Here we are, guys! The end of the Mockingjay arc, and I could never have guessed it would go this way.

I absolutely loved this one. It was intense, powerful and downright emotionally draining.

Be sure to let me know who your favourite character from which movie is (it can be the same character for all of them if so wish! XD )!

Thank you all so much for the support of this series, guys! It has been incredible!! My notes run til 18:40, when I start talking about syncing issues some may be happening and a potential fix!! Runtime of my version is exactly 2:16:57!

The book goes more into why Katniss cuts ties with Gale, it's essentially that because the delayed explosion trap was his idea Gale to Katniss will always be associated with Prim's death. Even though she knows that he did not directly cause her death, its the sort of thing that is too much to overlook. He is responsible for creating the very thing that ultimately killed Prim who was the person Katniss was trying to protect when these hells started for her. You are right that there is no happy ending, only some measure of solace that takes many many years to find.

amy

I love Finnick and Prim sm. Such a good movie series <3

Its been amazing watching these movies with you. I have said it before but these movies are so special to me and you really made me feel like I was watching them for the first time again. Thank you so much, it has been a absolute blast!! (By the way I'm pretty sure Brutus died in the games, Peeta killed him at the end before they were taken to the capitol)

Margot

I am soo happy that you enjoyed the series! when Coin and Plutarch are discussing what to do with Katniss when she secretly went to the capitol, Coin says "make sure they know that whatever game she's playing, she's playing for us". Plutarch gave some kind of look and I just know that sentence reminded him so much of Snow during the second movie. Plutarch suggested to Snow to alternate shows on tv between Katniss' wedding planning and floggings, to let the rebels know Katniss was a pawn of the capitol. I just love that parallel so much, it is so well done! Also, i love your sass every time Gale said something! He totally deserves all the hate he gets!

Can I just point out that Prim was a teenager in training to become a doctor. There was no sensible reason for her to be on the front line! On a base close to the fighting? Maybe. But at the absolute thick of it? Without having finished her training and having received some military basics? Absolutely not! She was sent there for a reason! Everyone who spent just the tieniest attention knew that Katniss loves her sister and will do anything for her survival (she freaking volunteered for the games to save her!) And while there were some who loved Katniss, and some who admired her, and some who feared her - everyone loved Prim. As Joanna pointed out in the second book/movie: Prim is the capitols darling. Killing her in that atrotious act a) makes her a martyr - it makes the supposed capitol bombing of the children and later medics even worse.. and b) absolutely brakes Katniss. Coin knew that!

So I haven't actually started the reaction yet BUT I wanted to just quickly let you know before I forgot - Panem is actually quite large as it's North America (I think mostly the US but Canada and Mexico as well if I'm not misremembering) which is why there are different time zones District 12 is the Appalachians (Kentuck, West Virginia, Ohio) and is the eastern most district. District 13 is north of it in New York, Ontario, and Quebec.

Thanks for another great reaction, Veggie! I know you're really looking forward to starting the book review for this series, and I'm also looking forward to it! But, it might be a bit much for you to both that and HP at the same time, book reviews are very time demanding. May I suggest that you wait with the HG book review until you're finished with HP, or at least until you're done with the current book? That way you also get a good long break in between, giving you time to forget a lot of the details from the movies, making experiencing the audio books more exciting as well because all the details aren't fresh in your head anymore. Some of the best moments in your HP book reviews come from you not remembering details and plots from the movies, and listening to your speculations, theories and emotions is so fun! Fans that love this series will still love the series when you start your book review, even if it means waiting a few months :-)

My favorite character ever will be Effie. I loved her when reading the books as a little girl. She always seemed so cool. And I think I adapted her black humor. She's very ambiguous, that's what makes her so interesting. Her way of always taking care of her appearance and staying true to her principles is a central message of her character. For her, fashion is not only a form of self-expression and individuality, but also a kind of perfect-looking protective cover to appear strong to the outside world. I have never found it negative in this context that feelings may not be openly expressed but hidden. In this world with all its intrigues and prohibitions, it makes perfect sense and is sometimes helpful. And Effie later opens up to certain people she trusts. Even when „fighting“ a war and loosing her home, she generally refuses to give in to grief and despair and always tries to make the best of the situation to maintain her self-confidence. (and most important that of the other characters around her!) Its an underlying message that you can always try to be a perfect version of yourself, no matter what. And that when you give yourself up you cannot be a help for others.

Just starting this, but popping in to comment on the size of Panem. So I'm also a youtuber and a cultural geographer, and the cultural geography of the Hunger Games is my exact niche! I’m actually working on a series of deep dives for each individual district and the Capitol. The layout of the districts was incredibly well crafted and well researched by Suzanne Collins, as Panem is specifically representing a post-United States North America. There are a lot of cultural and socio-political implications with the placement of each district, as well as their exports/industry. There’s a lot of echoes of present-day America in Panem, and unfortunately a lot of that nuance is lost if you don’t have the cultural context for it, which is part of the reason I’m doing my series in the first place. So as for how big it is, it’s geographically larger than the continental US today, because Panem encompasses parts of Mexico and Canada as well. Population-wise, it’s significantly smaller, from a combination of war casualties, famine, implied nuclear fallout, and climate disasters. Many of our Coastal cities wouldn’t have survived, for example. We don’t have an exact number confirmed anywhere, but reasonable estimates range from 4.5-40 million people, which is of course significantly less than the current US population of 340 million. I get the question all the time on my tiktok, of why the Districts look so big on the map (which also, don’t get me started on the canon map, it’s a bad map, but it’s what we have for now) but people only live in a few cities within each of them. And I find myself having to explain that…….that’s basically how it is now, too. So much of our land is federally owned an undeveloped, with people only living in a few major population centers. You can see this a lot in the West, if you look at states like Nevada or Wyoming or South Dakota. Nevada has a population of 3.3ish million, and has two major population centers (Reno and Las Vegas) while the rest of the state is basically empty minus a few rural towns. Size-wise, Nevada is 286.3k square kilometers, compared to the entire UK at 244.4k kilometers. So TLDR: Panem is BIGGGGG but sparsely populated.

- Apparently Philip Seymour Hoffman only had 7 days left of filming before he died so some of his scenes are CGI or edited into the movie - While I understand people trying to see the good in Gale, his argument of "anyone doing any job for the Capitol is supporting them and should die" is inherently flawed. He himself worked in a mine that supported the Capitol until the District was bombed. He just doesn't understand the message of the second movie - "Remember who the real enemy is." - I really see Boggs as an similar figure as Cinna, wanting the best for Katniss not in a way that's transactional but because he sees that she's done nothing to deserve the horror she's had to live through but she deserves a good life when it's done. - Notice how fast they had that "Remember the Mockingjay" symbol when they thought Katniss had died lol - There's a parallel between Finnick's death and Cato's. They were both being slowly killed by mutts in a way that was just torture. And Katniss had to kill both of them to stop them from suffering. They were also both seen as Careers even though they were from different districts. - I do find it interesting that Gale often speaks about Katniss like a prize to be won between him or Peeta - I'm glad you appreciate the realness of this series, especially the ending. While Snow lost, the "winners" still lost a lot. And I think that's the reality of war. Haymitch did say "Nobody ever wins the games, there are survivors but no winners." I just feel like that's a very important distinction. Suzanne Collins is a genius for this series, it's arguably one of the best dystopian series in a time when dystopian series were coming out constantly because it was such a good commentary on capitalism and propaganda. Sorry for such a large comment, I took notes during the reaction lol I love your reactions and I'm so glad you've seen this now. I knew during your movie reaction to the politics in Order of the Phoenix that you would appreciate this.

Okay I’ve finished it now, and I’m so glad you loved it. You kept apologizing in the first one in particular, but I LOVE how emotional you get over the characters experiencing the horrors and trauma that they do. The story is HEAVY, and I'd much rather people (and men especially!) lean into how that makes them feel than try to push it down! I truly can't wait to see your reaction to the books, because while the movies are great, there's also so much that had to be cut out and so much nuance that is lost. You're going to love them! There’s a lot of content included that you mention wanting in your reactions (off the top of my head, Katniss and Johanna’s relationship is a lot more developed, they’re actually roommates for a couple months in D13) and I’m specifically glad you have been enjoying Mockingjay(s) so much, because they're my favorite book/movies. Speaking to everything you've said about how the series acknowledges the PTSD and trauma of its characters, Mockingjay in particular gives Katniss so much space to actually go insane and have a normal human reaction to everything she's gone through, at least in the first half, as is the first moment she’s had a chance to process anything since the announcement of the quell in Catching Fire. Like, imagine going through everything she does up to that point, but also compound it with the fact that she’s simultaneously suffering from multiple traumatic brain injuries between Johanna whacking her with the wire and Peeta attacking her. And then yeah, much like the movie, the back half of the book doesn’t give you a single moment to grieve or process any of the losses, just like in a real war. Suzanne Collins comes from a military family, her grandfathers, father, and multiple uncles and cousins were combat veterans in WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and she’s intimately familiar with what it’s like for people suffering from PTSD. The series truly is about war and the toll it takes on people, physically (Peeta is an amputee, btw), emotionally, spiritually, and the literal death toll of the innocent. The OG trilogy makes this very clear on its own, but the prequels REALLY hammer home the point, with explicit discussions about the theories of man and philosophies of war. We learn that the Hunger Games and its gamemakers are actually an extension of the Capitol’s War Department, and explore how the ongoing “war” within the arena is the means by which the Capitol ensures it can always control it. Just great stuff, and it only becomes more and more relevant. The newest prequel in particular focuses hardest on propaganda and how narratives are shaped and used for control. Anyways, you’re doing great stuff man, so happy to have found you, can’t wait to see your journey into the series deepen in the future! If you’re interested, I’d love to send you the zine I wrote about Space, Place, & Identity within the Hunger Games as well as a bookmark and some stickers and other goodies. The bookmark depicts the epilogue, I quite literally made it so that as I do my own rereads I can remember the good that (finally) comes at the end lol. I love this series…..also, f*** you Suzanne, it hurts lmao

Gale has Percy Weasley syndrome. Percy kinda redeems himself, but Gale is a straight up bitch. Even more so in the books.

Just finishing the intro and my favorite character as bad as it sounds is Snow. Donald Sutherland portrayed Snow PERFECTLY from the books and just amplifies it by 100x. He never has to yell, scream, or lie to Katniss in this entire series but still can instill fear into the viewer and come across as sinister. RIP Donald Sutherland <3

Brady Renfro

Finished and you're exactly correct, there are no victors at the end of a war. Everyone has lost something, that they'll never be able to get back. I really hope you watch the prequel to these, A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes goes into how the Hunger Games became what they are and follow Snow's character arc from the beginning :)

Love this series, my favourite characters are Peeta and Finnick. I also really like Joanna, Haymitch, Pollox and Boggs. Josh Hutcherson who played Peeta, was a child actor and was in a film called Bridge to Terabithia, it's a good film, if you wanted to see another film of his, I recommend that one.

Stephen Hert

Oh, don't do that to the poor lad. The book wrecked me as a kid, and going into the movie I knew what happened, but it was still very hard to manage.

Elizabeth D

Thank you for taking us along on this journey! It’s been so awesome, I can’t wait to get into the books as well 😍

Ashley

My favorites Hunger Games: Haymitch, Rue and Cinna Catching Fire: Effie and Johanna Mockingjay part 1: Haymitch, Effie, and Plutarch Mockingjay part 2: Katniss and Snow(evil but good)

Ashley

This series of films is kind of a bite in the ass. It started out by Katniss volunteering for Prim so she doesn’t get killed but then in the end after all that happened, Prim goes out and volunteers her help and gets killed. It’s almost like the whole thing was just a long walk around to get to what was going to happen anyways.

Okay so I’ve been keeping it in but I hate Gale and always have. I found him even more annoying in the books and tbh I’ve always thought that this actor is a bit rubbish and wooden. Gale, I find him so annoying and selfish, he is young obviously (still a few years older than Katniss) but he just makes everything about him. Even before the attack on 12. I hate his relationship with Katniss, he wasn’t much interested in her romantically till she went in the games, he was dating other girls and then developed those feelings when he saw her in the games being pursued by someone else. He is always expecting too much of her and making her trauma about him and his romantic feelings. She owes him nothing romantically and can’t even see she is completely traumatised and can’t be emotionally available. He’s like those guys who guilt trip you into kissing them. Go away!! By the end, he is so blinded by hatred that he is not interested in right or wrong. Only in him being on the winning side, only him in acting his revenge. He doesn’t care about children being bombed!! He makes an international war crime bomb designed specifically to kill medics and he is just so sad and guilty when it affects someone he cares about. You are a bad guy!!! You only cared about revolution because it affected you. You don’t care about oppressing others. But that’s the issue, maybe he didn’t start out that way but power corrupts. This makes it a good story. Doing bad things for the “right” cause can still be wrong. They would’ve only been replacing one dictator with another and Gale either can’t see that or doesn’t care. Removing all of that he’s just a shit friend, if it’s not like… saving your life or something, he can barely have an emotionally mature conversation. Anyway, I’ll let it go now lol. I think this arc of the story is so well written because a lot of Katniss and Peeta’s relationship has been an act, lies or a performance. They didn’t trust each other in the first games, Peeta was lying about the alliance with careers, playing a romance for the cameras etc. Even when Katniss was falling for Peeta, while pretending to be in love with him for the cameras, but still trying to hide her true feelings from him. It’s layers of lies and denial. So it’s even harder for Peeta to discern the real truth and feelings at the core of his skewed memories. A big theme of this story is hope for the future. You get it even more in the book I think. Katniss said she would never have kids because of the society they lived in, the lack of safety/security, the constant fear and pain of the games and the trauma of living through it. But by the epilogue, Katniss feels safe enough again to have a family. That’s incredibly poignant. After all, what are kids if not hope for the future? The planting of a seed of a tree that’s shade you might never appreciate? After all the trauma and PTSD, Katniss feels safe enough in 12 with Peeta to hope for the future. For me (and for Katniss I believe), the victory is the comfort of safety and security. The beauty of a quiet life after all that bloodshed, and the hope for a peaceful future.

Giorgia M

My favourite for all of the movies is probably Katniss. I just love how smart and stubborn she is, but also how caring. However I will pick favourites. Hunger games: Katniss, Haymitch Catching fire: Peeta, Finnick/Joanna Mockingjay 1: Katniss Mockingjay 2: Peeta Idk I just love Katniss and Peeta lol, I find it hard to pick side characters with such small parts even if I do love them. Alas.

Stephen Hert

Now it's time for A Ballad of Songbird and Snakes. Sunrise on the Reaping (the new book that just got released this year) comes out next year in 2026. :)

Davith (he they)

First movie--Katniss I guess? Second movie--Prim. Third movie--Finnick. Fourth movie--Finnick & Prim?

Davith (he they)

Regarding length, I think it's negligible but fyi, mine (renting on Fandango. DVD player is broken so I can't watch my steelbook blurays right now) is three seconds shorter than Veggie 's. Three seconds is no big deal though lol
