Ok so, I am afraid I was only able to post this one today, sorry!! The plan was to record Buffy, and if I am still good to go, record Angel right after, but I am afraid the last couple of scenes messed with my head a little, and I really didn't want that to affect the second reaction. I PROMISE, you will be getting it this weekend!!

####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

THIS WAS SUCH AN UNEXPECTED EPISODE!! I didn't for a second think we would get a Spike origin episode! I'll be honest, his history was COMPLETELY different than what I expected (but I guess that's the point, huh? XD).

EVERY ENGLISH HUMAN DRESSES AND TALKS THE SAME!! XD (Only joking, loved me some Posh William!)

This was such a great episode re-instating Spike as a dangerous villain, then in that last scene, we have it... I am not sure. I will be VERY interested to see where this is going.

LOVED SEEING DREW BACK!! I guess this does make it possible she could return in present day, but honestly, seeing her here and in Angel really made me realise how much I like her as a character!

Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

yes...watch scooby doo! its great!

Great catch on Dru's premonition. And really, if he hadn't been so fixated on killing her he wouldn't have been chipped in the first place! He could have been terrorizing some other part of the world. I always took this episode as an explanation as to why Spike was always so fixated with proving himself and by default, as a vampire, sought out slayers to prove himself against. And is partly why in my mind his obsession with Buffy persists differently. Guns were used by Darla in 1x07 and by one of the assassins in 2x10, I believe that's all. As for Riley; he's not a favourite, but I don't hate him. I agree that he's realistic, and he really has gotten the short end of the stick narrative wise.

RavenLord

Yay, you got here! Now I can finally expand on my point of how I don't believe the human is gone and only the demon remains when a person is turned into a vampire. With the very different vampires we have seen and their origin stories that we know, we have the serial killer Kralik, the lazy and drunken hedonist Liam/Angel, the prognostic and insane Drusilla annnnnd....the gentle, hopeless romantic William! It's why each vampire is unique and why I appreciate so much when the show allows us to have complex vampires instead of only the kill-of-the-week. I believe when the soul departs, the actual human remains, only with a literal demon drawing out the darkest parts of their psyche and removing all inhibitions without a soul to offer a moral compass, remorse, or conscience. Spike's unusual origin story gives us a more complete picture. I don't think it was just his obsessive love for Drusilla that gave him a spark of humanity, as he was accused by the Judge to have. Drusilla's humanity *was* her affection for Spike, I think, as we seen she is nearly as cruel as Angelus, but I feel that Spike's humanity ran/runs a little deeper than that. Angelus has zero humanity, which is a fascinating difference. I'm suddenly blanking on the name, but we also had that quiet vampire with the glasses, Spike & Dru's lackey, whom the Judge burned completely because he had so much humanity in him. I would have liked to have seen more from that vampire, as well as the underused Mr. Trick. When Spike told Angel and Buffy that he (Spike) was "love's bitch," he wasn't kidding. At least he's self-aware, LOL.

RavenLord

Oh, I meant to say before. That bit in the intro with the woman running across the grass you have already seen. That's Karen "with a K" who asked for Jonathan's autograph in in the Superstar episode. She was the first one the monster attacked, when she was stalking Jonathan at his house, and there was a shot of her running away across the grass. That was it. :)

Thom Purdy

This is a lot of fans top 5 episodes of the series! So creative. Notice how, throughout the episode, we see the 'evolution' of Spike: He's turned, he gets his true voice, while killing his first slayer, he gets his eye scar, then the hair, then the coat, And the beautiful melding of the fight scene on the subway with the present day. Just amazing!

Steveo

That bit in the intro with the girl running away actually happened already. It was in Superstar when the girl recording Jonathan gets attacked and runs away.

Flufux

I think the first scene is brilliant. There was nothing special about that vampire, Buffy wasn't weakened or distracted, the vamp just happened to be lucky, and Buffy just happened to make a single slip-up. It shows that no one is invincible, and that sometimes, someone can just get lucky or unlucky for no other reason than...because odds are they do.

Dutchkel

Def a top episode of Buffy for me. It only gets better everytime you watch it. Acting also ace.

SkySpirit

Yes! Finally! FFL! Probably my favorite episode and the last scene is probably my favorite scene of the entire show!! I think you misunderstood what Dru was talking about. She wasn't foreseeing future Spike falling in love with Buffy, she's talking in the present. Meaning, Spike was already in love/obsessed with her even back then and Spike was in denial about it (until Out Of My Mind). Have an effulgent rest of the weekend, Veggie!

If you're interested in more about the Boxer Rebellion you should check out the movie "55 Days at Peking" starring Charlton Heston. It's about the siege of the embassy district during the rebellion when troops from many European countries plus America and Japan had to cooperate to defend themselves from the Chinese Boxers

Gung Ho

Giles doesn't go out with Buffy on her patrols like he used to. Slayers must eventually reach the point where they don't need constant "watching" and that's when a slayer can become a bit jaded in their work and slip up. That's why there's no details on the previous slayer deaths. The watchers just weren't there to see it.

In every facet, I love this episode. It’s one of my favourites. I love current day mirroring the past. It’s funny, it’s interesting, it builds the lore, it’s heartbreaking and it’s beautiful. Plus Buffy and Spike have really interesting conversations and every scene with them one-on-one is captivating. I’m going to finish watching the episode now and I’ll give you my other thoughts at the end!! I really hope the Wesley comparisons don’t take away from your appreciation of Spike’s origins!! He’s his own character (and I guess technically came first lol). I see William as more soft and gentle than weak and scared (Sorry Wesley) William is a sap, he’s not a bumbling idiot around women necessarily (Like Wesley) he’s just a pathetic, fool for love!! He’d do anything for that love and acceptance! Whereas I think Wesley is posh, has glasses and isn’t confident so it seems similar but he was scared of his own safety a lot of the time and wouldn’t put himself at risk for love (at least in Buffy). I agree it’s weird to have all the English men be posh but two of them are watchers which seems like kind of an upper-class hoighty toighty position, with watchers attending prestigious English Universities, patriarchal system etc. So I’d say that alters the depiction of English men in general in the show. It’s not representative of the population. Liam was working class so I think they decided to make William more well off to tell a different kind of story, and how it produced two differing personalities. Unfortunately as well, a lot of times shows tend to make England in the past to be Victorian England and only follow characters of a higher class, particularly if the writers are non-British, it’s a commonly over-romanticised time period.

Giorgia M

Also, just to comment on you saying about starting invincible and how it’s not doing great. I think you are right about movies being a good choice because they do a lot better on YouTube and have more replay value than a lot of TV episodes!!

Jake M

Riley's not in my top 5, but I don't dislike him. I recently discovered the BBC Buffy Cult website that aired as the show did in the UK, and there's a section on each episode called "Riley, you Big Lug" which is "A small shrine to the dumbest man on TV" - so clearly he wasn't popular with whoever wrote those trivia pages! XD (https://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/buffy/indetail/foolforlove/trivia.shtml is this ep's, if you're interested) +1 for Scooby-Doo reactions! I watched #2 far many times as a tween. Has my favourite song on the soundtrack, though!

Vicky N

Thank you for this beautiful reaction.

Jake M

53:45 "It's just going to be her and Dru in the house for a while" Freudian slip there, Veggie? Do you think Dawn is Dru? XD One last thing you didn't seem to catch- Spike got the scar over his eyebrow in the fight with the Boxer Rebellion Slayer.

tvshrine

I will join the chorus on how this is one of my fav episodes. I think it may be the most well made episode ever. The whole Spike backstory, the great fight scenes, the intercutting between time, the slo-mo, even Buffy's random failure. Brilliant! This would have made a great theatrical Buffy movie.

Dipper

I have a serious question: How are you holding up with the Joyce medical plotline? Nothing to read into it, I'm particularly sensitive to the fact that you just lost your mum and that the uncertainty of that plot might be very hard on you. I think the community would agree, just this once under these circumstances, to respect your wishes and either let it play out the way it would for any other reactor or reveal just whatever you might need to know in order to have the storyline go more smoothly for you and not stress you out unduly.

VeggieGamer

Thank you, Dipper. I'll be honest, I didn't deal well with this episode's ending. It felt a lil 'too raw', tbh. That being said, I wouldn't want to know anything that could affect the upcoming reactions. This one reminded me of 'that moment' I had, and was so well done. Watching back now, I basically stop reacting, or even speaking,, it was kinda a shock and I didn't know what to say. That being said, I feel that now we are past this part, I will cope alot better. Thanks so much for asking! ❤️

VeggieGamer

Oh I didn't pick up on the eyebrow at all! Great spot! Sorry about the Dru thing! My head was all over the place!

Jake M

Don't apologise! Imagine if the big reveal at the end is Dawn secretly being Drusilla in disguise, not a "key" after all! XD

Dipper

Alright. Well listen... this season's hard, not just necessarily the uncertainty of that plotline but also just really hard in general, so please please PLEASE prioritize your mental health. From here on out, chocolates and tissues available for the reaction, a comforting friend on standby for a hug afterward, if you need a spoiler to help you through then do not be afraid to ask us for it, and most of all, IF YOU NEED A BREAK, TAKE ONE. We've all been through this season - obviously we think it's worth it, because a lot of us call it our favorite, but still. Mental health first.

Frederique Gillespie

Hiya Veggie, This is a universally beloved episode. Obviously the Fool for Love was going to be Spike, wouldn't say? He of the "I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." soliloquy in season 3. If you're going to look up the Boxer Rebellion, keep in mind that you're going to probably come across Western sources and not Chinese ones. Whatever China has become today, the Boxer rebellion goes down in history as the massacre of lots of innocent Chinese people in the name of British colonial might, I'm afraid. And, unfortunately, our historians tend to gloss over the power imbalance quite a lot when recounting it. They also fail to mention how many British soldiers desecrated many a Chinese funeral shrine, which were quite sacred to the Chinese. There's an Australian TV show called Stuff the British Stole that did a really good episode on the subject. I like the moral of the story here. I know Spike says slayers die because they have a death wish, but as you can see from this episode, Spike is an unreliable narrator. I mean, the nicknames William the Bloody and Spike didn't come from his vampiric villainy after all. I think the moral is that, in war, people die randomly. Even the slayer. She has a dangerous job. Death is always a possible outcome. Great reaction as always and love to Woozle, Freddie

Giorgia M

I always took it how Veggie took it with the whole Dru thing! Interesting to hear your perspective on it!!

SkySpirit

lol Honestly it's the first time I hear your/Veggie's perspective. I took it the way I did because Dru is talking in present tense and this context: S: "I haven't said a word about the bloody Slayer since we left California." D: "I can still see her floating all around you, laughing." (Spike's been talking about Buffy a lot, while still in Sunnydale. Buffy is still on Spike's mind and Drusilla is just referring to his obsession here. It's still there, she can sense it) S: "You keep punishing me. Carrying on with creatures like this." D: "I have to find my pleasures. You can't blame the ghoul, Spike. You're all covered with her." (Again, Dru is sensing it. She had been cheating on Spike because his attention is now on someone else - Buffy. In What's My Line Spike seemed so obsessed with the Slayer that he snapped at his girlfriend. -That and the likes is where it's coming from. Why Drusilla cheated and why she said what she said). There's one line in this scene that I see as premonition, but it's a spoiler. Other than that... I don't see it. Do you mind explaining your perspective?

Eric Hunter

Effulgent comes from the Latin ex meaning "out" and fulgere meaning "to shine". A light that is effulgent, shines out or radiates. A personality that is effulgent radiates warmth and goodness. When you're in love, you have an effulgent or radiant look, as though sunlight were shining from your eyes.

Diego Zenhäusern

This was a really interesting episode. Guess that also explains why spike was always so insightful on Buffy's feelings. He was a really sensitiv and empaphetic as a human and that stayed with him even if he tried to get rid of it😊

Hanneli Norrgard

If you do look into the Boxer Rebellion, don't discount things just because they were written by "Westerners". There were horrible things done by people on both sides, and just because something is written by one side that the world now sees as "evil" doesn't mean it's wrong. Chinese people were killed, and the Chinese people absolutely 100% also killed many civilians for the fact that they either weren't Chinese or had the "wrong" religion. Also, Buffy has absolutely terrible sets all the time that don't look like the place they should look at. However, remember that 1900 China would have looked extraordinarily different than 2000 China.

esme

this episode: "i'd rather have a railroad spike through my head than listen to that AWFUL stuff!" season 2 episode 3, school hard: (giles, reading from a book) "got his nickname by torturing his victims with railroad spikes"

Emery Sea

You kinda laughed over a rather poignant moment from Giles when Buffy is scolding the Watchers: Giles: If they were like me, they probably found the whole thing... Buffy: Unseemly? Giles: ...Painful. I was going to stay painful.

Shiby23

I'd be down to watch at least the first live action scooby movie on the channel. don't remember the second one very much but i think the first one was good at lesat.
