Here is it guys! After a very long wait (so sorry about that), we have FINALLY started our journey through The Hunger Games series!

This was VERY different than I expected, and I definitely didn't cope well with some parts, but... I absolutely loved it!! The world is incredible and I love the characters!

I can't wait to see where the series goes!!

As always, you will need your own copy of the movie to sync too, but I provide pop-ups every 10 minutes (as well as when the movie actually starts) to make this easy!

There is a break around 1 hour in, and a give a fairly short notice for it, sorry The exact time on my player was 1:00:31, BUT if you pause at the right time, leave it where it is and you will be grand! :)

Hope you are having a smashing week, lovelies~~

The next one, Catching Fire, is my favorite out of the series. Love all of them though! Watching when I get home from work!

Benjamin Hütz

great... have to start work tomorrow at 5:00. I wanted to go to bed now, but seeing this upload, i simply cant -.-

VeggieGamer

Haha, maybe save it as a weekend reward! XD (if you don't work weekends, of course~)

Brady Renfro

Yay! So excited to be on this journey with you! The movies are great and the books are amazing! :)

Caroline

so excited 🤗 It's a great trilogy! As far as I can remember, the films are pretty much accurate. It's also not as complicated to adapt the books into a film as it is with Harry Potter, for example. With all the suspense and fight scenes, it almost reads like a film script. I think that's what makes the books so captivating. I just remember that Hunger Games is the series that started the whole ‘young adult, dystopian society’ genre that was very popular in my generation at the time. The first book was released in 2008 and many similar series came out after that. For example Divergent, Mazerunner or Selection. I don't want to criticize them, they are also god, but many wanted to imitate the hype surrounding Hunger Games.

Bethany Grice

It's easy to forget Cato and the other careers are just children too. They were groomed into being killers since they were very young and were put in training for this one purpose. Despite everything they're also victims of the system

VeggieGamer

I am so glad you said this, because I really did feel terrible for Cato at the end. Really nice way to make you feel something for someone that we have basically wanted to die all movie XD

Caroline

Oh, and my favorite character is Effie! Her black humor is so hilarious. And Elizabeth Banks was the perfect choice to play her. In the books, however, she also has a bit more text...

Caroline

haha sorry, last comment I promise but there is so much that comes to my mind right now while watching the movie. First: Stanley Tucci's Character is also gold. He is a very likable propaganda speaker and so ambiguous. And maybe you noticed, but Fashion and color as a symbol is a huge theme. The story in general has so many different aspects to it. It's very deep when you think it through. I just fell in love with the series again 😆

Delia P

The Hunger Games is great, Catching Fire is better. 12 did have a victor before, it was Haymitch. I think the careers, (district 1 & 2) have the right idea, that way no one under 18 goes in and they go in very prepared, so stand a better chance. The other districts should do that cause then Prim and Rue would never have been picked.

VeggieGamer

Ah, I THOUGHT Haymitch was from 12!! But I swear there was a bit where it says 12 had never won?? I must have heard it wrong! I need to learn a lot about the law here, but I am ALL up for it!!

caitlin

I loved your reaction, it's so interesting to see a reaction to this movie from someone with little prior knowledge. Will be waiting with bated breath for your reaction to Catching Fire!

Vic

Don’t ever feel the need to apologise for your emotional response to the death of rue and district 11’s response. I think most of us were in tears watching (or reading) those scenes for the first time.

VeggieGamer

I was holding it together, until the response. And then, FLOODGATES! 😭

Margot

I love love the hunger games and i love your reactions! i will leave a long comment giving some more informations (no spoilers!) that you might like to know. I like that you noticed a lot of the political elements, the propaganda and especially the similarities with world war 2. also how similar rue and prim are in the story, both so young. if only rue had someone who volunteered in her place. - Katniss is very aware of the berry plan, and how the game makers would rather have 2 victors than none at all. so she did do the berry plan to get them both out. - panem is a post apocalyptic world, set in the usa. there is the capitol and 12 districts. there used to be 13 disctricts, but 13 was destroyed during the uprising. 12 is supposed to be in the appalachian mountains - the audience in the capitol really sees the hunger games as a fun show, like we would watch a singing competition - haymitch is a mentor for new tributes, the only mentor for district 12. he uses drinking as a coping mechanism for this - the arena is not a simulation, it is definitely real. they cannot get out though, there is some kind of force field around it. you get more info on this in the next movie - the finger salute is an old way of showing respect, only used in the districts - there are sponsors for the game, these are basically rich people who give things to their favorite tribute. sending gifts is very very expensive though. the small vial of medicine she gets was probably the cost of a small car. - in the book, after katniss made this flower bed for rue, all of district 11 gathered all of their money to send her a small piece of their local bread, which is so sweet. - ceasar flickerman, the game show host, has been the host for many years (i can't remember how many exactly, but maybe 30 or so years) and katniss says in the books that he has looked the exact same for all that time, so creepy! - the "robots" you saw in their penthouse in the capitol are avox (latin for "without voice"). they are prisoners from the capitol, have either done some crime, tried to escape or know some dark secret. as punishment, the capitol cut out their tongues and they are basically slaves. - the hounds at the end of the games, the ones that kill cato, are much scarier in the books. they are made to look like the fallen tributes, with their fur looking like their hair and their eyes just like their human eyes. katniss says she can recognize some of them, like rue and tresh (scary guy from rue's disctrict). - in the books, katniss and peeta almost completely eat the berries before they are stopped. the berries are already in their mouths before they are declared the victors. i think this shows just how much peeta trusted katniss' instincts - the victors bring a lot of wealth to their disctricts. all of the population is rewarded with extra food and other resources, which for 12 (the poorest district) is truly amazing. and they have 2 victors as well! I look forward to seeing your reactions to the other movies!! love from belgium :)

VeggieGamer

Thanks so much for this, Margot!! I appreciate you avoiding spoilers! This world is fascinating and I can't wait to learn more about it!

Kocia

Oh, amazing reaction! Veggie would you be open to add Hunger Games trilogy to the Book Club at any point?

VeggieGamer

If there is interest, definitely!! I really want to know how this story was originally written!!

Inseriousity

Great series, both book and film. Looking forward to the new book. Maybe unpopular opinion, I'm not too sure, but I think the Hunger Games is one of the rare examples where the movies are better than the books.

Josh Z

I still believe that this series is a better adaptation than Harry Potter, I recognize that it's much shorter but the best way I can explain it is that watching these movies before reading the books doesn't leave one feeling as though they are missing important details, whereas with the Harry Potter movies you can walk away feeling confused if you haven't read the books before, not the case here and that's why Hunger games movies are superior adaptions

Garry (Not Jerry)

You’re dead right about the arrows (in the apple arrow scene) Katniss wasn’t used to the weight of the arrows compared to the ones she is used to back home in district 12. She adjusted to it very quickly though! Watching the movie first, I was confused about whether Peeta was actually in love with Katniss or if was all just an act. I feel like the movie doesn’t make it clear, compared to the book.

emmainkeri

Haha I was actually playing Fortnite and planning to go to bed, but didn't feel very sleepy so of course I watched the whole thing. It's almost 4am now, oops. Fun fact, Amanda Stenberg who plays Rue, is also a singer/musician and a model! Her voice is really pretty and she's gorgeous 😍

Michael Short

Been sick in bed all day, but i've been waiting for this reaction, so thanksk for the motivation to get my ass out off bed. lol btw Haymitch is from District 12 :)

Timfoil

fun fact Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta, was also the English voice actor for Markl in Howl's Moving Castle

caitlin

Because the story, world and characters are so complex and resonant they are so much fun to study. I can't speak for the rest of the world but they are 100% studied in Australia. In high school we studied the first film in comparison to the Truman Show and I have studied the Novel at the university level. One thing that is a really interesting difference in the book is that the whole story is told from the perspective of Katniss so we only see the experience through the eyes of a tribute. Whereas in the film we are also positioned through the eyes of the Capitol audience members. This positioning of modern day viewers as members of the Capitol and the marketing for the film (selling Capitol inspired makeup pallets, focusing on the romance in marketing the film) takes away some of the overt messaging about war and violence as entertainment that the book provided.

Timfoil

I think you're thinking of the line where peeta said his mother said something like "district 12 may finally have a winner" which does make it sound like district 12 has never won but I think they were trying to express how distressing its been not having a winner for so long. Haymitch won 24 years prior to this movie

Elizabeth D

Never clicked on a video so fast! As great as this movie is, Catching Fire is even better (and my fav of the series). The bit with Rue and the rebellion in District 11 is absolutely heartbreaking and makes me tear up every time, your reaction got me even more than usual 🥲… especially when Katniss sings the same song for Rue that she sang for Prim before the reaping.

SapientButterfly

Loved your reaction Veggie. Alongside Harry Potter this is one series of books and movies that I really enjoy returning to time and time again. Like many others have said Catching Fire is my favourite of the series so really looking forward to that one.

Leela FC

Absolutely. I’ve read and watched the books and movies for both series. I feel the same way.

DreamMyselfAway (Dreamy)

I have to say this series is one of the most accurate and satisfying book to movie adaptations I came across so far, even with the prequel. I really enjoy both formats of the Story, even tho being a book reader first!

DreamMyselfAway (Dreamy)

Soo I finally got another exhausting day of my learning schedule for my big exam done and now I'm gonna reward myself with a little movie night, watching this one alongside you! I still remember the moment I picked up the first book in the school library, I think I was around 12 at that time, and I instantly got hooked. I bought the other two immediately after they came out and finished them the same day. I really appreciate the movie adaptations here, although of course there are some differences, but it still feels like the same story. The second prequel book releases in about one month and I'll be dying to read it immediately, but I'll try and get through my exam first 🥲

Jordan McLaren

I haven't rewatched or re-read this series since I was a teenager, so I'm very excited to go back through them with you. I watched the prequel film when it came out a little while ago and enjoyed it, but I don't think it's as good as the main series. I remembered the broad strokes and some details, but I'd forgotten how good this film actually is. The acting is very good across the board, and it was more brutal than I remembered especially for a "YA movie" (though that shot of Cato snapping that boy's neck has stuck with me to this day). Rue's death was very powerful, and I was very moved by the tribute and response in District 11. Bold of you to assume that a spear to the chest is enough to stop her though - Rue the Wrathful is mighty indeed; she has a plan for any eventuality, and she'll dine on Katniss' flesh in the end, have no doubt 🤣. Jennifer Lawrence is great in this - there's a lot of subtle acting choices that go a long way. I think I remember liking Catching Fire quite a lot, so I'm looking forward to that :)

Diego Zenhäusern

Yeah, I think there are of course a lot of little details and world nuoling stuff the movies are missing out on. But the movies really get the main story beats and the feeling of the books across well🙂

Diego Zenhäusern

Great reaction as always! My favorite "comedic" moment: Veggie *after Katniss blows up the supplies*: "I guess, the boy guarding those is out of the Cato-club." Me: "Ohhh, you bet he is🙈😬😅"

jolt45

You got it right. Society is the villain. Snow is the most culpable but when this all started he wasn't very old.

Alexandra

A lot of this is probably in other comments but just some background (no spoilers, promise) - Each district has mentors, who are previous winners from the Games. The wealthier districts (1, 2, and 4, also referred to as the Careers) obviously have more mentors because they've won more than any other district. Haymitch is District 12's only living victor and he won the 50th Games. - Each district also gets a Capitol rep, which is what Effie is. She's been stuck at District 12 and has been hoping to essentially be promoted to a "better" district, which is why she's so intense about manners and appearance. I think she grows to be affectionate for each of the tributes a little but she knows none of them will live, but with these two she has a lot more hope. - Each District specializes in something they produce and supply to the Capitol, with District 12 being coal. The explosion Katniss saw when she was hallucinating from the trackerjackers was the mine collapse that killed her father. - Kids 12-18 have their name put in once for each year (12 year old once, 13 year olds twice, etc.). Additionally, there's an option for kids to earn more grain or other necessities (called tesserae) for an additional chance in the bowl per year per family member. This number also rolls over into the next year. That's why Gale had his name in 42 times (he's 18, he also has 5 family members he put his name in for again so 6 times per year for 7 years). It's a little confusing but essentially the phrase "May the Odds be Ever in Your Favour" is an ironic joke for most of the poorer Districts. - Cinna is extremely interesting because he's the only Capitol person you meet that isn't dressed as insanely as the rest of them. - The tributes for this year aren't all named but: District 1 is Marvel and Glimmer, District 2 is Cato and Clove, District 5 is Foxface (She's never named in the English version but she's called Finch in some non-English translations), District 11 are Thresh and Rue. - The people in red that freaked you out are not robots, they are indentured servants called Avoxes. - This series takes you on such a journey morally, it's so interesting and devastating. And as Starkid says "Capitalism is the Real Villain" - Citizens in the Districts are actually forced to watch parts of the Games, a lot of the time in the village square like they were in District 11 before the riot. Also, the riot was a movie exclusive because the books are all told from Katniss' point of view. Just to make that more painful for you. -The three-finger salute was a symbol from District 12 that is meant to show admiration, respect, gratitude. It's most often seen in funerals to say goodbye. Sorry this is so long, I just love this series so much! While the books obviously have more detail in them, I think the movies did a pretty great job! Additionally, when these movies were coming out, media kept focusing on the romantic plot lines which is really ironic because it was paralleling the Capitol in the universe - ignoring the fight to the death between 24 children and focusing on the gossipy story lines. Great reaction, I love how invested you were in it! I truly would expect almost everyone to have an intense reaction to this their first time watching.

PumpkinSparks

As someone who devoured the books, I think this movie is fantastic! Does it have some issues? Sure! There will always be creative choices that aren't everyones cup of tea. And adaptations always need to leave certain plot points out or change certain details to make sense as a movie - and there will always be people who disagree with the choices made. But all in all I think it's a terrific movie! It really captors the bleakness of 12, the horror of the game, the brainwashed numpties of the capitol, the evil of the president, the moral tightrope Katniss has to walk - it's so good! There are two (or 1.5) things though I truly have a gripe with: 1. I always have an issue when the main character gets white washed. In the books Katniss is olive skinned and especially in YA this isn't something that gets portrait a lot on screen. I wasn't the only one who really didn't like the casting when it was announced. That being said, Jennifer Lawrence is an amazing actress. And while white washing makes me grit my teeth, I also believe in casting the best person for the job - she truly delivered! 2. The movie did something that the capitol did (the promotion was even worse) and focused so much on the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale. This is more difficult to portrait on screen than through script (possible though), but in the book Katniss didn't really think romantically about either. Not necessarily because there wasn't potential interest, but because she couldn't allow herself to! She needed to provide for her sister and keep her safe, and then she needed to survive to get back to her sister. In a way you could argue that her "love interest" is Prim. That is all she thinks about and always her priority one. And I really missed that aspect of her character in the movie...

itsanursething

I read the books when they came out. What I dislike about the films is they tried to turn a WAR STORY into a love triangle 😒 Other than that, I enjoyed the films.

Sarah

I truly love just how raw these movies and books are. Susan Collins, the author, writes for social commentary. She specifically has stated that she only writes when she has something to say. There's a Haymitch book coming out next month, by the way.

K

I would LOVE to see a book review for this eventually. The movies are a good adaptation but there is of course a lot of nuance and extra world-building in the original format. The movie and actress do a great job of fleshing out Katniss's character but there's just nothing like being in a character's head and knowing what they're thinking all the time. It wouldn't be quite as big of an undertaking as HP-- the entire Hunger Games trilogy is about 300,000 words. Having finished Goblet of Fire, you are currently about 460,000 words into Harry Potter.

Oouga

I'm not sure how far in advance Katniss was thinking when she shared the berries with Peeta. Katniss didn't want the Games and Capitol to own her/ change her, just like Peeta had said on the Training Center roof. And if she or Peeta killed each other, they would both be changed and owned. Killing herself, she was still free. I'm not sure she cared what happened afterwards. She's about 16 and not very politically minded, so she probably didn't think they'd NEED a winner. She was concentrating on staying true to her self and staying free, as well as offering that to Peeta.

Oouga

Secondly, about Gale. Gale is not Katniss' boyfriend during this movie. They are good friends and distant cousins. He is interested in her, but she plans to never care about anyone (except Prim), because she knows the Capitol can use it against her. Thus, she's not really interested in a mate or offspring, if you will. She's interested in survival. She has enough heart to want to help those around her survive, too, like Rue and Peeta, but she sees Gale as one of her only friends. That may or may not change with future movies/ books, but in this one, there is no romance in Katniss. Any romance was one sided for Gale and for Peeta.

Oouga

One last thing, in case someone didn't already mention it. Katniss was the first volunteer from District 12, but Haymitch was the first winner. The winner has to mentor the tributes that are reaped afterwards. So, Katniss and Peeta would be expected to mentor next year's tributes from Twelve. So, if you think of the odds: 74 annual games, three winners (in two years) for District Twelve. Haymitch won the 50th Hunger Games (I think he was 16). Thus, how many kids did he have to mentor and watch die between winning and these two finally winning? How many more? Now add that for each of the Districts, depending on winners in each. How many children have been put to death by the games all because the Districts rebelled against the Capitol and lost 74 years before? Heck, most of those people wouldn't even still be alive, and yet, every year, the Capitol drags out the games and treats it like a celebration and party, while the Twelve Districts have to dread whose kids are going to be slaughtered this year? It's enough to drive anyone to self-medicate. Haymitch with alcohol, other Victors with other substances.

Oouga

I should really comment once I've finished hearing all your comments, LOL. The bowl of berries was an order. If Seneca Crane (the game maker with the crazy beard) didn't poison himself, he would die worse. He had a choice (the same choice Katniss and Peeta were about to make and were stopped from). Kill yourself, or we'll do it to you. The Capitol is not above harming people in secret and putting it down to a crazy accident. Or threatening/ harming loved ones to control people, including their 'beloved' Victors. This series is brutal but well worth the watch/ read. Trust us. You will end the series satisfied, even if a bit heart broken. It really makes you think, this came out in the early 2000s, but look at the way certain countries are today. Makes you think . . .

Oouga

In the end, Cato wasn't a brutal trained killer or a Victor-in-the-making. He was a scared teenager who just realized he was put in a kill or be killed his entire life, and he'd never win. Even if he became a Victor, he was still a slave to the Capitol's whims. He realized that when the Capitol attacked him with mutts out of the blue, even though he'd been playing the Games the way he was supposed to. It wasn't another tribute, it was a Capitol invention that might take him out. (He probably had no idea that Katniss had already been attacked by the Capitol with the forest fire fiasco.) He would have killed Peeta, but that was because he was willing to revert to training, even though he stared death in the face. Cato was just a boy. 18 and scared. And if someone didn't see that at the end for Cato, they weren't paying attention to the underlying story Peeta and Katniss were discussing at various times (being owned/ changed, etc.)

Emily Adams

Haymitch wasn't the first winner from 12 but the only one alive at that point in time

Oouga

Good point. I later remembered the name of at least one more.
