------

This was a crazy one! Not only because I was talking about Amy last week with my brother! XD Awesome having her back!

Oh Willow.... zero accountability. But I love the way Xander describes her situation in this one.

That ending definitely was a smashing surprise! And I have ZERO clue where this is leading, but I know I am going to enjoy the ride!

Hope you guys are having a great week!

As always, if you click the video just after this post, you may need to  download it first.  This should be fixed in a couple of hours!

This episode shows just how self-centred Willow is... She probably could have turned Amy back long ago, but she never thought to. It's only now that she's lonely and feeling sorry for herself that she tried again! My favourite bit: "Amy! How've you been?" "Rat. You?" "Dead." "Oh!" Great facial acting too 🤣

Don't worry. It's perfectly fine to not know where the season is going to go from here. To answer your question about first time opinions on Buffy and Spike, I was also very confused about their relationship, but I definitely took the house breaking apart as a symbol for Buffy giving in to self-destructive behavior. I wasn't sure if you picked up on Andrew mentioning Red Dwarf, but since you've talked about that show on these reactions before, I figured I should point it out in case you missed it. Also, I have never heard of a smashed burger before. Do you mean like a thin burger? If so, I definitely prefer my burgers unsmashed.

Season 2, ep 10: "I'd rather be fighting you anyway." "Mutual."; Season 5, ep 14: "I do beat him up a lot, for Spike that's like 3rd base." This episode: "I wasn't planning on hurting you, much." I think he is just primarily excited to fight her again, which is definitely toxic but I don't think he intended what happened, because he genuinely looked surprised when she kissed him. He loves to fight which we have seen, and thinks of Buffy as his most worthy opponent. He's not even that bummed that he can't feed again.

Jake M

A "Smash patty" (burger) is basically, you take a ball of mince, and whack it into the pan with a spatula so it's flat (i.e. smash it), and then fry it.

Ugggg, Buffy. She was perfectly OK beating up on the muggers after knowing they were human but it isn't OK for Spike? Also, she hit him first and then got all disgusted when he hit her back. Don't hit him, then. Don't kiss him and then treat him like dirt. Don't use him when it fits your needs and then throw him away. Either have him in or your life or don't, but messing with him, even if he's a vampire, is just plain wrong. Spike could have been trying to show Buffy that she isn't as perfect as she thinks she is, so being with him wouldn't be that crazy. At least over here, you take the drink home with you after the movie. We used to always take soda and popcorn with us after to enjoy throughout the day. It was never actually finished in the theater.

Ohhh, I just looked them up and I did know what they are, but I’ve never heard them called that before. Definitely still prefer unsmashed.

As a Whovian, I have to point out Andrew cannot be telling the truth about having seen every episode of Doctor Who, unless he's a time traveller- since (at the time this was filmed) there were over 100 missing episodes wiped from the archives. Interesting continuity note - Spike was able to enter Warren's (the guy you think has a name beginning with T) basement because his mum invited him in during season 5, when he requested the Buffybot.

Spike didn’t revert, he was just muzzled, but even then he had to talk himself into attacking that girl, he was hesitant about it. But like he said, ‘he’s a vampire, what do you expect.’ You seem to expect him to have a good person’s sense of morality, which you shouldn’t as he’s not human. He definitely has some kind of morality though, which is a miracle. And down to how good a person William was. He fights with them because he needs to fight, not because he liked them. He’s developed a liking for Dawn and some of the others over time, though. He has feelings for Buffy, which goes against his vampire instincts, so he hates that he has feelings for her and if he could go back to a simpler time when he could just be a regular vampire he might think he could get over it. Buffy coming on to him, over and over gives him hope, then she snatches it away by being horrible to him, it’s cruel. Willow’s blaming Tara, saying she is in the wrong about how she reacts to ‘little’ things they disagree on, like violating her mind. She is disgraceful and I think they should find a way to block her magic.

Buffy and Spike’s relationship is definitely toxic and destructive. I think it’s also extremely interesting as it really showcases different facets of each character. It’s also intriguing to me that it wasn’t always this way, for a good while there Spike was Buffy’s safe place, the only person that she could stand to be around, someone that she was drawn to and Spike treated her very gently and thoughtfully. Now that they have kissed, something has changed and I think whatever Buffy felt has scared her, she feels guilty and ashamed for her feelings for spike, because he’s “a monster” so now she’s in denial and back to treating him like a “disgusting, evil thing” and he’s paying her back by acting like a disgusting, evil thing. Some of the things Buffy says about Spike seems to mirror what Faith said about herself when she was bodyswap fighting Buffy in the church in Who Are You? It’s almost as if she is saying the hateful things to him that she feels about herself. Previously, Spike seemed inspired by “being treated like a man” by Buffy (as he said in the finale on season 5) and his behaviour seemed to reflect that, now she views him as not a man, just a thing so I believe his behaviour is reflecting that now too. Spike is no longer accepted by Buffy, he feels rejected so he’s going back to being evil, something he knows he can do well. Spike seemed like a reckless, passionate person who loves a fight. It’s something he’s proud of. Loves a challenge, beating slayers. Now he’s had a few years of the gang telling him he’s useless and not being able to defend himself against Buffy/The Gang. He seems to relish the idea to prove that he’s not a coward, maybe prove that he’s not what he once was (pre-vamp). I don’t know if Spike had an end goal with fighting Buffy. I think he was just trying to prove something to her, that she doesn’t have all the power, that he isn’t going to take her abuse, that she isn’t so high above him? (In his mind) I think he just wants to be Buffy’s equal in any way he can be and he doesn’t want to be viewed as worthless anymore, after her treating him more like an equal for some time now. She’s back to sort of early season 5 behaviour towards him. So he’s kind of regressing back to that too. But I don’t think it really works the same as it did before. I do think he just wants to belong somewhere and be good at something again but he’s kind of in limbo, as Buffy says, he can’t be a human or a vampire to a full extent. That’s not to excuse Spike’s behaviour, he is still a vampire. I also think Buffy’s behaviour towards him is wrong, I don’t think it’s intentional but she is playing with his emotions because she’s confused about how she feels. If she stopped judging herself and Spike so harshly, and just did what made her happy. I think they’d both be better off. But taking moral superiority out of it… it’s so fascinating to me. Buffy and Spike are both lost. They don’t feel they belong anywhere. They are drawn to each other. Things probably could’ve continued as they were and the relationship could’ve been a life raft for them both. But they are running into issues because Buffy is disgusted with herself for having feelings for Spike and the kiss made it real for her, and she’s reacting by rejecting Spike. Giving him abuse. He’s not ensouled and he’s latching on to her because she’s the only thing that makes him feel alive/human, but she’s lashing out and he’s lashing out to hurt her back. It’s all so unhealthy, which is a shame because I felt a real comfort and calm from their scenes early in the season. It seemed like the most honest, healthy friendship Buffy had at that point. It’s also a really complex character study for them both. Sorry this comment is so long.. I have too many thoughts about it lol. I love the moral grey of this season. It seems more realistic to life.

Agree with pretty much all of this. There's so much nuance to this mess.

Maia Brodsky

I certainly won't deny Willow's faults, but we really can't blame her about the Amy thing. The last time she mentioned trying to de-rat Amy, it was halfway through season 5, and after that they found out about Glory being a god and all that shit started kicking off. Then bringing Buffy back and dealing with the aftermath of that. And most importantly, it's not like Willow turned Amy into a rat in the first place. Amy did it to herself to save herself from being burned alive while leaving Buffy and Willow to suffer that horrible fate. Willow has done a lot of messed up stuff, but I don't think we necessarily need to add this one to the list.

Jake M

I honestly don't remember her trying in season 5- the last i recall was when she temporarily switched her back during Something Blue early in season 4, and that was by accident.

Maia Brodsky

I can't remember exactly, but in 'Triangle,' the 'ball of sunshine' spell that ended up summoning Olaf was something she came up with while looking into ways to de-rat Amy. But my main point is that there are more concrete things to hold against Willow by this point.

Jake M

Oh absolutely not the biggest thing, but my point was that she's not at all thinking about her being wrong, or even thinking about Amy's wellbeing when she changes her back- she just wants a magically inclined friend around to support her and her use of magic, instead of introspection or looking to change. Her whole attitude is "I'm right, and everyone else is overreacting to my abuse of magic and Tara" 🙄🤦🏼‍♂️

Madikuma95

I wasn't confused by Buffy and Spike, 'cause I'd been rooting for them the whole time, lol. XD Seriously though, Buffy has been feeling lost and lonely recently and has been hanging out with Spike a lot because she didn't feel like she could talk to her friends about the heaven thing. Plus Spike is the one who stopped her from dancing herself to death in the musical episode. I think Buffy and Spike feel drawn to each other because they both feel like they don't belong anywhere, Buffy after her resurrection and Spike after being chipped. "You came back wrong" vs "You can't be a human or a vampire, where do you fit in?" I don't think Spike reverted back. Rather since Buffy keeps playing hot and cold and rejected his feelings and called him a monster, he was trying to act like a monster. Like a "fine, you think I'm evil? Then I'll be evil" type moment. When Spike attacked Buffy, he didn't want to kill her. I think he's very possessive of her and wants her to feel like as much of an outcast as he feels right now, so they can be lonely together. Like how he tells her "you've got no one else" at the start of the episode. Honestly it's just a messy situation overall. (But I'm here for it!)

Pauline Robertson

Right, but you get the reason she is doing all this?because shes depressed from being dead and being brought back, it's not a normal life situation. It's not like shes happy about the situation? You're talking like her life isn't a f**cked up mess. Fans will forgive Faith for way worse but Buffy breathes wrong and its "ugg, Buffy". No, Buffy you can't have issues, it's not allowed. She wasn't disgusted when he hit her back, she was shocked because his chip didn't go off? and yes she was beating up the muggers, but as she says about them being eaten, she was probably worried that Spike would eat them, hence her yelling at him.
