Hi guys! Just a quick heads-up, based on some feedback, I have included the entire move heavily blurred so try and help with some struggling to sync up. This took what is usually around 5 hours to export and upload to a whopping 12 hours! XD BUT, if this helps you out, please let me know!!  The usual clear pop-ups are still there (every 10 minutes).

Hi guys! Here is part 3 of the Hunger Games series, and they ain't getting any less stressful! XD

This was EXCELLENT and absolutely flew by! I love the discussion of morality around rebellion, propaganda and war. It was such an interest take on topics that usually get gloss- (not the career)-ed over.

Heads up - I think I get a little confused with what footage is being shown where a couple of times! I think I grasp it by the end though! Sorry for any confusion!

Oh! Btw, RIGHT at the end of the reaction, I include my reaction to the post credit 'thing' (not really a scene XD). I haven't got the footage on that part, but it is pretty obvious what I am seeing! :) Hope that is ok!

Love you, guys! I hope everyone's copies are able to sync up ok! This version is exactly 2:02:51!

Let’s go! Ready to watch with you, Veggie! Just started the books yesterday!

Olivia Taylor

It's not said outright but Snow is around 82ish years old during Mockingjay

Olivia Taylor

Little heads up for when you do eventually get to the books so you're not dissapointed Effie's role was expanded in Mockingajay, mainly due to Elizabeth Banks performance, her role/lines in this movie is actually a mixture of Finnick and Katniss' prep team.

Olivia Taylor

If you're interested there is a fanfiction trilogy that someone made covering the 3 books from Peeta's Pov and is really in line with the original, it's obviously not canon but it's so well written.

SapientButterfly

Ooh excited for this, and a great day for it too as I just received my copy of the new book! It is indeed about Haymitch, so I'm really looking forward to reading it. Loving your reactions to this series Veggie its a firm favourite of mine, and I'm very much looking forward to the bookclub for these too.

Olivia Taylor

The way the movies edited Finnicks propo is my biggest and only main problem with the original movies in the books your attention is solely on him and what he's saying but in the movie the constant cutting back and forth undercut the entire thing.

Olivia Taylor

Something about Finnick that a lot of people forget/don't realise is he was 14 in his games (for reference he was the same age Prim currently is) and one of the main reasons he won as we find out in the catching fire book was because he had a sponsor gift him a trident (it actually ended up being the most expensive sponsor ever) but the only reason he was able to be gifted the trident is because the people of the Capitol found him pretty which when you read Catching fire could be seen as just pretty privilege but then you get to mockingjay and you realise the people of the Capitol know that victors can be brought which means the main reason Finnick won his games was because enough people wanted to prostitute him at FUCKING 14 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!! And we don't even know when he was 1st sold but the latest it could have began is when he was 16 because Katniss comments how he spends every year at the games since he turned 16 going from "lover" to "lover". Honestly, one of the biggest reasons I love Finnick as a character is because despite how fucking horrid his life and the way people treated him was he still managed to be one of the most caring, loving and understanding people in the entire series.

cherrycola

Yay, can't wait to watch! I adore this series.

cherrycola

Each book is broken into three "parts," with 9 chapters per part, if that helps you decide how to split them up for a book club. The books are great and definitely worth a read - the movies are faithful adaptations but obviously can't include everything. Based on your harry potter book discussions, I think you'll really enjoy all of the additional detail that's included in the books. The audiobooks read by Tatiana Maslany are great as well, I listen to them on audible.

krissy

I know you said you’ll look at a map after you finish the series, but I wanted to pop in and say that District 12 is in southern Appalachia! It’s where I’m from and The Hunger Games was the first time I read a book with a protagonist from my home. Even a dystopian version of it was relatable. So many things (more in the books of course) are directly tied to Appalachia. The songs Katniss sings are basically Appalachian ballads (we got a murder ballad in this movie). And southern Appalachia has consistently been one of, if not the, poorest regions in the U.S. I was researching for a paper years ago and someone called it the “ugly duckling” of America. I could go on and on, but I’ll save my info dumps for the book club!! This was an amazing reaction as always. Can’t wait for part 2!! (:

Oona M

There are now 5 hunger games books: the original trilogy (2008-2010), a prequel that came out in 2020 (and has a movie adaptation) and a new prequel that came out 2 days ago (march 18th)! And yes, the newest book is about Haymitch:)

Timfoil

An idea I had for the book club is that maybe you could read a different book in between Harry Potter books. So instead of going straight from Order of the Phoenix to Half Blood Prince you could read The Hobbit or The Hunger Games first then go on to HBP

Inseriousity

Seeing as you asked, I had to give up watching your Catching Fire reaction because I could not for the life of me get it to sync up. Id see something on my side and youd react to it a minute or two later no matter how much I tried to get it to work. I never said anything because I knew signing up this was a watch along channel and was happy just to follow along with the Harry Potter book club (although am thankful that your Buffy/Angel reactions include the full thing so I can enjoy that too). Should be a lot easier with the blurred version so kudos to whoever came up with that.

Ирина Устюгова

No. It would take him at least a year to read one Hunger Games book. By then, he would have forgotten many parts of Harry Potter and the emotions would be different. Plus, it's not fair to those who subscribed only for Harry Potter. And taking breaks between Hunger Games books is also a bad idea. He should finish Harry Potter and then choose the next series. Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, or something else.

VeggieGamer

Thanks for the feedback, both! I really appreciate it!

Delia P

I agree, that would take way too long to finish a series that way.

VeggieGamer

Just to put everyone at ease, I have no plans to slow down the HP series. That being said, I do really appreciate the idea Timfoil gave and I am always up for feedback like this! It's the only way I can improve! :)

Timfoil

It took about 1.5 years for Veggie to finish Goblet of Fire so at a minimum it'll be 4.5 years for Veggie to finish the Harry Potter series. At which point his LOTR reactions will be about 6.5-7 years old. Is it fair for people to wait that long for a book club? I also feel like a LOTR book club might lead to shorter videos because there may be less comments since people seem to think reading LOTR is akin to climbing Everest

VeggieGamer

I am so sorry about this, Tim. TBH, I have been apprehensive about starting a LotR Book Review, because quite a few LotR fans have warned me it may not fit that well into the Book Review format I currently have. It definitely isn't fair for me to cover HG if people are still waiting for LotR though. I will have to rethink my plans.

Oona M

Also, I appreciate the whole movie being shown blurred bc for some reason my movie version kept moving forward slightly faster (or something, I have no idea how that happens) and every once in a while I had to stop the movie for a couple of seconds to wait for yours to catch up

Oona M

Yeah, I think the scene works really well on second watch (and/or if the viewer has read the book) when you know what is going to happen with the rescue, but when someone is experiencing the story for the first time, their whole attention is going to be with gale and peeta and that really undercuts finnick's scene

Timfoil

You don't need to apologize Veggie. I'm not annoyed with you I'm annoyed at the idea that not doing a Harry Potter book club is unfair but not doing any other book club is fine. I'm not sure what the current book club format is since its been a while since I've watched one, but I'm going to guess your talking about how you rewatch the film scenes that correlate to the chapters you read. In which case, yeah LOTR and The Hobbit would be hard but I'm mostly interested in what you think about the books themselves not you pointing out the differences, and I'm sure that anyone who participates in a Hobbit or LOTR book club will be more than happy to point out the differences between the books and movies anyways. Edit: Hopefully the tone of this post wasn't antagonistic. Writing isn't my strong suit

cherrycola

Really enjoyed your reaction and commentary! I agree that the movies do a great job of showing different parts of war that we don’t often see in movies, particularly the propaganda and PTSD. This movie focuses on the political and strategic side of war, which is really interesting to watch. And when something horrible happens, we see the effects it has on Katniss’s mental health - I appreciate that this doesn’t get glossed over. I really like that the story is about her experiences and growth as a character. She’s an unwilling hero, she doesn’t want to be the nation’s savior, and in many ways she’s not. Her main role isn’t fighting, it’s being a mascot. And it’s ultimately her heart and anger that makes her so good as the face of the revolution. Really looking forward to your review of Mockingjay part 2! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the finale and the overall series.

Delia P

Great reaction, will look forward to the HG book club, whenever it comes.

BeckyB00b

I know you don't like the idea of charging more for Patreon, but maybe you could add a higher tier for people who want to contribute to the book club. They're a lot of work, and they end up being long due to so many people leaving really long comments. For $1 a month, people could still watch and access your other content, but to have a comment read out and reacted to would only be for patrons of a higher tier. Some people may complain, but I think more people would be happy that you're able to produce more content. Anyway, I'm about to watch this reaction, and I'm excited!

Caroline

Omg can't wait to see your reaction, I'll be saving it for the weekend. I'm glad you like Effie's character. She's very ambiguous and that's what makes her so interesting. I think I personally love her mostly because of her black humor. (In the books more than in the movies) But also because of her character traits and the message behind them. Her way of always taking care of her appearance and staying true to her principles is a central message of the whole trilogy. For her, fashion is not only a form of self-expression and individuality, but also a kind of perfect-looking protective cover to appear strong to the outside world. I have never found it negative in this context that feelings may not be openly expressed but hidden. In this world with all its intrigues and prohibitions, it makes perfect sense and is sometimes helpful. And Effie later opens up to certain people she trusts. Even when „fighting“ a war and loosing her home, she generally refuses to give in to grief and despair and always tries to make the best of the situation to maintain her self-confidence. (and most important that of the other characters around her!) Its an underlying message that you can always try to be a perfect version of yourself, no matter what. And that when you give yourself up you cannot be a help for others.

Brady Renfro

Yay! Really excited about this reaction! Yes, A new prequel book to the original trilogy just dropped called "Sunrise on the Reaping", it follows the 50th hunger games which was Haymitch's game.

Ashley

Would you ever do a rewatch of Game of Thrones? I know I would definitely watch you do that

PumpkinSparks

I have the same issue. Apparently different countries have slightly different speeds how they show movies? I like to joke that we germans lack the patience and just want to get to the point, so we speed through the movie 😜 but yeah, every couple of minutes I have to stop for a second or two to resynch...

PumpkinSparks

When I first learned that they are gonna split the last book into 2 movies I was so disappointed. It felt increadibly cash grabey - and it is! They ABSOLUTELY could have made it one movie. If Peter Jackson can manage to make excellent movie adaptions of Lord of the Rings with one movie per book (sure, long movies, but still just one), it is absolutely doable with Mockingjay! That being said, I love this movie! It's more than just a setup for the finale. It perfectly delves into the reality of war. Both sides use propaganda. Both sides play each other and their own people. There is no good vs bad - just objectively bad vs we'd like to stop that.

PumpkinSparks

Sam Claflin (Finnicks actor) made some choice acting decisions! He is so broken at the beginning. But every once in a while we see this glimmer of hope and the real Finnick appear. It's so subtle, but beautiful and heart wrenching. Cause keep in mind we have barely met the real Finnick! We met Romeo-Finnick (the act he played for the capitol) and broken Finnick. In the arena the real Finnick peaked through once or twice, but just like Katniss he knew the cameras were always rolling. So now we actually start to learn who he really is, and Sam does an amazing job navigating these three aspects of him!

VeggieGamer

Thanks Becky! I really appreciate this idea! I honestly don't like the idea of putting features behind a higher pay tier. I want everyone to be able to be able of these kinds of discussions and videos, and know some can't afford much right now. That being said, thank you so much for the kind message! :) I'll do my best ot work something out!

Margot

As always, love your reactions and blown away by how easily you pick up on some things. It is so easy to write super long paragraphs on everything in this series, but i'll try to limit myself. - Katniss and peeta are so clearly pawns in propaganda. they are used in very similar ways too, although there are still some clear differences. it is some twisted parallel between the capitol and district 13, while there are still many differences (peeta is actively tortured and katniss is being offered help for her ptsd etc.). and if you remember, being a pawn in someone else's game is exactly what peeta did not want to become (he said this to Katniss the night before the first games). - i also do not like gale talking about katniss' feelings for him while she is still mentally recovering from 2 games and is the (unwilling) face of a revolution as a 17 year old. Also, their destroyed district with thousands of corpses is not the ideal place to talk about romantic feelings. Why is gale making this situation about himself? - snow says "it is the things we love most that destroy us" when he knows that peeta has been manipulated into a killing machine to harm/kill Katniss on sight. Also, snow told Katniss in the previous movie to convince everyone of their love story. this is not only to convince the people and soothe the districts, but also to make Katniss emotionally invested, so snow can have something (peeta) to manipulate Katniss with. Changing peeta like this is not just a physical attack on Katniss, but also a mental attack. it is just a long game for snow, but you already noticed this

Garry (Not Jerry)

The image in my avatar of me singing into a microphone is from my own YouTube channel, where I sing a cappella covers of songs. I just remembered that I actually did a cover of The Hanging Tree, from this movie! (10 years ago so don't judge too harshly! 😆) Here it is: https://youtu.be/IgH21ByOZX4?si=GXMAsVnV44NS4RIO

VeggieGamer

Oh goodness, Harry! This was brilliant!! Great work!

Katik

Am I excited you'll be doing the Hunger Games book club? Yes! Am I also a bit disappointed it's not The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings next? A bit, yes :) but happy to wait patiently until their time comes and enjoy everything else in the meantime!

VeggieGamer

Thanks Katik. Tbh, I have been doing a lot of thinking about this over the last few days. I got a few comments warning me the Book Reviews may not work as well for LotR, so I have always been a little worried about commiting to it, but you are right. This does seem kinda unfair. I will try and put a video together summarizing my thoughts and asking for feedback. If I can, I think it at least fairer if we cover The Hobbit before Hunger Games.

Katik

Oh no, I didn't mean it like that! We want you to cover what works for you best Veggie, and we'll be here for it! I'm just excited for you to get to read The LOTR books at some point, cause they're awesome and so much better than the movies (in my opinion, and many will disagree). But thinking about it, maybe I agree they may not an ideal fit for this kind of book club? Or maybe they just need undivided atterntion, so not at the same time as still doing Harry Potter? In any case as I said, whatever you decide works best, we'll be here for it :) I just hope you do get to read LOTR at some point, even if it's just for yourself and not for the bookclub.

Silja Heins

Loved your reaction, this series has just a special place in my heart! Make sure you also check out the prequel, the Ballad of Songbirds and snakes after you finish the last movie, its so worth it!! Not completely sure, but the rose in Katniss her house was still alive because Snow placed it there, after the bombing to show her that he knows what she is doing and he knew that she was going back there. I am pretty sure that is also the reason why her house is one of the only ones left standing. (its been a long time since ive read the books, but I am pretty sure this is what happend). Also Plutarch Heavensbee is from the capitol, he actually comes from a very wealthy and well known family. Which makes him such a amazing charachter, because he could have had a 'very good and easy' life in the Capitol but he instead sees the system for as bad as it is, and does not choose for himself but for the people in Panem who are worse off. (He is so underrated in the fandom in my opinion) Can't wait for your reaction to the last movie!!

bemmy

Got your Patreon just for this series, I won’t lie. I love your reactions to this series, you seem to really pay attention and it’s extremely satisfying to watch from the perspective of someone who has grown up with this series and been a fan of it for almost 15 years. I think MJ Pt. 1 is my favorite film of the original 4, I think the way it delves into the nature of propaganda and shows how both sides are using Katniss - in one way or another - is extremely interesting. It also feels the most “slice of life” of the films to me, which caters to my personal enjoyment since one of my favorite parts of this series is seeing how all the characters interact and how their dynamics change and develop over the course of it. I’m excited to see your MJ Pt. 2 reaction whenever it comes out, and your TBOSAS reaction — if you’re planning on covering that film as well. If you’re able to balance the book clubs I’ll definitely tune into that as well, since the books are a billion times better than the movies in my opinion (which is saying something, since the films are pretty amazing on their own). Regardless, you’ve got a new supporter!

VeggieGamer

Thank you so much for the lovely comment, Bemmy!! I really do appreciate it! I plan on covering all Hunger Games movies in reactions when I can as well as the books! :) I have been doing some thinking about the schedule of these, so may post a video about it in the coming days! :)

Ren

Omg, thank you so so so much for doing the blurry thing! It helps so much<3

Leela FC

The version I was watching was the same length as the one you were reacting to, however the blur still helped a lot. Sometimes it takes a second for my television to respond to being played and seeing the blurry image made it clear what you were responding to!

Leela FC

Honestly, I agree with all your takes here, especially about Gale making the situation about himself.

GaseousAnomaly

I mean, is it really that cash grabby? Maybe. Idk. But honestly? I'm really glad they made two movies bc there is definitely enough material. There is no part in this or the next movie that I would want to cut shorter or cut out completely. I love that they had time in this way to show small scenes like Katniss playing with Buttercup in the Bunker or that they were able to show the extraction of the Victors with as much suspense as they did. I actually think we would have lost some really good and important scenes or some of their effect if this and the 2nd movie had all been one🤷‍♀️

GaseousAnomaly

Love your reaction! Your ability to really see characters and situations from more than one angle is lovely. I also really appreciate the time you take to try and respond to any requests! But don't stretch yourself thin:) Speaking of, the blurred movie on the side did help me quite a bit too. Btw, love your Gale-meme😂👌

PumpkinSparks

I just had an idea for a possible book Club solution. I agree that, while they are brillant and I'm sure you'd love them, tLotR is a HEFTY trilogy, the style of writing is quite different from what we're used to, it has a very slow start.... it is a difficult pick for book club. Hunger Games is perfect though! The books are shorter, but jam packed with information. You also have to read in between the lines quite a bit to really understand what's going on - Katniss is a teenager from the poorest district, she self admittedly does not understand the politics and motives of others, and has her own worries and agenda! These books are ripe for diskussions!!! Long Intro, here's my pitch: how about you do you're reaction first. Share your thoughts and feelings and musings. And we then do our comments on that Video and you go through them like 2 weeks later or something like that? For Youtube I would still stitch it together into one Video, I don't think it would do well there seperately. That way you don't have such a big workload all at once. And our comments can be tailored more towards what you already picked up. It might reduce the overlap with what you said on your own, we can point you towards things you might have missed, if you have a question on something we might explain it (or tell you to hold your horses, it will be explained later), if we understood something differently we could start a diskussion of "huh interesting, I've read that differently"....... I could imagine it would benefit you if you really want to do both serieses at once. And it would be a little bit more book cluby, rather than us throwing all our thoughts in your face - which, don't get me wrong, I enjoy immensly as well.

Grace S

Hi Veggie! If you want to see a really good Phillip Seymour-Hoffman movie I would recommend Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. It's a very serious movie but I really enjoyed it.

Garry (Not Jerry)

I forgot to say, I think you missed the point with the rose. It wasn't an artificial flower. it was still fresh because he left it there recently! It means that he was there recently!

Alexandra

I remember watching this movie for the first time and just being so overwhelmingly emotional at the dam scene when they started singing. I think one of the best things about this series is that it very much highlights the truths about war from both sides - neither side is 100% in the right, nor do they always make the best choices because the best choices aren't always moral. Just seeing how many people, just normal people, sacrifice themselves for this cause and they'll likely never be remembered really hit me during this movie the first time and it's never really left me. Unrelated note, but I think they did a good job adding the little details of Katniss being claustrophobic, specifically being underground. It was illustrated in the first movie that her father died in a mine collapse and she's absolutely terrified of dying in a similar sense. It's hard to really show that without having a weird conversation where she blatantly says it so her looking at the bunker ceiling and seeing the cracks and then asking Prim to distract her, and even her mother holding them both as close as possible. It's just a good detail that I've always really appreciated.

Ashley

I thought Gale was toast! Lol

Krista Smith

Idk what parts you think should have been cut from either movie to make them into one but persoannly I can't think of any moment we could have skipped. Well other than the ones with katniss and gale kissing like uuugh. If anything I would have wanted more in both movies. But that's just my opinion. Also my opinion - Catching Fire and Mockingjay 1 were the best of the series.
