QUICK NOTE! - just listening back, and during the Book Club I talk about how a particular year was very tough for me, but I say '2000'. I mean '2020' sorry!!

K

Hey Veggie, I think you missed the first handful of comments from the book club just fyi. Sorry if I missed it, I just scrubbed to the beginning of book club and saw you weren’t starting with the oldest one and then saw some comments weren’t liked in the thread. No big deal but figured I’d let you know!!

VeggieGamer

Hi guys, It appears I have completely screwed up again, and accidentally missed out 7 comments from the start of the book club. I am so sorry about this, I have not been with it lately because of things outside of my control. I promise to get you an update video in the coming days covering the comments that I missed. This really sucks, but I always get something wrong with these videos. My apologies to those I missed out, I will get to those comments ASAP!

VeggieGamer

I am so sorry, K. I haven't been well this week, but I really shouldn't have made such a stupid mistake. I will get to yours and the other 6 in in a separate video as soon as I can!

Huldra Draco

No worries, Veggie, I constantly make errors in my own videos as well, and they're just a few minutes long, not several hours 😅

K

It’s really no big deal at all!!! It’s incredible that you’re so dedicated to reading out hundreds and hundreds of comments. And I don’t think it’s a stupid mistake at all or that you shouldn’t have made it— we are all human and I guarantee I make much worse mistakes in life than missing 7 Patreon comments, and I don’t like to call myself stupid!

Katie

It's CAPS LOCK HARRY time!!! He did not say calmly 😁

Jake M

What a nice surprise, I wasn't expecting it this early in the month- and it's not even 11pm yet! :P Guess I should hurry up and finish the last one, then XD. Appreciate all your work Veggie and hope you and Woozle are well! I didn't mention it in my comment as I feared about the length, but "You see, the thing about the news is it changes" is one of my favourite Harry sasses. He's far braver about talking back to the Dursleys now!

Tiegan

Wow I can’t believe we’re onto order of the phoenix already! Thanks veggie, this was a nice surprise for my evening 🥳

Inseriousity

My personal favourite book of the series. I was 11 years old when this came out and I have fond memories of reading it.

Garfnob

the letter calls out the patronus because that is the spell Harry used.

VeggieGamer

Sorry, Garfnob! I thought he used Lumos as well!

Jo Winters

Thank you so much for your response to my comment about my cat passing. He was just two, and he died because the vet overdosed the anaesthetic. So when I woke up in the morning expecting a birthday cake, I got the information that he had just died instead. It was totally unexpected and devastating, and thank you so much for sharing your personal story, too. He is a twin, and his brother is still alive and just identical. I will try to celebrate his life on my birthday and my life at the same time. But it happened in December, so it's still very new.

emmainkeri

You're right he did use lumos as well!

Marc Post Jr

I think this is the book that does the most legwork for Harry’s character. He experiences the biggest growth, which is why it’s very high on my list. The only book I like more is the next one.

John Phillips

Back in the very first book, Hagrid explained a bit about Voldemort and why he's feared to Harry while they were still in the shack with the Dursleys. In the movie, Hagrid didn't explain it until after he had given Harry a tour around Diagon Alley.

Dara Jeeling

it's so nice to have something to listen to, while I need to crochet a lot of little Fleur and Krum poppets for june. And a Chameleon because my daughter decided she needs one today yesterday. My fingres hurt badly. I prefer the later books - starting with 3 to the first two. I prefer the first three films to be later ones. My favorite book is still a book away - the next one. But as said I like the later books a lot! Hope you and Wooz are fine

Dudley bullied Harry before Harry's 11th birthday, before he knew Harry was a wizard. So I really don't think Dudley's behavior is based on any fear of Harry.

Alias93

I would say that confirming something is not coming in future books is still kind of a spoiler, as now Veggie will know not to expect it. The anticipation about what may or may not be covered by the story is a part of enjoying the books for the first time in my opinion, so it might be best to not reveal such things.

Alias93

There is a point I didn't mention in the book club about Sirius's relation to Harry : the Dursleys know he is Harry's godfather, I checked the early chapters of GoF and Harry mentions Sirius's first name (he doesn't say his last name is Black, but since he told the Dursleys his godfather is a wanted mass murderer and he was all over the muggle news at the beginning of PoA, I assume they made the connection). That's how Harry got to go with the Weasleys to the world cup, Vernon was worried Harry would tell Sirius he was being mistreated if he didn't get to go. Which raises the question: did the Dursleys forget about that in this book? They're still mistreating Harry, much more so than in the last book (threatening to lock him in the shed if he gets home late). I understand that from a story perspective, Harry needs to be miserable at the start of this book (as opposed to somewhat enjoying himself at the start of the previous one), but it's not really explained how he lost that advantage over the Dursleys. Maybe they called his bluff (he wouldn't actually ask Sirius to step in, it would be way too dangerous), or maybe Harry felt so abandoned by everyone, including Sirius, he stopped relying on him to threaten the Dursleys.

emmainkeri

Harry does actually say the first letter was from the "Ministry of Magic", and Vernon just repeated that. He didn't know about the Ministry before this, which explains the "no wonder the country's going to the dogs".

emmainkeri

I absolutely agree with you about how the start of the movie (and the rest of it too in my opinion) feels, it's really weird and jarring. I don't like the directing or editing choices at all, the vibe is totally off and so are the characters. But like I said I really hated the movie when it came out and I still can't watch it without getting upset 😂 which is why I haven't seen it in years.

McGonagall turns into a cat in the first transfiguration lesson of Prisoner of Azkaban. Hermione also mentions that she is registered.

Diego Zenhäusern

I didn't comment on it in the book club (partially necause I assumed therewould be many people to point it out), but I completely agree with you that what Harry was doing to Dudley in the first chapter was just plain bullying. And while I agree that it's understandable that he'd let out his frustrations on Dudley (who's been bullying him for many years now) I don't think it excuses it (just like Snape's bullying of Harry is understandable but not excusable). That said, I of course don't want to imply that Harry's suddendly a bad person because of this incident (though he could become one if this became a habit) but just that I agree with you that this scene gives him flaws he has to confront and therefore makes him a more interesting character.🙂

Hawwah

A new video already? Aww, I didn’t manage to post my comment in time :( Oh well.

emmainkeri

Oh my goodness Jo that is truly awful. I'm so sorry.

Re: The Dursleys having the right to go to the Ministry of Magic or muggle parents visiting Hogwarts... my impression has always been that Wizarding government and bureaucracy is fairly haphazard and reactionary. For example, in Chamber of Secrets, we find out that Mr. Weasley wrote the law about enchanting muggle items and left a massive loophole for himself. Clearly, this was something that was unlegislated before and the new law doesn't seem to undergo careful review. Here, we don't see the Dursleys themselves receive any sort of notice that a minor under their care has broken the law. There's no indication throughout the series that Hermione's family is informed of any of the things that happen to her at school. The only mention of communication with muggle families is that a teacher comes to talk to them when their child gets their Hogwarts letter. I've always assumed that's a Dumbledore policy, not anything from the Ministry. My impression is really that nobody gives much thought to muggle parents or bothers to write policies or put exceptions into laws. I think Wizarding society as a whole, which is full of disregard for muggles, frankly just don't think about it. I'm sure that if a muggleborn was in St Mungo's, it would be fine for a teacher or Healer to think "Hey, let's get their parents in here", but I don't think there's any kind of official guidelines around it. It might even technically break the letter of some law or another.

There are going to be an awful lot of book exclusives in this because it is not only the longest book, it's the second shortest movie. And I'm not kidding that the poll for which of the many, many things we would have wanted added to the movie will not be even close after the end of this book. There's something I'm very much looking forward to for the next book club but I can wait a month

I like the opening of the film as it does kind of jump straight into how Harry is feeling here. We seem him dwelling on what happened in the graveyard on the swings before the Dementors arrive and he runs away from them with Dudley. I think the score for the fifth film, is the best in the series, especially the last act. You mentioned in the end of the last book about Harry almost recovering from his experience in the graveyard, but knowing this book (and to an extent the film), seeing how Harry feels being out of the loop, on his own with no one to speak to for a month, his mind is wandering, and he's dwelling on that night with Voldemort returning, and is so frustrated and angry at others being more in the loop than him at the Dursleys, which is part of the reason he is testing Dudley, as its a way to take out some of that frustration, especially with having grown up with him and been bullied by him when he was young. There is A LOT going on with Harry here, and in this book, his mindset gets explored heavily as the events of this book unfold. The film does it pretty well tbf to it, but it could have been developed even more. I think this book, perhaps more than the rest, really is a psychological take on Harry. Yeah the underage wizard stuff using spells is very nebulous. We see Harry using Lumos at the start of Azkaban in the film. I wonder if kids would be allowed to practise spells learnt at Hogwarts, at home, those taught in a syllabus would be ok, like Lumos, but obviously a very powerful spell like the Patronus Charm, would be flagged by the ministry, especially used outdoors in an uncontrolled environment. Invisibilty cloaks tend to just have a charm placed on them, one that wears off over time and is pretty detectable. Harry's is unique as you know.

Vernon thought Harry was talking about the muggle Ministry.

Alias93

[spoilers below]

Alias93

Well Harry did say "ministry of magic", but maybe Vernon assumed it was a branch of the muggle ministry? He doesn't know they operate pretty much independently, and what the connection between the two exactly is.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Not necessarily, he just said “people like you in government”. I think the point that veggie missed was that Harry actually DID say “ministry of magic” (earlier on). Anyways I think the whole point is that the ministry of magic IS supposed to be a branch of the UK (muggle) government. Except that it operates completely independently. When you think about it, it sort of acts as a sovereign nation within the same nation.

I never thought about that Sirius blackmail point after Book 4 but agree that Harry might have known he couldn't use that bluff forever and for everything. I'd like to add another explanation too, that being at age 15, Harry has just hit that spot in the teenage Venn diagram of moody, depressed and wannabe-independent. We know he's been thinking about all his previous experiences and the lack of recognition he's been getting, so he probably didn't want to tattle to his godfather like a child to their mummy. Most people also hit their numb, 'whatever' phase at some point in their teens and for someone who's gone through as much trauma as Harry that would be perfect for now. We see it in his interactions with the Dursleys, with his extra levels of sass and how he doesn't see the point in making them understand his perspective. If Vernon threatened to lock him in the shed; he might have not been phased by yet another threat, didn't have the enthusiasm to write to Sirius or perhaps even would prefer the solitary confinement.

It’s well-known that McGonagall is an animagus. It comes up in POA when Hermione mention her as an example of a registered animagus, and she even transforms in front of the class in the same book after the first divination’s class (remember? She is baffled and curious as to why the class isn’t applauding).
