I knew my Veggie Spidey-sense was tingling! You'll have to wait until the very end of Book 7 for an answer to the question "Where do Vanished objects go."

Garfnob

by Veggie Spidey-sense, you mean reading a calendar? :)

itsanursething

I can understand butterbeer with dinner! A grocery store chain here in the states recently did a partnership and was selling “butterbeer”. It’s a non-alcoholic butterscotch beer. It’s very sweet, but not incredibly thick like what they serve at Leavesden 😊

Ирина Устюгова

Dumbledore definitely made a joke about the chocolate frog cards. Voldemort doesn't have the power to change Dumbledore's character😎

itsanursething

The Patel sisters are twins. In the book, they’re identical, but in the movie they definitely aren’t. They’re also in different houses

VeggieGamer

Yeah sorry, Natasha! I really went on a tangent during your comment!

itsanursething

No worries! The movies don’t make it clear they’re twins 😊

Methanoutput

I think Lockhart had Portraits of himself, but dont quote me on that :D

Ирина Устюгова

I thought so too, but after checking it seems like they were photographs. "His office had been almost completely stripped. ... The photographs that had covered the walls were now crammed into boxes on the desk."

Katie

Oh you're right, they're photographs in the books. He has a portrait of himself in the movie which is painting another portrait of himself 😂

Josh Z

I think the molly thing is more about Sirus being reckless. The guy is far from the poster boy for responsibility and she also sees Harry as a 7th son so I always thought it was her protective instincts coming out.

Josh Z

Bonnie is right. How can any child attempt to act well when she is given nothing to say and it is also ridiculous that people blame herself and Dan for not having chemistry when they did not have any scenes together prior to their characters establishing a relationship. These were not adult actors they were children who were set up to fail in portraying that relationship.

Josh Z

I did watch that Ginny video you were talking about Veggie. It's a lot of ignorance quite frankly. It was not Bonnie Wright's fault that the scripts did not reflect the truth of the character. That is the job of the screenwriter and directors and they made a conscious decision to remove every possible book moment that made readers like Ginny and replaced genuine conversations with Harry with horribly awkward moments. I pray the tv show fixes these egregious mistakes.

Elizabeth D

Hey Veggie! Just wondering if you got my DM. No worries if not! See you in the next book club episode ☺️📚 looking forward to watching this one tonight 🤩

Jo Winters

It's 90% on the script and 10% on the acting, I'd say. If these scenes were played by Kirsten Dunst when she was younger, it would have been VERY different, even with a bad script, or Christina Ricci who is great at squeezing the script and charming weaker script points. Actually many of the young actors in potters are more about how they look and how likable they are and less about them being great actors. I think that may change for the series now, because I think now higher level of acting skill is more common even in kids like Dafne Keen at 14 in Dark Materials.

Josh Z

I just can't blame the actors, not when the only scene they have together prior to the sixth movie is at the very end of the second. They were never given the chance to even have a platonic moment or conversation and there was important things to choose from especially in book five. It is the job of the people who write and direct movie and tv to put the actors in the best position to succeed, especially when they are young and don't have a lot of experience.

Noni

I haven’t finished watching yet but if I wait I’ll forget what I wanted to say. For me Molly’s behaviour isn’t about antagonising Black. She reminds me of the mother in another book set before and during the First World War. The mother went from calling her teenage son a young man and expecting him to start behaving as an adult to calling him a boy and reminding him he was still young on the outbreak of war. The reason being that children do not fight and die on the front line, adults do. Molly is making sure that no-one, especially her children and Harry, forget that they are still children (even if they are legally adults) and should be kept well away from the war.

Jo Winters

If I could have a house elf, it would be Kreacher 1000000%. He is one of my favourite characters. I will never get tired of his insults, since they are great and not just basic. I didn't name any of my cats 'Kreacher' because that's how I call my husband, whose real name is Ron. Few of our cats have more normal names, like Willow or Shmendrick. The rest have ridiculous names like Bombi Hissysnack or Bicho papao.

Jo Winters

Since you mentioned the casting for the new series. I wasn't sure about John Lithgow, especially because of his age. But damn seeing him in The Rule of Jenny Penn, he has a lot of energy and is in great shape! And listening to his interviews, he loves his job and exploring his characters deeply. I think he will be great.

Ирина Устюгова

How many cats do you have? I have 13. It's always nice to meet another cat lover. I also have a dog and two pigeons😊♥️

Jo Winters

Over 20! Omg, two pigeons? I work for pigeon charity! We only ever wanted 2 cats, and we seek to adopt only one. But ended up with all those creatures haha

VeggieGamer

Hi Elizabeth! Sorry, I am slow to reply to DMs sometimes, and often I do them the day after finishing a Book Review, which naturally, is today! 😊

PumpkinSparks

Thank you for the kind words ❤️ The situation with my friend is still incredibly surreal to me and sometime I just forget that that is reality now, but I'm absolutely doing better. I don't believe throwing yourself into work is the most healthiest way of coping (because you're not coping, but delaying), but I still am glad I had that week where I could just not deal and process the information. Believe it or not, but my long ass comment was actually edited down heavily. But I did not have the brain capacity to decide which part was most dear to me to comment on. I thought I would come back later and edit it down - but I didn't... oops... I will do better in the future, I promise 😜 Also random side note: I might have clipped your back and forth of a cookie tangent as a an audio/visual aid for my family. Because they don't understand how I function (and get frustrated with me during conversations quite often) and that was a perfect example for ADHD brain. Hope you don't mind 😬

John Phillips

For your point about redemption for characters, I will say that I don't think every villain has the will to change for the better and redeem themselves. I think it is possible for Draco Malfoy, but for a character like Emperor Palpatine for example, I do not see redemption as something they could go through.

Alias93

Just a heads up Veggie, I think the book club video you made public on youtube (OP chapters 1 & 2) is the one that was missing comments, so you should probably make the bonus video public too.

VeggieGamer

Thanks Alias! I have decided to give the main video a couple of days before posting the comment update video! :) It will be out in the next week, for sure!

Simon audsley

good timing on the bookclub has given me something to listen to while I was bottling my latest homebrew and setting up another batch which took about three and a half hours. I Personally love love thy neighbour and have been watching a young African American youtuber reacting to it and he seems to find it hilarious too, he's also doing rising damp and loving that. With all the pureblood inbreeding it's no wonder the slytherin all look like trolls. The Arthur molly dynamic is more a case of that he puts his foot down when molly is being unreasonably overprotective, also remember Arthur and molly are arguing about the fact Arthur wants to warn harry about Sirius in the third book which he then did in the film version but not the book. Mudungus in the books is irish not cockney. Fudge is weak so the idea of Voldemort being back terrifying to him but the idea that dumbledore is after his job is something he feels he can fight or at lest handle, so he is convincing himself that is what is going on at least that's my take.

Grace

I know several other people have commented on Ginny so all I'll say is that I agree with you Veggie, the problem really was the writing of the character, which Steve Kloves was responsible for. Steve Kloves expressed several times that he was a huge Hermione fan and that explains why he wrote Ron and Ginny the way he did. Plus, I've seen Bonnie in "After the Dark", a movie that was made two years after Deathly Hallows part 2 came out, and Bonnie played a character that was very similar to Ginny and she did a pretty good job! Whenever I wish to have seen book Ginny on the screen, I just watch After the Dark lol

VeggieGamer

This is very interesting, Simon! Personally, I get what they were going with with Love Thy Neighbour, but think it was very poorly exercuted. I think the actor who plays Eddie is not good enough for a leading role (DEFINITELY no Lenard Rossiter. Rising Damp is excellent! A big fav of my parents, my mother being of colour). It is also extremely inconsistent IMO. One week, Eddie and Bill will be friends, but Eddie will accidentally say the wrong thing and cause a minor argument, then next week, they literally can't be in the same room as eachother. This happened so much when I was watching through the show I got whiplash. XD I would also say that only Rudolph Walker (Bill) is good in it. The acting across the board is not good IMO. God bless Barbie, but she is terrible. XD I also think that the real racial issue with the show is when it comes to the Indian characters. As Bill is an intelligent, and competent counter to Eddie's BS. The Indian friend (who's name escapes me, sorry), and his family are literally a stereotype. The joke not being that Eddie is saying the wrong thing like with Bill, but them living with 20 sleeping in a bedroom, etc. Bill plays up the stereotype Eddie sees in black people. The Indian characters are literally JUST the stereotype. I found watching it genuinely fascinating, though. As I definitely don't think it deserves the reputation of has as the 'most racist British comedy'. Like I say in the video, Melting Pot in my opinion is much worse (as well as being cripplingly unfunny IMO). That actually only ever aired a pilot though. Not sure how the rest of the episodes managed to get found! BTW, I would love to continue this discussion! I find breaking down 70s sitcoms really interesting!

Bless This House is pretty great. Who doesn't love Sid James! Whats your opinion of The Good Life, Veggie? George and Mildred? It Ain't Half Hot, Mum? Some Mothers Do Have 'Em? Death Of Stalin, Ghost Stories? Paul Whitehouse played it pretty straight in those. I'd never heard he was cast as Filch until you mentioned it, but thats a great choice. I do think Molly is controlling. She's the matriarch of her family so naturally wants whats best for them, and we see small details like her always going on about Bill's hair, being flustered with the twins, that she thinks are just squandering away their education - and I think here too with Harry. Now I think some of that is partially down to her losing contact with Percy and not being on speaking terms with him; and that she doesn't want to lose her surrogate son in Harry as well. However there is a reason for her name Molly - as in mollycoddling. She is being overly protective of Harry, and here its to his own detriment, as she knows Voldemort is after him, wants to protect him, but by keeping him in ignorance is the worst thing she can do, especially when Harry is the most capable wizard in that room. Yes I'd have Kreacher as well, and you'll see why. JK Rowling speaking about Draco not having a redemption isn't ridiculous I feel. We'll get to him more later, and I have great sympathy for him; but he doesn't need redeemed. He was still a little shit in the books, yet has his eyes opened as they go on - that's enough, we dont' need him becoming Neville.

VeggieGamer

Bless this House was a BIG surprise to me! Especially as I saw the film first, and that isn't all that great. But the show it's self is so much better! It definitely changed quite a lot, at first trying to focus on the family as a whole, but then leaning into what Sid was best known for! XD But still a real surprise to me! As for the Good Life, incredibly, I have only seen a couple of episodes! I should really watch more as the cast is great! I have a massive affection for Richard Briers! George and Mildred, I watched with my mother after we finished a Man about the House marathon, and we both agreed, it was a little too bleak. We don't really have anyone to route for, because in Man About the House, where always wanted Robin, Chrissy and Jo to win over George (who was technically the antagonist). George is still kinda as unlikeable as he was in Man About the House. That being said, it was still a good show, just slightly harder to sit through. That being said, the George and Mildred film is DEFINITELY better than the Man About the House film! It is completely crazy to me that we only recently lost Brian Murphy (especially as we lost Yootha back in 1980). And he is iconic in that role! Just not as easy to watch as Man About the House IMO! :)

VeggieGamer

Tiny detail you didn't ask for - there was a moment in Bless this House when I literally had to pause the episode because I was laughing so much, when everyone apart from the daughter is on hunger strike, and the daughter is eating breakfast. The mother says to her 'You can't leave that! That's the best bit!" Sid then starts laughing, and the wife asks why, and he answers "I'VE GONE POTTY!" XD I don't know why, but I loved that moment so much! XD ('going potty' back then meaning he has gone insane XD) (PS, sorry, I love discussing this stuff!!)

Gugurupurasu Daikirai

I agree they definitely infused some Lupin into movie Sirius. Movie Sirius is calmer and more of an adult instead of book Sirius who has a maturity level roughly the same as Harry and Ron at times. I think Sirius is actually more like Harry than James was, very impulsive and sometimes loyal to a fault The dynamic between Sirius and and Molly is messy. Even though he's sometimes more like a fun uncle or an older brother Sirius is Harry's legal guardian and Molly views him as new competition on the scene because she views herself and Arthur as Harry's adoptive parents and some of what she said to him was out of pocket

Annette Elliott

Glad I got the chance to see this. It's been a rough couple of weeks because one of my nephews suddenly died at the age of 33. I've been in a funk of grief ever since it happened. Sorry for the long comment below but I've pretty much been avoiding talking to people because they mostly want to talk about my nephew. This was a chance to talk about something other than memories of him. So..thanks. They used evanesco (evan-esko) in the COS movie when Snape vanished the cobra Draco had conjured up. Not sure that was a proper use of it though. When you get through with UK sitcoms from the 70' s you should do US ones. They're right. Fudge is so afraid to admit that Voldemort is back that he's convinced himself that Dumbledore just wants to take over the Ministry. No. Bill isnt making it up. A quip about not being removed from the chocolate frog card is still part of Dumbledore's personality. At this point there are only 2 people who can access the chamber of secrets. Harry and Voldemort. Voldy can't just walk into Hogwarts and Harry has no reason or desire to go back there so the chamber is reasonably inaccessible. I Would recommend listening to John Voth for the books but he didn't go by chapters. The videos are on the Wulfrics Gong channel on youtube if you're interested. Most of his voices are fantastic. Kreacher knows exactly what he's doing and he knows they can hear him. I actually think Sirius understands Harry better than Molly does. He understands that Harry may still be a child in age but he's had to grow up faster than most kids his age simply because of who he is and the things he's faced. He also understands Harry's frustration and wants to give him enough information to calm some of that frustration so Harry DOESN'T do something reckless. Molly simply sees him as a child to be protected. I can see Molly being a modern helicopter mom and we know that she has certain expectations for her own biological children after the row she had with the twins in the last book. Also Molly has a horrific temper when she gets going. You can definitely see where Ron gets it from because it's not from Arthur.

Anders Ekren

The Patils are twins Veggie :) And re Lupin and Sirius, they called Voldemort by name in POA, and this was one of the things that caught Harry’s ear when he first met Lupin.

Katie

I loved John Voth's readings of the books. He was a godsend during the pandemic. I would recommend the YouTube channel Bibliobibuli2 for readings of the books though. She does amazing voices and each video is a chapter, with a discussion at the end (she read the entire series to her boyfriend). https://youtube.com/@bibliobibuli283?si=42jx6BCOHdXNRyWz

Annette Elliott

Thanks for the info. Always looking for more readings.

Kristen Campbell

Hi veggie! I think you are being too literal with the making of sandwiches and pasties. I think those are just little details that were put in without and origin. It’s food and wizards drive muggle cars so it wouldn’t be odd to have them eating different things. I love your reviews and love hearing your take on things. I can’t wait for the next one.

S1lm4r1l

John Lithgow is one of the very few actors alive with the acting chops to portray the entire range of Dumbledore. He's fantastic in everything he's in.

Katie

I've finished the video now and made notes as I went. Sorry, it's a long one. I have the entire boxset of Round the Twist. It was one of my favourite kids shows growing up. Aussie 90s shows were the best. #withoutmypants I also loved The Girl From Tomorrow and Genie From Down under. I always thought Mundungus was inspired by Del Boy. I never made the Warty/Monkey Harris connection (it's been years since I watched Only Fools) but that definitely has to be a reference to the show. I've rewatched some other 90s shows recently like Johnathan Creek and I've wondered if she got some inspiration from them. I adore JKR's Cormoran Strike series as well and I'm sure she drew some inspiration from Cracker. There are some subtle hints in this book that foreshadow the death of Sirius. One of them is the knife landing on the table right next to where Sirius's hand had been and the other is when Harry first enters Grimmauld Place and the text says 'The others’ hushed voices were giving Harry an odd feeling of fore- boding; it was as though they had just entered the house of a dying person.' There's some other really cool foreshadowing later on in the book as well. Lupin is my second favourite character in the series after Dumbledore. He has such a calming but powerful presence. Fudge definitely thinks Dumbledore wants his job. But, it's far easier for him to focus on that being an issue than even entertaining the idea that Voldemort is back. From these chapters we now know that Voldemort's plan has been to lie low. I mentioned at the end of book 4 that I had a theory as to why the Triwizard cup was a two-way portkey but didn't want to spoil anything. Now we know Voldemort's plan I can say. Voldemort wants to remain hidden, gain more and more power in the background and ensure the Wizarding World remains ignorant of his return. I think his true intention was to kill Harry in the graveyard and then send him back to Hogwarts via the portkey and make it look like an accident from competing in the maze. That way the Wizarding World could mourn their saviour and lose hope while Voldemort gained power. I think the reason Molly is being so overprotective of Harry and lashing out at Sirius is because of what happened with Percy. I used to be more on Sirius's side when reading this chapter but since becoming a mother, I understand Molly's pov so much more. A parent/parental figure should not act as a best friend to the child. Children need boundaries. Sirius is not a good role model for Harry right now. Sirius has arrested development from being sent to Azkaban in his early 20s and never having a chance to mature, as well as all the trauma he has suffered. I understand Molly's need to intervene, but she certainly lacked tact. I think you're right that she didn't mean to be so harsh and insensitive towards Sirius though, she's just in a very emotional state right now. I really love the side panel artwork for chapter 5. The knife is a great representation figuratively of the argument around the table and literally when it's thrown at the table. Molly had Gilderoy Lockhart's Guide to Household Pests in book 2 to help get rid of the garden gnomes. So this is a call back to that chapter when Harry visits The Burrow for the first time. Regarding Cornish pasties and sandwiches, the Wizarding World incorporated certain Muggle inventions into their own society such as trains and buses, so why not food? Also, the Cornish Pasty was invented three centuries before the Statute of Secrecy, so the Wizarding World lived alongside Muggles at this point and I think would have kept those Muggle traditions (like Christmas) when they went into hiding. I love Red Dwarf. The first couple of series are my favourite, especially series 1. I really like that there's only a small cast and they're just talking with little action. In book 2 when Percy is giving Harry advice on what subjects to take in year three, he recommends Muggle studies: 'People say Muggle Studies is a soft option, but I personally think wizards should have a thorough understanding of the non-magical community, particularly if they’re thinking of working in close contact with them — look at my father, he has to deal with Muggle business all the time.' Therefore I think Percy has no issues with Muggles. I really like how JKR writes Draco's story arc in the books. It feels realistic that he didn't get a full redemption. I did have a dream once though that I was watching the final HP movie and Draco was fighting alongside the trio. It felt so real and I barely ever remember my dreams. I watched the video you mentioned about movie Ginny. I don't think he came across as angry. The video was more of a defence of the writers. He explained that the reason they may have decided to not include certain book Ginny scenes is because the actress wouldn't have been capable of portraying them. He made some really good points to be honest. It might be mean to say she didn't act well in the movies but that doesn't make it untrue. He showed a lot of clips of her scenes and there's no personality to any of the line deliveries. She was young at the time and I'm sure they wanted to keep her in for continuity reasons. I don't think it's anyone's fault, it's just what can happen when you have to cast someone so young. My favourite flavour of club biscuit has always been orange, but mint comes in a close second. Was never much of a fan of the raisin ones. Looking forward to the next book club. Some fantastic chapters coming up!

Sezabella

YOU'RE REFENENCING ROUND THE TWIST!? Did you guys get that over there? I thought it was one of those Australian shows no one but us knows about lol you seem like you might have been a bronson as a kid haha

Katie

Round the Twist was really popular in the UK. I loved all the Aussie shows from the 90s

Ziro the Hutt

Oh yes, I can picture Sid sitting at the table looking desperate with one hand on his face, longing for something to eat! I always thought he was hilarious in it, when he was meant to be drunk - which was a lot! Legend! I know you mentioned you have seen the Carry On films and I agree, they are very much products of their time, though can still be enjoyed with all those daft innuendos and jokes, though by the 70's they lost their charm as they became smuttier. However, as you know, it was a crass time, with many of those comedies like On The Buses, those awful Spike Milligan series, It Ain't Half Hot Mum etc; however they are still worth watching (some of them) to look into a window at the period. Yes Veggie, get onto The Good Life, the four way chemistry between the cast is fabulous, they are all top performers. The quality can vary greatly, but when its good, its very good. My brother-in-law is Italian, and they used to get George and Mildred on Italian tv! When he married my sister, he bought her the box set of the series, as if to say they were now them!! Think he has one of the shows musical themes on his ringtone still! I used to laugh at the guy next door, the tory, who was always annoyed by George! I mean you would if you had him as a neighbour! Indeed, that kind of hit me about Brian, as I knew he was still going into his 90's. And he was due to start acting in a film as well. And he was a good friend to poor Yootha, and was there for her when she died. Speaking about Man About The House, Richard O'Sullivan is only 80, and has been retired for decades. I always thought he wasn't far off Brian's age.

K

re: Remus telling Sirius to sit down… up until book 6 I genuinely thought they were meant to be a couple. Not a shipping thing, I wasn’t into fandom stuff at the time, it was just my assumption based on the way they were written and the fact that YA gay couples were often implied through subtext rather than stated outright.

Diego Zenhäusern

I haven't finished the video, but I'd absolutely LOVE for you to check out breaking bad! I think since you like the psychology behind people you'd probably really enjoy it.🙂

Jacqueline Chaiton

Book Sirius and movie Sirius are two completely different characters and it's entirely, I think, because in the movies they aged him up. He was 21 when he went to Azkaban in the books so he didn't get to mature and grow like movie Sirius would have. Things like his conversation about Harry's summer and his restlessness would have been so out of place in the movie but make so much sense here and add so much to his character.
