect anything else from here (as soon as the dad started talking about Tara needing to be with her family I knew that Buffy would throw it in his face that Tara had found a new family here😊).

Johan Ternbom

Been waiting for this one and your reaction was as good as I hoped. I completely agree with this being a top Buffy character moment. It did remind me of "Now yous can't leave". Of course delivered by Chazz Palminteri as Sonny in his and Robert de Niro's "A Bronx Tale".

Eric Hunter

In addition to Dawn mentioning that brooms don't work, there is also the Wanna-Blessed-Be "Wicca" group in Hush, disparagingly saying they could "fly around on their broomsticks" when Willow mentioned spells.

Nyssa Rawther 🍉🔻

Buffy saying "we're family" ALWAYS makes me cry. I'm glad to see it has the same effect on you LOL. It's so touching to see awkward, insecure Tara realising that she HAS found her place with people who genuinely love her, even if they don't get her jokes. Tara's birth family can burn in h3ll. The kitten at the beginning was so cute!!! You randomly saying "Wikipedia" with a straight face when Buffy and Xander were going "wicc-y" made me snortle 🤣🤣🤣

New Patreon, late comment, but this episode means so much to me, because I've been in the situation that Buffy and her friends were in this episode. Back in the 90s, when I was my 20s, a young woman joined out friend group and she was really shy and timid at first. Then about 6 months in she finally got up the courage to come out to a small group of us as gay. She was so relieved to find out that a) she was 100% accepted, and b) a few of the people she'd be hanging out with, including myself, were also part of the LGBTQI community. Then she proceeded to tell us how she'd grown up in a small town, and when her family and the townsfolk found out she was a lesbian, not only had her family completely rejected her, but basically the entire town as well. She had come down to Adelaide (the capital city) with almost nothing. We then told her she didn't have to worry anymore, because "We're you're family now". The sheer joy and relief on her face at hearing those words was amazing. So I love this episode for reminding me of that moment. :)
