####### EPISODE SPOILER REVIEW BELOW! APPARENTLY SOME OF YOU ARE WATCHING FOR THE FIRST TIME ALONG SIDE ME, SO PLEASE DON'T READ BEYOND THIS POINT UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE EPISODE YOURSELF! ######

------

I will stick my neck out and say this is one of the best made episodes of Buffy I have watched yet! Sure, I am not sure I will be rushing back to rewatch it any time soon! XD But it was SO well done and honestly relatable. So powerful.

I won't go too much into the serious stuff in this blurb, but I WILL say it was also a HILARIOUS episode! The moment when Buffy asks if they are all ok after being confronted by Glory was AMAZING!! XD

Spike... oh Spike...

Riley is very frustating in this one. I am not even 100% sure what the idea was at the end, but he needs to stop it with his BS right now (IMO XD).

Love you, guys! This was an excellent episode!

Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

"The Scooby gang is powerful now guys. When you think about the brains that are around that table. And there's Xander" hahaha

Dreg, as in "the dregs of society." Dreg is awesome. Leave it to the Buffy series to make a hideous demon fun and interesting. "To touch such a...but I'm not touching! Backing away now!" (I might have missed a little of the quote, but that was the gist of it.

Everything surrounding Joyce, Dawn and Buffy hurts my heart in this episode, which makes Riley's self-absorption even more annoying. Speaking of annoying, meanwhile Spike continues to be a disgusting creep, no surprise there. Glory, played by the wonderful Clare Kramer, and Dreg are a very welcome bright spot in what could otherwise be quite a grim episode. Speaking of Season 8, it actually exists! I can say without spoilers that the story continued after the shows ended (Angel included) in comic form. I'm working on building my physical collection right now, and they have pride of place on my bookshelf, but they can be eye-wateringly expensive because some volumes are very rare. They're not to everyone's taste, but I really enjoy them. Have a good time in Glasgow! And don't stress about producing content; I'm grateful for everything you do, and I'm more than happy to wait 💜

Technically, the comic books that came after season 7 were marketed as ‘season 8’, so we kind of got one. The thing about Spike is that he is still a vampire. He is still fundamentally evil, even if he can’t do as much harm as he would like. He’s having feelings for Buffy, but one moment of connection doesn’t change his overall nature. What I mean is, at this point Spike is still acting exactly how I expect him to 🤣

I don't think Riley is at all being self-absorbed. He already knew that Buffy doesn't love him, and everything that she's doing is proving that to him. To me, it's very very clear that either Marc Blucas was done with the show, the show was done with Riley, or both, and they just wanted to get rid of him. As someone who has watched way too much TV in my life, that's just what all of this feels like. The only reason the character is still in Sunnydale is Buffy, so if that's long-term, what's the point?

Eric Hunter

Killed By Death in S2, where Buffy was hospitalized with the flu, and the monster with the eye suckers was killing sick kids, touched on Buffy not being able to fight real illness. They circumvented it with Der Kindestod, though.

here's my thoughts about spike- he is an evil demon. he is obsessive, he is misogynistic, he is willing to cross any line. he is just as soulless as angelus, and that's the standard i hold him to. he may be leashed by the chip, but that in no way accounts for his lack of a soul. he's not reformed and he enjoys being evil despite now not being able to actually be violent. on that note, i love spike. he is in my top 10 characters and i will always defend him. but he is indefensible if you don't look at him through the lens that his good moments are the exception and not a standard he should be held to. so on your question about whether that moment in buffy's room dampens the beauty of the final scene last episode- no. i honestly think that having good moments peek through spike's depravity better demonstrates how monumental it is that those good moments are there. basically- the good moments being the exception not the rule is what makes them truly exceptional.

Re: a character named Charity. I don't know if it counts but there's a Charity in Passions, the soap opera Spike watches religiously. She has superpowers!

Sam-I-Am

I don't think Riley was trying to make it all about him. In fact, to me it seems like he's trying to do the opposite by not saying anything to Buffy about how he's feeling insecure and unloved/unwanted. He knows she has a lot on her plate and doesn't want to add to that. But in doing so, he's only deepening the wedge between them. As someone who likes Riley and their relationship, I find it pretty sad to see where they are now. Season 5 is such an amazing season

Re: Spike, I just don't take it that seriously, more as entertaining. He makes me laugh and feel disgusted at the same time, which honestly it's part of his charm. I mean, it's a vampire, not real life.

Buffy in the Leigha Jaba outfit was something that made my mind go berserk! Also, that henchman for glory reminds me of Dobby for some reason :P series is getting pretty damn emotional for real.

I'm very sorry but I just can't hold back the German in me: Der Kindestod

Eric Hunter

My apologies. I typed it without looking it up.

Great reaction, as always, Veggie. I'm afraid I didn't appreciate this episode much when I first saw it and it's never been one of my favourites, because it hits so hard. I can't help but feel anxious about everything when watching it and I don't appreciate the way Xander and Giles throw Anya under the bus to try and hide Giles's "blunder." I'm thrilled you like it, though. A lot of what you know about what is to come was borne out of real life for Joss Whedon and his own experience with certain things. So perhaps the lead up to it had a similar reality to it as well. I'm fortunate in that I can't relate specifically, but the sympathy is real. As for Spike, I don't think a person can call themselves a fan of his if they don't take into account all of his aspects, including the fact that he doesn't have much of a conscience or sense of normal morality. He can both be there in a very profound way for Buffy when she's in a really sad place personally and invade her privacy in a deeply unacceptable way. Boy's got range, you know. Love to Woozle and enjoy your trip! Freddie

Xander’s smarts are more about reading people, he’s the only one to show concern for Riley’s behaviour and understand that he’s on a self destructive kick. I like Spike, he’s so ridiculous sometimes, some of his actions, like sniffing the jumper would be considered creepy but I find them more funny/weird because while Spike is soulless he’s not the kind to be dangerously creepy. He would do anything and suffer anything for the ones he cares about, strangely despite what he is there’s no malice of that kind in him. If he doesn’t care he’s obviously worse like he is with Harmony, but even then he still puts up with a hell of a lot more from her than anyone else.

Big confession guys.. it took me 20 years to realise why this episode was called 'Shadow'!! It was only when Liam Duke (great Buffy reactor) reacted to it that something in my brain clicked 🤣🤣 I know, I'm full of shame 🫠

CeNedra

RIP lil snake that did no wrong 😭

Yeah--see, this is what I think most people are unable to see when it comes to Riley. Joyce's illness is putting him in a catch 22. If he says anything, he would be doing what Veggie thought he was doing here--making it about himself. But then people get mad at him for not discussing how he's feeling with Buffy. He's not, because if he does, he's being selfish. People also say he should break up with her if he isn't getting what he needs. Seriously? Now? If it's wrong for him to say anything, then how is breaking up with her now not a whole lot worse? He's fucked. No matter what he does, he's the bad guy here.

RedStalkingDeath

Just wanted to pop in with my opinion about Spike here. I don't think this episode takes anything away from the last scene of the previous one, rather the opposite! The fact is that Spike is an evil, soulless vampire, who does these kinds of things. So when a scene like the one last episode shows up, it's even more powerful! Anyway, loving your reactions!
