Oof-Tee-Poof, everyone!! 👋

Here is a chance to get your comment read out in the next Book review video!

If you are reading along with the reviews, we are covering chapters "The Advance Guard" & "Number Twelve Grimmauld Place"! So if you have any thoughts, opinions, comparisons or questions regarding these, please leave a comment below!

I do have to ask, try to keep them fairly short, like 4 or 5 sentences.  That way I can cover more when making the video.  Also try to keep them on subject and not referencing anything that we are yet to cover. Ideally, keep it to 1 comment each if you can (if you have more to say after commenting, you can edit it and add to it! :) ).  These are just rough guidelines rather than rules, I want to be able to fit in as many of you as possible! :)

NEW FEATURE!! - As some of you may want to make a comment, but not have it replied to by others, you can now Message me your thoughts on the chapters by DM'ing me on here.  If you do, please follow all the above rules, especially avoiding mentioning things in future chapters or books!  Oh and please start your DM message with "Book Club -"!

To anyone that does reply to comments below, please make sure you are being friendly and respectful!  A lot of tone and meaning can be lost in text, after all!  If you disagree with someone on something, keep it polite and remember the golden rule in life - Sometimes you have to just agree to disagree! :)

S'mae Woozle! Hope you and the dapper hatted man are doing well. Chapter 3 Instantly the real Moody feels different to me- he calls Harry by first name, instead of 'Potter', and we get to see just how paranoid he is. Interesting the others call him "Mad-Eye" to his face, I would've thought that was a behind-his-back nickname! Questions I have- Who set off the sparks to signal they could leave? Where were they? What were they waiting for? Chapter 4 My dislike for Harry grew exponentially when I first read this chapter. I understand him being angry, but there's a limit to how much Ron and Hermione should have to put up with. And poor Hedwig didn't need a literal earful...he doesn't even apologise! I really don't understand why Hermione winces at 'Voldemort'- she's a Muggle born, she's not been brought up with the horror stories like Ron and the rest of the wizarding world. Realistically, I don't think she should have such a visceral reaction. Can't imagine Movie Ginny flicking dungbombs at the door!

Jo Winters

Hello Veggie! Happy spring. Chapter 3 This chapter reminded me how this book has so much more life and personality than the movie. Did you like the dynamics in the book? What do you think about the real Moody? Did Barty Jr. do a good job pretending to be him? Isn't his bickering with Tonks cute? Chapter 4 The house, especially the heads of the elves, is so creepy. I cannot imagine growing up in that environment. Again, that scene when Harry blows up—the movie version is so understated. It's so weak. Harry says in the movie that he feels so angry all the time, but it doesn't show in the script or the acting. I'm dying to know your opinion on the Percy situation. And your opinion on Sirius' mummy, of course. What a sweet old dearie she is.

K

I have always been a Percy fan, and seeing you also be fond of him l've been excited for you to see what got cut from the movies. I see both sides of the initial argument here. Arthur is absolutely correct to be suspicious about Percy's promotion, Percy is reasonable to be stung by that response, and everything blows up into hurt feelings and terrible behaviour. I really disagree with Percy’s actions here, especially the way he treats Molly, but like I’ve said before I love a flawed character! It's also a way for the story to show that the Ministry propaganda campaign against Dumbledore and Harry is having real success-- even a Weasley falls prey to it. It makes sense for it to be Percy, the hyper-ambitious 19-year-old who has always had a lot of deference to authority and status. Of course he's on board with Fudge's point of view when Fudge is offering him a prestigious job mere months after the disaster at his last role!

Andrew K

Hi Veggie! The Percy plot that was missing from the movies! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Percy info, since he’s one of your favourites. Personally, I feel as though Percy is in the wrong for what he said to his father and the stance he’s taken, but I can see why he’s gone this way - he has been manipulated and used by the Ministry. He is young, hungry, and impressionable, so Fudge has taken advantage of that. It’s great to meet members of the Order - Tonks & Lupin had their characters ripped away in the last few movies due to time, I can’t wait for you to learn more about them. There better be a scene in the TV show of the Dursley’s turning up demanding to claim their All-England Best Kept Suburban Lawn Award. Lastly, it’s mentioned Fred and George passed their Apparition tests. Did you think there was a test and license for apparating and disapperating? Whose heel turn was worse - Cena’s or Percy’s?

Howiedoing

Tonks is definitely one of my favorite side characters. If I could choose one superpower it would definitely be to change my appearance at will. All England best cap Suburban Lawns competition love to see the Dursley’s reaction when they found out it wasn’t real.

Josh Z

I said that I would defend Harry the whole book, and I meant it. I think his explosive anger is like water overflowing a bucket. I don't believe that he is angry just because he was alone. He is furious at being left out of things that directly concern his life, which is BS considering what he has faced. Unfortunately, Ron, Hermione, and others bear the load of his anger, but it's not like there is an adult he can use for release. It's his life, and nobody tells him anything other than vague or patronizing responses that tell him zero about the situation. It would be enough to make anyone explode. I always forget about Mrs. Black's screaming portrait. Not a house I would want to sleep in that's for sure. If I were Ginny that is where I would be tossing the dungbombs lol

Grace

Hi Veggie!! A bit of a rant here. Couldn't the movie give Ginny a line or two? All she says in this portion of the movie is a "hi mom" and that's it. Meanwhile in the book she's a part of the conversation..and it's so weird because she's the only character who's overlooked in that whole scene, every other character gets to have a line or screentime at least. Despite the fact that Percy's actions are inexcusable, I love it from a writing perspective. It creates a lot of tension within the weasley family and makes the reader more engaged in Percy's character. Before order of the phoenix, I didn't even think much of Percy. This book changed that.

Josh Z

It's because she is muggle born I think. She knows what Voldemort and his death-eaters have done to non magical people like her parents. The Roberts from the previous book are the perfect example of why she would flinch at his name. Besides, her best friend was tortured and very narrowly escaped being killed at the hands of Voldemort . It's one thing hearing it while he was seemingly dead but he's alive again. It makes sense to me.

Diego Zenhäusern

WFFTITWFF Veggie! I'm actually someone who always liked Percy quite a lot. I think it's probably because I see quite a bit of myself in his studious and inquisitive side (though less so in his ambitious side😅). That's also the reason why Hermione is probably my favourite character and why it makes a lot of sense to me that she would have gotten along with Percy way better than most other people up to this point. That said, I have to say that I can't defend his behaviour at this point in the story. I can understand however, where it's coming from. And my liking of Percy certainly makes me more forgiving than most...which is why I'm always more dissapointed than mad at him at this point in the story😕 Also: Ginny certainly has got more character in this chapters than in the movies. I don't see movie-Ginny flat out lying in Molly's face about the Dungbombs.🙃😅 *edited to remove spoilers*

John Phillips

Chapter 4 is where we officially meet Capslock Harry. The part where he's yelling at Ron and Hermione is in all caps. Ginny throwing dungbombs at the door is a great moment and I think the twins have rubbed off on her a bit. You've said in the past that you know a lot of people don't like Percy. Now we're at the point in the series where you learn why.

Huldra Draco

Hiya Veggie! Chapter 3: Did you remember the Order member Dedalus Diggle from the first book? "A tiny man in a violet top hat had bowed to him once while out shopping with Aunt Petunia and Dudley. After asking Harry furiously if he knew the man, Aunt Petunia had rushed them out of the shop without buying anything." He also met Harry in the Leaky Cauldron with Hagrid on his first trip to Diagon Alley, he was the tiny wizard who shaked Harry's hand several times. Chapter 4: Ambition seems to be more a trait of Slytherin than Gryffindor, do you think the Sorting Hat was debating putting Percy in Slytherin but ended up putting him in Gryffindor because Percy wanted to be in the same house as his family? It's interesting to hear how angry and frustrated Harry is with Dumbledore in the book, compared to the movie.

Garfnob

Greetings, Chapter – 3 - why is Harry being treated like a kid? Because he is a kid. - was that a good security question? Most of the school saw Harry’s patronus at the quidditch match. - how does “steeling” the lights, then lighting your wand not draw attention to you. You are now the only lite thing in the street. Chapter – 4 - How is a wound half healed with magic? - Percy finally shows his true colors. - how many house elves does Ron know? Last book he did not know what one looked like.

Madikuma95

Hi, Veggie! You asked about my username last time, it's not a reference to DanganRonpa, but I did indeed choose it because "kuma" means "bear" in Japanese! And my icon is from my favorite anime, Attack on Titan, which I highly recommend! Onto the chapters: Fun fact, the film kept Tonks's hair purple instead of pink because pink is so strongly associated with Umbridge. Tonks also seems to have a much more laidback personality in the book. Now we're introduced to the infamous CAPSLOCK HARRY, where he shouts for multiple sentences at a time. 😂 I know some might find the teenage angst annoying, but I tend to enjoy characters with a bit of a temper! Poor Hermione and Ron, though. At least we start to see Ginny's personality shine! Just like in Goblet, the Daily Prophet smearing Harry really shows how media propaganda can be used against people, and how easily lies can be believed. Grimmauld Place is one of my favorite locations in the series, but I'll say more about it later! Any thoughts on Sirius's mother?

Music Here

-I like that the book briefly mentions that the Moody Harry came to know was an entirely different person. Therefore Harry's reservations are expected. The movie didn't address it at all. -It has always bothered me that they don't care about the Statute of Secrecy in the movies. They fly so low it almost looks like they WANT to be seen, while in the book they fly high to prevent muggles from noticing them. -In Chamber of Secrets Harry got a warning for underage magic usage even though Dobby was the one who used magic. This time Tonks is doing magic in Harry's room but there doesn't seem to be a problem, even though the Ministry would be happy to discredit Harry in any way. The Order is also there secretly, so I doubt they told the Ministry they were picking Harry. The way this tracking works is confusing.

Alias93

Chapter 3: I like that we get some mentions about the fact that the ''Moody'' we knew in GoF wasn't the real one, and that the experience had some side-effects on the actual Moody. From what we can see about his personnality in this chapter, Jr was doing a pretty good job at impersonating him. I think it was a good idea to have Lupin in the group that comes to get Harry, otherwise it would have been only people he doesn't know and Moody, who he doesn't completely trust at first. Chapter 4: Did Harry's shouting in all caps come through in the audio-book? The movie version doesn't really do it justice, he barely raises his voice before Fred and George show up. We get to see a new, nastier side to Harry's personnality as he notices that he isn't really upset about Hedwig injuring his friends at his request. Being mean to Dudley was one thing, but to Ron and Hermione? Well, the cat is finally out of the bag. You were warned, but did you expect the Percy situation to be like this, and to escalate so quickly? I can understand his frustration, but the things he said to Mr Weasley were completely out of line. Do you think we'll ever get closure, or is that it for Percy's relation to his family? Mrs Black's screaming portrait is a nice detail, it's a bit weird that it kind of is in the movie but without ever paying off. What/who did you think Kreacher was talking to when Harry passed him walking up the stairs in the movie?

Cj Hayes

Hey Veggie! I really hope we get to hear a lot of your opinions on the Percy situation, as all of it was cut from the movie and you are the only Percy stan I know. Do you view him any differently? What he said to his parents was pretty harsh…. Hope you have a lovely day!

Florian

Hi Veggie, really long chapters here. Of course the Dursleys would believe they won a price for their garden. What do you think about the real Moody? What are the first impressons on the wizards we, don't no much or anything about? Diggle, Kingsley and Tonks! My favourite characters Fred and George, calming Harry down with ease, a task his best friends are struggling with. What do you think about the information we get on Percy?

Mel

Hi Veggie, I don't have much to say, so I'll dwell on a few details :) We learn, through Tonks, that household spells (like, I imagine, Mrs Weasley's cooking spells) are not so easy to perform... you have to be good at them or need practice. And yet she's an Auror. I've never loved Tonks, or hated her. She's always left me a bit unmoved, and yet on this reread, I love this chaotic ‘big sister’ side to her, saying whatever comes into her head. Again, especially for an Auror. You can be punished for casting a spell and the Ministry will know ... but what about the broom? It requires a magical action to use it... Fun note : In the French version, there is a translation error (which has never been corrected, despite the reprints) about Nymphadora's father. When she says: Very clean, aren't they, these muggles ? My dad's muggle-born and he's a right old slob. Our translation reads: My dad is a muggle. But this is corrected later in the following chapters.

Mel

I totally agree with you about Lupin. It's precisely a point I was going to raise in my comment but you've rightly made it.

Alias93

Interesting, I never picked up on that mistake, but tbf I haven't read the french version of the books in at least 15 years.

Kate Bogd

Hi Veggie! I missed the previous book club, but you are now getting into my favorite book of the series! I love the politics of it, it’s not as flashy and action-packed book as GoF, but it feels much more serious and realistic. As to these chapters, I think Harry is being quite a realistic teenager here - he has some anger-management issues, he thinks of himself as a responsible grown-up, who deserves to know everything, but he is also still a bit childish. I also like a mention of the deluminator! I’m pretty sure it’s the first time Harry is seeing the device. The Prophet is playing the propaganda game really well - slowly discrediting Harry and Dumbledore without being too headstrong. I grew up in Russia surrounded by propaganda and this is very realistic, makes my blood boil 😵‍💫 Just one of the examples why I love this book - this a strong social commentary. Finally, why the hell is Hermione there? Why doesn’t she spend her short summer vacation with her parents? She already avoids going home in winter. This always confused me, especially as there is no indication of her having bad relationships with her parents.

Mel

Indeed, it's been a long time! To tell the truth, after countless re-readings, this is the only time it jumped out at me.

Mel

It's something I've always wondered about Hermione. Honestly, I think it's to serve the story. But it's fair to say that she's a teenager in the middle of a magical world and she doesn't want to miss out on any of it? especially as, when you're a teenager, you might feel less guilty about not seeing your parents much. We can also take into account the fact that she's not 11 any more, she's now used to not living with them... but it's true... her poor parents. I wish Rowling had integrated them more into wizarding life, for example, like in COS where we saw them in Diagon Alley.

Steven

Hey Veggie! There’s not much in these chapters for me to discuss so I’ll keep it brief, what did you think when you heard about Percy effectively disowning his family? When I read these chapters for the first time it made reading this book pretty difficult for me the first time. I do like this direction for his character though, I find it very interesting (I wish it was in the movie too but at least they tried to show it passively without having this entire side story.) I’d also love to know what Snape had to discuss at the meeting

Kate Bogd

I agree, that Hermione is there purely to serve the story, but it feels unrealistic, that her parents would just let her to stay all summer somewhere else. When was the last time she saw them at all? 😅

Gugurupurasu Daikirai

Hey Veggie and Woozle, Chapter 3: We finally meet book Tonks and Kingsley with some others, and we get more of the real Mad Eye Moody than we had in all of last book. Lupin is back in the story too Chapter 4: Percy just heel turned like John Cena. Some people won't like this. Even Harry could immediately predict that Percy would react to what Arthur said to him very badly, this means a sassy 15 year old who had just freshly thrown a tantrum at his friends still has more tact than Arthur Weasley. I know we're supposed to automatically side against Percy but I'm of the minority that think Percy wasn't 100% in the wrong here. It was kind of unfair for 19 year old Percy to have an inquiry over not noticing Crouch being controlled when Dumbledore just had a death eater teaching under his nose at his school for an entire year. He had been having a rough summer and had just had his father say something to him he would find very insulting, but then insinuating that he would spy on the family was the final straw that meant he was not only going to send some low blows back at Arthur but he was going to go scorched earth on the whole family and turn Arthur into Juror #3. Harry's not the only angry teenager who lashes out at those close to him in this book. I'll just point out one small detail, "a blank stretch of canvas in an ornate picture frame was all that relieved the bareness of the peeling walls and as Harry passed it he thought he heard someone lurking out of sight snigger."

SavageKim

Hi Veggie! Chapter 3 - Basic wand safety is important, you don't want to lose a buttock! And the Put-Outer comes back! - Book Tonks is such a fun character. I loved learning why she can change her appearance. The movie shows her doing it to make Ginny laugh, but doesn't explain that it's not something everyone can do. - I liked the description of the disillusionment charm - something to help keep you hidden that isn't a cloak. - Harry has joy and stress relief as he flies, but then gives a very realistic description of how uncomfortable it would actually be to fly long distances on a broom! Chapter 4 - Harry's feelings are so real here! I think the audiobook does a decent job translating the "all Caps Lock" way it's written in the book. - He finds out that Ron & Hermione actually don't know much at all, little more than him, but they've been "involved" and "together" and that hurts him too. - Harry winds up realizing he is mainly angry at Dumbledore. - Ginny shows her smarts and personality! Take care!

I appreciate your point of view on Percy, I hadn't given his feelings much consideration before now, thanks.

Hey Veggie! We know the Dursley's are cruel and have locked Harry up before, but leaving the house with him locked in his room?!?! What if there is an emergency? That is a fire hazard! I feel like here we really start to see how impatient and hot-headed Harry is and how incapable he is of recognizing the "long game". He always wants to Go Go Go and know everything immediately, which is understandable but really indicative of him being a hurt teenager. To me that is also evident in how he only looked at the front page of the Daily Prophet before. If he thought about it a little more he might have realized that it is highly unlikely that small developments regarding the ministry's/wizarding worlds knowledge of Voldemort would be front page news. Such headlines would only provoke Voldemort and the Death Eaters, or they would be published if the Death Eaters had already infiltrated the wizarding Government. Also the adults around him have dealt with Voldemort being on the loose before and might have a little more insight in what are smart decisions, even if they hurt Harry or he thinks everybody is scheming about him behind his back.

Hi to all Steven Fry is usually good with accents, but what the heck is up with what he gave Tonks? Google "Steven Fry Tonks accent" and you'll see the debates on it. It's so inconsistent, nobody can decide what it's supposed to be. A few suggestions have been Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Barnsley, Birmingham, Liverpool, Burnley, Lancashire, Leeds, Sheffield, etc. Does anyone else find it odd that the Muggle-loving Weasleys live in the middle of nowhere, not even close to Wizards, let alone Muggles. Yet the Muggle-hating Blacks live in a highly-populated Muggle area, where the place is snided out with them? This is the section of the book where we get the first inklings about Percy heading towards Gitdom. I feel sorry for you, as we know how much you like him. At least if you change your mind about liking him, you've now got a photo to chuck darts at lol. Or just 'angrily glower at' if you're not into gratuitous violence. I first met Percy's actor Chris Rankin at the velodsrome at Derby where they regularly hold conventions. He told me his fiancé's name is Ness {like mine}. They run a farm together. I follow them on Facebook. We met him again at a convention at the Embassy ballroom in Skegness. He recognised me which was lovely. That's where I got your photo signed. Whilst I was at that convention, there was another Harry Potter actor, Martin Ballantyne. He purchased something from Mundungous in Diagon Alley in "Deathly Hallows 1". \I got an autograph and my photo taken with him. Slight goof on Rowling's part. When the twins apparate into the room, the tails of the extendible ears are already snaking out under the door. Wouldn't they be under their own door, not Harry's door? I love the "There might be a couple of people 50 mile away who didn't hear you" Copied from the Facebook page for the London film and comic con "CHRIS RANKIN is joining us at London Film & Comic Con! Chris is best known for playing Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter film franchise. The event takes place 5-6 July 2025 and Chris joins us on Sunday of the event. Tickets available now!" Colin Baker will be there too. I'm going for Richard Dreyfus. ❤️❤️ Plus a few Harry Potter actors and one of the Arcane voice actors. https://londonfilmandcomiccon.com/guests-main/

Hi Veggie! Yes, you can for sure just call me Wulfric :). Chapter 3: - I find it funny that Elphias Doge is part of the guard. If you remember from Movie 7, he has known Dumbledore for a very long time meaning he is also very old. Imagining him on a broom makes me chuckle. - Where do you think Moody got his eye from? Is there a specialist somewhere who sells magical body parts? If you could choose a body part to be magical, what would it be/do? Chapter 4: - I love Fred & George’s sarcasm: “We thought we heard your dulcet tones”. It really defuses the tension - Tonks telling Ginny how to test if the kids can eavesdrop on the Order meetings is really cool of her - I really enjoy all the politics in this book, curious to see how you like it!

Andrew K

I’ve always loved the description of the broom ride, especially with how cold and wet it would be flying so high up. It’s a good element of realism that does take some of the wonder out of flying, but makes it feel way more real and authentic

Mel

"Yet the Muggle-hating Blacks live in a highly-populated Muggle area, where the place is snided out with them? " I'm glad you raised this point. It's a question I've been asking myself since day 1. Oh, and audio books are something I really can't get used to (Harry Potter or anything else, for that matter). But in the French version, Ron has a lisp, and Remus has a very strong Italian accent. So...

Nessy-Bobs

I never noticed. It came up in a short video on either Facebook or YouTube.

Good day to you, Veggie! Hope you're doing well! I just have a few quick things I’d like to touch on—don’t want to make this comment too long. Tonks being a Metamorphmagus is such a fascinating ability. This is also the first mention of Kreacher and his rather unique goal of having his head cut off and mounted on a plaque. Everyone has their ambitions, I suppose. We also get a glimpse of Sirius’ mother—she seems like a lovely lady. Then, of course, my favorite part—Harry unloading all his frustration. It really humanizes him and adds so much depth to his character. He’s not perfect; he has struggles, and sometimes he says hurtful things in the heat of the moment. It makes him feel so real. And the cherry on top—Percy. I won’t say much because I know everyone else will cover it, but ever since you mentioned Percy was one of your favorite characters, I’ve been waiting to see your reaction to this! Always great to hear your thoughts—take care and keep well!

Heyo Veggie! We finally made it to Grimmauld Place!!! I love all the scenes here and the description is so eerie ❤️ you have quite a treat ahead of you Two things I always wondered about. It will be interesting to here your musings on them: 1. Grimmauld Place is protected and only once Harry was told where the headquarter is, was he able to see the house. Did noone notice that a house is suddenly missing? How does this work space-wise? Like, when someone walks down the street they still have to cross the houses distance. Do they get shunted from 11 to 13? Or do they basically walk on one spot for some time? Or does the protection not work on muggles, and they see nr 12 just fine? 2. Harry was smart enough to listen to the whole of Muggle News and read the complete Muggle Newspaper in case they mention something noteworthy about Voldemort without knowing. Why would he not apply the same principle to the Daily Prophet? At that time Harry didn't know yet that the Prophet denies Voldemorts return. So once he realized that Voldy doesn't make any big moves yet, read through the smaller columns. Maybe there are increased disappearances, or weird happenstances, or eerie sightings, or anything. C'mon Harry! Use your noggin!!! And yes for badass Ginny!!! Book Ginny is one of my absolute favourites - movie Ginny was just ... there... Especially in this book you gonna see some REAL differences between the two!

S1lm4r1l

There's a theory that she Obliviated her parents and sent them to Australia after Book 4 not 6. But of course, she'd have been nicked for doing under-age magic herself. Unless she counted on getting the same sort of warning Harry got. Doesn't seem like a very Hermione-esque thing to do. Her parents must be so lonely.

S1lm4r1l

We finally get the introduction of one of the best, (but sadly underwritten) characters in the series. Nymphadora Tonks. Interestingly Stephen Fry gives her a Yorkshire Accent, I think this was done to provide a bit more variety. The set design of 12 Grimmauld (Grim Old) Place in the films are highly accurate to the books, but its atmosphere is undercut by the lack of negativity. Percy's absence is explained, and unfortunately we only get his perspective through everyone else. I think the accusation that Percy got his promotion without earning it must've hurt Percy deeply, especially as he's always had to struggle to get his parents' attention. Would Percy have spied on his family for Fudge? Which "Household" spell would you want to know? Do you think Voldy knows the particulars of Harry's trial? Date, time etc.

Sunblooded

First time commenting and sorry in advance for it being so long, most is just evidence backing up the point from the first paragraph so can be skimmed over really. There a theory that the Weasley’s actually have some seer blood, as a lot of their predictions (even the jokes) actually come true (especially Ron). The first example from philosophers stone being Ron commenting before the sorting that Fred (or could have been George?) told him they’d have to wrestle a troll, that happens later in the book. Second example is when Ron jokes that riddle might have got the award for the school by killing myrtle, which he did do, in the same book he said that lockheart only claimed to have done all the things in his books (before the plot reveals him as a fraud). Some examples from Azkaban are during the first divination class ron mentions harry getting unexpected gold (winning twiwizard tournament?). The last example I can remember off the top of the head (though there’s probably more I didn’t remember) is when harry and Ron are doing divination homework (early in goblet) and Ron predicts harry will be in danger of burns (dragon task), drowning (2nd task), loosing a treasured possession (also 2nd task) and being stabbed in the back by someone you thought was a friend (moody?). Also a few example from later books which I won’t go into here Also can’t wait for your thoughts on the plot lines from these last 3 books that didn’t make the films, especially in half blood prince and deathly hallows, won’t say any more cus I don’t wanna spoil it. Also so sorry it’s not related to the specific chapters but honestly there’s nowhere specifically to mention it ajs I wanted to point it out, and also so sorry the comments a really long, I’ll try not to ramble so much if I comment on future book clubs.

Nessy-Bobs

Something I forgot about in the first chapter. In the film version, from Dudley's viewpoint, he can see the Dementor holding Harry halfway up the wall by his neck. If Muggles can't see them, it would have been more dramatic if he saw Harry halfway up the wall with no visible signs of support.

S1lm4r1l

Spoiler protection.

S1lm4r1l

The books do talk about how the Muggles think its funny how the Square is missing No.12 But they've just accepted it as a quirk of living there.

PumpkinSparks

That part I can accept. But one, that wasn't always the case. The fidelius charm was put there quite recently. Did everyone just forget that 12 existed a year ago? Did they cast a mass modify memory? Or does that mean to suggest that the Blacks hid their house from Muggles before that as well? Two, how does that work physically? The street is still the same length. And it is suggested that there isn't just a house sized hole, rather that 12 pushes the other houses aside when appearing. So how do people not noticing something wonky when walking down the street?

S1lm4r1l

Sirius definitely implies that his relatives put numerous methods of magical concealment on it. Muggles don't notice anything magical apparently. So they just don't notice it. I'd wager there's some Leaky Cauldron-style stuff going on as well. You can't notice it unless you're magical.

S1lm4r1l

Nevermind whether Percy would spy on the family or not. His dad basically tells Percy that he only got a promotion because Fudge wants to know about Arthur's relationship with Dumbledore. Besides not noticing Mr Crouch was Imperiused, he'd performed his job perfectly throughout Goblet. I'd be amazed if Voldemort wasn't having Wormtail check every letter Crouch sent or received throughout that year.

S1lm4r1l

He did meet several in the Hogwarts Kitchens. They probably seem normal compared to Kreacher.

Dara Jeeling

Hi Veggie, Hi Woozle once again very short. I love both Tonks and Kreacher! Hope you enjoy this book!

Hi Veggie! I love Tonks and hope you do as well. Her abilities are interesting and while the movie showed her changing they never explained it was a rare natural ability. Hopefully they washed the cup after cleaning Moody’s eye because even the Dursleys don’t deserve that level of ick. I like how the books show many times that not only are there spells you can’t do but there are different levels you can perform them at. I wonder if Tonks can’t do high quality household spells because she’s not tidy herself? I’m not surprised by Harry’s display of temper but I am disappointed by it. And Sylvia sadly chose Gryffindor so I guess we have all four houses now.

What's up Veggie and Woozle? I hope the weather is warming for more comfortable walkies. I'm sure certain topics have been focused on a lot in this book club. With luck, I'll draw attention to some more obscure details. Ch. 3: - Harry says he doesn't recognize the voice from Petunia's howler. Curious. - The list of Order members that come to transport Harry has a few callbacks to Book 1 as well as a name (Elphias Doge) that was briefly in the movies. Do you recall when and where? - In regards to Tonks' hair, can you say "violent shade of violet" five times fast? - Tonks comes up with the "All England Best Kept Suburban Lawn Competition". She obviously understands Muggles better than most witches, but her dad is Muggle-born so maybe that's why. Ch. 4: - In the last book club you pondered whether "git" had been used in the books to this point. I'm sure you noticed that Fred calls Snape a git and Ron affirms it in this chapter. - I know everyone is going to be talking about Percy, so I'll just say this. It goes to show that no matter how much love there is in a household, misunderstandings and hurt feelings can cause rifts that last years. Since Spartany has mentioned their support of the Bears two comments below me, I will simply say "Skål Vikings".

S1lm4r1l

I don't think its that inconsistent. But then I'm not a Yorkshireman. Its not Liverpool or Birmingham. Ted Tonks definitely has a Yorkshire accent. As does a Weatherman in book 1 who is suspiciously also called Ted.

S1lm4r1l

In fairness to Harry. Dumbledore makes the same mistake last book. He assumes that Voldemort will move into the open immediately, and not trouble to conceal his return because Voldy's secret is already out. Dumbledore knows that he's back. One of Dumbledore's many strategic errors.

Snape was probably relaying Voldemort's response to the news that Harry had done illegal magic and would be attending a hearing at the ministry.

Alias93

Now that I think about it, I wonder what Voldemort thought about the dementor attack, since he knew it didn't come from him. Also, if Snape reported that Voldemort didn't have access to dementors yet, that means Dumbledore must have known that the attack probably came from someone in the ministry. I wonder if he suspected Fudge.

Hi Veggie and sweet miss Woozle! Forgive any repeats here, didn’t read all the comments before posting. Bye Bye Dursleys! Hello Order of the Phoenix! So much information in these chapters, and JK was brilliant in making sure Harry knew NOTHING so it all could be explained without being weird. I must be honest, I really don’t blame Harry for blowing up the way he did. He’s 15 years old, just saw a classmate murdered, was sent to live with his family who treat him like garbage, AND his questions aren’t being answered by anyone. Of course he feels abandoned! Of course he’s pissed off about it! I would be too. Shouting at someone who can actually hear him (and respond finally) makes sense. A few little things I really love in these chapters: Harry’s little back and forth with Lupin about the letter to the Dursleys. Priceless! Tonks is SO much better in the books. She’s actually got a personality! Also, Hedwig really seems to understand what Harry asks of her. She’s such a good girl! And so smart! Do you think all owls are that smart, or are there special wizarding breeds?
Can’t wait to hear your thought about the return of SPEW, the mounted house elf heads, and the Percy drama!!

We don’t know yet that Grimmauld Place is under the fidelius charm. Bit of a spoiler for Veggie. 😕 I love this plot point though, and I’m pretty sure it comes up soon!!

itsanursething

Love everything about this! Just one little thing…we don’t know Sirius’s mum’s name yet. Not sure if that would be considered a spoiler…

S1lm4r1l

I couldn't remember whether Walpurga's name comes up in the books or not. Its not really a spoiler, given it doesn't really mean anything.

S1lm4r1l

I think Dumbledore was focused on far more important matters. Whether Voldemort intended to bewitch or hoodwink Harry to walk into the Hall of Prophecies and grab that little glass orb. We already know that Harry is dreaming of the Corridor, which means Voldemort is thinking/dreaming about the Hall constantly. Dumbledore makes that very point in the trial. If the Dementors are under Ministry control and Harry was attacked by Dementors. It logically follows that the Dementors were ordered to attack Harry by someone at the Ministry. Of course, just because Voldemort does not control the Dementors directly, doesn't mean he doesn't control them by proxy. If Voldemort or his followers have managed to Imperius people capable of ordering Dementors around that's an uncomfortable development. Snape may have been relaying that information, that Voldemort has not yet managed that.

Diego Zenhäusern

Thanks for notifying me! I totally missed that we hadn't learned that yet.🙈 I'll revise my comment to talk about something else🙂

itsanursething

I just looked it up because I was curious. I don't think the books ever state what her names was. I guess JK drew out the family tree and it was on that image.

Marie-Louise

Yes, I feel like generally most decisions made by the order or others (esp. Dumbledore) are uninformed at best. Of course this is from a readers POV who knows whats gonna happen, but still I feel not telling each other important information, only focussing on personal protection and no real defense/attack plan (within the order), blindly following Dumbledore, trusting Mundungus with important tasks and not having control over a bunch of teenagers who apparantly can just form full secret societies etc. All a little not so thought through

Maria

Hi Veggie! I missed the past few book clubs, so I'm glad to be back. 12 Grimmauld Place is one of my favorite locations in the books. I find different wizard homes and what they say about the families that live in them so interesting. I think the Black home is especially interesting; you really feel all the (nasty) history there. What do you think of the real Mad Eye Moody? How does he compare with the fake one we met in GoF. I think Barty Crouch Jr. did a good job of impersonating him. Also, I agree that it's foolish to keep your wand in your back pocket. It seems very unsafe.

Margarita Pizza

No comment on the chapters this time, Veggie. I just want to say how much I appreciate your videos. On the madness that is the internet, your channel is an oasis of thoughtfulness, enthusiasm, and kindness. I hope you know you are putting good out into the world and that it is appreciated. As a teenager, I listened repeatedly to the Harry Potter audiobooks on cassette while doing needlework. Then my mother and I would curl up in her bed and I would read them aloud to her while she did needlework (we both have ADHD and like to keep our hands busy). I did the voices for her and everything—my McGonagall always cracked her up. Those are some of my fondest memories from childhood. Now, twenty years later, I love to relax at the end of a long day by listening to your book clubs while working on my latest sewing project. Most recently, you’ve kept me company through 72 hours of hand-sewing an 18th century corset! So thank you for taking part in a long family tradition.

Chapter 3 - not a lot of major differences. Just a whole lot of smaller things like more people coming to pick up Harry, Madeye cleaning his eye, the charm to make Harry a chameleon and their trip to Grimauld Place which is enteredmuch different. Chapter 4 - Now you know part of why Percy is our least liked Weasley. How did you enjoy meeting Mrs. Black? LOL.

Bex

Hi Veggie, first time commenting! 🇮🇪 Just wanted to say thanks for the time and effort put into these reviews, I was telling a friend and she was like "wow a 6 hour video for all the HP books is so long!" and I was like "em no, that's just 2 chapters..." 😆 For an old school HP fan like me it's just perfection and is bringing the books back to life for me (something the later movies failed to do). Also, your videos got me through my pregnancy insomnia when I was pregnant last year and now get me through the very early morning rises with my little baby boy, Charlie. Last thing to say is hi to Woozle, I find myself randomly saying "Oh Woozle!" around the house lately, it makes Charlie laugh. Anyway, just a thank you ♥️

Simon audsley

"Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more," quick point on Dudley going by his description if Dudley wasn't a bully he would be the bullied. Lot's of new characters for you to meet and were only four chapters in, including 12 grimmauld place which is a character in its own right too as well as being a pretty groan inducing play on words. Should have really used the paraphrased quote "He's an angry Harry " from elf for this one. The explosive shouting is definitely more teenage mood swings than trauma in this instance, timeline wise was going through the same thing myself then too, I also remember that summer and it was a hot one. Have to say George's comment on hearing Harrys dulcet tones is in the film it's so much more funny and on the nose in the book, and the design of the extendable ears is much more appropriate compared to the film they're supposed to be covert listening devises and having an giant ear on the end makes 'em a bit obvious. Glad Ginnys back and it's Really of nice that bill is helping Fleur out with her English also it's good to hear how well Percy's doing at the ministry......

Jake M

*spoiler* Can I make a quote request for when Umbridge appears, please? "She is a tart!" - Nellie Boswell from Bread? 😆

Garfnob

"Dobby was weirder" - was he? from Ron's prospective Dobby was the only elf he know. he met the kitchen elves once or twice, did not relay have time to get to know them.

Maddie

Hey Veggie and Woozle! So I have a theory: I think Mad-Eye was the wizard who lost a buttock. The way he snapped at Tonks when she asked about it...

Alias93

Next we'll hear he actually lost part of his nose by picking it with his wand...

Maddie

It would be hilarious if the reason for his missing body parts was because he was the one who can't be bothered by basic wand safety so now he's obsessing about it.

Luci Love

Greetings and salutations. Of all the magical abilities I think I would most like to be a Metamorphmagus. How fun would it be try on different looks every day? Would you like this power and what would you do with it? Although, I'd also dearly love to turn into a cat like McGonagall. I bet you could do both if you really wanted. I wonder if being born a Metamorph might make it easier to learn to become an Animagus. Ok, that's all for now. Thanks!

S1lm4r1l

Spoiler removal.

S1lm4r1l

McGonnagall and Dumbledore talk about Diggle in the first chapter of the first book.

STAYoung

Not sure which story I prefer: that he joined up as an auror already scarred and mangled from accidental wand ignitions, or that he returned to the ministry with a new injury after dealing with death eaters not from glorious combat but in the aftermath when he holstered his wand. Even better if the death eaters surrendered to him without a fight due to his reputation only to discover while restrained how wrong they had been.

STAYoung

Wotcha Veggie. I've finally caught up with the book club (and with writing notes for once) to write my first comment since deciding to catch up halfway through Goblet of Fire. Books 4 and onwards are just so different from their respective movies that despite reading the book pages literally to DEATH over a decade ago, I knew I was forgetting some details and was missing out on the full book club experience. - Do you think that Dumbledore, the Weasleys or anyone would have gotten Harry away from the Dursleys before the start of semester if it hadn't been for the dementor attack? - Imagine how all the new Order members must have reacted to Sirius, especially the Aurors. Imagine dark wizard catchers Tonks and Kingsley taking the risk to join Dumbledore's secret cabal against both Voldermort and The Ministry only to learn the headquarters was home to Britain's most deranged and at-large mass murderer. - So house elves have parents and offspring. Does anyone want to think about how that works? Do they date or is it just another task set for them by their masters? Looking forward to hearing your reactions to both Lupin joining the guard and everything Percy. Slight side note but I think Percy's story shows why your idea of Deep Cuts, like with SPEW, for the HBO series might not work. Percy's role in the movie seemed to leave you confused about what he was doing next to Fudge, while book readers like me felt it was just surface-level and missed soooo much of the juicy content. Still, we'll just have to wait and see and hope for the best. Hope you're taking care of yourself and that Woozle has an amazing W-word today.

Dustin Baum

Hey Veggie, I've been watching the movie reactions and book clubs on youtube since the beginning and just subbed to the Patreon a few months ago to catch up to this book. This book probably has my favorite "before Hogwarts" section and ALOT of it gets cut from the movie. When the time comes to vote for "what scene from the book did you want to see in the movie?" poll, my vote will go to "Literally everything that happens at Number 12 Grimauld Place." I grew up reading these books around the same age Harry would've been while I was reading, so I always empathized with his hormonal thoughts and outbursts, trying to put on a brave face no matter who may be laughing at you, just out of sight.

Garry (Not Jerry)

The building is physically there it's just that your brain chooses to ignore it. it's not a physical problem, it's a mental one. I'm sure if you did scientific experiments like timing how long it take you to walk from 12 to 14, or laying out a measuring tape from one side to the other you would be able to figure it out, but the problem is that you don't think to do that, because you're brain is not letting you question it. The magic is making you ignore it.

Ana

The move to Grimmauld Place. It bothered me how they did it in the movies. In the book they flew above the clouds hence avoiding muggles eyes as well. In the movies however they were literally flying next to cars etc. No explanation or mention whatsoever in the entire series about apparation. When the twins appeared out of nowhere only thing Molly said was them using magic for everything.

MP

I don't think Sirius's mom is ever named in the books, unless I'm forgetting it. I'm not sure what constitutes a spoiler.

MP

The Fidelius charm was put there recently to prevent anyone not in the Order from finding it, but I believe as long as the Blacks have had it it's been hidden from Muggle eyes.

MP

Hello from Minnesota! First time posting here, just having caught up with the book reviews. Just a couple things I was thinking about. Chapter 3: Imagining the Dursleys' reaction when they realize they've been duped. Really, a "best-kept lawn competition" during a drought? I completely understand Harry wanting to get away as soon as possible. Chapter 4: I seem to remember, in book 2, the twins giving Percy a hard time about apparating downstairs every morning for breakfast after he got his license. And speaking of Percy, it seems his ambition is taking him in a direction he shouldn't be going.

Garry (Not Jerry)

Hi, Veggie! 🐾 Ginny flinging dung bombs at the door? I'm guessing she isn't actually setting them off? Is she allowed to have them? Mrs Weasley doesn't seem to be upset by their existence, just that they seem to have been left lying around. Harry is glad to hear Lupin's voice - but it just reminds me how weird it is that Lupin never kept in touch with Harry. Every time Lupin sees Harry he acts as though they are best friends, Lupin taught him how to face off dementors, he was friends with James, kept Harry company when he couldn't go to Hogsmeade, etc. But he has literally never written to Harry ever.

S1lm4r1l

She isn't. I would consider a spoiler to be anything Veggie doesn't know that will impact his reading of future chapters. I don't think knowing the name Walpurga does that.

Grace S

Hi Veggie! Chapter 3 Notes: I adore Tonks in the books! I can't remember if it was mentioned that she's an Auror in the movies. Chapter 4 Notes: Harry is such a relatable character. He is so angsty, and for good reason. Oh Percy. Poor, poor, Percy. One can only imagine the type of childhood Sirius must have had. In fact, what do you think it would have been like for him? Hope you and Woozle have a fabulous day!

Noni

As someone who lives on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border I can say that Fry’s Tonks accent is definitely Lancashire. It’s very close to the accent some of my family in Blackburn have so that sort of area of Lancashire specifically.

Noni

Hi Veggie. After a month of catching up I can finally comment. I watched the earlier book reviews as they came out on YouTube but life got in the way and I stopped about half way through book 3. I had a brain wave about a month ago and started listening to them instead of music while I was working. They also kept me sane over the last couple of weeks while I was in bed recovering from surgery (only minor thankfully but immediately followed by a nasty cold) so thank you very much for the entertainment and distraction. This book holds a special place for me because it was the first I read “live” as it got released. I discovered the series just a few months earlier and binge read the first 4 books over a long weekend. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Percy.

Alias93

[spoilers below]

Alias93

The fidelius charm was explained in book 3 when Harry overheard the discussion about how Sirius (supposedly) betrayed his parents. Since it's not mentionned until chapter 6 that it is being used here, it might be better to keep it for the next book club, with what Veggie knows from the movies the house appearing could just be a special magical feature unrelated to the charm.

Grace S

Thank you, I wasn't sure if it was a spoiler or not.

H

Hi Veggie! It's interesting how Arthur's (understandable) paranoia of the whole situation makes him say something that he really shouldn't have said to Percy. What Percy does in return is really bad, but in a way makes sense for him as a character. It's a sad situation. I bet you didn't expect to hear about Kingsley Shacklebolt examining a microwave, or hearing about someone (Hestia Jones) laughing at a potato peeler. Since it was mentioned in another comment that Lupin never writes to Harry: I feel like that's a confidence-related issue (and maybe abandonment issues?). But yes, they really should've kept in touch, I think that would've been great for both of them! I love Lupin. He might be my favourite character in the whole series. If Ron had been a Metamorphmagus like Tonks, he could've probably done something about his massive feet.

H

[Me using the disillusionment charm put to hide spoilers.]

Q

Hi Woozle! (And Veggie) First off, Lupin's back! Yay! You've probably discussed Percy and his departure from the family already, so here's something tangential to that: "'I think we're well shot of him,' said George, with an uncharacteristically ugly look on his face." We know the twins and Percy haven't gotten along based on their opposing personalities before, but the uncharacteristic anger here is, I think, one of the biggest indicators of how serious this rift is. We've seen Fred and George angry before, but rarely if ever with this kind of vitriol. They value family and loyalty, and they do not take betrayal lightly. Speaking of family, we meet Sirius's mother! What a charmer. Book Sirius gets a much more in-depth exploration of his character and background than movie Sirius ever does, and I can't wait for you to discover more about him! And Harry's angsty rage gets a little room to vent! I agree with Fred, it's not healthy to bottle it all up!

DreamMyselfAway (Dreamy)

Heya Veggie and Woozle! I'm in the midst of freaking out about and preparing for the really big exam I got like next week, so I'm gonna keep it short and sweet: Enter talking, witty Ginny! She's my absolute favourite and I'm going to elaborate more on this in the future. For now I just have to mention that all the female characters are so much better in the books, more fleshed out and having a real personality instead of just being there. Hope you're doing well, see you on the next one! <3

MP

Ginny definitely has more character in the books. You can kind of see her taking after Fred and George.

Ashley Evers

Ooftypoof Veggie! Reading these first few chapters along with you this time, it’s really hitting me how much trauma Harry has just been through. To go through what he did at the end of the last school year, and then be essentially abandoned by everyone who actually cares about him and offered essentially no further help processing. And he also knows that the cause of his trauma is out there waiting for another opportunity to strike. Even I’ve been guilty of thinking of him as a bit of a typical moody teenager in this book in the past, but I don’t know how anyone could expect him to react any better in these circumstances. I kind of love #12 Grimmauld Place, so I’m excited to get to spend a little time there with the Order. Just in these chapters we’re already getting more details about the house and the Order members than we got in the movie, of course, and I will be interested to see if you find it all as fascinating as I do. I'm especially looking forward to more Tonks and Kreacher.

Karen

Hi veggie hope I’m not to late so difficult to make time for anything these day. I only read chapter 3 (though I have read these books three times at least). Anyways I like how in the books Lupin is part of the rescue. He’s already having more of a role compared to the movies. Also shout out to Tonks! Her and Luna easily become some of my favorite characters. The books really do an amazing job fleshing out the side characters and everyone has more of a role in the books. Who are you most excited to get to know more about?

Methanoutput

Heeey Veggie, I am so happy that you get to meet my favorite character Tonks! She just makes me feel like I can safely be relaxed and myself around her and I kind off get the feeling Harry feels the same. She is a breeze of fresh air and comedic relief after a lot of tense chapters (including the last ones from goblet). Hope you and woozle are doing super well 😊

Liz

Hey Veggie and the lovely Woozle 😍 Hope I'm not too late i completely missed the previous one. Big news for me, now I don't know if you remember when I said I work for an agency and was waiting for an offer to be permanent at my place of work well I finally got a start date which is in April so kinda perfect at the beginning of the tax year haha 😄 I have my copy of Order of the Phoenix in front of me and wow does it look well read haha I forgot the state it ended up in because I read it so much, this was the first book my mum bought for me when it came out. Yes midnight release at Tesco, I still remember waiting in line excited to get home and start reading it. I think I made it to 3am before I fell asleep and woke up with it on my chest or in bed next to me thankfully I hadn't lost my page 😂 So for chapters 3 and 4, this is where we truly meet Sassy Harry my favourite part of his personality. He's also Moody/Snappy Harry a lot in this book which a lot of fans get annoyed about but I think it's warranted he's a 15 year old boy with hormones raging around his body and has bad PTSD who also saw his parents murderer come back to full strength I think I'd be a little snappy too if I was him. Some really funny lines in these chapters tho. I knew I would love tonks the moment she said "So would you if your fool of a mother had called you Nymphadora" I just love that line 😂. And then Harry's replies to Lupin explaining about leaving the dursleys a letter explaining that they've taken Harry etc. So so funny. The real Moody is quite humorous as well tbf. Just one thing about the movie with these chapters ehy on earth did they think it was a good idea for grown wizards and witches to break the international code of secrecy (i think that's what it's called if anyone wants to correct me I welcome it haha). Glad he's back with Sirius and hey we get to meet his mother, charming woman isn't she? I look forward to your thoughts 😄 take care

Snowspeeders and Space Shuttles

Hi Veggie! Chapter 3 The return of Lupin! My own reaction was pretty similar to yours in the movie reaction. I do wonder what he was up to during the events of Goblet, surely he was in contact with Dumbledore and Sirius so he would have a good idea what was going on. We meet lots of interesting characters here, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Tonks, the real Mad-Eye and more. Chapter 4 We find out that Percy has abandoned his family in favour of the ministry. You may recall on the last Goblet book club, I said that Fudge may have intentionally got rid of Crouch with the Dementor. This, in my opinion, is another example of Fudge “playing the pieces” so to speak. He knows that the Weasleys are very close to Dumbledore, and I’m willing to bet he got to know a good deal about Percy during all the questioning about Crouch. Fudge is often shown as a bumbling politician, it’s mentioned that he used to bombard Dumbledore with owls asking for advice. But that was in the past. Fudge, despite what appearances suggest, is a very clever and cunning politician, in that he knows how to play his cards. This “promotion” is exactly what Arthur says it is, Fudge wants a spy in Dumbledore’s inner circle. But failing that, he also wants to create discord between Dumbledore’s supporters. By using Percy, he intends to drive a wedge into the order – potentially causing members to turn away. Obviously this sort of backfires as all the Weasleys agree that Percy is the one who is out of line and not Dumbledore. Another point I will raise about Percy, this one really wipes out the last of my sympathy for him. During his time at Hogwarts Percy was made a prefect and Head Boy, clearly showing that Dumbledore trusts in Percy’s ability to be trustworthy and responsible, but when he asks (not directly of course) for Percy to apply that to the order, he cannot be counted on. These are just my thoughts, feel free to contradict me, I may have it completely wrong. Anyway, that’s all for now. So happy we meet Tonks. Seriously, how does a Budgie learn to waterski?!

S1lm4r1l

To quote Hagrid "But that's not very interesting Hermione." They had to fly through London dodging stuff, or it wouldn't be exciting and people wouldn't know they were in London.

Gugurupurasu Daikirai

Maybe that's why he needs the clawed peg leg, a normal prosthetic doesn't account for the missing buttock

Dobby Delfstoffer

Hi Veggie! Imagine being shortlisted for the All-England Best Kept Suburban Lawn Competition while there is a massive drought going on, with lawns being described as "parched and yellowing" in the first chapter. I wonder what it looks like when people who can't see number 12, Grimmauld Place, watch people from the Order entering the house? Do they just suddenly disappear? Dutch fun fact of the month: Little Whinging is translated to "Klein Zanikem", which resembles the Dutch word "zaniken" which means something like "to whine" or "to nag". It's a very fitting name for a place full of people like the Dursleys. See you next time!

Briana

Hi Veggie! Just wanted to say I find the scene with Harry blowing up at Ron and Hermione SO hard to read, it’s my least favorite part to get to whenever I reread the series. Not that it’s poorly written - I just feel so bad for Harry, and I get secondhand embarrassment thinking about what it feels like after you’ve done something like that and made people close to you nervous. I tend to skip that whole scene, just jump to when the twins come in. But, the first time I reread the series as an adult, this is where it really started to feel like a whole fleshed out world, beyond what the movies shows you. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the new characters!

Missed the last book club barely going to make this one… I've had 2 MAJOR oral surgeries in the last 6 weeks but, I didn't want to let this pass up. It means so much to me. My first Potter premier turned out to be more special and unforgettable than I could have ever imagined. First, my brother and I had to talk our Dad into letting me take the car to go buy the book at midnight. We lived in a small town at that time and weren't worried about lines at all but, still got there around 11 because we couldn't couldn't take it anymore. We were literally 5th and 6th place. That hour was about as magical as it can get for a muggle. The giddiness and excitement radiating from us few Potter Heads was palpable and infectious. I'll never forget it. THEN, in one of the most heroic, selfless moments of my LIFE after 3 complete YEARS of waiting down to the minute to get my hands on this book…. when we got to the parking lot one of the girls in front of us had left her lights on, her battery was dead… so I just walked right on past pretending I didn't see anything. IM JUST PLAYING!! Even tho I didn't want to, I BEGRUDGINGLY did the right thing and used my car and jumper cables to get her car started and went home with a clear conscious The next morning when my dad woke up, my brother wasted no time pretending to scold and tattle in me. Fiercely saying, “LET ME TELL YOU WHAT KIND OF A DAUGHTER YOU RAISED!!!!” He told my dad what happened and accused me of being noble like Mother Theresa… which resulted in my dad giving me a high five and cooking me whatever I wanted for breakfast… I choose Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes. In my original OOTP book from that night, I have 2 separate stains on different pages from pieces of “dropped pancake”. Oops 🧐🤷 I CHERISH these stains like you wouldn't believe because 6 months later, Dec 2003, our Dad died. Of course, we had no idea at the time but, this was the very last “real time” Potter experience I would have with a living parent. I don't think it could have been any better... Jumping that car off was one of the best choices I've made in my entire life and I almost didn't do it. My point … do the right thing people. You never know how significant it might be. I know this was super long. I'll skip the next couple of book clubs. I'm sorry

I almost forgot.... HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRED AND GEORGE WEASLEY!!!!

Hairy Pothead

Hi Veggie! This is probably my favorite book. I find it fascinating that we "finally" get to experience a time when Voldemort is alive rather than just hearing stories about how it was during the first wizarding war. As always, every bit of book Ginny we get is great. I love how she's a bit like Fred and George and the line "... as Ginny made a noise like an angry cat" always makes me smile :D

Jacqueline Chaiton

This was an amazing story. I have a similar reason/memory for why Prisoner of Azkaban will always be my favourite movie. I was in grade five and we went on a class trip to see it in the theatre, my dad was one of the chaperones. He passed away six months later. I'm so happy you have this amazing memory to look back on, and like Veggie said thank you for sharing <3
