Dear Buffy watchers! - Because of the nature of the last Buffy episode, I do me 'final notes' (the thing I usually do at the start of the following episode) at the end of this Angel episode! Just felt right to do it like! 🙂

####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

Wow, this was like a lore dump, but in the best possible way!! I can't believe I am... feeling terrible for Darla?!?

Another flashback focused episode, with some ultra important moments! I can't believe I didn't pick up on the fact that Angel would have had a soul in the China scene!! So interesting how he tried to fool his way back into the squad!

Holland is actually great. Whenever he shows up, he instantly makes our more 'regular' villains feel so much weaker. Going to be very interesting to see how this plan all plays out!

Hope you guys are having a great week!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

This is where Darla became one of my favorite characters. She is confused and tortured and the way each of them perceives vampirism now is so interesting. I just love the Buffyverse and the stories of all these wonderful characters.

Early in the first season of Buffy, when Angel meets Darla he says "What's with the Catholic School Girl look? Last time I saw you it was kimonos." Sure enough, here we see Darla in a kimono during the Boxer Rebellion.

VeggieGamer

Oooh, I remember that line, but didn't pick up on her wearing it here! That is awesome (Angel mentioned Japan, I must have filled that in myself XD)

We're supposed to feel sorry for Darla because that's how Angel is feeling now as he wants to help her save her soul. He sees her as getting a chance for redemption here. There was the one additional scene with Spike at the Romani camp when he ate the family of that old guy (the same guy in Buffy, Becoming pt 1). So we see there why the curse didn't work out so well for the girl's family and it would explain whey there aren't more vampires with the curse. Angelus with a soul is a lot different than the modern hero Angel. We did see him already in that season 1 episode where Darla throws him out. Some think it breaks continuity here when Darla says he only kills evil people when he told Buffy that he hasn't fed on a single human since getting his soul. But it probably was a matter of self defense or defense of other victims where he would kill the bad guys. Angel is not above killing humans in certain situations, so it's not like hunting humans for food.

I don’t think it breaks continuity, because he didn’t necessarily feed on them to kill them. I seriously doubt it was in defence of others or himself, most humans wouldn’t have stood a chance against him so no defence required as he wouldn’t have been in real danger. Also Angel said Darla had seen him kill so there’s no way he was playing the hero and saving others in front of her.

This is another reason that Spike is better person than Angel. Angel killed people while souled, and while they weren’t very good people not all of them would have deserved death. Darla said some of them were thieves, that’s not a death worthy trespass. He also did nothing but wallow for another 70+ years or so before the hotel demon, and when trying to help didn’t go how he wanted, he didn’t just walk away he basically told the demon to go nuts on them. I think Angel can be a bit of a self absorbed d**k, until he got involved with Buffy. Even after though, when he learned about the prophecy about his possible reward he started working harder like he couldn’t wait for it and wanted to get it as fast as possible. It shows that while was still helping people he’s also in it for what he’ll get out of it not just because it’s the right thing or because he feels he owes it for all the evil he committed. I don’t necessarily blame him for wanting that but I feel it does speak a lot to his character. While Spike doesn’t have a soul he still shows much more humanity, he helped Buffy to understand how she got hurt but also after she was horrible to him he still asked her if he could do anything to help when he saw her upset because he cares for Buffy despite everything. I wouldn’t say it was only physical because until Spike had the dream he wasn’t aware of any attraction to her and also didn’t want that attraction given his initial reaction to it, while Dru said she was all over him a long time before that dream happened. I think he was drawn more to her strength and vulnerability equally like he was with Dru.

This episode is called "Darla." It was redacted because it pretty much gives away that it's a Darla-centric episode. Not a huge spoiler, but many reactors like to go in totally oblivious. And now you have the origin of the "family" line back to the 17th century! The Master sired Darla in 1609. Darla sired Angel in 1753. Angel sired Drusilla in the mid-19th century (can't recall exact year or if it was mentioned). Drusilla sired Spike in 1880. Master - Darla - Angel - Drusilla - Spike. And now here we are! 😁 While the Master's age is never discussed onscreen or who he really is, it was revealed in the script of the pilot that his real name was Heinrich and he was around 600 years old at the time he was first seen in Buffy. So he would have been around 300 and some change at the time he turned Darla, and when Darla was turned to dust, she would have been nearly 400 years old. That always bothered me a little, though, because in the early years of the first season of Buffy, Darla wasn't particularly powerful, was killed relatively easy given her age, and didn't apparently know what a Slayer is. But we can chalk that up to the series finding its footing and solidifying the lore later on, lol, so we can let it slide.

RavenLord

In case anyone think that's a spoiler mentioning the Master's name and age, it is not. It is never revealed in the series, so Veggie's question to the camera will never be answered as he watches Buffy and Angel. It was a question I had once had as well, so I had looked it up to discover that while it was in the script of the Buffy pilot, it was never revealed onscreen. Because of this, I firmly believe it is not a spoiler but simply an answer to Veggie's question so he doesn't have to go look it up himself at a later date.

The two episodes are very much related. 'Fool For Love' is Spike's backstory, and I will let you guess whose backstory is featured in 'Darla'. 😉. The episodes share some flashbacks, but the William bumping into Angelus scene is a reverse-angle in Angel.

Alicia P

I still remember how much I enjoyed viewing these episodes together the night they aired! That's why I always recommend new viewers watch them back to back. Either way, I love to see the reactions. I love getting a deeper understanding of Spike and just how fragile a Slayer still is, even with all of her super powers -- she is still human and still subject to luck and will still make missteps. I love getting a deeper understanding of Darla, as well as seeing what Angel went through when he first got his soul back. This episode is such a great way to move Darla's story forward, one of the wildest in the whole Buffy-verse.

Thom Purdy

Dru was sired in 1860. And Angel was cursed in 1898.

RavenLord

Awesome! Thank you, it was bugging me that I didn't recall Dru's sire date, lol.

Sonic adventure 2 (the game which introduces shadow) is one of my favourite games ever. I have such nostalgia for it.
