PLEASE NOTE - I had a LOT to discuss at the start of the video, so if you want to skip all that, go to around 25 minutes in (no joke.. XD)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here we are, guys! At what many of you have told me is your favourite movie in the series! And my GOODNESS, it is intense!

I just love how significant the events of the first movie were in this one! So often in movies, there is basically a 'reset' between films, but the ghosts of the first one definitely continue to affect the story!

Remind me to NEVER say 'Okay, they are now my favourite' ever again for the rest of my life...

Katniss and Peeta are SO interesting here, seeing how their characters have and haven't moved on.

And the ending... well... watch the reaction. XD

Just as a heads-up, the break takes place just after the interviews, around 1:18 into the MOVIE (around 1:44 on the reaction video)

Love you, guys!!

Great Veggie, I was hoping you’d upload this in this week 🙏🏼

Caroline

Omg! Cool! 😍 didnt expected it so fast

Olivia Taylor

There is an explanation for Snows interest in Katniss's mockingjay pin but you won't get it until you read the 1st book.

Jess S.

I’ve been waiting for this one!! So excited to see your thoughts! 😭❤️

Olivia Taylor

Something I wanna stick into your mind is that Katniss is 17 in this movie which explains alot about how her mind works and that's not even factoring in the trauma of everything she's been through

Olivia Taylor

If you think about it, their favourite colours actually say a lot. Katniss' favourite colour is green the same colour as the trees in the woods where she goes to hunt (and in the books is just a safe space for her) and Peeta's is orange which is one of the only colours they would naturally see in district 12 but he also goes into specifics with a sunset orange which is a nice little detail considering he's a painter.

Brady Renfro

Awesome Veggie! Can't wait to watch this, I love your insight to the movie and seeing things from your perspective :)

Olivia Taylor

The districts you see after 11 are from what I can make out based on what each district is responsible for is District 8 then 6 then 4 (Where the girl talks about wanting to volunteer which makes sense because 4 are considered careers) and then lastly 3.

Olivia Taylor

Little fun thing the last names of the districts 12 team spells out team Trinket (Effie) Everdeen Abernathey Mellark

Olivia Taylor

Johanna, like Katniss, was the only female victor from her district and therefore was always going to be reaped for the quarter quell.

Olivia Taylor

The holograms Katniss uses for training are based on the other tributes skills (one throws an axe like Johanna and the trident is of course used by Finnick)

Olivia Taylor

"I hope they can all swim" Well....

Ren

The game foxface was playing was NOT identifying plants, it was matching pictures as some sort of reflex game. Also the theory that she chose to take her own life has been debunked. The nightlock berries doesn't really exist in the districts (an only in the area they arent allowed to be in in district twelve) so with her stratgey of stealing resources, she saw Peeta gathering them and so assuming they were okay to eat

Olivia Taylor

The movie ended the exact same way the book did it was insane reading it for the 1st time

Olivia Taylor

Half the tributes were in on the rebellion but 1&2 were not included in that also Brutus (District 2) actually volunteered for the Quell.

Kocia

Great reaction Veggie. I still recommend reading the books, if not for the Book Club then for Peeta :)

Ren

I dont know why but my copy and any other copy i can find is 6 minutes shorter and the video seems to unsync with your reaction:( i searched online, all answer says it is 2 hours and 26 minutes but my dvd or even renting it on a streaming platform is still 2 hours and 20 minutes:/

VeggieGamer

Darn, so sorry about this Ren! Whenever I make these kinds of videos I always worry this could happen, as some versions are weirdly different lengths (may even be a frame rate issue). I did look it up and there doesn't seem to be an 'extended' version. The Youtube version available for purchase or rent says it is 2:26:14, but I wouldn't want you to have to pay extra money just to get it to sync right! :( unless yours is a country specific edit, but that would be crazy (check the description on the Youtube version and see which runtime is says. You can do this without purchasing or renting it)

Ren

It may be a regional thing I don't know and I can even find the 2 hours 26 min version to buy, only the short one (tbf when I saw it in theathers it WAS a longer movie and that version might be the one you have and they never released that one here in Norway, only at the premiere)

VeggieGamer

I really hope it isn't that... Check the version on Youtube, as for me it says 2:26:14 (in the description, no need to purchase or rent it to see this). If it says it is a shorter version, I guess it MUST be a region thing. I am so sorry if you aren't able to get one that syncs right. That is so frustrating! :(

Ren

The youtube one says 2 hours, 20 minutes and 26 seconds...my DVD is 2 hours 20 minutes and 14 seconds...so I checked the webside for the theater version in Norway and that was the same one as you, that was the only one. Im gonna give it another go tho, maybe I just synced up bad

VeggieGamer

Really sorry about this, Ren! I wish they wouldn't play around with these sorts of things, but I guess some countries would want certain things removed, etc. :( Good luck, I hope it at least eventually is able to sync up! Every 10 minutes there is a pop up, so you may be able to find a point where it finally starts playing properly!

Ren

Oh please don't apologize, it is not your fault. That's true, that will be helpful to re-sync it. Well im gonna start over now!🫶

Ren

And true, Norway is a bit of a strange country with certain stuff 😅 also wanted to add i ran into the same problem with monster inc ones with another reactor...our copies had the EXACT same running time and synced up PERFECTLY but somehow mine kept running ahead for some reason and i could not figure out how

Elizabeth D

Hey Veggie! Just some fun info: I follow a couple other reactors that do full length who are able to show the movie/show without the audience needing another copy. I am not really sure of the qualifications needed, but I’m sure your well-established Patreon channel would have no issues, as I know others who have been on the platform for a shorter time who are able to do so. Might be something to look into if you’re able! I also have had some sync issues with past movies every so often. Not a big deal, as I don’t mind. Just food for thought ◡̈

VeggieGamer

Thanks Elizabeth!! I know there are apparently some that don't require any syncing at all. I do worry about any possible ramifications (I know one reacter who basically had to stop doing movies because of it). I will look more into it, but sorry for any syncing issues you have ran into. When ever I post these, I do really worry about getting these kinds of comments (and of course, if you DO run into issues, please do comment them!!)

Delia P

Peeta and Finnick are my favourite characters. Love Johanna and Haymitch as well. Who is your favourite so far? Great reaction, your eyes went so wide when you couldn’t believe it ended. Snow waited to hurt Cinna when he was with Katniss to hurt her more and mess with her mind before the games. You were right, there was something up with Snow’s glass at the party, when he pulled it away from his mouth, it had blood in it.

VeggieGamer

I THOUGHT something happened with the glass!! It is one of those moments as a reacter where you 'half' think something happened, but you don't want to sound insane! XD As for fav character so far, I'll try to remember to answer that next episode, thanks! :)

Ren

Okay i am at the 1 hour 10 minutes mark now and the pop ups does really help re-sync and figured out how much it "un-sync) as well so a few times i pause for 10-15 seconds and it is back on track 🫶

Huldra Draco

Depending on which country you live in, sadly movie copies play at a different speed. It's super annoying, also happens with tv series. Every now and then, you just have to readjust your copy when specific scenes happen that you know what is.

Ren

I had a feeling it had something to do with the speed (but like it is so tiny difference you don't feel like it is going faster/slower until it had unsynced)

Elizabeth D

Ahhh makes sense. Best to be safe than copyrighted! 😅 I wonder if having it shown but blurred would work? Then we could see generally where the sync is throughout. Idk how exactly these things work 😆

Benjamin Hütz

Yet again i see this post right before i want to go to sleep... its a talent :D

Ren

I know Badd medicine does the blurred thing so it might work for Veggie too

Katik

I love that you're doing these Veggie! The books are great and very well worth a read, but I must say the movies are a masterclass in how books should be adapted, and it's one of the reasons I love them! They obviously had to leave out some characters and premises from the books, but each of the character's personality and motivation are maintained; and each plot and premise keeps its integrity and the logic closely follow the books! All without compromising on the quality of the film or making the movie plot too cumbersome. I really wish all other adaptations of my favourite books, especially Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were done the same way! (Justice for Faramir! :) )

PumpkinSparks

I was wondering about that. I have to stop every couple of minutes for like a second or two to be synched. And it confused the hell out of me, cause there didn't seem to be extra scenes or anything. So what does that mean? Do we Germans have less patience and watch stuff quicker?

VeggieGamer

Hi guys. Sorry, this is looking like a complete mess! I really didn't want this to happen so I am really sorry for the issues you are running into. Do those other channels include audio in theirs videos? It will greatly increase exporting time as well as uploading. I just want people to be able to enjoy these, but it seems the current set up isn't working

Diego Zenhäusern

Effie's behaviour in this movie gets me every time! It is just at the same time really heartwarming but really sad to see that "all" it took for her to realize how fucked up the games were was to actually get to know the tributes as real people and not just as the characters they play for the cameras😭 Also: I never thought about it before, but imagine how awkward it would have been if Gloss and Cashmere would have been the last two surviving tributes...you know with them being brother and sister and all🙈😅

Ren

Hey now this is NOT a mess...all i had to do was press pause for a few seconds here and there and that is all. And the pop ups are brilliant. The other channels (like Badd medicine) keeps like the first 5-10 seconds with audio and clear picture. After that you can maybe hear a VERY faint sound and the rest of the movie is blurred but you can like still see the scenes and if it is synced. (Amd btw i did still enjoy this reaction, dont be so hard on yourself for something that is out of your control 🫶)

PumpkinSparks

I don't know if that is actually true, but I've read that the movie initially was supposed to end on the scene where Katniss is lifted out of the arena. Which would have been incredibly powerful and frustrating and agonizing at the same time. But apparently they shot the last movies back to back and Jennifer Lawrences choice, when hearing about District 12th destruction, of looking at the camera in hate and grief and defiance was so powerful that they decided to have that as the last scene of this movie. Also, and let me premise this by saying that this movie is a phenomenal adaptation and should be used as a blueprint on how to adapt complex books, I won't forgive them that they left out the physical damage the tributes endured. Yes, they give time to show the PTSD (which is insanely important!), but Katniss lost part of her hearing and Peeta lost a freaking leg! That dude is an amputee! There is a reason why he is so clumsy in the second games: HE HAS A PROSTHETIC LEG!!! That is so important for his character and I wish they hadn't erased that in the movies......

VeggieGamer

All I can say is.. they MUST have had that conversation, long before they realised they had to be in a game again! That is my take on it, but definitely doesn't make it earier!

Giorgia M

Okay all I’ll say about this movie is it is absolutely amazing, it’s like a mystery, thriller, action, romance all in one. It’s paced beautifully. I love Katniss and Peeta together. You can see how much she cares for him when she thinks he’s dead, then he comforts her. It’s so intimate and tender. I think they are endlessly interesting as a pairing and Peeta is shown to be much more charismatic and smart in the books than shown in the films. He’d make a great politician (complimentary) but likely a position he wouldn’t want. I love Finnick and Joanna!!! Anyway. I have notes from the previous film that I never commented and don’t know what to do with now. So I’m just gonna post them lol. * Susanne Collins was inspired when she was flicking through the television channels and reality tv and competition shows were on one channel and then the Iraq war on the next. She found the contrast of that coverage very dystopian. * I love this movie because it really puts you in Katniss’s shoes, you really feel what she’s feeling for the most part * Even down to not knowing whether to trust Peeta or not which is a big part of the books * People really used to dislike Katniss because she’s not super “likeable” but she’s very realistic and particularly in the books she’s already traumatised and burdened with responsibility before she even enters the games so she’s pretty much only ever focused on survival * When you get to hear her thoughts, she spends a surprising amount of time thinking about Peeta, how she owes him a debt for saving her life (the bread), how that bread fed her and her starving family and when she saw Peeta again she also saw a dandelion growing through the snow which made her realise she would survive the winter by hunting and foraging like her dad had taught her. So she almost associates Peeta with that hope. * There was more in the books, they actually did have a feast in their last days * Haymitch didn’t give notes in the books, him and Katniss are just very similar and she would suss out his plans from what he sent her. * At the end of the day Cato is a product of the system, he is not the system. So he might be sick and cruel but he wasn’t born that way * His death is much more brutal in the books, he was wearing impenetrable armour that he gets at the feast with Peeta’s medicine. So the dogs were eating him for hours and eventually Katniss was able to put him out of his misery. * Peeta’s injuries were very extensive and he lost his leg. The medicine only helps a bit but they are basically against the clock, hoping that Cato will die (he’s out of Katniss’s range at first) before Peeta bleeds out on the Cornucopia * It’s interesting because poorer districts are actually better at suffering horrible conditions rather than their privileged counterparts once the careers food supply is destroyed, that is the poorer tributes best hope at winning from the history of the games. But district 12 barely ever win because they are at a disadvantage, Haymitch is the only living winner and must have watched every pair of tributes die, since he won as a teenager. Explaining his alcoholism and his lack of motivation to try help them at first. *Haymitch won his games in an unconventional way. The capitol killed everyone Haymitch loved for showing them up and not playing the game the way they wanted. So he really means his warning to Katniss at the end. Also, the audiobooks by Tatiana Maslany (from Orphan Black) are some of the best I’ve ever listened to!! Amazing!! She captures the characters perfectly and feels like an extension of the films.

Giorgia M

I already made a long comment that I thought was my last but I HAVE to explain the mockingjay symbol relevance. There’s so much symbolism and thematic importance throughout these films/books. Maybe the most important is the mockingjay. During the first uprising, the capitol used jabberjays, birds with amazing mimicking capabilities, to record and repeat rebel conversations in the districts back to the capitol. The rebels figured this out and fed them nonsense information, so the capitol released the jabberjays into the wild as they were now useless, presuming they would die out without the ability to breed. However, they were able and bred with regular mockingbirds to make a new bird, mockingjays. Their existence is a reminder of the capitol’s failure and that they cannot control everything, life finds a way. As they say. The bird’s very existence is an act of rebellion. They are also a metaphor for Katniss herself, as they gave Katniss her power but she has evolved into something they can no longer control. And she is also a symbol of rebellion and hope. As for the hand salute, Katniss quote and it’s never explained beyond this, “It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.” Also, the baby reveal was Peeta’s idea I think he whipped that up on the spot!!! Last, half the tributes were in on it!! So presumably not the careers, because they are most loyal to the Capitol.

Wayne Joy

Haymitch always lived in the Victors Village in District 12, at the beginning of the series he was the only living victor from district 12. The actor who played Bolts among other films was in several James Bond movies as a CIA agent.

Elizabeth D

Agreed, it’s not bad at all, we just need to check in every so often to make sure it’s synced 😊

Garry (Not Jerry)

You do get the Cinna actually IS Lenny Kravitz, right?

VeggieGamer

In story line?? Wow, that is crazy!! Dude has barely aged!

Garry (Not Jerry)

Lenny Kravitz, the musician, plays the character of Cinna in Hunger Games

VeggieGamer

Haha, sorry man! I was only joking! XD Yeah, during the break in the first movie I look it up and realise 'the guy that looks a bit like him' is indeed him! XD

Garry (Not Jerry)

So I think it is a regional thing but blu ray and most streaming platforms run videos at 24fps but DVDs use 25fps. This means that roughly every 25 minutes they are about 1 minute out of sync The best solution is to play the video at 104% speed and it should sync up perfectly. However, YouTube can only change speed at 5% increments (and only 25% on mobile). If you download veggie’s video using a third-party software you can play it back using VLC media player, which allows you to play a video at exactly 104% speed, and this works perfectly!

Stephen Hert

I know you have a full schedule, but I hope you move the other reactions forward because the last 2 are fantastic as well.

Silja Heins

Love watching you watch these movies!! I actually read the books and saw the movies years ago, but watching you feels like watching it for the first time again! I especially like watching your movie reaction, because you pay such attention to detail. I love how long your YT video's are, you take the time you need and I love you for it! These movies have such a special place in my heart, especially this one. Its one of my favorite series ever, because i love the charachters but mostly because the story is so important. A lot of the things we see here also relate (to some extent) to real life and things people actually go through. It such an important story to tell in my opinion. Now to awnser some of your questions or to clarify certain things: Actually the careers weren't in on the whole thing. Plutarch selected a few tributes that were likely to join the rebellion. Since district 1&2 are close with the capitol, Plutarch didn't trust them enough, so they were left in the dark. Also the ships that are picking up the tributes were there aswell in the 74th games, they just didn't show it. They used to not take in the bodies and just leave them in the arena, until some kid went a bit crazy and tried eating tributes. The Capitol thought that was too cruel, so they started collecting the bodies from then on.(Really cruel fact, but it is interesting to see that the people in the capitol do not mind seeing someone come to a violent end, but this goes too far for them. The gamemakers actually took out the tribute who did this, to make sure he wasn't going to be a victor) Also another little fact, you said that the arena wasn't actually too bad for Katniss. But they first started in the water and in the districts you most of the time don't learn to swim (Expect for district 4, and maybe 1 and 2). However, because Katniss goes out of the district for hunting, and she discovered a lake a long time ago. She learned to swim there. Thats why Peeta is struggeling at the beginning, because he can't swim. People from district twelve aren't supposed to know how to swim. Snow probably hoped she would be killed by some other tribute whilst she was just standing helpless on her platform. Finnick grew up in district 4, which is the fishing district, and that makes him a very good swimmer. Katniss actually mentions in the book that the arena was most likely designed to let Finnick have a beter change at winning, since he is so popular in the Capitol. In the book every tribute eventually figured out that they actually had some sorth of jacket on which could serve as a life jacket. Thats how tributes like Wires en Johanna got to the beach. Here are some other little facts from the books, but since you are planning to read them you might not want to read this. So this is a little warning lol (these aren't big things, just little details that i loved from the books, they aren't like major book spoilers). I loved how you appreciated that dealing with trauma is an important story to tell. That's one thing that I appreciate about the hunger games. Everything that Katniss and other characters go through is so intense and it makes sence that you would get PTSD or something similar from all this. In the books Peeta deals with his trauma by painting, which I think is a nice detail and gives so much more depth to his character. Katniss watches him process his trauma by painting scenes from the first Hunger Games. Another thing they don't tell you in the movie is that Haymitch has already won a Quater Quell. The games he won were the fiftieth. That year there were twice as many tributes, so two boys and two girls from each district, instead of one. This also makes it so much more emotional for him that he might have to participate in a special edition again. In the books you also learn that Haymitch won the second Quarter Quell by cleverly using the arena's force field, just as Katniss does later. The book also reveals that the Capitol took revenge by killing his family and girlfriend, which explains why he has an alcohol problem. (sorry if my english is a bit bad lol, it not my first language)

Elizabeth D

Finally got to sit down and watch the whole thing and WOW! I loved everything about your reaction! Your admiration for Cinna’s mockingjay dress was perfection, it’s one of my favorite moments of the series! You have such a huge heart and showing your emotions at all the parts that get me emotional too made this just a joy to watch. Can’t wait for the bookclub on this one day! 🤩

Charlie

Hey Veggie, I loved this reaction almost as much as i love this movie. I'm not sure if you've already been told, but a little fun fact about the book; Peeta actually was given a extremely human-like prosthetic leg after the 74th games. Hence why Katniss was so protective over him and why he was slower and more vulnerable in the new arena. Also, it gives more context to the line, "If you can quit looking at me like I'm wounded, then I can quit acting like it."

Leela FC

I love watching these so much! It's tough having to sync these movies with patreon. I need to set up the television and my computer, etc. Which, in itself is fine BUT I prefer to listen to reactions when I'm doing housework or travelling. I'm not knocking it though and honestly these film reactions are worth finding time for. It's a shame I can't watch the minute you drop them! I've only just gotten round to it!

VeggieGamer

Thanks Leela! I know the syncing thing isn't ideal. I am very wary about running into copyright issues, etc! Hopefully I can find a better system in future!
